My mom’s house lost electricity Thursday night and it just came back on early this morning. I’m so relieved, parts of our community aren’t expected to have electricity until Tuesday.

I’m in Dior Granville this morning, and it is perfect for a heat wave. It was also perfect for my hour or so of early morning gardening, as it doesn’t interest the bees that congregate around the clump of catmint near the deck steps. The worst, or maybe I should say most effective, scent I’ve found for attracting bees was Silences. Someone left a bottle of the vintage version at a vrbo we stayed in up on Whidbey Island several years ago. Of course I had to spritz, and then had to scrub because the bees would NOT leave me alone!
Still working on the right formula for a Granville cocktail. I tried Hendricks gin with St. Germain and lime last night, and that’s not it. I’m convinced now that vodka is going to be the correct spirit, but St. Germain alone isn’t quite right for capturing the green florals in Granville. More research is needed. 🍸
That’s funny-I tried Tanqueray gin and St Germaine this week, and I loved it. I haven’t had alcohol in awhile and it didn’t agree with me but it was delicious when I started it. Honestly-one drink and I was toast.
I can only handle one drink too. Even if it’s just a beer! That’s partly why this cocktail I’ve been trying to invent is taking such a long time. 🙂

Have you considered using bitters to get the missing notes for your cocktail? 18-21 Bitters have some very interesting products. I have their Grapefruit Lavender and Tart Cherry + Saffron ones.
Yes! In fact, I discovered a company here in town that makes specialty bitters, infusions, tonics and the like, and I ordered a couple of things that may help.

I am officially on vacation. Off work til Monday the 22nd. The last 3 months have been very busy for me. Between grad school and the extra teaching gig I picked up, my regular work has been busy because my colleague retired in March leaving just me. I’m sure I’ll pay for this time off with catch up on Monday when I return, but I need it. Her replacement starts that same day.👏 I’m heading to my parents on Monday to spend 4 nights with them. Traveling by bus because public transportation is my favorite. I hate freeway driving with a passion. Looking forward to kicking back and letting someone else do the driving. Hope every one is staying cool and safe from all the storms recently!

Sotd is LPRN Parfum. The sweetness makes me happy but my skin seems to love it loads too because it gets gobbled up fast!
Woke up super early today and didn’t feel like staying home so I spent some effort putting on a full beat and headed out to a café, ordered a coffee and croissant pretended I was in Paris. Now I am back in reality doing grocery shopping.
What a lovely way to spend the morning!
Felt like a chypre today and my hand alighted on Lauder for Men, an aromatic green fragrance with a hefty glug of oakmoss at the base. Smells like the mid-eighties in the best way.
I am running towards the end of my 25-year-old (at least!) bottle of Tabu and I was getting increasingly nervous because it hardly seems to exist any more: used to be it was always available in gift sets at Christmastime but not for a few years at least, so I bit the bullet and ordered a bottle. The vintage is unknown and it’s almost certainly quite recent, so it likely won’t be as extravagant as what I have, but I’m hoping it’s still good. With any luck on Monday I’ll have enough to last me the rest of my life and then some. Worst-case scenario, I have another bathroom spray.
Oh, I adore the Lauder for Men, what a gorgeous green scent! Lauder does green quite well, Knowing and Aliage are top of mind.
I’m accustomed to seeing Tabu and a few other oldies but goodies around the holidays. But gift sets seem to have started declining around the pandemic. Have you tried Mercari? I found a few vintage goodies on their website for a reasonable sum .

Happy Saturday perfume peeps! The skies are threatening rain here today but we need it so I’m cheering it on.
In a very round about and unintended way, I’m wearing a perfume I’d never even give the time of day to because it’s a “feminine floral” which is not my style at all. On me, most in this category are so screechy as to be very unpleasant to wear, venturing into ice pick to the brain territory. I made a recent purchase of a long time love- a Lalique cabochon ring- which I splurged on in celebration after getting very good news on the health front a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, there was a sample spray of Lalique de Lalique in the box and wowza! I just love it! Definitely not a new release but it’s new to me and what’s so surprising is that it’s pushing some heretofore hidden olfactory buttons in my brain. Maybe my nose and/or brain is changing with age? I’m in the dry down phase now and it’s so SMOOOOTH! It reminds me of summer for some reason. Here’s a review from Kevin here on NST a while back.

I haven’t seen any rattlesnakes lately. I try to get out onto the trails before full sun hits them which brings them out, but so early in the morning, the dog and I do see a lot of coyotes.
Heading into a heat wave here, 90F and above until Wednesday. Ugh. I am wearing Virgin Island Water and trying to convince myself I am somewhere tropical. On the upside, three library holds showed up all at once so I can stay inside and read if I want.
That sounds like a very luxurious way to spend some time, fox bins, and you do smell fantastic. I like the Creed fragrances too.
After Fzotic Feu Secret getting so much attention during Eucalyptus week, I reached for it this morning. I initially bought it for the iris note but the more I wear it, the more I’m aware of its complexity. There is something, possibly the woody notes that smell a little synthetic to my nose but I can over look/smell that.

I’m still enjoying last night’s perfume on my clothes, Armani Privé Ambre Eccentrico. I’m enjoying a weekend of domesticity, with lots of cooking yesterday, and I think some sewing today.
My task this morning is cleaning the bathroom, which is a bit less exciting 🙂 .
After that, I’m thinking about continuing the amber theme with Guerlain’s Ambre Samar.

I started the day with Eau d’hadrian shower oil, and that’s it for scented products. Had yoga this morning-it’s Iyengar, and I admire the teachers so much. They’re older than I am and still have the use of every muscle and tendon and joint they were born with-I want more of this in my life. Plus it’s interesting-I find I’m good at things I never dreamed of. My standing poses are tricky because I was born with very flat feet so when the instruction is shift your weight to the outside of the foot I have to use props and make adjustments. But my twists and backbends are solid and that’s kind of amazing to me.
After that there was a book sale at my library and it was a good one. Lots of fiction, lots of books on photographers-I got one book on Eve Arnold, and one on Cartier-Bresson. I bought some fiction and two LM Montgomery books-one was from the 50’s. She’s such an interesting author. She wrote Rilla of Ingleside, about WWI, and then she wrote another book much later. The later book had the Anne Shirley character say she was glad her son Walter had died because the effects of trauma destroyed the lives of the people who came home. She was describing PTSD. I found that interesting. She (Montgomery) was an amazing writer.

I thought about you yesterday, Carole, because when my Dzongkha wore off, I segued into Annick Goutal Le Chat Perche which is just a simple but well-done (to my nose) French cologne, a straightforward thing with a little citrus, green, & floral. Not sure the world needed another one of these but I feel like my bottle will get a lot of use this summer.
Oh, Le Chat Perche is an awesome scent! I agree with you-was it needed? Maybe not. But I’m glad to have it too. I think it’s charming. Another scent in that same vein is the Givenchy children’s cologne P’tsenbaume. You can get it in an alcohol free version. It has penny royal and rosewood-I love it after a shower in the summer. It’s inexpensive and probably reminds me of Jean Nate. I had that cologne as a child in the 70’s. Funny. No wonder I love colognes so much. They’ve always been a part of my life. Thank you, Carole! Oh, Jean Nate…I never could wrap my nose around that one for some reason, but my perfumista friend was stoked when she found a vintage bottle in the thick frosted glass splash bottle last weekend at Pasadena City College Swap Meet.
I loved Anne of Green Gables so much as a kid! I read the whole series, and the Emily books, and everything else by L.M. Montgomery I could get my hands on. Even Kilmeny of the Orchard, which I found super sappy. The later Anne books could be pretty sad, couldn’t they? I didn’t like that she became quieter as she got older. Someone I used to be in a knitting group with named her daughter Rilla, and she was impressed that I knew where she got the name from :). I’d love to visit Prince Edward Island someday.
I’m in agreement, socks. I was given a biography of her when I was ten, and even at that age I clocked the depression. Her family forced her to marry someone she didn’t love and her life was very difficult. She had a son who was just awful and she was ashamed of him. She had health issues and they seemed to be tied to her marriage.
PEI is beautiful, and the Green Gables house is charming:)
At some point I read LM Montgomery’s diaries, and boy, she had a hard and depressing life. It was a bit of a surprise because the whole Anne series was so cheerful.

Hi Jalapeno! My plot (actually all of them) is only 4 feet by 8 feet, so it’s manageable :). I was weeding in the communal permaculture area though, which is huge, and unruly.
I’m wearing a blind buy- This Love of Mine by Recreation Beauty. I bought it based on the notes – gardenia, jasmine, sandalwood, and vanilla. I was in Southern California last month and smelled gardenia and jasmine everywhere. I missed it so much that I tried a blind buy after this new to me company popped up on an Instagram ad. So far I’m loving it! It’s simple but I think hits that sweet spot of “you smell good” versus “your perfume smells good.”

I dabbed some Chanel Chance pure parfum on my wrist. Immediately my eyes just rolled in the back of my head. I was transported back in time when I smelled it for the first time: I asked a friend of mine what was She wearing and She said it was the Chance. I thought it was very very special. Very Chanel.
Chanel is an absolute master of sheer ambery-patchouli numbers but fresh as a spring breeze. Chance may have been “for the masses” haha I’m saying this with a smile on my face because I will gladly be a part of these masses and think I belong to an elite!! Because Chanel is the absolute best.
I adore so many Chanel scents, they occupy a large spot in the collection, there’s one for any occasion.

Hi all, earlier in the day, my SOTD is vintage Aliage, from the 1980s. Green and more glorious green.
I’ve had a few health hiccups this year, MCL tear which was surgically repaired in March, and a fractured pelvis. Both are healing with time and physical therapy. Today I was able to swim 18 laps and do my PT for my knee.
Today, there is much to be thankful for, a good swim, sunshine, freshly picked apricots at the peak of sweetness, their nectar was golden sweet like honey. Scent of post swim is Jo Malone’s Nectarine Blossom and Honey.
I’m halfway thru an enjoyable read, The World at Home, it’s based in San Francisco, set around WW II, of an orphaned girl who is taken in and mentored by a master seamstress.
I like your attitude, SmokeyToes, and agree. & you smell wonderful wearing Aliage, which is a fragrance I never smell out in the wild but would like to!

One of the friends with whom I went to the Rutgers campus last Monday just had one of her hips replaced! She went to a surgical center and used a highly-recommended surgeon. I haven’t communicated with her as yet and will text her this coming Thursday. Her issue is hereditary.

Also, I realized belatedly that I could have extended last week’s CP and tried to layer the MI with another version such as the vintage extrait, but I felt like it might overpower the Millesime because it’s such a heavy hitter.
I am up too early today but as soon as the hubs rises, I will retrieve my new swappy bottle of Souffle Intense (thanks to another NST swap) from the bedroom and give it a thorough sampling. This flanker is new to me, and honestly, there are so many now that I have trouble trying them all before they get d/c, and keeping the nuances of each (especially the flankers before the millesimes) straight in my head, so am grateful for the opportunity to experience them. It’s going to be hot in Los Angeles again today so will be good to put this on early while it’s still cool.
I so appreciate all these Shalimar flankers but wish they’d share the love just a wee bit. Wouldn’t a Jicky flanker be cool? I guess the audience for that is pretty small tho.

Very hot and muggy. I am thankful for the regular rain, as our plants and lawn rarely look green this time of year. But no fun to be outside.
I am exploring a Francesca Bianchi discovery set. I already had Unspoken Musk before I got the rest and so far that might be my favorite. I did Sticky Fingers, Lost in Heaven and yesterday I did Under My Skin. I have mixed feelings with these pre-made discovery sets. On the one hand, I often end up liking scents I would not have picked, based on notes. But often I find the sets are missing the ones that interest me the most and I have to go get samples individually. All the Francesca Bianchi scents tend to be quite heavy and might be better for the fall. Today, I diverged and went with a sample of Ex Nihilo French Affair.
Experimenting in the kitchen, as usual, this weekend. Besides the usual dinners, I am finishing off making my homemade limoncello. After returning from Italy, I bought a bottle of limoncello to enjoy at home but the taste was not as I remember, the one I bought here reminds me of Lemon Pledge. I decided to try my hand at making my own limoncello and I have had lemon rinds soaking in vodka for the last 4 weeks. I am making the syrup and combining it with the lemon infused vodka today.
Do let us know how it went! I’m pretty sure I’ve had limoncello before while traveling but my taste buds were not (and are not) sophisticated.
I agree about discovery sets in general. They are never composed of exactly what I want.

After another bout of heavy rain last night, the weather cleared up but turned very cool with a high of only 68 today, feels like fall! The cool day prompted me to warm up my roses with some vanilla and a bit of spice in my SOTD, Rochas Tocade.(I think it’s the 2018 version.). A good one for today!🌹
Yesterday we went to a dulcimer and traditional music festival 🎶 we discovered by chance although it’s been in existence for 35+ years. Despite a sudden thunderstorm that had us vacating the park in the middle of everything for 15 minutes (the only cloud in Illinois was over the town we were in!) it was awesome. I had 3 workshops, 1 with my favorite Chicago folksinger and learned all about Woody Guthrie’s life, another with a favorite dulcimer musician I’ve never seen in person and learned all about the many different kinds of blues music, and another with my very favorite dulcimer musician I usually have to go to Kentucky to see. Plus 3 great stage performances. Next year we’re definitely going for both days instead of just one. I wore a tiny spritz of Coty Wild Roseberries since I was outside all day.

Music unites us, and there are many great local musicians and artists trying to do that in both small and large communities that go unnoticed in the usual daily press. All you need to do is find one, follow that one around a little bit and you will find talented others as well as smaller but very interesting venues and festivals. Really, that’s all it takes regardless of where you live. Just start with one and you’ll be surprised how many you will find!
Back in the day, one of my uncles or cousins (not sure) in the extended family used to play the hammer dulcimer in a polka band. I’ve always loved hearing the sound of that instrument.
Hello NST! It’s been awhile because of family health issues, not resolved but I’m getting some breathing room for a little while.
Sotweekend: MMR Jazz Club in honor of getting to see the last day of the Miles Davis Centennial photography exhibit at MUSICHEAD Photography Gallery, across from the legendary Guitar Center in Hollywood. Dear friends who are fellow Jazz aficionados took me for a few hours and it was a superb exhibition. Almost every white card accompanying a photograph illuminated both the photographers’ take on Davis and his approach to music through his own artistic eras. It really took me out of myself, which moving artistic expression reliably does for me. Shoutout to DeniseH who was with me when I happily purchased the FB back in March.
Also it was the one-yr anniversary of my darling aunt’s passing. I had only been on NST less than 6 mos, but the kind kind comments afterward moved me so greatly that I kept the names in of those who reached out with words of comfort on the white board behind my desk this past year.

Good morning, everyone!! My body is literally shaking, I am trembling with excitement and I just had to share this with someone!! The best place I can share it is here on NST because we are all here united in one passion: perfume.
For as long as I have been PASSIONATELY collecting Chanel, which is just under one year, I have searched high and lo’ for Chanel Chance 7.5ml extrait. I did find one bottle a month ago but it was in Canada and when I messaged the seller to “inquire about shipping” as per instructions in the description of the product, the seller wrote a message with exclamation marks all over it and one word that had been repeated at least three times: illegal. Meaning it is illegal to ship fragrances from Canada to the US. But the message almost had me jump out of my chair because I do not break the law, quite opposite. It seemed like I had even angered the seller in some way – when in reality I was just “inquiring” about shipping as per instructions.
For the time being I had been using the 1.5ml tiny sample bottles of Chance extrait that look like they belong to a Barbie house. But none the less I still wanted a “full sized” little bottle of the parfum for my collection. So hard to find!!
But today not only did I find one in the US – I also paid: less than $80 for it. What a lucky day for me!!

It’s a stressful Monday – first being woken up at night by explosions from a big attack on Kyiv, then a day of writing emails at work. Finally, I am doing some glossary cleanup work to wrap up the day – and filling excel sheets never felt so peaceful after all the email drama.
I’ve started the CP today. My approach is conventional: happiness and sunshine usually mean citruses, neroli and orange blossom.
And so, my SOTD is Guerlain AA Nerolia Vetiver Harvest.

I’m wearing my recent purchase of Cherigan Iris, Coffee. It starts off beautifully, but I’m less keen on the drydown – the perils of purchasing after just a couple of sniffs! But that’s nothing that can’t be fixed with constant reapplication 🙂 .

A beautiful cool and 🌞morning and a dip in the hot tub was my treat to start the day. Temps will only be in the 70’s all week with more storms on the way again. Today is supposed to be the best day of the week so I’m trying to take advantage of it.
A vanilla fragrance seemed appropriate for the cool weather, but one mixed with what I think of as summery florals. So I chose LMDLV Vanilla Divine Des Tropique, vanilla with a bouquet of tuberose, hyacinth, jasmine, heliotrope and gardenia. Perfect!💐
The weeds are calling me back outside now while the weather is still nice . . . HAGD!

Monday, not so funday! My schedule has been a hot mess-one on, two off, two on, one off, two on…as infinitum! Constantly feel hung over from lack of quality sleep. I have a five day stretch off coming up and hoping to make good use of it to visit a couple nearby museums and do a deep clean and declutter of the camper since I’m in an efficiency. It’s decision time: what stays and what goes. I’m gonna Marie Kondo the hell out of it! 🤣 I need to be ruthless and everything is on the chopping block. And this applies to my traveling perfume box as well, which has gotten too big for its britches. I don’t know why I get such satisfaction out of getting rid of stuff…Freud would have some thoughts on this, I’m sure.
I’m back in Lalique de Lalique again. I think part of the enchantment for me is how unusual this is to my nose which so joyously leads me into woods, incense, gourmands, and ambers. We’ll see if it’s a lasting relationship as we’re still in the honeymoon phase. There’s no telling when a break up may occur. 🙃

I also get great satisfaction when getting rid of stuff. On trash day, I rummage through the kitchen drawers and pantry to see what I can throw out in the last minute.
I had Laila’s cool weather over the weekend here along the Front Range. I was even able to completely turn off the A/C yesterday. Teflon kitty spent a lot of time on her kitty heating pad, though. As a senior, he definitely feels the coolth more than she used to.
As it is, today is probably going to be the last nice weather day for a bit. Wednesday might obscenely hot if the predictions are correct.
A few perfume suggestions for an Extreme Heat Advisory? Sure! The original Alaia EdP, Chanel Paris-Deauville, O de Lancome, and Smell Bent St. Tropez Dispenser/Dispenser Gold. I’d also wear Wrappings, but YMMV.

Paris-Deauville is in the same family as O de Lancome, IMO. Alaia is a complicated hot-weather floral for me with a noticeable mineral note. St. Tropez-Dispenser smells a lot like the first Vacation perfume.
Today is my son’s birthday. 24! I just don’t understand where the time goes. We didn’t really do anything, but he has presents and cupcakes.
