Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, early May 2026

Posted by Robin on 2 May 2026 115 Comments

We're celebrating the first weekend in May (and the birthday of Our Lady Donatella on Saturday) with our bog standard open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you think you'll wear the most this month, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Another lovely floral photo and I’m feeling ALL the spring vibes today. 💐 The weather is absolutely perfect- sunny, warm, with an intermittent gentle, cool breeze coming off the surrounding hills. Just got back from a walk about with doggo and to celebrate this gorgeous day, I’m wearing Au Dela Narcisse. The dry down is my favorite part probably due to the labdanum, benzoin, and oak moss. Yum!

In other inconsequential news I’m about to do my FIFTH load of laundry. Every. Single. Thing. Has been laundered; every blanket, sheet, dog fleece, rug, ad nauseum. Never so glad to be *almost* done. Now it’s the last little bits and some tennis shoes. Honestly, I didn’t know I had enough to do five loads…

Hope everyone is enjoying the same kind of weather I am. It won’t last, but I’m loving it while it’s here. 🌞

I can relate to your laundry! After getting back last week I did three loads, every towel and bedsheet, every scrap of clothing. It’s my least hated of all chores: there’s something immensely gratifying about getting every single thing in the entire household washed and dried and put away. It’s like a fresh start.

I would hate to know how many loads it would take me to wash every single thing. I should live in a camper van.

      Enjoy your perfect weather!!

Congratulations on winning at laundry! Hey, it’s a never ending necessity and easy to get upside down on it. It’s very satisfying to be able to check that box as done for the moment.

I love your fragrance. Au Dela Narcisse is a stunner. I think I’ll hunt it down and hope to get some of your takin’ care of business energy!

Coincidentally I have a new NST roulette game. When I’m indecisive about what to wear, I read the comments and the first comment that I have a sample or bottle, I wear that. It’s helped me revisit some perfumes that I have neglected. You and NST readers in general have excellent taste. Be well.

Glad you’re finally having some nice weather and got all caught up with the laundry. Doing laundry is the only household chore I enjoy. I usually do one load per day except for Sundays, and because I change my seasonal decor in terms of linens and have 3 cats, there’s usually enough waiting to keep that schedule.

Finally trying Shalimar Millésime Rose today…lots of fruit, almond and violet so far but Shalimar is nowhere in sight. 🧐 Quite fresh and a bit synthetic…will see how it wears and update later.

Me too. I was interested because I love a good rose, but most people seem to have the same opinion: not really Shalimar at all, and somewhat synthetic. If a house is going to put out a flanker to a decades-old classic, I’d prefer the new scent to have at least something to do with the original.

Exactly! I was interested as well until I heard there’s no Shalimar to be found. I think it could have been outstanding if it had a Shalimar adjacent base and a dark jammy rose. That’s what I was hoping for anyway, but hey, money saved!!

That’s what I get too, but I’m okay with it because I didn’t care for the original Shalimar.

You know how there are some fragrances that you’re happy to wear any time, and others that you have to be in a very specific mood to wear? YSL Nu is the second kind for me, and today for no discernible reason I was in that mood, so that’s what I’m wearing. I’m lucky to have the vintage, in that metal hockey puck, and it’s irresistibly good. Tom Ford was the creative director of YSL when Nu was launched, and you can tell that Black Orchid, his first scent under his own name, is essentially Nu reworked and complicated, as if he thought he didn’t get it right the first time, but I really think Nu is the better scent.

I don’t think I smelled Nu. Sounds intriguing. Black Orchid and Dan tes Bras are like that for me. I sometimes pull them out, sniff, and think nope. When I’m in the right headspace, I sniff my wrist all day and they’re amazing.

Maybe there’s a goodness to the hockey puck bottle shape or to that time in perfume creation. (Kidding about the bottle, but maybe not about the time frame). Bvlgari Black is amazing, one of my all time favorites…be well.

We’re having the opposite of Deva’s weather — it’s chilly and cloudy, and tomorrow we pivot to an excessive heat advisory. No happy medium to be seen. I shouldn’t complain, as our spring this year has been really lovely. Anyway, since it was cold enough to drive me into a flannel shirt, I chose Frapin 1270 for boozey warmth this morning. Great stuff.

You smell wonderful, SheriG! I almost wore that last night, but ended up in Sarah Horowitz Perfect Veil. It’s one of my cozy vanillic, light white musk, light spice, skin scents for slipping between the sheets that gives me that aaaah feeling. (The Frapin is too, actually). Have we ever done a CP on what scents people reach for at night? I definitely don’t like sampling new things at night, too jarring. I want to be enveloped in something cozy and intimately known and loved. I seem to recall March Moore of The Perfumed Court and then Surrender to Chance saying she always re-set at night with a very basic violent fragrance like Borsari (I can’t remember which it was exactly). I’m scentless so far, hunting around mentally for what I want to wear.

Thanks! I’ve never tried Perfect Veil, mainly because musk and I mostly don’t speak, but that name is great. And I’d bet the Borsari in question is Violetta di Parma. I have some of it, ordered from STC in my earliest perfumista days based on their recommendation of it as the perfect violet soliflore. AND great CP idea! I’d bet interested to know if people gravitate toward the familiar, or the famously short-lived, or their most soothing, or … the list goes on.

    Hello fragrant friends,
An unopened package of Bon Perfumer 702 Incense Lavande I bought maybe two years ago jumped out at me earlier.

Its a bit overcast and cool still, so this suits my mood and the weather.

Testing Glossier You today. Have never, ever tried any of these.
Since I hang out in the world of incense, smoke, amber, vanilla and spice, this might be one for bedtime.

A picture perfect May day here, blue skies, green grass, flowers in bloom, birds tweeting and…
it was 31F when I got up this morning. I was out until noon and it never got above 40F and windy, brrr.
I’m wearing Commes des Garcons 2, with the Japanese ink note. Love this quirky little number, it’s spicy incense in the best way.
Last time I commented, it was an update about my mom. I think it sounded like when she lost hospice, that I lost all help, which is not the case, thankfully. I still have an excellent private caregiver and an agency that I’m working with. You all were so nice with your comments, thank you.

Nice! I also picked up my trio of the latest Jo Malone set in 10 mL format. I haven’t yet opened the box but I will do so when I get home.

In other news, there’s a series in The Wall Street Journal that comes out every month or so. It’s by a pair of retired people and I like how they write even though I don’t necessarily relate to them other than retired. There may be a pay wall but if you can get through there are a good number of articles over the past years.

I’ll just try to be sympathetic on upset lady. Best possible interpretation? Maybe she just got back from living in Europe for a long time. I made a quick trip home from Germany for a weekend in the summer of 2016, to get the keys from my renters who were moving back to the UK before we were coming home. I needed toothpaste and went over to Shoppers, and had exactly the amount of the toothpaste cost out in change. (Because this is how it works in Germany! Many people pay cash! And…) He told me the total and I looked at him funny, like, what? Why are you charging me more? And then I remembered: In Germany, the sales tax is always included in the price. In North America, not.

Most charitable explanation I can think of? Otherwise…honestly!

My first job was cashier at discount store. I got so good at figuring out the sales tax in my head that when was off and buying an item for myself, I would have the exact change ready when the total was rung. The salesperson would look at me a little surprised when I handed over the money. I am not that great at math, just had a lot of practice. I was also obsessed about giving a total amount of cash payment so I would get the minimal number of small bills/coins back.

Now there is so little cash, there is not much point. But if you really want to see a cashier get perplexed, hand over a 50-cent piece. The last time I did that, the sales person has to call the manager, did not want to believe me or her eyes about what the coin was worth.

Just paying cash at all is enough to make cashiers perplexed these days in some stores…and I do sympathize, but I carry cash and prefer to use it for some items.

We’re having gorgeous, perfect weather today, low 70’s, after the miserable storms yesterday that produced a lot of local flooding. I’ve been out to buy groceries and then to to lunch. My SOTD is Zoologist Lovebird, which I’m still coming to terms with. It’s a happy, pretty, cheerful scent, but has one note in it that tickles my nose too much. And I can’t figure out what it is. So it’s not a true love, but it’s an intriguing semi-like. I don’t have anything like it.
Tomorrow I’m going to the opera! I”ll report in afterwards.

It’s a special one–Messiah, with orchestration by Mozart (he added more horns and winds, mainly), and in staging by the late Robert Wilson. It’s going to be REALLY different from the standard choral production. I’m very excited about it, plus I really love the counter-tenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen. Here’s more about it:

Oh I absolutely LOVE Robert Wilson. I remember around 2006 or so, going to see The Black Rider in L.A. over and over again. So many annual subscribers walked out (you either loved or hated it, it seems) that the ushers escorted us to the prime floor seats. I would buy the cheapest rush seats I could. Must have seen it 5 times. Music by Tom Waits (his album of the same name). Extra libretto by William Burroughs. It was the best avant-garde music theatre ever. It was developed in Germany, which gives subsidies to the arts, of course!

            Robert Wilson was wonderful!

But this also reminds me of seeing Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk in Milan. (Not a Robert Wilson thing.) We were tourists, up in the nosebleed seats, but there on purpose as we wanted to see La Scala but also love Shostakovich. When we came back from intermission, we were the only ones left in our nosebleed section. 🙂

And I agree, I love Germany for its subsidies to the arts. When we were there on sabbatical 10 years ago, we saw Lulu staged at the Nationaltheater in Munich, and Rite of Spring danced at the ballet in Munich. Also fabulous concerts at the symphony in Bamberg, which is one of the best in Germany though also in a smaller city no one outside Germany would ever think of. None of this would ever happen in North America. Our local orchestra here in the third largest city in Canada, even with Canadian government subsidies, mostly does play-alongs with Spielberg or Harry Potter movies, and our opera is always in danger of folding.

Commando today. I was on my own, and decided to go out for breakfast and then go on a hike. And then I never got around to putting anything one.

I’ve discovered that I much prefer early morning shopping. On Saturdays, usually I drop Ockeghem Teen for orchestra at 9:30ish and then go to the good grocery store on the West Side and/or the nursery. Today, I needed to go to both but didn’t get there until after 11, and both were completely overrun. I didn’t bother with the groceries and got my soil and left right away.

Ockeghem Teen got home this evening, and had many tales of otters, bears, sea urchins, starfish, cats, and geeky boys trying to hang out with the kinda geeky girls (her group) and annoying them. Ah, high school. Apparently it was her job to tell him to give it a rest, though she did appreciate his Doctor Who knowledge.

Another beautiful morning but they are predicting rain and storms this afternoon…⛈️

This morning I’m wearing Vetiver Royal Bourbon by Oriza L Legrand from a small decant I must’ve obtained in a swap at some point. I really like this one! It does lean a masculine but not overly so. We’ll see how it develops throughout the day.

Some chores to be done and then we head out only for a short drive today. Cheers!

Re: my Tauer Patch Absolue split and Shadid splits, if anyone is interested in a decant of either/both, I would be open swapping for a decant of Tauer’s L’Oudh (adjusting for the price difference, of course).

Frapin 1270, inspired by SheriG who wore it earlier this week. Whoever mentioned Normal Lewis’s book Naples ’44, I thank you. Just finished it. Reportage from the ground in 1944 in southern Italy by Lewis, who was stationed there with British Intelligence. Kind of diary entries, but filled with sad, horrifying, Kafka-esque anecdotes about the poverty, the culture, the corruption on all sides (the Italian American gangster Vito Genovese had fled the U.S. in the 1930s to avoid murder charges, was welcomed by Mussolini and served the Fascists, then finagled his way into the U.S. Army when they took Naples in 1944 and no surprise, took over the Naples rackets/black market with U.S. Army protection!!) but also the zest for life that turned Lewis into a lifelong Italo-phile. Having been to crazy vibrant Naples 60-some years later, I could relate to many things, luckily not the widespread semi-starvation. The banditry is less visible these days but one senses an entire subterranean world. We were told not to leave our rental car on the street as it would be immediately stolen or stripped.
This book has primed me perfectly for my next book: I Will Have Vengeance by Maurizio de Giovanni, a 1930s Naples police procedural noir.

Omg, your post immediately brought to mind a relative of mine by marriage who was Italian and lived in Chicago. His wife, who was my dads cousin, called one night to say he has “passed” and the story behind his death was a hodgepodge of mysterious ties between Chicago politicians and the mob…I’ve tried several times to find out the real story because as a child, I thought this man was the greatest. I wanted to trade my dad in for this man because he was so warm and friendly and actually listened to us kids. He died in the early 80’s before the internet and I have yet to even find a mention on line anywhere about this. My mom and dad were absolutely gobsmacked when “stuff” started being said about his death. His wife was also completely blindsided and his entire family was devastated. My family was very close to them throughout my childhood until we moved to Florida…so intriguing.

Wow that book sounds good, I am adding to my list.

I went to Las Vegas last year and visited the mafia museum there. There was one gangster – I cannot remember which one but might have NOT been Italian American from my recollection – who served quite well in WW2, though I think he organized one of the laundry services or something like that, I guess he had the organizational skills and just translated to a different setting.

And the son of Al Capone’s lawyer, Butch O’Hare, son of “Easy Eddie” O’Hare, was a flying ace in WW2. The father was ambushed and killed but O’Hare airport is named after the pilot son. Probably Chicago people know that but it was news to me.

I think there is still a lot of poverty in Italy and disparity in income. I appreciated being in Naples and seeing a real working city with all its downsides but I saw more Italians in their everyday lives than I did in the smaller, posher parts of the Amalfi coast. Some of the young people we met in Italy mentioned having a really difficult time affording to live there, though it occurred to me the younger generation has it difficult here in the US as well. I also saw more law enforcement – some with long guns – just patrolling the urban areas, much more than I have ever seen in the US.

My Italian great-grandfather got his wages in cheese when he was in Italy. Even coming to the US and working in a factory, he was thrilled to afford a house.

Yeah, interestingly, most of the Italian immigrants to the US were from the South, which was so poor and almost feudal between the tiny landowning gentry and the oppressed peasantry, with the Mafia filling in the gaps that the people were desperate to leave while the wealthier Northern Italians were less driven to uproot their lives and businesses.
Here is a funny perfume reference from the book Naples ’44” after the author was sent to look for evidence of espionage in the apartment of a wealthy Italian prince: “The apartment was like a silk-lined womb…a satchel on a bedside table with a porphyry top contained half a million lire…A cupbard held great flagons of Chanel perfume, and several hundred pairs of silk stockings, each pair worth the price of the honour of any woman in Naples whose honour was for sale.”
If you are interested in Las Vegas gangsters, may I recommend Tod Goldberg’s trilogy that starts with Gangsterland. Really well written and funny. Takes place starting in the late 1990s. The main character is Sal Cupertine , who had to flee Chicago for Vegas and take on a new ID and profession after a mob hit because now his life is in danger.

Spectacular weather here – sunny, cool, dry. I have not been outside much, since I have had a lot of housework and office work to do. Weird how I actually prefer the house work to the office work.

I am trying to go through some samples I have in my bathroom, where I keep the new samples I have not tried, since I need to start filing them away in my alphabetized box. Yesterday, I did Atelier Materi Santal Blond which was enjoyable but a lot like Nothing but Sea and Sky, which I already have.

Today, I did some skin scents/musks, did ELDO’s Ghost in the Shell and then Musc by Bruno Acampora. Both of these faded out so quickly I ended up adding Alyssa Ashley Musk which is the cheapest of the 3 and my latest full bottle purchase and it out-performed the others.

A very busy last couple of days filled with many good things but enough petty annoyances to make me grateful I can finally relax the rest of the day.

Yesterday I spent numerous hours working our busiest day at the library book sale – very gratifying but very physically tiring – then we drove to a far distant suburb for dinner with friends and a concert at their local historic theater. It was a very late night ending in the wee hours. The 77 Experience 🎶 is a tribute band of 6 extremely-talented musicians who perform music from groups popular that specific year. In their nearly 3-hour performance, they probably did songs from nearly 30 bands with a screen backdrop of photos of all the groups. During the intermission there were snippets of commercials and TV programs popular that year. All very well done, but since it was mostly rock music, I think I’ve had my fill of loud electric guitar music for a long, long, long time! I wore just a tiny bit of LMDLV Vanille Sauvage de Madagascar with its comforting warmth of lavender-touched vanilla, perfect for a chilly day and one spent in close proximity to others who might not appreciate anything stronger.

Today we went out for breakfast and did some gardening. Still cool, so I wore L’Occitane Miel et Citron, honey and lemon with a touch of cinnamon and some caramel, vanilla and patchouli to warm things up.

Going to relax with a movie and a 🔥 tonight. Wishing everyone a great weekend ahead!

That would be odd-your post was clear-I just didn’t think they’d audit past 7 years. I could never be an auditor. We do it for internal processes here. It’s not my favourite thing to do but it’s ok 🙂 Your work is interesting to me.

Yep, we experienced that “spring” when we were in Halifax in March. In the course of one university tour, it rained, hailed, snowed, and then was sunny. It’s a learning experience for Ockeghem Teen, I guess. 😀

Meanwhile, on the west coast, it’s 25 and sunny. A bit too warm for this time of year, I have to say.

An absolutely gorgeous day here, temps near 80, blue sky and brilliant 🌞. To have this on a Monday puts a smile on my face😀as does being able to hang my laundry outside. A great day to purchase our annual pool pass; to swim outside under the warm blue sky in cool blue water is my favorite summer activity. The timeless music our pool attendants play enhances my joy; as a dancer at heart, swimming to the rhythm of the music adds even more fun 🎶. Soon it will be that time!🏊‍♂️

SOTD is EL Sensuous edt. I love this one in Spring for the emphasis on the floral notes of ylang ylang, jasmine, magnolia and lily. I layer it over BBW’s Golden Magnolia Sun body products to emphasize the magnolia note. Yet, despite its greater emphasis on floral notes , the edt still smells like the original Sensuous, only lighter and airier.

Wishing all a great week ahead!🌸
