More than $1.5 billion in lifetime sales

Posted by Robin on 7 April 2026 6 Comments

[Japanese Cherry Blossom's] timelessness (and genuinely delightful scent) is part of what’s made it one of the top three best-selling fragrances at Bath & Body Works — and one that hasn’t been reformulated in 20 years, which is rare. “You have people who have loved it forever. It’s really one of the true icon statuses in the brand’s assortment that has withstood the test of time,” says Lewis. “And it’s able to not only appease our existing customer, but bring in new ones as well.”

According to Bath & Body Works, the Japanese Cherry Blossom pillar has generated more than $1.5 billion in lifetime sales. In 2025 alone, the company sold more than 11 million units across the Japanese Cherry Blossom franchise, which includes formats such as fine fragrance mist, eau de parfum, body lotion and more. 2023 represented a peak in Japanese Cherry Blossom’s popularity as a home fragrance, with formats such as candles, where it drove more than $8 million in sales.

Just as I was thinking “meh, it’s an okay scent” I spotted a bottle of CB anti-bacterial hand spray next to my laptop. Lol.

Now I’m intrigued. I’ve never smelled it that I know. Amazing it hasn’t been reformulated!

I don’t know if they define “reformulated” the same way I do — many companies don’t — but it is not like it was made with expensive ingredients to begin with… and most IFRA restrictions that force reformulation are on naturals, again, it is not like it is likely it contained any huge concentration of natural materials to begin with 🙂

Thank you for a more detailed definition of reformulation!

I can’t separate this scent from having it combined with the smell of cigarette smoke. My good friend, who was also a coworker, when I was in my mid to late 20s smoked cigs and then sprayed this all over herself to come try and cover up the smell before going back to work.
