Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-to-late July 2025

Posted by Robin on 19 July 2025 258 Comments

It's the third weekend in July, and we're watching the time pass with our routine open thread poll.

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the perfume you just can't make up your mind about, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

    Happy weekend!
Sotd is the comfy yummy Dusita Tonka Latte.
If anyone’s thinking of splurging on expensive hand soaps I cannot recommend Guerlain’s enough. I got one in Rose Cherie and I love it. A little goes a long way and the scent lingers on your skin for a long time after you rinse too!

Is that the liquid soap or a bar?

Liquid in a hefty, luxe feeling glass bottle.
I was comparing them to Dior. Dior liquid soaps cost around the same but come in cheap thin plastic bottles so that was an immediate no.

Great tip, and totally agree about glass vs. plastic! Scented lotions and soaps are so much more thunk-able, and I am always on the lookout for the ones that have some waft. Your Enabler Pin is now pending. 😀

Laundry day, and more work on my office clean out/organization. Date night, we have gotten very lazy about venturing out past our neighborhood places, so going to an old favorite downtown. Not sure what scent I will wear yet, but sprayed a little Yves Rocher Monoi Vague d’Ete this morning, another cheap and cheerful.

Mr. Mossy and I need an adventurous date night, as we too stick to the same place. But it’s also like a family night, as the staff are all long-term and some of them just bring our favorite appetizers to the table without even asking! Hope your old favorite is still that.

SotD is Jasmine Freak from Room 1015. This is so so pretty. Mango, tuberose and jasmine. And I’m not even a floral lover. Not dirty at all. Sadly it doesn’t last on my skin, so I’ll keep respraying and thunk my sample by the end of the day. This is the fourth perfume I’ve tried from this line and I’ve liked them all.

I could not get to sleep last night for the life of me. I originally had my alarm set to get up and make it to 7:30 barre class, but when I was still awake at 1 am I turned my alarm off. Slept til 7:34, so missed class. Trying not to feel guilty about it, I think my body needed sleep more.

SOTD is Chanel No 5 Body Cream and L’Eau EdT. I received a compliment on this today by a barista at a local coffee shop. I have never been complimented on this scent and the gal is only about 20 years old that mentioned it to me. That makes me think this can be worn by all ages.

After reviewing PL67’s iris perfume list from a few weeks back, I have been trying different ones that I don’t already own. This week I put in an order for Boucheron Iris de Syracruse and Courreges Blanc. I will never own as many as she does, but I still have quite a collection😊

I started a book today that’s making an excellent point about AI learning, namely that the data AI is using to generate its answers is biased. The book is “Invisible Women: Data Bias In A World Designed For Men” by Caroline Criado Perez. It’s rather frightening to read.
I’m wearing VC &A Lys Carmin, such a pretty summer scent. I’m also doing laundry while I put off shampooing the carpets, moving furniture isn’t fun.

I’m having a nice visit with my friend and former student, Angela, who kindly agreed to watch an episode of my current intense K-drama “Our Movie” with me last night. I explained the plot and that this is the penultimate episode–tonight’s is the final one–our heroine is dying (this has been known all along) and even though she had not seen the previous 10 episodes, she was already crying with me. We went out for a nice meal at my favorite local Vietnamese restaurant and have talked a mile a minute. My cats are thrilled to have another lap to sit on and more hands here (on hand, so to speak!) to pet them. We’re going out for lunch soon and then to a museum (haven’t decided which one yet). I am wearing MDCI La Ravissante, sweet but refreshing.

The weekend is off to a rough start.

I arrived at the barn this morning for my riding lesson (I go twice a week), only to find out that the horse I usually ride is ill. I had to ride a different one, and it took my body a while to adjust. I’m really worried about him—he’s the one I love the most (though I do love them all). He was being seen by the equine vet when I left, and I can’t stop thinking about him.

Then, when I got home, I received an email from one of my fellow volunteers. She’s been diagnosed with cancer and has to step away from her duties to begin treatment. The news came completely out of nowhere, and I’m still trying to process it.

In other news, I was dead-heading my gardenia plant and wanted to twin with the plant so I am in Le Wild by Chantecaille.

I hope your friend will get the right care. I moved too far North to grow the gardenia bushes I knew as a child of the South. I overwinter a jasmine bush; maybe I should try a gardenia! The memories of the fragrance from gardenias blowing in through the window of my childhood bedroom is foundational to my love of perfume.

Not one that captures that memory. But Jardins de Bagatelle comes closest, though I don’t sniff out gardenia in particular. I also love EL Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia, but same thing – I just love the floral style of it without getting the gardenia moment. Good question; I need to revisit Pacifica Tahitian Gardenia, but I don’t think any perfume I know gives me the same feeling as the actual flower.

    Sotd Hermes Epice Marine.

Nice warm day in the low 80s for a change, but tomorrow will be a different story when we are back to the 90s.
Very quiet weekend at home. My whole family has been on vacation for one week already and they won’t be back until next Friday evening.

In other news, two weeks ago when I was having my evening walk around my neighborhood, I found a kitten on the street, inside a big box crying. The box was near garbage bags outside a building. I immediately took him home with me and isolated him in one of the bedrooms. He was very hungry and scared. The next day, I brought him to the vet who used to see my late doggy Yei. He said the kitten was a male approximately 7 weeks old, most likely abandoned by someone. I asked the vet to give him the vaccines and to run all necessary tests to find out about his health condition. Overall he is ok, except for an infection in both ears and parasites. Medication was prescribed for both conditions. Back home with him, I placed posters around my neighborhood in case he was lost and not abandoned. So far nobody has contacted me. I am still debating if I should bring him to a shelter or keep him. My building management does not allow cats, so I would have to talk to the landlord directly and see if I can convince him to allow me to keep it. I have been very stressed about the whole situation. I was not planning to have any more pets, but this kitten sad luck at a very young age breaks my heart deeply. By the end of next week, I will need to make a decision. I am putting this situation in God’s hands.

    Happy weekend! 🌻

What a sweet story. You have already been a Blessing to the little fellow. Much as I love cats, one must be careful with strays and give them veterinary care (if not taken directly to a shelter), as they usually have fleas and various parasites when found in warm weather. I too will trust he was found by you because you will find his best home wherever it may be. Perfumed hugs for your kindness!!

Thank you, MossyBerry! Surprisingly, he didn’t have any fleas. But he has different types of parasites. He is still isolated and I am very careful handling his litter and keeping the room super clean. I hope he has a better life in the future.

I love people who are kind to animals-thank you for taking him to the vet. Are your personalities compatible? What does he look like? Hoping you get some ease from the stress of the situation. If you can’t keep him I bet there’s a good home waiting in the universe.

He is an orange tabby kitten. Not sure about his personality yet. He gets scared easily. But I have great patience and if I keep him, I will work my best on gaining his trust.

Inspired by ockeghem, SotD is Eau de Gaga to continue the Cheap and Cheerful CP. This morning’s weather was lovely, so I stepped outside planning on just some light garden work. But several tasks called out and before I knew it, it was lunchtime, and I was rather sweaty. I was wearing my house clothes, which I managed not to get dirt on, at least. Shout out to Robin again, for introducing me to Old House Gardens, out of Ann Arbor. Through them, I discovered my love of gladiolus. They do well in my yard, and two varieties over-Wintered. I am going to leave all of them in the ground this year and see what survives. The transplants are all popping up and I should have two or three more colors by mid-August.

Yes, just this spring and I’m glad to say it’s neither! It’s too little sleep supplemented with too much caffeine plus a soupçon of allergic reaction to a new medication Crestor. Add in some rain showers of tears because we saw my Aunt every day and I miss her very very very much, it’s probably a miracle I’m still able to try to make some light comments to anyone. But thank you Jalapeño for that concern! 🤗

I couch-surfed Saturday & Sundae, drank 2L water each day (given I didn’t run to the bathroom all night, I must have been super dehydrated) and read a recommended book “Lessons for Living: What only adversity can teach you.” I thought that you maybe wrote it Glannys because of the wisdom and creativity you share here, but it was written by a Dr Phil Stutz. I got a lot out of it. Perfect for reading a bit then napping, wake up, drink water, repeat repeat repeat!

    I’m in Livre Blanc today.

The last 2 days we’ve had finches (last night) landing on the lavender and eating maybe seeds? The bees seemed to have already huffed everything out already as the flowers are almost grey now. I don’t think we should prune them down as it seems to be a food source. This morning there must have been 15 quail searching for seeds in another part of the garden. I think it was 1 family as the “kids” were all huddled together at one point. I’ll have to let the yard go a bit wild rather than prune like normal.

    Happy weekend everyone!

House cousins with pl67 in Cèdre Sambac. I like it much more than I expected! Since I fell for Agar Ébène I have been exploring more of the Hermessence line, and CS, Vetiver Tonka and Myrrhe Eglantine joined the collection very recently. Myrrhe Églantine is much rosier, and much less incense-y, than expected, but I do like its fresh green rose note more than is usually the case for me with rose scents. Vetiver Tonka will have to wait until cooler weather sets in — tried it and found it lovely but just too much for summer.

I’m wearing Madame Rochas this morning, another very reasonably priced classic.
I didn’t go too wild at the fabric sale yesterday, but I’m thinking of going back today to get something for my mother. I bought a cotton yesterday, with a print of little yachts, and I think my mother would also like it. I’m running a bit of a risk going back…
In perfume news, I’ve just ordered a bottle of Le Galion’s L’Âme Perdue. I’ve only found one place that will ship to New Zealand, and it had been out of stock for months, but I woke up to an email this morning telling me it was available, and I ordered it over breakfast 🙂 .

I’m still in beachy mode today, enjoying LMDLV Vanille Divine Des Tropiques, vanilla and white florals, layered over BBW’s Honolulu Sun body products. ⛱️ 🏖️It continues the ‘cheap and cheerful’ theme as it and 3 other La Maison de La Vanille fragrances were gifted to me by a generous perfumista on another now d/c fragrance website and I enjoy them very much, soft and powdery, one for each season.

Despite some rain today, we did get to visit 2 ponds on this weekend’s pond and garden walk. Watching koi swim lazily about is extremely peace-inducing. Hoping to visit more tomorrow – it was supposed to be a pleasant dry day but, of course, the forecast was just changed and now it’s supposed to be cloudy and rainy. If ever there was a Groundhog Summer, this one would be it! 😝

    Happy almost-Sunday! 🐟🐠

I’m having the best Sunday ever because my cat came back. I saw her Thursday at midnight on the verandah-it was too hot to sleep and we were both trying to find a breeze. I went to bed and she stayed out. No sign of her Fri morning but that’s not unusual. No sign of her Fri night but I didn’t panic. But Sat morning when she didn’t come back-panic. I live on a street with lots of active kids and I asked them f they’d seen her. At dusk two girls said they did see her, and showed me the house. No sign of her. So I went home, brought out her wet food and went back to where she was seen. No luck. Around midnight she let herself in-I was so happy. So was the cat. I think she went adventuring and got lost. Her fur was dusty and she was hungry and thirsty. She keeps coming up to me and touching me. SO today is domestic-spending time with her and cooking so I’ll have lunches ready for the week. No scent yet-I have a sample of FM Acne scent (hate the name) which I might wear later. I actually like the scent-I tried it before. Drydown is amazing.

Hope everyone has a great day and all the pets whereabouts are known to their owners:)

I hope the husky comes home. Sadly, there are so many purebred huskies at all the shelters, at least in Los Angeles, that there is no need to steal them here. Game of Thrones is what set off the husky trend and it hasn’t ebbed yet. We had a half-husky for 16 years, he was a sweeties, but they are very independent and need a lot of exercise and attention and they are runners as well. We have one down the block now who regularly gets out and runs away. Luckily he often runs right to our house, because he likes our dog, so we corral him until the owners can come fetch him. But we’re not far from a busy street and there are tons of coyotes. He’s a big boy but would be no match for four determined coyotes. He wants to play. They want dinner.

Still mulling cheap and cheerful over here and realized I have a very partial mini bottle of Fragonard Santal so I’ve doused myself with that. It was part of a set I once got that was cheap and perhaps is still cheap today if it’s still made, I dunno. It fades pretty quickly but smells marvelous while it lasts and Fragonard makes me think of Provence, which is QUITE cheerful to me. I hope to thunk it tonight.

SotD Mon Guerlain Florale, via a random shelf grab of a plain tester box. I knew it was a Guerlain, but I thought it was a 100ml Bee Bottle of something or other. Haven’t worn it in ages but I am getting a lovely iris-sandalwood vibe.

I’m staying with the ‘water’ theme again today but modifying it from ‘beachy’ to ‘marine/by the sea.’ SOTD is Armani Acqua di Gioia layered over BBW Capri Seaside Citrus body products. Lemon and orange and a hint of mint add a welcome freshness while still maintaining that ‘relaxing by the seashore’ feeling.🌊

Or, should I say, ‘relaxing by the pond’ as we were able to get to 5 more today in the pond and garden walk as the weather, luckily for us, just remained cloudy but held off the rain. Had a friend join us for a nice brunch at a local charcuterie before and then she took us out for ice cream 🍨 afterwards. A great day and an interesting one – such fun to experience the many different ways people include a pond in their gardens.

Getting ready for ribs and chicken off the grill and then watching Gorgeous Guy aka Grantchester on PBS. Hope everyone’s having a lovely evening.

I am going to wear Shalimar Ode a la Vanille today (the Mexican version) and then get Mexican afterwards.

Another Monday! Only one more in July.
I’m going to write about Saturday. It was a family reunion – really, a cousins reunion, and also my mother’s 98th birthday. Talk about a big day! I had relatives come from all over the country and saw people I hadn’t seen in years, and my mom had a great time. She’s the last one in her generation, of course. I wore Seville l’Aube and my Keens for lots of fetching and carrying, and when I finally got home I put some White Cube on top of the far drydown of Seville and it smelled wonderful.
Our county fair is the biggest fair in my state and the fairgrounds are in my town. Tomorrow is Senior day so I’m going to have lunch with my cousins and look at farm animals. Fair food!
Wearing the wonderful Bapteme du Feu from a wonderful NSTer today, the last day of normal temps before a heat wave.

I’ve named this combo Chers Amis Au Coeur Du Jardin. Dear Friends in the Heart of the Garden.

Yesterday a perfume I have been wanting popped up at a discounter. I decided to wait and think about it. I went to pick up my Son and my check engine light came on. Good thing I waited on the perfume. ( not that $50.00 would have changed the car repair bill, but still)
They didn’t have time to look at it today but gave me an idea of the problem($$) so I am taking it back tomorrow. I took a sick day for tonight because I don’t want to break down at midnight when I am supposed to drive home. I’m pretty depressed about the whole thing so I have been cleaning and decluttering. Good thing tomorrow is garbage day. I cleaned out my purse too. I thunked my decant of Both Sides of clouds for my sotd from the purse stash.

Continuing my ‘water’ theme but bringing it to the Eastern seashore and adding a floral note, SOTD is C&E Nantucket Briar layered over CM Sea Grass body lotion (both of which I believe are d/c). It always reminds me of a wonderful camping trip to Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland with the ocean on one side of our campsite, the native wild ponies on the other side roaming free, and wild beach roses blooming everywhere. One of my favorite camping memories ever!❤️

An absolutely beautiful summer day today, all windows wide open, and I’m treasuring every moment at home today just catching up on mundane chores. Midweek our temps are forecast to be be in the upper 90’s with dew points way up in the oppressive zone 😱!

Alaia doesn’t smell like anything else I have. It’s a floral, yes, but the mineral notes in it change things up a lot. At least, I perceive it as mineral and not aquatic or ozonic.
