It's Tuesday. Happy National Nurses Day and International No Diet Day! Birthdays: Sigmund Freud, Willie Mays, George Clooney. What fragrance are you wearing?
You can guess my fragrance easily...it matches today's teapot image, and it's not Diorissimo.
Reminder: 5/9 will be Guessing Game Friday (edition 5)! Our community project for today: describe your perfume to us, OR, give your perfume the name it ought to have had, and we'll see if we can guess what it is. Suggested by Glannys.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Lily of the Valley Teapot from Les Ottomans is £170 at Harrods in the UK.
Hm. There are so many lily-of-the-valley fragrances, Robin. But based on the teapot’s design… Guerlain Muguet?
I am wearing a perfume named after a type of essential oil, but it predominantly smells of a sweet, jammy rose. The house is American, but the founder was born in Japan.
Galbanumgirl got it below…
And gosh. I am brain dead this week. Can’t think of a founder born in Japan at the moment. It will come to me (or someone) later…
Hey, I was gone all day and nobody got this??
Alas, no.
Another hint about the house: it used to have dark purple bottles.
And the perfume itself is composed of several sorts of rose.
Ok, I am just stumped. What was it?
Keiko Mecheri Attar de Roses
Muguet Porcelaine, Robin? Take it from the book poll that you’re not
champing at the bit to tackle the new Twain bio. I’m a little tempted, but daunted by the 1200 pages.
The sun’s out, it’ll actually get into the 60s, so I’m in a springy carnationy scent from a perfumer based in the Netherlands.
Yep, you got it!
No really, I’m done. I look back at my last few year’s biographies, and frankly, I’m not interested! I want something in between a doorstop and one of those little “Penguin lives” (I do love those though).
You’re in Philtre??
Think it actually came out before Philtre–billed as a violet perfume, but very carnation-forward on me.
Vivacious?
Yep.
What a lovely teapot!
My sotd is an easy one. From a popular, venerable perfume house, it is sometimes called the Queen. Classic lemon and vanilla up top.
It’s chilly and damp this morning but the sun is supposed to come out later while temps rise into the 60s. I really hope we get the sun. All the lilacs are blooming now and the dogwoods, I need to go for a drive to look at my favorite spring trees.
Shalimar?
That’s what I am thinking too.
But of course!
The Queen 👸
❤️
Lilacs, dogwoods both in bloom here too, and my fringe tree is in full scented glory…
I’m wearing a fragrance named after a flowering tree blooming in East Texas right now. It is quite citrusy when first applied, but then it is listed as a cologne.
Malle Eau De Magnolia?
Although, is it actually a cologne?
Second guess: Atelier Cologne Sud Magnolia.
Glannys is correct. Sud Magnolia, which is one of perhaps two manolia scents in my collection.
Wild stab, 4711 Magnolia?
I was not aware that 4711 did a magnolia scent, but now I will look for it. I know Demeter does one, so I might look for that one also.
It is part of their floral collection 🙂
It’s going to be quite warm here today, so no heavy ambers for me this morning. My SOTD evokes the way I imagine a drive from the south of France into northern Italy would smell — lemon groves, cypress trees, and just a hint of ocean on the breeze. I much prefer the original EDT of this over the recently released EDP version.
Eau d’Hadrien?
Glannys for the win!
Acqua di Parma Colonia?
Ooh, no, but now I have to smell that one! Or maybe get myself to Nice, rent a convertible, and head to Italy. 😆
someone talk me off the edge?!
I was walking through Bloomies and I want one of these Hermes perfume sets they have for mother’s day. The box..the everything!
They have Twilly, Barenia, Eau des Merveilles, Un Jardin sur le Nil
Anyone have a favorite? I don’t need this..just want it!
Off to a friends lunch today at the library-we are hosting Elizabeth Strout
My clue: I’m British-born, earthy and light, a fruit you’d pick in summer
Is it Jo Malone Blackberry and Bay?
Yes 🙌
Lovestosmellgood, are you meeting with her? I love her writing! I just finished My Name is Lucy Barton, followed by The Burgess Boys, over Easter. If you have time will you please tell us about meeting her? Total fangirl here 🙂
Well, have you read any interviews about her?
She was very quirky, dismissive about herself and her approach to her work. I felt bad actually for the library staff member interviewing her – not easy!
However, I laughed a lot at her answers and able to separate my love for her books and her as a person.
I haven’t read many interviews, but I found her work through a podcast-the BBC Bookclub podcast. It’s introduced me to so many authors I now love. She was definately self effacing, and funny and quirky.
I also remember Colm McCann interviewing Michael Ondaatje, at your public library, about methods of working and character development. I haven’t listened to that in about 15 years-off to see if I can still find it. 🙂
Ondaatje is a great author! The English patient one of my favorite books.
Let me know if you find it and if you could post the link.
Any advice for the Hermes gift sets above..or I should just get Galop lol
Ohhh-you’ve wanted Galop for a bit, right? You cannot go wrong with rose and leather, IMHO. But this is the season for colognes, and New York gets hot in the summer. Their Rhubarb Ecarlart is beautiful in the heat. I’m not much help-I had to collect a lot of Hermes scents, too-my inner child required soothing 🙂
I’m a big fan of Eau des Merveilles so would go with that. I really could wear this every day. Been thinking about getting the lotion.
Is this one long lasting ?
It is on me, but it took many years for me to finally fall in love. First, I didn’t like it and then I couldn’t smell it. Now I love it and it lasts for several hours on me.
Ooh I would want Un Jardin Sur le Nil, it’s a summer staple for me. I’m sure you have smelled it at some point and if not, I think you would like it. There’s both mango and incense and it lasts all day but isn’t a bit heavy.
ok-I will try!
I have a ton of those Hermes 15 ml bottles and I love them.
If you want the set, I say get it. If you don’t need the box, you can often find individual 15 ml bottles on ebay at not bad prices.
If you buy direct from Hermes, you can usually pick the exact 4 you want…assuming it’s in stock.
Twilly is an easy to wear choice for summer.
How is the longevity
Was a little busier than normal yesterday and wore no 5 edt to get me through. Just need to finish up vacuuming and hop into shower. I am debating on if I should go with Epic 56 or Narciso Rodriguez edt for today’s SOTD.
I was busier than usual today, hoping for a slacker day tomorrow! Hope you found the right thing to wear 🙂
Mine is a green lavender, discontinued and awarded 5 stars in Perfumes The Guide (or at least 4)
I had my hair cut this weekend with the curlsys method. Interestingly, my hair has never been straiter. Quite a disaster that, but it will grow back and maybe show some waves again.
Hope your hair recovers quickly!
Thanks, I am just so annoyed by it all, and it’s just hair….
I’m guessing Sous le Vent. If so, you smell fabulous, and I’m envious.
Not Sous le vent
Nicolaï pour Homme???
Sorry about your hair!
Yes, you got it Robin!
I’m equally amused and disappointed that something this trivial has left me so grumpy.
Hey, hair is personal.
I have barely wavy but not at all curly hair, that I blow dry straight. Many years ago a hairdresser convinced me to “stop fighting it” and try a curly cut. It was a disaster…my hair does not curl. Admittedly I was young, but still, I am ashamed to admit I cried when I got home!
ok it’s a gorgeous day here, with grass getting green , finally. I loved the teapot, and my SOTD is Dior Escale a Portofino. I love this scent and I really love the bottle-it’s a complicated almost cracked effect. I meant to arrange my summer colognes in the half bath so I can admire all their pretty bottles. There used to be a Hermes ad for their coloured bottles of cologne, and the little bottles were lined up like people waiting to dive off a diving board. I love that ad.
I remember that ad!
My SOTD is an easy guess. It is a floral aldehyde from a French perfume house. It is on the light side.
A flanker of Chanel No. 5? Chanel No 5 L’Eau?
L’Eau would be my guess too. Or maybe Eau Premier, I can’t remember if Kris has both.
You were right!
You win again with L’Eau!

A late entry to the book list as I am still reading is the Chinese classic The Dream of the Red Chamber ( The Book of Stone) which I’ve seen described as the Chinese equivalent of Proust , and twice the length of War and Peace. Seems like a good winter read, then. It was written in the 1700s and is one of those great ( sagas) social stories intricately told. So far, so great. Wearing Bapteme du Feu for rich, spicy notes.
I just read this! Or, as I found out, maybe Chapter 1 of The Book of Stone, as it was a teeny book. Penguin strikes again…
That beautiful teapot inspired me to wear my Muguet Porcelaine again tonight. I saw the answer in an above comment.
🙂
That is a lovely teapot!
No guessing here, just a few sprays of Paris – Deauville.
I guess you smell really good!
Great scent. I thought about that today as it is very warm here.
And comes in a complete set…
The day started out very foggy, but by the time I went to look at my iris patch, the mists had all burned away and the day was bright and clear. In its second year, the iris bed is doing great. As they wind down, the sweet, heavy fragrance of the purple milkweed will soon follow.
Do iris plantings take a while to establish themselves?
These didn’t! I was quite surprised at how much these spread this year – a different, modern variety I tried in a wetter spot grew slowly for years. This patch has two heirloom varieties (pallidas and honorabiles) and is a spot that gets lots of morning sun and not much moisture. I’d say I will have to separate them after next year.
PS – I forgot to add that the above is a hint for my scent of the day, which I picked by the events described. 🙂
Iris Silver Mist, I would think then?
I am having a good Day at the office…
Are you “Happy?”
Meaning, is office-friendly Happy your scent of the day?
Terrific guess, although it was in fact Amouge Dia. You’re right that it does make me happy!
This is a great CP, but a bit tricky with the differences in time zones – I’ll have to look at all the clever descriptions and answers later.
Meanwhile, I’m wearing a perfume from an Australian brand, number four in the series and the bottle shape is a representation of the brand’s name.
Map of the heart something
Wow, forgot all about that brand.
I’m wearing the pinkest perfume I own!
They have kept showing dire predictions of big tornadoes but so far there’s only been a couple of drops of rain. So I got brave and ventured out for lunch at a nice local Italian restaurant with good lunch sandwiches. I’m back home now and might be hearing some faint thunder.
Delina
Ha ha, exactly–you’ve got it!
I hope any bad weather stays away.
Hopefully thunder is the only thing you have to deal with.
SOTD = take a guess
No IG post because of the CP! I actually started on Saturday and skipped a day so here are the clues:
Saturday
– one word U.S. state name
– one of NST participants live here
– smells pine-ish green to me
Sunday
– two-letter name
– juice is red (!)
– incense
Tuesday
– name includes a color
– a toy that I would never give to children except my brother and I played with these
– supremely floral
Happy guessing!
In other news, if you have decided to do it yourself or even if you engaged in legal help to do it, you may benefit from reading this freebie from the New York Times:

I tried to cheat but AI says there is no perfume named for a State. I know that’s not true though.
I’m guessing Mississippi Medicine or New York Intense ( even though those are 2 word names) I just like playing. Lol.
AI is not all it is credited for. springpansy got Saturday right!
Saturday: Colorado!!
And I’m wearing something by that same artist (if I’m right) that smells very unique, like my dad’s woodworking shop.
Ding ding ding!
Stumped!
No way! They are somewhat obscure just based on distribution.
Sunday = Chris Rusak Io?
You got it!
I don’t know either. Please put the answers in today’s post.
Will do!
I’m in a tropical white floral from a New York based brand that has a very specific naming convention for their perfumes.
High of 76 degrees and already very warm at 1:15 p.m. here in Seattle. I bet I’ll be properly hot when I go on my evening walk later.
Le labo? bond 9
Yes, you’re on the right track with one of those brands.
Tuberose from le labo
It is Le Labo but not Tubereuse.
Is it Ylang 49?
Kris and galbanumgal got it right – Lys 41!
Lys 41?
My guess too.
You’re both correct!
That’s it!
I’m having a lazy day off. I enjoyed a nice breakfast with my Cousin this morning.
I wore one of my Celebrity perfumes that gets compared to Coco Mademoiselle. The Celebrity is an actress from a modern family TV comedy.
Is it Sofia?
It is!
I hope you enjoyed the lunch!
Glad to hear you were able to spend time with one of your cousins today!
Sotd YSL Libre L’Absolu Platine with a lovely covering of Eucalyptus-Lavender shea butter.
Orange blossom for some springtime to every thing there is a season, eucalyptus to remember to breathe deeply and slowly, lavender for calm.

Turn Turn Turn the Byrds on Ed Sullivan
Excellent, hope you are indeed living up to the song today…
Trying to. We sang this at Dad’s funeral.
💔🩵
❤️🩹
I’m blaming brain fog on a cold so I’m simply in Diptyque Vetyverio EdT on one wrist and the EdP on the other.
Yuck! Hope your cold goes away ASAP.
I’m in a fresh, citrus scent in which the company also makes lovely cosmetics. (Lisa Eldridge was very instrumental in the cosmetic side of things).
O de Lancome?
You got it!
Indole?
I’ve never tried Idole.
Calyx?
It was O de Lancome; galbanumgal figured it out.
It’s raining, it’s pouring, the old man is snoring! And it’s snowing up in the foothills and mountains. Rather chilly, too. Glad my brother checked out my car on Sunday when it was warm and sunny.
Commando today, but wearing scented lotion in the usual spots.
It’s already May!
LOL! Sometimes people are skiing at A-Basin into June out here.
