Happy Friday! It's also Rose Day, plus we have a few birthdays: Charles Dickens, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Sinclair Lewis, Eubie Blake. Our community project for today is a spin on rose. Wear your favorite fragrance that has a rose note but doesn't smell primarily of rose, or wear a rose fragrance layered with something that tones down the rose.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in vintage Guerlain Jicky.
Reminder: 2/14 is Valentine's Day. Wear a fragrance that expresses your feelings about the holiday, or that reminds you of someone you love.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Today, I’m actually on my third perfume that matches the CP’s criteria.
In the morning, I wore Chanel No. 22. Later, I decided to test OJ Frangipani and was surprised to learn it contains rose. It’s a lovely fragrance, but as for the rose… maybe just a hint, once the initial blast of lime and linden blossom fades.
And finally, at 4 PM, after showering, I applied another fragrance – Ungaro Diva. And old-school chypre – maybe I can smell rose a little, but I definitely do not think of it as a rose perfume.
Sometimes when I wear Diva, I get a honey/rose bomb, and other times lots of patch. Am phobic of patch intensive scents, which is why it languishes in my cabinet. Would be curious to see what it’s like on someone else!
I was going to wear vintage Diva today because to me it was always a heavy-duty chypre with rose as a minor player at best — like you, I never thought of it as a rose perfume — but when I put a spritz of it on last night as a test, pretty much all I could smell was the rose, probably because I was looking for it. It was a real eye-opener: I thought I knew this scent really well but it has facets I never noticed before.
Diva reminds me a bit of EL Knowing. It’s a rose chypre on me, with that giant fluorescent rose damascone thing blinking on and off saying ‘look at me, look at me.’
What a coincidence! I was choosing between Diva and Knowing before going with Diva. Well, they are both old school chypres, and I think what I smell is that chypre accord, not individual notes. Never noticed rose in Knowing.
I never smelled rose in the OG version of EL Knowing either. Just a very thorny chypre.
Hi Glannys, the rose in No 22 must be very well blended–I don’t smell it either. Ungaro Diva, that’s a lovely one, my fave of that line is the original Ungaro in the cobalt blue bottle. That is a wild thing.
Because SheriG mentioned it yesterday, am in Cuir Cannage from a very cute splash mini. Good for today’s cold & wind.
An apt theme song for this week’s cp:

You smell mahhhvelous! Can you detect the rose in it? I couldn’t.
Nope, just expensive, well-mannered leather.
A blast to the 80’s musical past!
Scent twin today, and even mini splash bottle twin!
And no, I’m not detecting any rose, just a general abstract hint of florals.
Hello and tgif!
Sotd is Kilian Good Girl Gone Bad Extreme. Big gourmand white floral with a rose note that if you take it out, I’d most probably not notice.
I am trying out Sol De Janeiro’s Delicia Drench Body Butter. You might know the brand’s famous Bum Bum Cream, which I quite enjoy (it smells quite yummy). I am glad Sephora sent me this sample instead of me buying a mini tub because I do not like it. It leaves a rather tacky finish and doesn’t smell half as good as BBC.
TGIF is right!! (Actually for me it was thank god it is acupuncture day…)
Interesting! I like the Delicia Drench more than the Bum Bum Cream. No stickiness for me, but I keep it to super dry spots only.
My favourite stealth rose is Comme des Garçons Carnation, which is mostly carnation and clove but has a shot of red red rose, to boost the floralcy, and red pepper, to amp up the spiciness. It’s probably my favourite carnation (which is my favourite flower) because it’s completely in your face and it is not kidding around.
It’s not just – Carnation! It’s – CARNATION!!
It’s a stunner. In fact, I liked a lot of perfumes from that Series2: Red batch ( even the rose one).
I had decants of four of the Series 2 Red scents: not Sequoia, for some reason, but as for the rest, I loathed Harissa (it smelled like food I wouldn’t eat), had no opinion on Palisander, and liked Rose but not enough to buy it. Carnation, though, was instant love, and I bought a full bottle.
Kanuka, my fave from the Red series is definitely the boozy, can’t walk a straight line Sequoia. I cherish the two inches at the bottom of my very red bottle. Oh and hey, a very belated thanks for recommending all those books last weekend, the Italian ones and a few more that I’ve now ordered. Like Robin, I too get a lot of my reading suggestions from this site these days. You are an erudite bunch.
I have a full bottle too! The perfume is VERY short-lived on me but hey, I forged on anyway. It is very lovely!
It really is surprisingly short-lived. Thank goodness it comes in a big 100-mL bottle. I had to reapply it repeatedly (not that I’m complaining about that part).
I’m wearing a mix of Alkemia perfume oils. I thought about wearing Cafe Rose by Tom Ford, but last time I wore it, I got no coffee, just rose. Today I layered Rose Alchemy, Yule Rose, and Caffaeum, and it worked. Although the rose is there, the chief note is coffee.
That sounds perfect! And like maybe I need some Caffaeum.
My selection for the CP today is Chanel No. 19 EDP. The rose in it is not exactly subdued, but it isn’t super rose-y either (which is good for me as I’m not generally a huge fan of rose in perfumery). It’s most noticeable when compared wrist-to-wrist with the EDT formulation — where the EDP has roses, the EDT has a fresh, slightly grassy note. I love them both.
No 19 is more of a crisp, sparkling green than anything. A very elegant scent.
A woman after my own heart!
One of these days I will get a bottle of No. 19, assuming I can decide between the EdT and EdP.
I am a huge fan of straight forward rose perfumes – there are so many that I love – but today for the CP I am wearing Hermès Iris Ukiyoé, which only has a hint of rose that I sometimes detect and sometimes don’t. In any case, it’s a lovely scent.
I will have to look at my own notes to see if I noticed the rose…I suspect not!
Happily, someone mentioned Paris-Venise earlier this week , so an easy choice.
Done and done!
I’m wearing Cuir Cannage today, so scent twins with galbanumgal, but it’s in the front row, an easy reach.
How are you doing? I hope you’re mending and able to get about your day without too much pain.
Just taking acetaminophen now, and doing exercises the PT gave me. Stitches come out Tuesday!
I am wearing Parfum de Peau by Montana. It has rose in it but you’d never guess that. The opening is a oddball mix of marigold and cassis, but what it smells like in practice is cut green peppers sprinkled with grapefruit rind. Then for a few minutes it smells just like warm radiator steam before heading into the drydown, warm burnished animalics sweetened with a drop of amber. If you like animalics, this one is unique and a must try.
It sounds like a real shapeshifter, and very intriguing!
Yes, I agree! I’m on the fence on animalics, but if they’re good they can be wonderful.
Feeling ultra glam (and slightly ridiculous) on a drizzly morning, wearing “La Nuit” from Paco Rabanne. Once again, a stellar review from Angela on NST brought this one to my attention; she made it sound so exciting and enticing that I sought it out on eBay.
Man, oh man, I’m in Perfume with a capital P, and basically just being dragged along for the wild ride.
Roses are in there somewhere, supposedly, but there’s so much going on that I can’t really detect them.
I’m not often in the mood to call quite this much attention to myself, and certainly not at this early hour. (Note to self: It’s not called “Le Matin.”)
Happy Friday, everyone!
Isn’t that the one that Luca Turin called “Tabu on a horse”? You smell great! Probably from several feet away!
That’s the one!
love that line
I hated it so much when it came out that it was my reference unspeakable/unwearable scent. I wasn’t ready for it in 1985! Then I got a decant in a collection years later and recognized it for the masterpiece it was, and finally got a quarter ounce of the extrait a couple of years ago. It doesn’t read as rosy at all, does it? Just this glowering nimbus of patchouli and oakmoss and all things animalic. It’s barely on the good side of too-muchness, and it’s heaven.
To my nose, it’s not as raunchy as Angela’s review led me to expect. It is HUGE, however, so I have no doubt all those animalic things are in there somewhere. It’s a stunner, though perhaps not the wisest choice to start the day. Next time, I’ll embrace its drama after the sun goes down.😊
This morning for coffee I wore Comete
Now that I have showered, I am in my sample of 31 Rue Cambon
Keeping with the look, I am sporting a clean face and Rouge Libre lip from the rouge allure collection 💄
Both are great fragrances!
I am blaming Carole for inspiring me to buy and try some deep berry lipsticks. I bought this one today on a whim
31RC is so elegant and poised!
I’m wearing the rather wonderful L’Artisan Al Oudh ( Duchaufour). It’s a blend of sticky spices, resins and woods with a rose glow, kind of like the rose is the first streak of light in a dawn sky ( which is what I’m looking at as I write). The mornings are noticeably darker now and the birds no longer sing at dawn, so the start of day is very still, almost silent except for one young neighbour who walks to work at 4.45am. I hear her trudging up her driveway. I think she works in a supermarket.
delicious you are, Kanuka.
I’m going to join Robin in vintage Jicky.
I only have a little bit left of a mini bottle but this is a perfect occasion to enjoy it. I know I always say this but I wish I could wear/enjoy more recent versions of Jicky but the particular funky note doesn’t work for me. And I’m a gal who appreciates Rien, M/Mink, Ruade, etc.
The vintage is so smooth and well blended. I do have a vintage empty bottle and fantasize that the perfume gods will magically fill it to the brim!
Honestly I think the real animalic ingredients were easier to wear. Not arguing we should still have them, but they were easier to wear.
That makes a lot of sense.
SOTD is Iris Poudre. I had no idea there was rose in there somewhere. Fragrantica says it does so there you have it!
And you smell fabulous in this mysterious beauty!🌹
It is a beauty.
You do smell fantastic Kris!
My comment below was supposed to go here. Thanks Gail!
I zapped it 🙂
Thanks Robin.
Iris Poudre is probably one of your top 3 iris perfumes, I’d guess.
It is and is definitely one of my top 5 of all of my fragrances.
I wore a vintagish no 19 edp yesterday and was thinking of no 22 edt but in the end, I chose no 5 edp. The rose in no 5 isn’t so obvious it’s more luminous.
I really like No 5 EdP even though Luca Tania slagged it. The vintage EdP is really oily and sandalwoody and there are days when it’s quite my jam. But I love No 5 in all its permutations.
I’m in Aromatics Elixir today. There’s a bit of rose in it but I certainly can’t pick it out. It’s perfect for the cold sunny day here. Happy Friday everyone!
Is Aromatics Elixir a 4-season perfume for you?
I think I’ve worn it a time or two in the summer. Plus it can be a good one, depending on my mood; it speaks volumes sometimes! 😄
A lot of the vintage classic chypres and floral/Orientals featured rose but in a minor role as part of a larger floral ensemble. I was mulling over a few options from my upstairs storage shelves, things I don’t wear very often, and chose Miss Dior Cherie. It’s an older bottle but not vintage, an EdP, and I now see why I don’t wear it much. It’s quite sweet and powdery/fruity. Supposedly it has caramel and popcorn but I’m not picking up on those notes yet–maybe later. It’s another warm day today and I’m going to a talk out at my old university department (because it’s by a friend) and I hope I won’t gas everyone out with this. It’s pretty darned potent! I only did three sprays but golly! Oh and also, LOTS of patchouli. The rose just is not noticeable at all to me.
That is a great scent!
In Chergui, because it was mentioned yesterday, though I don’t recall by who.
I think I’ll need a nap this afternoon! Glad it’s Friday.
I have never smelled Cherqui but know a lot of people love it.
I think I will join you in a nap this afternoon🙂
The sun is shining! It’s been a while. 🌞
I’m wearing Dior Addict, which Fragrantica says contains rose although I just smell the vanilla. This is a fun CP, I still have oodles of choices.
Enjoy your day everyone.
It is a fun cp! Rose seems to be so prevalent in fragrances but can be a wonderful supporting note. You smell great! Like you, I mostly get vanilla in Addict.
Glad to hear that you are seeing some sun today! You were stuck in the gloom for quite a while, weren’t you?
Yep, we call it the permacloud.
Sounds horrid.
Inspired by ringthing yesterday, I’m in Coco edp. I smell very fancy for a day of errands, laundry and cleaning.
I made a post office and grocery store run, now I’m home to tackle the laundry and cleaning. Our kitchen needs a deep dive. It was nice to have all the kids home for extended time over the holidays, but have 5 adults in the house means the kitchen became the most used room. Yet, somehow I’m the only one that sees that the oven needs a cleaning?🤨
Smelling fabulous!
I need to clean our entire twin home this weekend. Luckily, it is not huge so doesn’t take too long. Hubby and I are neat freaks so it makes it easier.
Thanks!😀
Twins!
Sana Jardin Incense Water, a lovely rose.
Rained all night and low clouds this morning. Lots of training to do for Red Cross today.
OKAY for sunscreen seekers – I hunt sunscreen like it’s fragrance.
Am a whiter shade of pale. And have had sun poisoning when living in KSA. And travel to hot, sunny locales. With my hat. And sunscreen.
Beauty of Joseon – NO Affiliation – has just come out with tinted sunscreens. And they have cool tones. 16 dollars. Its wonderful. Not sticky, no yellow undertones. Very sheer, goes on like a dream and doesn’t settle in my 71 year old lines. I am so happy all it needed was a few touches of concealer. Success!!
You read my mind! I just finished my tinted sunscreen that was always too shiny for my taste and am looking for a new one. Sounds like it’s on the matte side?
Have you tried Garnier spf50 vitamin C …tinted and fluid , perfect . And cheap.
https://www.woolworths.co.nz/shop/productdetails?stockcode=944639&name=garnier-vitamin-c-daily-tinted-glow-spf-50
This one.
Rose is a favorite scent note of mine and in many of my fragrances, especially in February, when my theme is chocolate+ roses (sometimes together, sometimes separately.). My choice for today’s cp is Dame Perfumery Chocolate + Milk. You might be surprised to learn rose is a note found here, but it is. And I can smell it softly behind the smooth and creamy milk chocolate, adding a bit of floralcy and taking this scent out of the strictly gourmand genre. I do have the Chocolate + Rose and will be wearing that tomorrow. 💕 them both.
Heading in to the city tonight for the annual University of Chicago Folkfest – tonight’s schedule features bluegrass, Irish, electric blues, old-time, and Cajun 🎶. Always a good time – I especially ❤️ the Cajun last year. Really toe-tapping!
Wishing everyone a lovely weekend ahead 💐
Have fun at the Folkfest Laila, that sounds great and I am sure you will be smelling perfect for it.
Instead of a smoothie am having oranges again, in the UK our citrus fruits come usually from Spain.
Today Chloe Rose essentielle intense, this scent cheers me up, I would say Chloe does rose very well, I haven’t explored Chloe enough, I think the house is underrated and doing this all natural thing for some of their perfumes, REI is one. Tonight for the CP it’s Phaedon Rouge Avignon, raspberry is prominent at the top, it has some gourmand notes but is not foodie. I bought two Phaedon perfumes early on, the other one is Pure Azur, a summer perfume with fig note and a lovely jasmine, summery without being beachy and solar, it used to be a very affordable house too but I don’t want to look at the prices now.
I got a chuckle when I read “REI” in your post. I realized that you were abbreviating the Chloe perfume, but I thought of a sporting goods chain here in the States that is called, yep, REI.
😀I didn’t know about REI the store, thank you, it’s precisely why being on NST keeps me interested.
SOTD = Neela Vermeire Mohur Extrait
Lovely and straight-up rose 🌹 so I am actually anti-CP bit we’re all good. 👍

At the end of the day, the option of which provider to choose for my insurance has more to do with how much I am willing to pay versus “the best” (lowest out-of-pocket deductible, highest premium). I am choosing what’s best for me (at my location) without going for the least expensive. Thanks for those who responded to my question on Wednesday. I have a few days to think about it.
Now I am looking into ROTH-IRA conversions. There’s a lot to consider! And my 2024 tax return!
What a stunning perfume bottle! 😮
That it is!
It’s a beautiful Saturday morning, and I’ve been able to go out early without a jacket! I’m sitting in a café waiting Un Jardin sur Le Nil.
Wow, you smell great! I love Le Nil so much I bought a backup bottle when the first was only about an eighth gone.
Yay! I am sure you mean wafting, which is just the thing to do 🙂
You smell great Robin. I would love to find vintage Jicky one day.
I am in Aromatics Elixir, it has Rose but I don’t smell it, it is mostly in the background.
This is my Mom’s signature scent and smells amazing on her, whenever she wears it, she receives compliments from strangers, people approach her to ask what she is wearing and where they can find it. It smells ok on me! I always keep a bottle.
I never noticed rose in Aromatics Elixir either. Next time I wear it, I will see if I can find it.
AE is such a well-blended fragrance that I have trouble distinguishing notes, but it is a fave from way back.
I bet AE smells great on you! I wore it today too and didn’t locate the rose either. My bottle is new(er) so the opening is a bit different from the original scent but in about an hour it’s “ah, there’s the familiar scent”.
It was my go-to covid scent when I was wanting to keep a large radius around me. I probably applied 8-10 sprays!
lol Gail
I don’t have much left…I wear a drop at a time 🙂
I wore Mitsouko today for a lunch date with husband and other family members. Rose is listed among its many indistinguishable (to my poor nose) notes. I don’t get the peach, I don’t really recognize anything at all in it, and yet I think it is magical and absolutely crave it at times. It has the virtue of not being particularly loud on me, and I think it’s a good dining-out fragrance because of that and it’s non-foody nature; I don’t like my fragrance to impact my or anyone else’s experience of their meal.
Mitsouko is amazing!
Gorgeous sunny weather today, with temps in the low to mid 60’s! I made the most of it by running a few errands this afternoon, because several cold fronts are predicted to blow thru in the next week or so. I might have to drip my faucets again… 😭🥶🥶🥶
SOTD = back in Flowerbomb EdP again. Loved the far drydown of it so much this morning that I had to re-up.
70’s here today. Just perfect but sadly I slept through most of it. Enjoy those temps while you can! 🌞
Believe me, I did enjoy! Tomorrow is supposed to be 20 or 25 degrees cooler than today was. And that’s the nice day of the weekend.
You have me searching for Flowerbomb deals now. Lol.
I wore it about 10 years ago. I really enjoyed the matching shower gel. It was very fragrant and moisturizing.
I have a couple of travel sprays in addition to my bottle. Would you like one?
Oh dang Jalapeno that would be awesome!
I think I still have your email address. I’ll ping you later.
I have a bottle with a few ml left, I need to get it out and spray with this in mind, thx.
Cool beans!
Enjoy the good weather while it lasts. You know, I’m not sure I ever smelled Flowerbomb.
Flowerbomb is a gourmand offspring of TM Angel in one sense. It does have the vanilla and patch. Maybe a bit of caramel in there too?
But there are lighter elements in it that I can’t perceive in Angel, like citrus and tea. It’s worth a sniff even though it has been noticeably reformulated (to my nose) to emphasize the foody notes.
Flowerbomb! That is from so long ago but you smell great!
Thanks! I wore it again today, and it smells so good in cool weather. Been enjoying the wafts all day.
Not a rose in sight or smell tonight. Instead, I’ve slathered on Vanilla Bean Noel Body Lotion and then on top of that, a few hefty spritzes of CSP Amour de Cacao. Good enough to eat!
Ibuprofen and coffee have finally kicked in, thanks to all the gods of body aches and fatigue! Looking forward to seeing some balloons in the morning on my way out. Happy Friday! 🎈
Happy Friday Deva!
Ooh, that sounded like a great fragrance combo!
I’m late. I copied ringthing from yesterday and wore Coco edp version. My sprayer doesn’t spray so I have to take the nozel off and stab myself with the straw part. Lol. I’ve tried running it through hot water but it didn’t work.
Did you try soaking the nozzle in hot water for 10 or 15 minutes? I’ve unplugged hairspray bottles doing that.
I just ran it under hot water. I will try soaking it. Thanks!
Quite late but it’s been busy here, finally checking in with Amouage Lyric, which has rose but Many Other Things too, so I hope I qualify for the CP. This is from a decant I got at the last swapmeet, thx so much to my swap partner!
The rules are simple: if you say you qualify, you qualify!
I went with Red Queen by 4160 Tuesdays, as it is a rosy fragrance made for someone who doesn’t like rose fragrances. I also happen to like Red Queen a lot. It has accords of amber, incense, and raspberry along with rose.
Red Queen is gorgeous stuff!
Isn’t it? I love it!
I’ve been meaning to comment all day and finally am getting around to it. I went a similar route to you, Robin, with Cologne du 68. Lots of beautiful materials in here, including rose, but all I smell is a beautiful balanced fougere. Yesterday I wore another stunner, Fūm Ariose.
Rose All Dae is a lovely apple crisp scent inspired by a wine (don’t know how to do the accent mark) that does have rose in it that I’m not particularly picking out
Wearing HG Slowdive and the beautiful beeswax note inspired me to put honey on my toast! Mmmm!
