Tuesday scent of the day 12/31

Posted by Robin on 31 December 2024 145 Comments

It's Tuesday. Happy New Year’s Eve, and stay safe out there! It's also the seventh day of Christmas, the seventh night of Hanukkah and the sixth day of Kwanzaa. RIP Jimmy Carter. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando at the moment in the hopes I might make it to the gym, but my plan for later is Theorema. Tea at the moment is Chai Imperial from Palais des Thés.

Reminder: on 1/3, wear a fragrance to match Mocha Mousse, Pantone's color of the year for 2025: "For 2025, the Pantone Color Institute selects PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse, a warming, brown hue imbued with richness. It nurtures us with its suggestion of the delectable qualities of chocolate and coffee, answering our desire for comfort. // Underpinned by our desire for every day pleasures, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse expresses a level of thoughtful indulgence. Sophisticated and lush, yet at the same time an unpretentious classic, PANTONE 17-1230 Mocha Mousse extends our perceptions of the browns from being humble and grounded to embrace aspirational and luxe."

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2025, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Teapot ARECORE Large Brown – Jinsui Tokoname ("This traditional teapot is hand crafted by Jinsui, a historic pottery maker based in Tokoname, one of 6 ancient and famous kilns in Japan. It features a stainless steel mesh filter which is removable. It is available in large and small size, and 3 colours") is €55 at Koto Tea in Kyoto.

I am reading a historical fiction book at the moment that I think you might really enjoy. It is The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon. I am only about 1/4 of the way through it, but so far so good.

Also, I had a question for you. I know you purchased Encens Mythique. Just curious if this smells at all like POAL. You may have already said in an earlier post. It sounds good to me, but I hesitate to try it as I saw one person said it smelled like a barbershop. If it is masculine then I may not be interested. TIA

Butting in to say, EM does not smell much like POAL to me. The huge difference is that EM is aldehydic and also has a ambergris/salty note. I would be happy to send you a sample, if you’d like!

I was going to say the same thing, do you want a sample.?

It’s not sweet, it’s a deep dark rose with incense and then Guerlainade at the end.

I love that teapot…and it’s affordable! Hmm…was thinking about spending a bit of my Christmas money on me, though there’s still a whole heap of travel expenses that it needs to go to, as well.

I haven’t been able to post / read much lately as we spent a week getting home and I’ve been jetlagged. Today is really the first day I’ve been able to sleep until a normal hour. We saw my 94-year-old grandmother in the Midwest, and then picked up my cat and car from my father in eastern Washington, so it’s been a lot of flying and driving with eight bags and then a cat and her stuff. And then right back in to work when I got home, though fortunately it’s pretty quiet.

No SOTD yet. Maybe Ummagumma, though that’s probably a darker brown than the CP. Or maybe St. Honoré. Fortunately my new purchases made it home just fine, along with everything else (so far…not totally unpacked yet).

Like ockeghem, am still jet lagged — we arrived home around 1 am Saturday after a five-hour delay at Dulles (connection to home airport). Also like ockeghem, and still commando. But the sun is shining!!!! Yay!

I like the teapot, but although I love many browns, the mocha mousse does nothing for me.

Our cat is very glad that we are home, and we had dinner last night at the home of some of our very dearest friends, so all of that is helping with being back in the U.S. and with missing Ireland. Once again, returning from four months abroad has inspired both of us to purge our belongings. My perfumes are safe, but clothes, books, old sheets and towels, random things foisted on me by relatives but to which I have no attachment…all fair game.

Best wishes to all NSTers for a safe New Year’s Eve, and for a very peaceful and happy 2025!

Rabbit rabbit rabbit and Happy New Year to everyone! New Year’s Day here and I’m listening to the dawn chorus, the most peaceful way to welcome a potentially busy day ( it’s my son’s birthday ). It’s still dark but I have been outside and it’s misty and drizzly, and very calm. The year I turned 60 I decided to start a daily diary. It was a whim, and I didn’t expect to keep at it, but somehow I have and so today I can start a new one…kind of like the first day of school all over again when you had all those untouched exercise books, and how exciting it was to enter the first words on the page. I suspect, that for many of us at NST, these daily perfume “ comments” are our true diary entries. Wearing Devotion, which seems nice for this family day.

Just skimmed over Dacob’s youtube presentation announcing that a set of Les Exclusifs in 35 ml sizes (sprays) will be available from the boutiques only beginning next month. You have to buy a set of 5.
Not sure if limited edition or not. He’s pretty stoked, lol.
We had sun yesterday for the 1st time in seemingly weeks, but now we’re back to a wintry mix. Wearing Alahine, which I’d forgotten about for awhile.

Hi everyone! Hope everyone is having a relaxing day. I’m watching the Thin Man movie marathon on TCM and waiting for my husband to cook a seafood gumbo. We haven’t made it still midnight in years and this one will be the same, I’m sure.

Sotd is Imaginary Authors Dipped in Chocolate from the swapmeet, thanks hajusuuri!) This is the first time I’ve tried it and omgoodness it’s gorgeous, dark cocoa and floral incense. Yes incense, even though it’s not in the notes. Anyone else? Really enjoying this!

We watched the Sister Boniface Christmas special, which was charming. And the night before, we watched the Gavin & Stacey finale, which we missed on Christmas night (when it aired on BBC Northern Ireland, which is available in the Republic) because we were shifting stuff around to hit the checked bag weight limit. It was perfect.

Today (Jan. 1), we will probably watch the Kneecap movie together (on Netflix). We each watched it, slightly out of sync, on the Dublin- Dulles flight — it’s a surprising choice for an in-flight movie because it is very much a R-rated film and this was NOT an in-flight edit, at least not until we crossed into U.S. airspace. I made sure there were no children in eyeshot (?) of my screen, but later noticed that about 2/3 of the other screens around me were playing the same movie — including the screens of the children’s parents. ANYWAY — take that as gentle caveat about content (drugs, sex, language, violence); it is a FANTASTIC film and we were excited to finally see it, having been hearing so much about both the band (Kneecap) and the film over the past year.

Sunshine has been cranked up to 10 again today for which I’m heartily thankful because the breeze is chilly!

Saw a little blurb about some ancient remains found hereabouts that dated back 10,000! Human remains..! When I get a real signal I’m going to have research that. My camp spot has a big boulder at the entrance with a placard that says it’s from a nearby lava field and dates back 47-53 million years ago. My brain doesn’t compute..!

Wearing SL Cuir Mauresque today from the gangly, tippy black bottle.

Happy New Year to all! If you’re out on the road, stay vigilant and be careful. There’s only one couple anywhere near me and we all plan on a nice peaceful night! I hope 2025 sees peace rolling across the world with all the power of a vast tidal wave. 🕊️

I was doing themes all month and I’m ending the year in chypres, my favourite category, so on this last day of the year — honestly, how is that even possible? — I’m wearing THE chypre, Guerlain Mitsouko. Seems like a good way to tie a ribbon around a year. Still haven’t decided what I should see the new year in with. It’ll come to me.

Today it is 8°C out, and again, how is that even possible in eastern Canada at the end of December? So we went out for a walk, ran a few last-minute errands (we now have Shingrix and Prevnar vaccines scheduled for Friday, might as well get them both over with at the same time), got some New Year’s Day groceries (ribs!), and now I am not doing another blessed thing until it’s 2025.

Happy New Year! We had a very nice quiet evening with a few friends, ate too much and we’re in bed by 11pm. We’re not the party animals we once we’re. I wore Amouage Beloved, which always feels fabulously dressed up.
The weather last night was not great and is worse today, wet and cold. I would prefer to just stay home, but I left my phone at our friends’ place.
For .the CP, that shade of brown makes me think of soft spices, so I’ll wear Omnia today.

It’s probably more green than brown but I think of the color of Reminiscence Patchouli and am also guessing that many patchouli fragrances are paired with coffee, cocoa and chocolate*. I’ll so some research🤔

*Chocolate is not my favorite perfume note and I may end up swapping my bottle of Ummagumma for that reason.

I’ve sampled a few chocolate forward perfumes. Always in the drydown something starts to bother me. The exception being Prada Candy Night.

Rem Patchouli is an excellent pick for Friday’s CP! And going along those lines, maybe the OG Angel would be, too. Patch + chocolate + caramel.

RIP Jimmy Carter. I have a photo of my Father shaking hands with him when he was Governor, at a local business luncheon of some kind, and of course it was a receiving line, but it still looks cool. SotD for New Year’s Eve: SJP Stash. The waft is mostly from the body oil, which I topped it off with a few sprays of the edp. It is one of two or three perfumes that Mr. Mossy really likes. I think he likes me in vetiver (!) which I would never pick as a favorite note. But we do agree on wood notes, and patchouli and/or musk if well-tempered with something resinous. He frowns at my indolic favorites and most amber-florals; however, he knows what goes on down in the rabbit hole and understands a good fixation. 🙂 Happy New Year to all my NST buddies and a special fragrant waive to PL67 for health in 2025!

To go on, today’s teapot is beautiful, and I had red oolong to start my day today. Brown is probably my favorite color and it works really well with my coloring, though for clothes I look best in a shade or two darker than Mocha Mousse. In the 1980’s I splurged on a brown suit with a peplum waist. It made me feel confident and was just classic enough that I got years of wear out of it. I think a scarf was involved.

Happy New Year’s Eve NST friends. Just started in the kitchen, hors d’œuvre will be avocados and olives, both from the Turkish deli. Today I wore Chloe Rose Naturelle Intense recently acquired and tonight it’s Miss Dior Chérie 1st 2005 version from a brand new bottle, the end of my partial bottle has turned I discovered, so after some hesitation as my favorite MDC is the second version which is a chypre, I located a well priced bottle of the first version and I must say it smells great tonight, fruity and fun, a real little party number.

On this last day of the year, I’m wearing the first fragrance I ever wore: Devin Country Cologne by Aramis. (10th grade dance, first time wearing cologne, feeling like a grown-up.)

Before spraying the cologne, I began with the aftershave. I never use aftershave – why would I put alcohol on my face after razor blades have roughed it up? Today, however, I braved the sting. Full throttle Devin to end the year.

It’s a beautiful chypre – woods, leather, citrus, lavender, oak moss, pine, carnation. I know it’s still available; the latest reformulation hasn’t totally ruined it, but it’s lacking in oomph and depth. Thank goodness for my enormous supply of the vintage stuff.

I suppose Devin is now an “old-school masculine,” in keeping with my theme this week. (Which would mean that I, too, am old-school. Yikes.) But it doesn’t feel old to me – just full of warm nostalgia. In all these decades, I never once smelled it on anyone else, so I have an (unearned) pride of ownership when I wear it. For just a moment, tenth grade Daniel, slow dancing with his date, lives on.😊

    Happy New Year, everyone!

I’m wearing ELDO Story of Your Life again. Mmm. Since it has benzoin, bread, rum, and cocoa, one might suppose it goes with that color. I guess I resist the association because in my eyes that color should be not Mocha but Babypoop Mousse. Sorry if I’m raining on anyone’s parade! Oops!

This evening I’ll be joining a group of a dozen or so oddly-assorted friends going out for a big Vietnamese dinner and then back to the hosts’ house for drinks and desserts, which were quite lavish last year when I did the same. Plus, they have three nice cats, and I will get to pet at least two of them (the third one does a disappearing act).

It’s not as warm as the high of 81 yesterday but it’s still 68 and sunny, and the cats are out on the porch snoozing in the sunshine. We have predictions of a big Arctic front coming through next week. I wouldn’t mind a chance to wear some of my nice sweaters for a bit, just as long as we don’t lose power so that we have no heat or hot water at all, as happened in Feb. 2021. That was horrendous.

I’m reading the new biography of George Eliot by philosopher Clare Carlisle, and it’s so good. It’s well written and does a beautiful job of blending together treatment of her personal life, social opinion writing, and love life/partnership with George Lewes, which was scandalous at the time. If you like her novels I strongly recommend this. The title is The Marriage Question: George Eliot’s Double Life.

I am into the 2025 Pantone color. I love a chocolate everything. And mousse sounds so good right now.

Wearing a lot of the same 3 frangrances throughout the colder days of the year right now. It’s Lolita Lempicka, Trish McEvoy n9 Blackberry & Vanilla Musk, or Akro Bake all day every day. Today is LL. Yesterday was Bake. I spend the whole day with the bottle nearby and refresh every couple hours. Wfh smells so good.

When I am in the office there’s a no fragrance policy, which was implemented years ago after a temp went out for smoke breaks and then doused herself in something potent on her return (I am pretty sure something from the drugstore, maybe a dupe of Flowerbomb) – and the combo of cheap perfume and cigarettes was rough.

So now when i am in the office i do one spray of either Narcisco Rodriquez Pure Musc or SJP Lovely. Both nice. But not spray-all-day nice.

Happy New Year’s Eve, NST! 🎉✨ Teflon kitty and I are planning on a quiet night. I made carnitas earlier today, and have plenty of leftovers for at least a couple of meals. Looking forward to pulled pork sandwiches! Maybe I will have a gin and tonic later on, since I don’t have any bubbly. Tomorrow I go over to my brother’s house for New Year’s Day.

Not a fan of Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2025. I have nothing against brown; in fact, one of my favorite sweater is brown chenille. But it’s much darker and richer in color.

SOTD = Prada Candy, again. I decided that for the last day of 2024, I would wear a perfume that I purchased a full bottle of this year. Had plenty of choices! 🤣

    SOTD is Interlude Woman.

My sister and parents have been staying with me, and keeping me busy. I just realized I completely forgot to use my Diptyque sapin room spray this year! We’ve mostly just been hanging out, eating too much, and enjoying one another’s company. It’s been really nice, but I already feel the sort of Sunday night blues and dread of going back to work on the 6th.

Having a quiet night in after getting back from a walk in the park a little bit ago. We’ll watch some movies, eat chili and then brownies for dessert, and I’ll probably be asleep before midnight. Today was a work day for me though I took off early at 2.
