Lazy 3-day weekend poll ~ open thread, mid-September 2024

Posted by Robin on 14 September 2024 178 Comments

Our next swapmeet will start on Saturday, 21 September, and autumn officially arrives in the Northern Hemisphere the next day.

Meanwhile, we're frittering away the end of summer with our same old open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance that's getting heavy use in your rotation lately, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Happy weekend NSTers! It’s another lovely morning in the hood with temps varying from high 30’s overnight to mid 60’s today. Oh, and of course the kajillion watt sunshine is blasting down on us all. 🌞

Wearing Kalemat today, one of my favorite cooler weather scents. It’s a room decorated in jewel tones, satin curtains gently swaying in a light breeze, I’m draped in silks and reclining on a crushed velvet chaise longue while a few candles flicker, imparting a bit of honey to warm the amber air, flowers scattered here and there in gold vases on intricately carved wooden chiffoniers and side tables. Your man walks by puffing thoughtfully on his fragrant pipe wearing satin slippers that swish, swish, swish when he walks on the wooden floor embellished is complex marquetry. It’s dim, most likely the golden hour before sunset with a few dust motes dancing in the stray beam of sun that infiltrates the curtains. It’s quiet, the only sound heard is the soft hum of the earth turning on its axis.

Alas, I’m sitting in a camper in a flannel shirt and headed outside to pick up my dogs 💩. But I smell AH-mazing!

A lovely day, brisk and breezy and scattered with clouds, 18°C, perfect for a nice long walk, which we just got back from. (We’re getting a bizarre reprise of summer on Monday and Tuesday, 28° both days and probably humid as heck, if the entire summer that just passed us was any indication.)

I’m in Mugler A*Men Pure Malt, probably one of the best flankers in the entire line. (I’m qualifying it because I haven’t smelled every single one, but it is such a good variation on a theme.)

This week we had a drastic weather change, from almost 30 degrees to 11 on Thursday. Autumn has arrived with a bang and heavy rain.

It’s back to the low 80’s here for the next few days, and I’m keeping cool in 10 CC (10 Corso Como.)
And I just played “I’m Not in Love” to banish the earworm of “Rubber Bullets,” which I always hated. So, for your weekend listening pleasure, here’s the better song:

After two straight months, I turned my a/c off today.
Donatalla, please forgive me – I ordered a travel size of the new OJ Kashmir.

Post shower, I think something fall-ish from le labo. Or maybe Arquiste 57. Decisions, decisions.

I have this lovely Hinoki body cream from le labo and I want a scent to layer with it. Any recommendations?

Finished listening to Dr. Faucis’ book. I had to take breaks as he sounds so much like my dad with his NY/Brooklyn accent and his life experiences growing up.

Must read my Medicare and you 2025 handbook today. Oye ve.

I think hinoki smells great with florals, like ylang or jasmine…I sometimes add a drop to my diy lotion with ylang and sweet orange.

I hadn’t heard of LL Hinoki so looked it up and apparently there’s no perfume, just lotions and gels? Hmm, seems like it would make a great perfume too. I shall wait patiently.

I been waiting for a good while. I did spray Kyoto.
I have not tried CdG Hinoki or Sugi, one of those might work.
JM Hinoki and Cedarwood had no lasting power at all.

    Cartier La Panthère Légère
(thanks to a generous NSTer who gifted me a decant awhile back)

Farmers market this morning, got flowers and some amazing produce.

Did some shopping damage at Tj maxx. Do I need another fall dress? Another sweater? lol

Met some girlfriends for coffee and now getting ready to do to my favorite used bookstore…

I have a small travel bottle and I do like it. It’s a pretty, spring green floral, and it does well in the heat. As a critic once described Pride and Prejudice, it’s “light, bright and sparkling.” If you you find a good price, I’d say go for it.

I sniffed it when it first launched but I don’t remember it too much other than that it is a clean, light and fresh floral.
My mum loves it a lot and she got a bottle.
For reference, she loves Lancome Miracle, JM Red Roses and Sisley Izia.

It’s good, thanks for asking! This was my last visit with an alternative hair person while my usual person is finishing maternity leave, and the best thing about the alternate has been that he is really knowledgeable about products and what works best for which hair types. I’m trying a new shampoo/conditioner combo on his recommendation and so far I love it.

I had a very uneventful flight yesterday, and am very much enjoying my visit with my mother. I’m taking her to church this morning, I’ve done that a few times when I’ve been down, there’s still a few people I remember from over 40 years ago! She’s keen to go this week because the service is followed by lunch.
I’ll wear Diorling, which is seems suitably dignified for all occasions 🙂 .

Nothing beats a fresh spinach salad! I was surprised to learn, however, that spinach gains in nutritional value when cooked. Which gets me thinking of those ‘bricks’ of steamed spinach with shaved bonito flakes you can get in some Japanese restaurants. Clearly perfume is not the only thing on my mind this morning.

After watching some home cleaning videos, I caved and bought some scrub daddy products. I used them today on my tub/shower. I’ve been had! Lol. For the price I was expecting what the videos showed. They didn’t work any better than my usual less expensive products.

SOTD (yesterday) = Christian Dior Dune

SOTD (today) = Jo Loves Black Cashmeran & Tonka

I don’t know where the time went yesterday?!? I wore Christian Dior Dune and while I did not buy it new, it’s probably one of my oldest perfumes and is super-fine!

    https://www.instagram.com/p/C_3NRJkR863/?igsh=MWl0c3c1ZnRtbzFleg==

Of course despite being on a low buy, I ended up buying the new Jo Loves Black Cashmeran & Tonka. The initial spray was bitter and then quite quickly, the warmth of tonka came about. The bottle is as lovely as I thought!

After 6 years of eyeing the foldable phone from Samsung (mainly because I feel like the folding technology is still not mature enough), I finally caved and got the new Z Fold 6. The cover screen is a tad small but boy, the inner screen is FANTASTIC! The screen is so big, it makes browsing websites, reading my NYTimes and looking at photos becomes so much more enjoyable. I recommend!
Tangent – “It’s so much bigger on the inside!” Reminds me of Doctor Who. I used to watch it but it’s been a long while. Maybe I should catch up.

I am supposedly wearing a sample of Fugazzi Angel Dust but what I smell doesn’t match the description at all, at least not my perception. Notes are cashmeran, Calabrian bergamot, pepper, dark wood, white amber. All I get is a woody scent, not bad but nothing what I expected. The sample is from an outfit that clearly fills all these vials themselves with handwriting on labels so I wonder if it is even the correct perfume.

I have a whole mess of samples I am trying, thinking ahead to 2025 purchases. I have a selection of rose perfume samples coming but even though I am trying to branch out into florals, I keep circling back to musks, woods and vanillas.

I worked too late in evening last week to post in the community project but would have worn Narciso Rodriguez for Her EDT. My oldest bottle in spirit would probabably be SJP Lovely which I bought in 2005 but I am on my second bottle of that

I am going to look that one up. Many roses are mixed with amber or patchouli and I have Stella – which I consider an amber rose – but am looking for a musky or fruity rose. I got a good effect with layering Solinotes Rose with Henry Rose Sheep’s Clothing but both of those were fast to fade out. Delina is quite good and I might circle back to that one. It is fun to do the sampling.

Sunday funday…not really cause I’m working but it has been so sloooow I find myself hiding biscuits all over the office building and waiting for T-Rex to find them. Needless to say, she thinks this is an exceptionally fun game. Another stunner of a day her though not quite as cool. I’m wearing Shalimar MT because it’s an absolute delight.

The other night I was in bed, just about to fall asleep and heard what sounded like a very large owl hoot-hoot-hooting for about an hour. Then came a very strange, kind of grunting noise, sounded like an animal in pain to me. Definitely not a domesticated animal. Anyway, I did a bit of research this morning regarding animals in this area and their vocalizations. I’ve narrowed it down to a Black Footed Ferret, the most endangered species in North America. They prey extensively on the white tailed Prairie dogs and I’m *thinking* that’s what I heard. The ferrets have a whole repertoire of vocalizations but one is almost exactly like I heard the other night. Call me a dork, I don’t care. It warms the cockles of my bitter little heart to know I may have been within very close range of an animal like that!

Wow, that’s good research there. Kind of sad but that”s the way of the wild. I hear hoot owls fairly often here in Houston, right in the urban area, and enjoy that.

I *think* it was. I never would have imagined THAT sound coming out of a little ferret, but in the vocalizations I heard it was spot on, but who knows? One of my co-workes was walking back from the office in the dark when it started and she told me it scared the crap out of her!

We hear a lot of owls in our hood at dusk and once in a blue moon we even see one. They are so eerie and majestic. I especially like it when they talk to each other and get a duet going. I dunno why the Ancient Greeks or perhaps the Romans thought they were harbingers of death. They are fairly ubiquitous where there are tall trees, right? But I guess death was more common back then too.

Really? I thought they were associated with Athena and wisdom, but I could be wrong? That’s where I figured the saying “wise old owl” came from. Had no clue they were harbingers of death…☠️

I was away a few days late last week so I missed my own cp! Yesterday I wore one of my oldest bottles, Ferentina by Caesars. I probably bought it in the early 90s.

It was so enjoyable to read about everyone’s scents. There was many I haven’t heard of and it was also a nice reminder of some I used to know years ago.

I didn’t know that it’s this exact brand I’ve bought before (but many brand names on Amazon are kinda nonsense), but I bought a small quantity that looks just like these about 5 years ago and think they hold up well. I also like that the bottle is protected in a case. And I’m now intrigued by the little decanting tool that comes with it.

I have seemingly been on a citrus kick recently and this morning was craving more and got out my tiny little micro-bottle of Patou Sublime, that bright yellow squash blossom shape that I always loved. I went through two bottles of it back in the mid-90s and would love to have one now. I don’t like to use up my mini but I did splash a lot on. That has brought me to the point of browsing eBay, too, trying to find something old and original that’s not too $$. We still have a week to go (at least) in the 90s and maybe that’s why I have citrus on the brain.

I am going to dig out the remains of my sample of it later on to see if I agree, but would be interested in your thoughts as well — you and I are nearly scent twins.

I love it. It will be the second vetiver-centric perfume in my collection. Got my eye on a travel spray of it and Feu Secret.

It’s definitely a lighter-weight vetiver, with plenty of pine and herbal notes. I can see people of many different ages wearing it. A very solid unisex scent.

Pears today. It was Lancôme Aromafit this morning, I like it even better than AdP Arancia di Capri for an orange scent, I had drained a bottle very fast when it was released and was so upset when I found it was discontinued and was so lucky to find it again second hand full bottle for £35 IIRC, tonight it’s L’Occitane Ambre et Santal which has a creamy Santalum album note, it’s written on the bottle, that one is long discontinued and on impulse I sprayed some Omnia, my 40ml bottle is almost empty, I have a bub purchased a long time ago, I’m going to have to look for it.

I had to get up early this morning to send something to someone in Europe and now my schedule is all out of sync, so I’m going to nap for awhile. I’ve got a Zoom later in the afternoon. For this in between sort of day I sprayed on Méchant Loup. I have the big bottle with the gold cap and it’s at least 20 years old, as I don’t wear it often. It’s quite a peculiar scent, and while I generally disregard gender coding in perfume, this always feels very masculine to me. I feel a bit risqué when I wear it and I sprayed on A LOT! I was enjoying the hazelnut but am now getting lots of licorice. In general I hate that note, but somehow it works here. I feel like I want to go out and eat some cute little red-headed boy. Heee heeee heeee!

Just a wee bit of information on the new flanker by Shalimar that is coming. I see Gypsymoth reported that it would be out September 25th. That’s not too far away. I listened today to a Frenchman do a review on it and he said in some places it was already out, but he had heard it wouldn’t be officially out until the end of October. Maybe that is in the stores, but not sure. I guess we just keep checking the website. He also mentioned how the tonka and vanilla flankers had sold fast, but that the iris was still available in some places as there were mixed reviews on it. I love it! It sounds like that may be the same for the jasmine. He said the jasmine was very fresh and light and would probably be best in the warmer months. It didn’t sound like he was interested. I still am though, and I know I am not alone.

On another note, I received my Hush Hush EdT today and have to say I did not like it. That is one I will put up on the swap. I should have known better as I do not have good with 4160 Tuesdays. Do any of the rest of you have certain perfume houses that just do not work? Oh, well. I am constantly learning.

Re: perfume houses that just do not work out. For me, it’s Zoologist and Clean. There are probably others, but those 2 came to mind immediately.

I didn’t have too many from Zoologist work either. Just as well. Some of them are kind of spendy for just 60 ml. I have seen Clean at Sephora, but never tried any. They always looked like there wasn’t much to them. Is that the case?

Each perfume from Clean that I have ever tried had some kind of stabby note in it. They’re painful!

That is such a great way to describe a note, “stabby”😊

Interesting. I have had some from each house I have liked and some I have not.

Aftelier and Bois 1920 were the ones that came to mind as I started through the alphabet.
