Wednesday scent of the day 9/11

Posted by Robin on 11 September 2024 122 Comments

It’s Hump Day and the September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Le Labo Vanille 44.

Reminder: on 9/13, wear the fragrance from the oldest bottle in your collection that you bought new (in other words, not counting any vintage fragrance purchases, etc). Suggested by Gail.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Sotd is Private Collection Legacy. A fresh, green, herb garden fantasy. Perfect for a stuffy hot day.
Bringing the doggo to the vet today for her monthly joint injection. It’s always a whole bag of mixed emotions for her because she LOVES riding in the car but definitely not much of a fan of the vet. I always tell her beforehand where we are going so she doesn’t feel ambushed but I still feel kinda sorry for her.

Today I’m in Todd Oldham, long gone but not forgotten, at least not by me. One of things I bought when it was launched (thirty years ago!) and have worn ever since.

That’s a fun one! I wonder if it’s changed in the bottle over the years. My bottle almost unctuous with scent.

Pretty sure my bottle at least hasn’t changed an iota. Just as good as it always was. I still wonder why it didn’t become a hit: even though it was launched a few years after the general taste shifted from warm to fresh, there was still a market for big oriental scents, and this one is really good.

    Hello everyone!

I’m dead tired as I just couldn’t sleep last night. My early class flew by luckily, and I came home to finish my coffee before my next class (in about an hour.) I’m on the move functionally from 8:30am-8:30pm today.

I’m in Amouage Beloved today, which I like for about an hour. The drydown isn’t very satisfying to me on skin, but it’s better on clothes. I might put it up for the swap, though I have such a hard time giving perfumes up!

    Have a great day all.

While tidying up I found a sample of PDM Greenley that I didn’t know I had, so it must have been a GWP. Its gorgeous! Green apple, mellow bergamot oil, dewy moss and very well balanced cedar, violet and musk. GWP is doing its job here because I likely wouldn’t have ordered this sample on my own, and now I very much want a full bottle (but not a PDM prices! Ack!).

Tea today is Fortnum & Mason Highgrove, which I am very happy to have back in my personal stash.

I’ve been traveling a lot during the past month for work and vacation. Now that I’m home (hopefully for a while), I have a lot of NST reading to catch up on.

Another CP candidate: Donna Karan Woman from the grey sculptural bottle. A fruity vetiver to my nose, it is one I don’t reach for often. I remember reading the reviews on The Nonblonde and right here, then a lemming was born.

Very not CP complaint in CSP Vanille Banane.

It’s close and a bit humid, not a stitch of breeze. Cleaned the interior of the truck and protected surfaces with some kind of gel like substance I found on Amazon that makes your interior sparkle. It DOES look quite nice but we’ll see how long it lasts. I could make another dog with all the dog hair I brushed/vacuumed out.

Only 10 more days until I’m footloose and fancy free again!

No points for me today unless I reach back to last night’s bedtime scent which was L’Artisan Coeur de Vetiver Sacre, one of three bottles purchased simultaneously in the very early days of my current perfume era (i.e. after falling down the rabbit hole). This morning I’m in Tam Dao edt, trying to vanquish the horrible headache that kept me up much of the night and is still hanging on through medication and caffeine (my usual no-fail remedies). I blame the extra large cocktail that Mr. G made for me last evening!

I did find it on frangrantica, but no actual release date. What concerns me about it is the musk. I am afraid that will take over the jasmine. It will be interesting to see what it smells like.

          Just found this on Fragrantica:

Shalimar Millésime Jasmin by Guerlain is a Oriental Floral fragrance for women. This is a new fragrance. Shalimar Millésime Jasmin was launched in 2024. The nose behind this fragrance is Delphine Jelk. Top notes are Green Notes and Bergamot; middle notes are Jasmine, Indian Jasmine and Italian Jasmine; base notes are Vanilla and Musk.

Fzotic Monserrat today. It’s been interesting looking through my perfume shelves. It seems that a good number of my collection was received through swaps (including today’s SOTD) and gifts and a few new, but mostly discounted, bottles. That’s actually a pretty wonderful thing and many thanks to both MUA and NST. I’m still thinking about my Friday CP fragrance.

Fresh strawberries, juice of a lemon and yogurt smoothie

So, this morning I pulled out my K de Krizia bought new when living in NYC, thirty plus years ago, the volume is declining but there is a bub waiting its turn. Tonight it’s vintage Miss Dior esprit de parfum which makes me wonder why I would ever try to find another leather and lotv scent.

I took a class on lotv with BdJ Victoria. The ingredient which was used in vintage lotv fragrances is banned nowadays, lilial and the industry has tried to replace it with other materials but it doesn’t smell the same and I’m not surprised you find newer perfumes with the note unpleasant.

I’m in SJP Lovely today. Looked up the original date (of 2005) on Basenotes. I know I bought this early on so my bottle may be close to 20 years old. The lavender isn’t too much for me in here, as I usually can’t wear that note if it’s too overpowering.

I’ll keep it on my tray so I can get more wear this season and head towards a possible thunk by year end.

I remember when we were kids, my sister had taken me to a booth featuring lavender (at our yearly fair). She somehow loved it and thought I would too. I recoiled when the buds were shoved up my nose. We can be total opposites with some scents!

I inadvertently got her back when I was sure she’d love carrot seed oil. I was quite shocked she recoiled at that, especially because she loves iris fragrances. I explained to her that it’s great in a lotion; she said “but there’d be more of the scent” like its a bad thing. 😂

I’m wearing one of my oldest bottles, Estée Lauder’s Intuition, which I wore regularly back in the early 1980s. It’s interesting to me that perfumes with a strong citrus note have always been in my collection, ever since early days of college when I bought myself a bottle of Germaine Monteil ?? at the local department store. The name will come to me, but it was in an orange bottle and had a strong tangerine opening. I’ve always gone for things with tangerine/orange/bergamot. Anyway, I still have two half-used bottles of this from back in the time when I was living in two places for awhile (it’s a long story that wound up with a divorce). So I don’t have the happiest memories of it but I also don’t have the heart to throw away a formerly favorite, now discontinued fragrance.

Honestly, it was the early 2000’s, not the 1980’s, and I have no idea how that slip got in there. My excuse is that two cats are vying for space on my lap alongside my laptop itself and the keyboard suffers occasional attacks and bumps.

Paris YSL from my oldest bottle of it. Which I probably bought in 2004 2005 of thereabouts. I’ve got several bottles now, once I realised it had been altered so much and was no longer the warm and cuddly big rose I remembered. So I bought older bottles of it off eBay, this bottle was bought new however, but smells like Paris should.

I wrote yesterday that Kingdom was my oldest bottle purchased new, but that I wouldn’t wear it to work. What I forgot at that moment was that I also have a limited edition from a year later, 2004, which doesn’t have the cumin.
    I’m wearing that today.

    SOTD = Fzotic Unsettled

Love how unsettling this one is! As I mentioned in my IG post, I just realized I have several bottles that have this old style label. Not vintage but let’s just say vintage labeling! Kudos to jalapeño for inspiring me to wear this today.

For a palate cleanser, I don’t follow his account but do occasionally see Max the precocious couturier in my Stories. Here’s an article on him:

Good to be home. Hope everyone has had an uneventful summer.

Lots of lotion and purchasing, but very difficult wearing perfume.

Lush is coming out with 12 new perfumes tomorrow. Some sound pretty interesting. Has that been discussed?

Love to all. Thought lots about y’all this summer.

SOTD was Ummagumma, after seeing it mentioned a lot in the last few days. But it’s definitely not CP-compliant as my bottle at home is one of my most recently purchased. It fit this morning, though, which was cool and rainy.

I’m realizing I’m far less tolerant of inferior cookware, hard water, and confusing ingredients than I was nine years ago. But some of that is that I now have to get dinner on the table while on meetings, so I just don’t have time to go down rabbit holes on how much 1 C. of various ingredients weighs, or to deal with dull knives. Also there are only so many bottles of water I can schlep up 82 stairs, so I think I will have to invest in a water filter. It’s weird living in someone else’s house.

Over the weekend I went through my records (old emails) to figure out some of my oldest new bottles. The thing is back when I really started to explore perfume more, I was making very little money. My first eBay purchase was an almost full bottle of Gucci EDP II, the pink juice. This was back in 2007. I was working in retail but we didn’t get a good employee discount on perfumes most of the time like we did on other things sold in the store. So I fell for this Gucci at work but had to go on eBay to buy it.

Most of the perfumes I acquired when I started wanting to smell everything and going down the rabbit hole from 2007-2009 or 2010 were purchased on eBay or gotten through MakeupAlley swaps. It’s been wild to look at the low, low prices you could buy so many cool perfumes for on eBay back in the day.

Today, however, I’m wearing a perfume that I momentously bought at full price in person at Nordstrom in 2008. Some may remember the buzz and adoration for a Laura Mercier perfume called Nuits Enchantees back at this time. I think I must have gone in and sniffed a tester, but I don’t remember for sure. I think I may have actually called them and bought it over the phone because it was one of the last bottles they had and then I went to pick it up? I was 25 years old and very excited and proud to have bought my own bottle for around $75 (I think $79). Smelling it today feels like a blast from the past. It’s such a rich, sophisticated gourmand that niche lovers today would go crazy for.

Yeah, it’s kinda sad seeing what perfumes go for now on sites like eBay.

Got Red Flag/Fire Weather Warnings here for the next couple of days. It’s been dry, dry, and dry, with humidity around 20 percent this afternoon.

Teflon kitty has a vet appointment tomorrow afternoon. She is definitely not acting like herself now. I suspect she might have an ear infection. Time to get that cleared up.

Carrying on with the total opposite of the CP, and trying my most recent perfume acquisitions.

SOTD = Fzotic Feu Secret EdP. Iris lovers should definitely try this one! As for me, well, I am liking it almost as much as I liked Vetiverissimo…

I’m hoping the vet will give her a shot instead of me attempting to pill Teflon. That has never worked out in the past.

        Feu Secret is gorgeous!
