Thursday scent of the day 8/1

Posted by Robin on 1 August 2024 108 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! Welcome to August, aka Peach Month and National Sandwich Month. Birthdays today: Herman Melville, Yves Saint Laurent, Jerry Garcia. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm taking silly name points for Diesel Loverdose Tattoo.

Reminder: 8/2 will be Silly Friday...wear a silly perfume, or a perfume with a silly name, or a perfume that comes in a silly bottle, or ? (Raise your hand if you are the person who suggested this!)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is a promotional box of Trix cereal from the 2015 #RealTrixRabbit contest.

I’m in Terre d’Hermès Eau Très Fraîche.

Does the “Très” (Very) in “Eau Très Fraîche” (Very Fresh Water) tip it into silly territory? Maybe a little.

There is a new Hermès feminine fragrance by Christine Nagel being launched: Barénia, named after their famed leather.

I’m wearing Des Clous Pour Une Pelure, which is silly because it is obviously a fall/winter fragrance (orange, cloves, nutmeg), rather than the hottest month in Texas fragrance.

I didn’t remember my rabbits until I was up and opened my email to see it was August 1.
I know lillyjo will remember this one:

I’m in Beauty Pie’s La Botanista 002 which is giving me a 1970s herbal essence vibe.

I’ve said before that I can’t remember where I put my keys etc but I can effortlessly sing the Gilligan’s Island and Beverly Hillbillies theme songs and recall all kinds of 70s commercials. Stupid brain.

Not a silly name, but it’s fun to say.

    Hello.
Sotd is Vetiver Tonka. Received a compliment today, so a perfume win!
Went to see the huge resting Buddha in Wat Pho (pronounced Po not Fuh like the Vietnamese noodle) The Buddha was majestic. There were murals everywhere. I wish I could understand what stories they told. Entranced would be a fitting description of what I felt.
    Oh, and, rabbit rabbit rabbit!

Completely forgot the rabbits. Got a sick dog right now. Yesterday night, Sydney started throwing up and wouldn’t eat her breakfast yesterday morning. Took her to the vet and found out she has 1 kidney and a kidney infection. So it’s antibiotics, bland diet, fluids and keeping her quiet for the next few weeks. In Chanel no 5 body products. Part of the reason is no 5 is comforting but it’s kind of silly because Chanel prices has gotten silly.

No silliness from me, I’m wearing Shalimar while I catch up on laundry etc. Days where I’m a domestic goddess are Shalimar days, with hajusuuri level sprays.
TCM has started it’s usual August feature “Summer Under the Stars”, featuring movies from a different star every day. Today it’s William Powell and I could happily watch his movies all day, if I could.

I’m not silly today wearing my beloved MDCI La Ravissante. The piquant pomegranate note feels nice in the summer, like a cold red drink out on the patio. I just came back from a week up in Michigan where I was quite busy: visiting my aunt, who has recently been diagnosed with vascular dementia (how sad); my sister-in-law, who’s still of course dealing with my brother’s death and the subsequent paperwork and financial issues (more sadness); and my high school class reunion–an unexpectedly fun and happy event because ALL of my old high school friends were there (except one who had been ill and died last year). The weather was gorgeous and I got my fill of fish, eating it for four different meals–yummy walleye and lake perch.

On the plane coming home I watched a very beautiful movie, Perfect Days, directed by Wim Wenders. I can’t recommend it enough and only wish I could see it on a big screen. It’s about an older man in Tokyo; he has a mysterious past and has chosen to spend his life in a kind of Zen mindset of having the exact same routine every day and doing the best he can do in his job as a public toilet cleaner. It’s slow but interesting, happy and sad, and quite beautiful.

I loved Perfect Days too. I know you quite like Asian crime series (TV) and I watched one last week called Tokyo Swindlers you might enjoy. It’s about a criminal group who pose as the legal owners of blocks of land in Tokyo and then “ sell” the land for millions, or billions of yen to developers. There is also a team of fraud unit cops investigating. It is interesting as you don’t quite know the motives of some of the gang members, who is good and who is evil. The later episodes are quite violent but not OLdboy level violence. I think it was in Netflix

I’m off today and at the mall with my daughter. I am re-testing Gabrielle L’eau. In a silly move, I also sprayed the Burberry Goddess Intense. Lavender + major ambroxan. I can’t wait to scrub it off. ( in my defense, I watched a glowing review on it and thought I was safe to spray on skin).

L’eau Ambre Extreme. Just adding the word “ extreme” on a perfume makes me laugh as it always puts me in mind of commercials for budget cleaning products…window clean extreme!! That kind of thing. Perfume extreme! 10x more powerful! I like a Jean Claude Ellena scent having that tacky association in my head, it seems subversive . I was in the botanic gardens yesterday and saw gentians and crocuses , some of the latter were a startling white which added brightness to the otherwise gravel-grey alpine garden. It was cold so I met my friend inside the glasshouse where it was around 20C compared to the 5C outside.

I saw your comment about Metallica the other day and didn’t have a chance to comment, but wanted to ask you if you’ve been watching any of their live videos on YouTube. They’ve been touring in Europe and have been releasing clips from most of the shows. When they played in Germany it was down-pouring! They just rocked on!🤘

It was really good, thank you Lillyjo, ah, Volupté has your name on it all over, so perfumey and fruity as always.

    Hello all,

My mom went in the hospital this morning, I think she is just fine & probably having side effects from an epidural injection she had earlier in the week…but I may or may not be back today!

Oh, that is stressful. Wishing you and your mom calm while you navigate this health emergency. And hope it proves to be minor.

I hope it was just the side effects and that matters have resolved themselves.

oof so sorry Robin. Thinking good thoughts for your Mom and also for you.
As to silly perfume names, perhaps ELDO has the most silly names of perfumes, (Secretions Magnifiques? anyone) in addition to the name of the brand: Etat Libre d’Orange. What??
I’m in Jousset Bakhoor, which is way too gourmandy and sweet for me: milky caramelly, buttery, vanillic overload. I feel my cholesterol spiking with every breath I take.
I’ll have to find a silly name perfume for tomorrow. It’s a great way to go through my shelves as well.
    Take care everyone!
