Thursday scent of the day 6/27

Posted by Robin on 27 June 2024 162 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy National Orange Blossom Day! It's also National PTSD Awareness Day and Canadian Multiculturalism Day. Birthdays: Paul Laurence Dunbar, Helen Keller, Norma Kamali, Vera Wang, Alice McDermott. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: more points, and smelling great, in Prosody London's Lissom Linden.

Reminder: 6/28 is Henry VIII's birthday, and we're off to England. Wear a perfume that is named for a place in England, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to England, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Penhaligon’s Blenheim Bouquet.

    – For England, Glannys?

    – No, for me.

(Well, for England i.e. the CP, too.)

Shalimar today, a small spritz of the original and a small of the tonka flanker.

I picked up The Fire Next Time, as homework for the library and to help me with the Baldwin exhibition.

A little Chanel foundation and a Sisley lippy blotted down to a stain

Watching a lot of the Euro cup and looking forward to the matches this weekend.

Ok the makeup is elegant-I love Sisley lipstick, too:). I am organizing my perfume stash and found about 7 bottles of Shalimar. Think my favourite is a leathery little EDC-the iris note is really pronounced. I’ll always love Shalimar.

I absolutely love Shalimar in the summer (in all its forms)! The Tonka flanker blooms so beautifully during this season.

I’ve also heard some buzz that they might be releasing another flanker this fall. Can’t wait to see what they come up with
Delphine Jelk is cranking out perfumes for the House of Guerlain like a fragrance-making machine! I can barely keep up with all the new scents. Anyone else feel this way?

Yes, they are doing another flanker. I had heard it was rose scented, but someone said the other day they had heard jasmine. I guess that means we will see in the next few months. I think they have been coming out in September.

I have heard they are releasing another L’Art & La Matière soon.

I am interested in all Shalimar and flankers. Even if it is Jasmine or Rose!

I like all of this but wish Mr Wasser would come back lol He is there..obviously, but Jelk has the perfumes popping out of her hands like an assembly line.

    Hello.
Sotd is TF White Suede. First sample that caught my eye so, yep.
My current range oven is dying (3 of the 5 hobs are 50% functional – and they are the most powerful ones) so I ordered a replacement. But due to the various reasons, the cargo ship is forced to make detours and circle around. I was told the range would arrive end of May, then end of this month (tomorrow to be exact). I went to the shop today to confirm and to make sure I called for an installation crew and disposing service, instead I was told the ship is still on the other side of the world and now the ETA has been pushed to end of July! UGH! Cooking has been super difficult and boiling water/soup takes eons. I can barely sautee or stir-fry anything.

Living without a stove is tough! Perhaps it might be worth it to buy a portable burner in the meantime. I just looked up induction models, since I’ve been interested in trying that. It strikes me that this would be safer, plus more efficient. It probably involves a learning curve, but you can use the pans you already have, as long as you test the bottom with a magnet and they stick. HTH!

Continuing with English theme for the CP I’m wearing two more today I have in the Jo Malone British Summer Fete collection bottles from a few years ago. But, it also turned out to be a theme of memories of berry picking as a kid. Right now I’m wearing Elderflower Cordial and this same fragrance was also called Elderflower & Gooseberry in their previous Sugar & Spice collection. I got it because it has a gooseberry note that takes me back to eating gooseberries from both my mother and grandmother’s gardens. The other for later today is
Blackberry & Bay which makes me recall going wild blackberry picking.

My childhood did not include berry picking (and I have managed to avoid it through adulthood too, despite my sister trying to drag me blueberry picking every summer). But all that sounds fun!

Thanks, AnnE! The Flambeau settled down really nicely – more warm and spicy, rather than sweet. Of course, I’ve never smelled the original so I don’t know how my (old, but not THAT old) bottle compares, or what shape it’s in, but it sure is fun to travel back in time via scent.😊

I’m wearing Jour d’Hermes this morning while I wait for a contractor to come and give me an estimate about replacing the patio cover. It’s more than thirty years old and starting to leak. I think I’ll honor Orange Blossom today with my scent today–later on after my shower. I’m having a lazy morning.

I don’t generally wear dresses any more, but they really are cooler in our awful summers. I’m very frustrated trying to find a nice sundress. Yesterday I actually went to a department store to look, but the dress styles now are terrible, with ruffles everywhere, tucks and tiers, and puffy sleeves–ugh–and everything is in polyester or rayon. Neither is viable in our hot climate. I want something simple, cotton or linen or a blend, with some short sleeves and mid length and NO RUFFLES. Anyone have any suggestions?

(PS: It’s a plus that they let you search on the material; other websites I’ve been looking at don’t have that option.)

I live in dresses in the summer. I have a condition that makes my blood pressure drop crazily in the heat, so I need to stay as cool as possible, and the most temperate dresses I’ve found all come from Saint James, the nautical French brand. Their stretchy dresses are synthetic fiber, but they are UV protective and light and so, so cooling. Their cotton dresses are fabulous, too. I’ve tried the billowy cottony dresses from US/French brands, but they are hot, too voluminous, and overpowering on my frame. Saint James isn’t cheap, but they last for years with active, active, hard wear.

I totally agree with you about the hideous clothes lately!!! 😖 jjill used to sell lots of natural-fabric clothing, but it’s getting harder to find there, too. Garnet Hill has decent stuff, if you don’t need special sizing. For me, though, since I need petites, my choices are extremely limited. I’ve bought myself a new sewing machine and will try to make as many as I can for myself.

My sister and sister in law love that one and I have gotten both of them bottles over the years, including a small one for myself, but it is getting harder to source now that it’s discontinued. Taking a break from England as it’s Matariki here – the Maori New Year when Matariki ( Pleiades) rises early in the morning. Henry 8 built up his naval fleet, and is associated with sea power, but Aotearoa/ NZ would not have featured on his map as he died about 100 years before the place was “discovered” by Europeans. A public holiday today, mid-winter new year. So, an English brand Penhaligon with a dark sky theme, Luna for a semi-CP

    Frozen mango and yogurt smoothie

I didn’t get around to commenting yesterday but was participating with two Penhaligon’s rose scent Hammam Bouquet one of their historical perfumes and Elisabethan Rose, vintage version, now on Fragrantica’s catalogue. Today I’m in Violetta, so fond of this discontinued one and tonight it’s Bal à Versailles parfum de toilette.

As Kanuka said, it’s Matariki here, and I’m very much looking forward to the long weekend. I had a lovely long weekend with my mother, but it’s great to have another at home to catch up with myself.
I am still wafting last night’s Salome, it’s the absolute opposite of everything I think of as English, but Liz Moores seems so very English.
When I go out later, I’ll mark Orange Blossom Day in L’Or de Louis.

Random recipe of the day, for those who partake of adult beverages…this is from “A Beautiful Mess” which I came upon randomly and thought was so cute. Then I learned that they are a juggernaut of the internet. Still cute, just makes the advertising seem a little disingenuous…anyway, here’s a recipe for:
Gin + Tonic Popsicles, makes 10 ice pops!!!!
    6 oz. gin
    1/2 cup fresh lime juice
    3 cups tonic water
    cucumber slices for garnish
    popsicle mold and sticks
    For those really hot days!

I am feeling very English today in my Sandalwood Cologne from Geo. F. Trumper and my English Rose body powder from Yardley. This is such a nice, old-fashioned, and very proper cologne. I like it a lot! I would never name it Sandalwood, since it has a lot of help from floral and vanilla notes, but I think the extra facets are what make it so polite and understated.

I’m off today and it is beautiful out. For my birthday last week, I received a gift card for evil bay from my work family. I’ve never bought anything from there before but have been browsing. I’ve narrowed my wish list down to.. 1. Angel Peony. 2. Gucci Accenti and 3. Krazy Krizia which would be a blind buy. Can anyone tell me is it too similar to Opium and Cinnabar?

In other news, more articles on alcohol consumption, this time, while flying. Perhaps it is just me but the method seems questionable to me; I am no scientist. Also, because I made this mistake once (and probably because I was upgraded to first class only once), do not even THINK of drinking champagne before a flight. I felt sorry for myself for a good long hour.

Leather Jardin was a great blind buy for me.

I won’t drink alcohol on an airplane for 3 reasons: It’s dehydrating. I get plenty parched as it is on a flight. Nearly all of what I see on planes lately is stuff I won’t touch. And the stuff I would drink is WAY too expensive!

So I agree with all your points; however, you only live once and pretty much if you can “afford” to fly, what’s an extra $x? I only said this because people who post questions and / or answers for cruise-related questions worry about whether or not they are getting a good deal when they get the Have It All package (usually 15 drinks per day, $50 or $100 credit for specialty dining, $100 excursion credit, free WiFi and sometimes crew appreciation which could be ~ $20 per day).

I usually fly budget airlines where you have to pay for *everything*. And the drink options are ridiculously overpriced for what they are.

There is a way to guesstimate how full an opaque perfume bottle is. Shake it. A higher pitched sound means less perfume.

Report on dress-shopping today: I did go to J Jill, as jepster suggested above, since I wanted to be able to try things on if I could to test the size and fit and length. And I got two 100% cotton dresses! They also had some other nice linen and cotton pants and tops. I was pleased. I can’t find a photo of one of them, which has a cute green and white print and is knee-length, but here is one I bought in the vivid cobalt blue color. Luckily it came in petite because I am short. It has good arm coverage and a good length and will look nice enough for when I am to give a conference presentation in Santa Fe in mid-July. I just have to figure out jewelry and sandals.

I’ve been terrible about commenting this week, but I’ve wearing British perfume brands the last few days. Today it’s the discounted La Pluie from when Lyn Harris was still the owner of Miller Harris. Yesterday it was ånd Fragrance Får, which I’d probably plan to buy a travel spray of if it wasn’t sold out at Indigo. And Tuesday it was Jo Malone Emerald Thyme, which is pleasant but not super interesting.

PSA: Soivohle’s website is back up, and Liz Zorn is clearing out her oil perfumes. They will not be restocked once they are gone. Also, some of the EdPs and Extraits are back up.

Time to give a shout out to lillyjo! Thanks for saving me from a smishing scam! I had a questionable text message on my phone early Tuesday morning. I wasn’t quite awake the first time I read it, and decided not to do anything about it until I could think. When I looked at it a second (and third) time, I realized it was the USPS scam that lillyjo had mentioned she got before Father’s Day.

So I didn’t click the link and marked the offending text as spam.

Looks like Zara’s website here in the US is not working properly. I decided I was going to get another of the Jo Malone x Zara perfumes after all. But the website won’t let me complete the order. Money saved, but in a super annoying manner. 😤🤬

The Zara website is iffy: the front desk person at our hotel in Iceland was gushing about Zara perfumes and she wrote down a few of her favorites. I looked them up and was gobsmacked with the huge number of perfumes but none of the ones that were part of the Leather Jardin series. I got tired of looking and will try again some other time.

I’m so sorry! Four of out our family of five got COVID in early-mid June, and it definitely started out feeling like a mild cold. I hadn’t even thought of testing for COVID until an acquaintance said something that triggered my thought that, Wait, this could be COVID. So I tested and of course it was. We’re all fully recovered now, though, thank goodness, and I hope you and yours recover quickly too!

I have to keep reminding myself not to overdo, though, as I still felt tired for a while. So I hope you can take it easy and take good care of yourself!

I’ve been wearing samples from my Penhaligon’s Portraits discovery set this week! It’s such an “English” concept. Thursday’s SOTD was The Coveted Duchess Rose, and Friday’s will be my favorite so far, The Revenge of Lady Blanche.

In other news, we finally got some rain! My garden and I are gasping in relief. I hope we get more in the coming week as forecast, since I’ll be out of town and I’ll have to rely on my daughter to do the watering.
