Tuesday scent of the day 6/18

Posted by Robin on 18 June 2024 118 Comments

It's Tuesday, plus Waterloo Day, International Sushi Day and Autistic Pride Day. Happy 82nd birthday to Paul McCartney! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in L’Artisan Parfumeur Histoire d’Orangers. Tea at the moment is Kusmi Anastasia.

Reminder: on 6/21, it's summer — the solstice is on Thursday. Celebrate the season with your bestest summer fragrance. If you're in the southern hemisphere, adjust accordingly.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Utopia Mr & Mrs Sun teapot ("A masculine sun on one side and its feminine counterpart on the other: our reversible Mr. and Mrs. Sun Teapot gets guests talking at the table") is on markdown, $60 at Jonathan Adler.

I love Histoires D’Oranger-it was a contender for the SOTD, but I chose FM Angeliques Sur La Pluie. I cut down a lot of trees and brush yesterday, and this morning I stuffed it all in the back of the truck. I take it to work and put it over the bank. If I waited for weekly compost it would take forever to clear it all. My SOTD matches all the green scratchy stuff I dealt with 🙂

I’m looking for an orange blossom fragrance but the Ambroxan in HdO makes me nervous. It didn’t seem to bother my in a sample I smelled but I wondering what your impressions, and others who own it think about it.

And I’d love to hear other Orange Blossom suggestions. Sounds like there’s a new OB fragrance coming from Hiram Green…

Wearing Lush Avocado Co-Wash Body Spray. Despite its name, it does not smell like avocado – it’s a sweet citrus scent. It smells very appetizing – like a citrus dessert.

I was the grateful recipient of a massive cool down last night! The wind kicked up and dropped temps down to the 40’s as a front passed through. High of 59 today and I’m not mad! Starting tomorrow the heat creeps back up, sadly.

I’m wearing Ummagumma in celebration of this brief and probably final cool down of the season. Woot woot! 😎

    SOTD = Chanel No.5 L’Eau

… from the Red bottle. The egg juice is definitely different, and both are wonderful. The Red juice is less powdery and has a sharper edge. I wonder if age has something to do with it 🤷🏻‍♀️? I will have a picture up later.

Right now, I am waiting for my car to be serviced. How is one to know that a brake light is out unless you are looking for it and have someone else checking for you? The answer: you don’t. A kindly driver made the motion of rolling down my window and told me. I should have known to bring cash because the last time I was here, there was an upcharge of 3% if you use a credit card. Even with replacing the 2nd bulb (I am very suggestible), I may just make it as long as I clean out my ⛽️ money that I keep in the car.

I went to Costco yesterday and now have eggs with which to hard-boil experiment. Not the eggs but for some of the staples, sticker shock again! I thought supply chain woes were all resolved but I suppose not!

I just read an article in my newspaper that the IRS is ending a major loophole that allows insane-wealthy individuals and companies to avoid paying taxes on their wealth. If it’s true, we (little people) may not immediately see the effects of it, but it is a positive step in the right direction.

    Tea- Vanille des Îles

Went to Kosars bagel shop earlier and put my bag on a bench. Some kids from the French school next door came over and stepped on it. Smooshing the bagels and tipping my kids OJ over. When I confronted them, they claimed that the bag was already like that when they got there. It was so frustrating! I left for a second to watch my son show me his pickle ball serve only to have our $40 breakfast smooshed by some

If you were of a mind to try things from CdG, the Incense series is probably the best place to start. Unfortunately, I don’t have any more samples of them, or else I’d send them your way.

Robin really liked the CdG x Monocle series.

Others that you might like would be CdG Grace, which comes in the cutest cat bottle ever.

I’m wearing Impossible Iris. The tree guys came yesterday and removed a big broken limb from the front yard tree and two little, annoying trees from the back yard. The back yard trees were overhanging the roof, and the squirrels, raccoons, and other wildlife used the branches as a bridge. There were thumps overhead all the time and I am hoping that will end now. The back yard looks bigger and brighter, too.

Was it expensive? Some friends of mine need to get a very large water oak tree in their back yard taken down. It’s been losing branches and is diseased, and it’s best to do this before we (might) get a hurricane. But it’s $9,000! I was shocked. My friend said he thought it was high too, but the tree cutting services have so much business now after our recent storms that they can just jack up their prices. Ugh.

Plus very large trees close to houses require all sorts of extra prep- if the is no room to let it go down and not hit anything, they have to go up the tree and take off branches until it is small enough to let fall in the available space…

Tree removal prices here (at the places I have used) calculate cost partially on the diameter of the trunk. If they need to use heavy equipment or have the electric company cut current to a pole, that costs more. To have the big limb removed from my maple was $400, and they quoted $1200 for a “regular” pruning. The two trees in the back yard were small, 6″ in diameter, and cost $250 each. I don’t think 9k is out of line for a big tree.

We have a pending quote for $4,000 to remove a large oak that overhangs our house, with stump removal cost TBD, but less than $1,000. I thought that was very reasonable. Your friends should look around.

With official summertime coming on, and summery weather officially solidly here, I’ve updated my fragrances-at-the-ready that I rotate out of the perfume cabinet to the tray in my bathroom. So, now I have Le Chevrefeuille, Thé Pour Une Eté, Terracotta, Lys Mediterranee, Neroli Portofino, and Bronze Goddess ready to rock. Not sure what I’ll go with today, though — we’ve been in heavy smoke from the Point Fire and my nose and throat are kind of fried from that, plus I slept poorly last night, and perfume is sounding like too much.

Yesterday I got my new FB of Arquiste Flor y Canto in the afternoon mail and so today, you know what I am wearing! It is fun to have a big bottle and to spray with abandon. What a beautiful scent and definitely good for summer: it’s pretty and floral and potent yet somehow feels light.

We’ve got a prediction of thunderstorms and flooding starting tonight and lasting into tomorrow morning, but at least it’s less dire than the forecast was initially, because the storm in the Gulf is heading south of us. I am planning to take my good friend out for dinner for her birthday this evening but we’re keeping an eye on the weather before we decide for sure. This is a tradition that I think we’ve now had for 14 years–a long time! Hope it works out.

We’re heading to a high of 9 degrees today, with a biting wind. It’s a bit dismal at the moment, grey and soggy ( and that’s just me!) So, need something sweet and happy, like Rahat Loukhoum. The lack of colour in the winter neighbourhood was broken yesterday by a beautiful burst of violet, from flowering heather. I remember that gardens in Bavaria often included heather, and I can see why…just a flash of colour in mid-winter can create a bit of joy.

My cats are 14, and one of them is becoming a lap cat. He insists on sitting on my lap when i work, after 13 years of a solidly standoffish preference. He is so sweet, and it is adorable to have him on me. The one downside is he loves to manically lick my hands and arms if they get near his face. It’s like water torture. We’ve come to a truce where i let him go for it once in awhile. But not today!

Isn’t it just! I am glad he is opening up to it. Our other guy is a lap fanatic since kittenhood, thank goodness. I don’t know what I would do otherwise!

So grateful my years on this planet have coincided with the collective existence of John, Paul, George, and Ringo. Happy Birthday to Paul. What a genius. What a life.

Off to a portrait session – going big and bold in Coco Parfum.

      Daniel-

I was looking at your portraits you have done and they are excellent! I take it you probably do a lot of actors out in California. You do wonderful work with flowers as well.

Going to watch the Cup Final, guessing FL wins it all..but we sure beat them in the Final last year lol. I won’t watch the presentation of the Cup though I don’t think, should still be in Vegas imo haha.

    Have a wonderful day! 🌹

Embruns d’Ylang popped into my head this morning, and I think I might get a few points, at least for the sun king image on the bottle’s name plate. 🙂 Someone on Fragrantica compared it to Cameleon, and I can see that. But EdY is sweeter, and Cameleon is muskier. I like both, but Guerlain wins the day.

I ended up in La Chasse aux Papillons today. I saw my collection of rollerballs sitting there, so decided they needed some attention. This one is nearly thunkable; maybe a few wears left.

I jumped on the No. 5 L’eau train for my SOTD since everyone’s been chatting about the new drop bottle. I just have a sample of L’eau and admit to not being wowed by it the first time I tried it. I do like it better today! I still wouldn’t say I’m wowed, but I think I was already having sinus issues the day I first tried it. It’s a nice, easy-going, no brainer kind of perfume.

I think I tried L’eau several times before I loved it. The first couple of times I remember not being able to smell it for very long.

It’s not super long lasting, for sure. I did reapply in the middle of the day and now seems I’m about ready for another round of sprays.

They’re doing fine today and generally do a lot better in summer and warmer weather. It’s just a chronic problem for me though and exacerbated through perfume sniffing surely. Thanks for asking. 🙂

Like Deva, I was also the recipient of a cooling trend. I was actually able to turn off the A/C today and just have the screen door to the deck open. 72 degrees and sunny, anyone?

Unfortunately it is not a good idea for me to go out onto the deck right now. I discovered a wasps nest near it over the weekend. So yesterday I went to the office to inform them about it. They said that pest control shows up on Tuesdays and that they would put a work order in. I am still waiting. Maybe I will take things into my own hands. Home Depot is ridiculously close by…

SOTD = back in Golden Goddess. I also thunked my Verbena Cream lotion yesterday.

A big no to going outside with a wasp nest. I hope they take care of it.

I had a few four-letter words to say when I spotted that nest. Not a fan.

Gosh I hate spraying wasp nests. They keep building them right on my porch by the front door, and then they built one under the coffee table on my front porch…I don’t like to kill them but they need to find a better place!

      Anyway good luck.

        Thanks Robin.

My brother has had an ongoing feud with wasps that build in or near his storage shed. They also like trying to nest in the wing mirrors of his Silverado. He’s taken to using used Bounce dryer sheets as wasp repellent. Apparently the local letter carriers for the USPS use them.
