Wednesday scent of the day 5/1

Posted by Robin on 1 May 2024 227 Comments

Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit and happy May Day! Birthdays: Calamity Jane, Sterling Allen Brown, Joseph Heller, Terry Southern, Shirley Horn, Judy Collins, Wes Anderson. RIP Paul Auster. What fragrance are you wearing?

I have a little vase of lily of the valley on my desk, plus I'm wearing vintage Diorissimo, because May Day.

Reminder: 5/3 will be Chypre Friday! Wear a chypre fragrance of any sort — classic or modern or post-modern. This is a repeat from 2016.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Blossom Jasmine Bunny ("Who is this lilac lovely? Blossom Jasmine Bunny is such a funny lass. She’s clearly been rolling in the lavender patch! Her pretty ears are so colourful, and flopsy and soft as a jasmine petal") is out of stock in the size shown, but you can get the small version for $18 at Jellycat.

Sadly I’m no longer a proud owner of mini bottle of 80s Diorissimo, so I’m wearing Chanel Beige and desperately trying to discover its lily of the valley notes (I remember in old Grain de Musc spring list Denyse wrote that Beige has unlisted muguet note). Happy May Day!

    Hello and rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!
Comète had launched in my local Chanel today and I ran out to test it. Here are my thoughts:

It’s undeniably Spring. The air is crisp, sky pale blue with fluffy white clouds, the Sun bright but gentle. You pass by a French pastry shop, glass cases filled with dainty, artisanal petit fours and confections. Everything precious, tempting and calling out to you. But what to choose? Well, you can never go wrong with a macaron.
From the rows of the perfectly round cookies, one catches your eye. “Comète. It’s our newest creation.” Pastel pink and baby lavender, skilfully swirled to create elegant, marbled shells. Sandwiched between is the filling, a darker shade of violet. “Perfect.” You whispered to yourself. “One please. Thank you.”
Stepping out onto the street, you take a small bite with anticipation. First to appear is the fragrance of almonds, inviting you to discover what is within. As you inhale deeper, a gentle dance of florals joins in, composing mainly of heliotrope and a petal or two of cherry blossom. This combination gives an effect that is almost creamy. Finally, the filling. Immediately identifiable as iris, it is powdery, velvety and slightly earthy. Deftly crafted to balance with the rest of the composition and never overpowering. All this rests upon a bed of translucent, fluffy white musk. Elegant, easy to love and never cloying, this is enjoyable to the last morsel.

There is minimal change throughout. Like a photo that captures the flowers at their peak blossom, the beauty is unchanging. It is exactly what Spring calls for: a light and joyful floral gourmand that is a delicate pastry rather than a full-on dessert. It easily suits most occasions, dressed up or dressed down, it’s your call. Like the stardust that it’s based upon, anyone that encounters its trail will surely stop and admire, at least for a little while.

Dang it, I forgot to rabbit. Hopefully one of you will have extras to share.

After enjoying Azemour les Oranges all day yesterday and sampling MDCI Chypre Palatin at bedtime last night, I checked fragrantica’s list of chypres and found OJ Woman on there, so that’s my SOTD. The list also contained Diorling, which I adore and had forgotten is in this week’s category, so I’ll hunt out my tiny decant of that for tomorrow. Happy Wednesday!

I did make an effort today, a poor effort, but an effort nonetheless, and went on Fragrantica as well but only made it to the C’s before I gave up and just sprayed what I wanted. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Rabbit x 3 and happy May Day! My bottle of Guerlain Muguet is in transit and not accessible so I’m in SL Santal Majuscule. Going out to Holt Renfrew to sniff Comète with a fellow perfumista today. My expectations are low given the reviews, but it should be a fun outing nonetheless. At least it’s not pouring rain today like yesterday.

I did remember my rabbits this morning!

    SOTD is Marc Jacobs Daisy.

I would like to pose my question again regarding Zara Leather Jardin. I see on Fragrantica that it is compared to Aramis. My father wore Aramis, and I loved it, but found it very masculine. Does this really smell like that? I know many of you say you plan to purchase it and before someone gets an enabler pin from me, I wanted a little more information. TIA.

Kris, I am sorry but I don’t have a comparison with Aramis. I can however say that it smells simply unisex, not masculin at all. If you have smelled Sisley Eau du Soir or EL Knowing, it is very reminiscent of them. Hope this helps!

Fashionably London was my favorite of the City line. To my nose it is more citrusy than Delina (more tart, less sweet) but definitely in the same ballpark

Because someone wore Ysatis yesterday, I was reminded that I have a ’90s bottle at the very back of my box of full bottles. I never realized that it is a chypre. I sprayed it twice only, because I remembered how strong it is. With newer fragrances I tend to spray arms, neck and chest, but there was no way I would do that with Ysatis.

I am wearing a lily of the valley fragrance for May Day. It is Muguet Porcelaine created by perfumer Jean-Claude Ellena for the Hermes Hermessence line. It is my favorite lily of the valley, even over Diorissimo. But, I’ve only ever had a modern bottle of Diorissimo and I’m sure back in the 1950’s before perfume regulations it was the most beautiful thing ever, just like his dresses.

I watched The New Look on Apple TV+ the mini series about Christian Dior and Coco Chanel and I found the story lines referencing their perfumes interesting. It was very touching to learn why Miss Dior perfume got its name and the inspiration behind it.

I’m partial to Muguet Porcelaine over Diorissimo too. I couldn’t tell you why, though, and I’ve tried 80’s parfum, Cologne, and EdT.

(I found a houndstooth bottle of Diorissimo for a steal a million years ago and gave it to a special NSTer because I knew they’d appreciate every drop more than I do.)

What an adorably sad bunny. Makes you want to give it a nice big hug! 🐇

My sinuses have been a bit of an issue lately. I was going to wear Bottega Veneta today, but that can go just a bit sharp on me, so maybe tomorrow or Friday. Decided on FdD instead because it’s soft and cozy but still present. My bottle is half gone!

In other unimportant news, I was able to tour my campgrounds yesterday and get a look at my home for the next 5 months. It’s a sweet spot in a grove of mixed evergreen and deciduous trees, about 1/2 full sun 1/2 shade. It’s large with lots of room and privacy and at the back, a creek is running briskly. It’s a year round creek, so even in the summer it will still be tripping along. There’s plenty of room for the two trucks which will effectively block the view into my site by other campers. On the other side of the creek is a soaring wall of red, orange, and cream colored stone. It’s not on a through road so relatively little traffic goes by this campground. Absolutely no service in any of the campgrounds, and so I asked what their protocol is for campers who are experiencing a medical emergency..? Apparently, there is no protocol. I guess whoever they’re camping with will have to bundle them up in their car and tote the person somewhere…
As for me, it will be hard to go so long without wandering in the Realm of Damnation collecting demon hearts! Because I’m 13 and enjoy winding down by playing games, this will be a bit of a deprivation. And NST of course! That goes without saying. 😊

I bought a bunch of physical books in anticipation of long evenings. I have about 10 in a line up. I’m about an hour from the nearest sizable town which is in Wyoming. There’s a small town pretty close but they don’t really have anything except a small market for milk and such. I’m anticipating having to drive up into Wyoming every couple of weeks for propane, groceries, and dog food. I can get water and empty my tanks here at the large campground (about 20 minutes away from my campground) on an as needed basis. Plus, they have showers! 🛁

Have you considered getting a Nintendo Switch? They’re so perfectly portable and lots of games don’t need online connection. I’ve more than gotten my initial investment out of mine in sheer hours of entertainment.

But coumarin, what did we do before cell phones existed? We survived! I have thought of a Switch but got so overwhelmed by game choices, I gave up, just like Ayn Rand’s sister. She visited from Russia and was so boggled about supermarket choices it supposedly gave her anxiety and she gladly returned to what was then the USSR…I may look into a switch again, though. Thanks for the suggestion. 😊

Yes, recommendation please! And I will say I’m not a big gamer. The only one I ever got into was Diablo. There’s a long story behind my love for it but I’ll spare you. I’ve never really played much of anything else, which is probably why I was so overwhelmed. Thanks for any and all recommendations and hugs and kisses to Jicky!

Speaking of gaming, the novel Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevlin, which is about 2 college kids who create a game in 1994 that goes big, is a wonderful story about love of all kinds. I’m not a gamer but my son (a gamer) recc’d it and I loved it.

Perle de Mousse – a chypre with lily of the valley, so it works for both the CP and May Day.

The ISP’s technician came in the morning, took our router and installed another one for testing. We will see whether internet is stable with this one.

Enjoying everyone’s Diorissimo – you all smell fabulous! I did make a May Day Lily of the Valley bouquet, but chose lilac in Tocadilly for my May Day flower. I am thinking over whether I can say I have a favorite chypre, and whether I can pick one in a non-vintage version that checks all the boxes. That is my challenge for Friday. 😀

Dang, forgot my rabbits because I woke up a little after midnight and realized my husband had not come to bed, so I HAD to go nag him to get to bed of course. 😛

I’m wearing Patchouli Patch today, it’s an old comforting favorite. I’m going through something slightly stressful at work and I’m feeling concerned about making any bad scent associations. I’m having to suddenly move from my office to a cubicle in another building. It’s very much first world problems, but I do get so attached to spaces and routines, and I’ve been in this building for almost 8 years.

It’s been a sad week as my beloved dog Sprocket died. He was 14. He was a once in a lifetime dog, had incredible emotional intelligence and was very complicated. Always at my side, day and night, and was a bit of a talker ( barking, or groaning contently, or nudging me for treats or action). Loathed other dogs, hated them. He was a NZ Heading Dog which is bred from a border collie but short hair, a good eye, for getting sheep in and keeping them under control. He was an immense comfort to me, very gentle. We used to go on amazing walks over the hills and he would always look back, or up at me as if wanting to make sure I loved it as much as him. I always did love it. He was magic. Anyway, just a big, silent hollow space now. I was wearing Shalimar when he died ( he went downhill very fast, probably kidney failure) and that perfume seems like a good tribute to an exceptional friend.

Oh no, Kanuka, I am so very sorry to hear about your sad loss of your beautiful dog. What an amazing creature he must have been. Despite being the devoted cat lover that I am, I truly believe it’s harder to lose a dog. They are more interactive and involved in your life, and besides, generally more likely to go places with you, giving more shared memories. I hope your grieving will be countered by some of the many good memories you have mentioned here.

Frozen mango, juice of a lemon and yogurt

I received my order of a new bag, £29, 80% off, it’s tan leather but surprised that it is much bigger than anticipated. It’s a tote and as I have no leather tote, I am pleased how it turned out.

I was in AdP Arancia di Capri from my new bottle but it’s been on my list for a long time and tonight for the CP AdP Profumo which is my favorite modern chypre, half the bottle is gone but I have a bub, now discontinued, I guess it didn’t sell too well, it was rather expensive for the time.

jalapeño’s post about reconnecting with a cousin reminded me of something I meant to post earlier. Every years, at least in the U.S., we have elections that matter more than any other intervening year. My family is huge, or perhaps I should say, YUGE, and therefore, it is inevitable that we would come out on either side of the political divide. We do try to self-regulate but I am seeing signs of that discipline fraying. Please pray for our sake that none of us takes it too “seriously” (I know it IS a serious matter).

I’m glad the swelling and pain have diminished. If you haven’t yet, you might think about getting an MRI to make sure there’s no tendon or ligament injury/tear. They take longer to heal than a bony fracture and sometimes a partial tear can progress to something more serious. Just food for thought!

Yes, they used to be Grasshoppers, but the store shelf said something about a new name and now they are called Fudge Mint Delights. Probably “Grasshopper” is trademarked by somebody.

Are things working out all right for your daughter at school?

I’m off schedule today because I had a very early dental appointment and am NOT a morning person. Then since I was partway there I went to visit Mom. Fortunately she was having a pretty good day and was smiling and happy to see me. I am lucky that we found a nice place with very kind caregivers. They have a young man there on the team and he was giving some of the ladies manicures this morning. So sweet.

So I was commando until lunchtime and then I sprayed on Zoologist Sacred Scarab which turned up on the Fragrantica list of chypres. It has a lot of the requisite components but on some lists it says bergamot and on others it says lemon. Not sure if that matters. It’s definitely an old school powerhouse. I am finding some note in it a bit sour today but can’t identify what it is.

My neighbor is growing some plants in big pots out in her courtyard and is doing well with some tomatoes and eggplants. I took the opportunity to rub the tomato leaves between my fingers and huff in the lovely sharp scent. I like it but not in my perfume thank you! Still waiting for the big gardenia bush to open its many buds.

🐇🐇🐇! Said it only once today, after asking Teflon kitty to let me up. The way she sleeps with me on the bed usually means that I am pinned down in some way or another. 😽

It’s a very windy day here again. Yesterday, the Amber Alert/Traffic Alert signs on the Interstate were warning high profile and light vehicles about high wind. Well duh! I was getting shoved around in my ride, so I knew about it already.

SOTD = vintage Diorissimo EdT, from the Sample Stash. I’m twins with quite a few people here today. It seems that lilac notes and LOTV don’t stick around as long in the dry Colorado air as they did in the humidity of NJ.

That wind today is outrageous! My truck is doing a dance while parked. No way I’d be driving anywhere today. 💨🌬️💨

It’s funny how perfume acts depending on the weather. I guess the humidity helps it stick to skin?

I think humidity actually helps the scent molecules get to your nose. But this is speculation on my part.

There are some smells that I have no problem with here, like a skunk! Pee-yew! 🦨

Smelling fantastic in Cristalle EDT today. Had a terrible night of sleep last night and a big workload today (and the rest of this week and next) but at least I smell great. Oh, and it’s a beautiful day. I’m thankful to have a little balcony I can step out in for little breaks and fresh air every now and then.

I forgot my rabbits this morning.
I had planned on wearing LOTV with Jessica McClintock but then the school called me to come get my daughter again so I picked Ysatis ( because JM is too care free smelling for my mood)
I’m on work lunch now and eating a chocolate chip pancake Pop Tart. It’s delicious. Which reminds me that sometime this week I am going to watch the new Jerry Seinfeld movie Unfrosted on Netflix. I’m really looking forward to it.

Wishing you and your girl a peaceful day. I too am a JM fan, and I’ve compared the vintage and the modern. I agree both smell good. Of course my modern one is probably more than 5 years old!

It’s not vintage as far as I know, but this is my 4th bottle since the 90’s and I have never noticed a difference.

Chiming in late to say I’m awash in vintage Diorella, a fruity chypre and one of my faves of that era. I am not a LOTV fan so no Diorissimo for me. But this one has always embraced me. Lillyjo I hope your daughter finds a peaceful creative way to thrive in school. It’s so hard being that age, today more than ever.
