Thursday scent of the day 3/14

Posted by Robin on 14 March 2024 148 Comments

It's Almost-Friday and Pi Day. Birthdays: Albert Einstein, Diane Arbus, Quincy Jones. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Diptyque Eau Duelle (included in 5 perfumes ~ vanilla fragrances for summer).

Reminder: 3/15 will be Vanilla Friday...wear your bestest vanilla for spring (or fall, if you're in the southern hemisphere.) (This is a repeat from 2018, when we did it in January.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Sotd is my newest Amouage acquisition – Dia 40.

    Here is my mini review:
A dazzling display of aldehyde fireworks. Soapy, clean and powerful. The symphony lights up the night sky, brighter and more brilliant than the milky way. They illuminate what lies beneath, a field of lush and vibrant flowers, their scents so rich they’re almost creamy. Ylang-ylang, rose, carnation, orange blossoms and cistus perfectly interspersed, their colours and fragrances creating the most balanced and elegant backdrop to the vivid display of lights. However, like true fireworks, this beauty is not eternal nor lasting. Before long, the sparks will die down and the flowers will lose their spotlight, leaving a mere hint of haziness as a reminder of what had been moments ago. Perhaps it is this very nature of fleetingness, it never overstays its welcome. Conversely, it leaves us wanting. Hence each new application will have our fullest attention, filling us with the same sense of wonder and awe at its beauty all over again.

(Robin, I know this is your place so if you prefer that I don’t review here please let me know! Sorry in advance!)

They are very similar. Dia 40 is like an amped up version. Think Dia after having a can of Popeyes spinach!

Sotd is Serge Lutens Douce Amere for the CP. A soft, lovely vanilla and white flowers scent. Great for the warm, sunny day we will have today in the upper 60s.

    Happy almost Friday! 🌞

Wearing the new Azurée Legacy on one wrist, and some vintage Aramis on the other – they are clearly close cousins. Siblings, really. The Azurée is lighter, a touch more floral, and feels more legible/streamlined/modern (to use perfume words,) than the Aramis, but both are wonderful.

It’s a classic. Amazing how scent conjures such vivid memories. Aramis was probably a bit too assertive for my dad, (who only occasionally wore aftershave – usually Bay Rum.) I also think he was reluctant to spend money on something that would call attention to himself. (I did not inherit this trait, clearly.😁) I love Aramis and its old-school vibe.

(I keep forgetting that America changes to daylight saving time a few weeks before us, so I keep being surprised the posts and comments are early. 😄)

Today one might say I am doing a crossover between NST CP and PriscillaE’s theme – Nicolai Vanille Tonka. Not your typical vanilla – at least not baking vanilla. Plenty of cinnamon. Lovely.

I am excited for two reasons. First, today I delivered a translation I’ve been working on since last Wednesay, including during the weekend. I plan to relax from Friday to Sunday, especially considering that my birthday is on Sunday. Delicious food, plenty of rest, hopefully no work till Monday. Yay!

Second, today the surgeon will remove some of the stitches – in an hour. Hopefully, the wound will itch less after that.

Yeah, the daylight savings thing in North America can be a real pain if you work in a multinational company — have to remember that the time zones are off for a few weeks a year when you schedule meetings.

Today I am explorinh Dilis №1
Dilis is a company from Belarus. They create budget friendly fragrances, but according to their story they employ French perfumers and use French ingredients to create their formulas.

Most of their fragrances are homages to famous perfumes.

Dilis №1 is supposed to be something similar to Climat by Lancome. I am not sure, I smelled Climat once in a department store and it was already a very modern reformulated version. I remember it being soapy and harsh.

Well Dilis №1 is exactly that: soapy and a bit harsh in the opening but it becomes a flowery aldehyde

I will wear it with great pleasure and buy another bottle for my mom. Like most Soviet women she was a great fan of Climat since it was one of the few foreign fragrances available here. I think she will love it too.

French perfumes were very rare. You could find them only in the largest department stores in Moscow and St Petersbourg and you probably had to stand in a huge line to get your chance to buy a bottle of coveted fragrance when they were in stock… It helped if you knew the store manager as well, foreign perfumes were very hard to get! Deficit is the word

Climat was not the only one of course, although it was relatively cheaper than some others and it was used in a very popular Soviet movie so maybe that played a role in it’s popularity

Magie Noir was very popular as well
Fiji and J’ai Ose from Guy Laroche were popular
        Paloma Picasso
Diorella, Diorissimo, Miss Dior and Dioressense and Poison were popular
        L’Air du Temps
        Estee by Estee Lauder
        Opium by YSL
        and some others

I don’t know who was behind the decisions which ones to bring to Moscow, but I have to say, judging by this list, Soviet women had a very decent taste in perfume =)

Shalimar MI for me today, turning yesterday’s scent on its head. (Yesterday was iris-forward, vanilla in a light supporting role.)

@Jalapeno — on your comment yesterday, it took 3 weeks for me to get the discovery set from Puente. It took almost a week for them to ship it, then it cleared the international shipping depot in Spain a day or two later, and then no news after that, so I imagine I have Canada Post to blame. It’s likely faster to the U.S.

SOTD = 4160 Tuesdays Creamy Vanilla Crumble

    Mmmmm good! 🥰

    https://www.instagram.com/p/C4gD8naLBXD/?igsh=bGt5YWgydHdoc3hn

When my sister and BIL go away and cannot bring their little Havanese, they drop him off to either a friend or to a dog-sitter (no kennels!). Today, I read an article in the NYTimes about luxurious accommodations for dogs but since the writer was doing a piece, he decided to tag along! Note: There may be access issues unless you either already have a NYTimes subscription or still have a non-zero balance in your free reading account.

Oh, that does sound like a fragrance I should try!

That article is fascinating…less the part about the hotels than the part about pet ownership & happiness, which is the opposite of what I thought.

“The most surprising finding in the field of anthrozoology, which studies human-animal relationships, might be that there’s no conclusive link between pets and well-being. In 2021, Megan Mueller at Tufts University discovered that pet owners were twice as likely to report being depressed as those without pets. The finding was only an association: We can’t really say whether pets are responsible for that depression or if depressed people are simply more likely to have pets. Still, “the mismatch between our personal experience with the animals that we love and what the research says is a complete mystery,” Hal Herzog, an anthrozoologist and emeritus professor at Western Carolina University, told me. “Most studies don’t show that pet owners are happier; that pet owners are less depressed; that pet owners go to the doctor less.” “

I found an unused sample of Le Lion in a pencil case yesterday when I was looking for a rubber ( erasure…I ain’t no lioness ). Must have been hiding amongst the 2Bs for several years and it’s nice. I like it. Raining cats and dogs here, and it’s dark, but the water on the leaves are catching the light from the street lamps, so they look like they are covered in fairy lights. Also nice.

I remember the first time someone used the term “rubber” to refer to an eraser around me. Did a double take, and quickly asked for clarification.

I’m back home, and so is my mother, so things are returning to normal. I’ll visit her again shortly, and will have time to catch up with other people, which I couldn’t this time. I’m frazzled – work was crazy and I had to spend a lot of time arranging home help and such. At least I was able to work remotely, that has been useful.
As I’m now back home with all my perfume, I’m wearing lots of vanilla with SHL 777 Taklamakan.

I’m not doing the CP today because I am wearing Isvaraya. I just came across my bottle while looking for something else in one of my cabinets. Wow is this a sweet and suffocating scent–but I love it! I am a total sucker for perfumes with a plum note. Mmm. But I had better not get close to anybody! Just going out to run some errands.

For the CP, Lattafa Nebras. It is my recent “candy crush” – an almost medicinal cane sugar with musk and vanilla and a fruity smell that gets worrisomely close to my much-dreaded plug-ins aisle smell. It just works anyway, and I almost love it. Just occurred to me that I get the same feeling with Ciara, which I do love. In book of the week news, I just finished a random book grab, which was in our library’s freebie section, The Masters by C. P. Snow. I judged it by its cover, which is a vintage British Penguin paperback. But it quickly drew me in, and I did know about C. P. Snow before. The story has a Playhouse 90/American Playhouse kind of vibe. Worth checking out, or maybe many of you already know it?

I have read the whole Strangers & Brothers series, I think twice but it’s been a long time and I might read it again. I can’t remember which volume is The Masters but you’re starting someplace in the middle.

Nearly never hear of anyone reading CP Snow so I am glad you are.

I went with Love Don’t Be Shy today for a sugary, citrus blossom vanilla. My rollerball 10ml decant (may have only had 8ml in it when I got it) from like 11-13 years ago has lasted forever. A little roll of the ball goes a long way for this one. But I think I have 1-3 uses left now.

24 hours ago I was watching rain coming down. Now, it’s snowing lightly. Looks like there is maybe 3 inches of very wet snow outside. I doubt I will get much more than that. So it’s firmly in the “Nuisance Snow” category.

It’s also been too warm for it to stick to sidewalks and streets. Plus the precipitation has been switching back and forth between rain and snow.

    Phooey.

SOTD = vintage Cabochard, thanks to AnnE.
