It's Almost-Friday and Pi Day. Birthdays: Albert Einstein, Diane Arbus, Quincy Jones. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Diptyque Eau Duelle (included in 5 perfumes ~ vanilla fragrances for summer).
Reminder: 3/15 will be Vanilla Friday...wear your bestest vanilla for spring (or fall, if you're in the southern hemisphere.) (This is a repeat from 2018, when we did it in January.)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hello.
Sotd is my newest Amouage acquisition – Dia 40.
Here is my mini review:
A dazzling display of aldehyde fireworks. Soapy, clean and powerful. The symphony lights up the night sky, brighter and more brilliant than the milky way. They illuminate what lies beneath, a field of lush and vibrant flowers, their scents so rich they’re almost creamy. Ylang-ylang, rose, carnation, orange blossoms and cistus perfectly interspersed, their colours and fragrances creating the most balanced and elegant backdrop to the vivid display of lights. However, like true fireworks, this beauty is not eternal nor lasting. Before long, the sparks will die down and the flowers will lose their spotlight, leaving a mere hint of haziness as a reminder of what had been moments ago. Perhaps it is this very nature of fleetingness, it never overstays its welcome. Conversely, it leaves us wanting. Hence each new application will have our fullest attention, filling us with the same sense of wonder and awe at its beauty all over again.
(Robin, I know this is your place so if you prefer that I don’t review here please let me know! Sorry in advance!)
How does it compare to Dia Classic?
They are very similar. Dia 40 is like an amped up version. Think Dia after having a can of Popeyes spinach!
Is this a sample, or did you sample before buying? Sounds like you’re really enjoying it!
I sampled twice in store and couldn’t resist so I have a full bottle.
Noted!!!!
I need to dig around for my sample of that one, cuz it sounds wonderful!
Oh wait, that was meant for pl67. Sorry!
What? Even when I was writing reviews I did not mind people putting reviews in comments. It is helpful to others! Go for it!
Thank you Robin 🩷
Sotd is Serge Lutens Douce Amere for the CP. A soft, lovely vanilla and white flowers scent. Great for the warm, sunny day we will have today in the upper 60s.
Happy almost Friday! 🌞
You have my yesterday’s weather. Today I am back to cool and raining. Enjoy the day!🌞
Thank you, Lillyjo. Looking forward to a
nice, long walk at lunchtime. Your weather is arriving tomorrow. Back to cold, rainy days here too!
Douce Amère is so beautiful!
It is! One of my favorites from SL.
“Nothing lasts forever, not even cold November rain!”
I don’t really want to rush the warm weather. Summer comes and I will be complaining a lot about hot temperatures.
Still in Nicolai, this time in Week-End in Normandy. Lovely.
It is lovely!
CSP Vanille Ambre. Simplicity itself, but really appealing and beautiful.
You really have a good CSP collection pyramus!
Both Mr. G and I vastly overslept, in my case awakened by one of those frustration nightmares where everything is going horribly wrong. So my SOTM was chosen for comfort and gets me no points at all — I’m in Caleche until my brain settles down.
Ugh, hope the day improved SheriG!
Hate those kinds of dreams! It seems to take forever for all the bad juju to leave.
Wearing Angélique Noire today, current and vintage. Will repost in a little while to give my assessment of whether it’s been reformulated.
Looking forward to that, and you are smelling wonderful in the mean time.
Thanks! I really don’t smell any difference between them, the smell, sillage and longevity of the current version are great to my nose.
That’s so good to know! Angelique Noire is a favourite.
Yes indeed – same here!
Nice to hear a current version of something is decent!
Thank you for doing this! Glad to hear it wasn’t reformulated.
Wearing the new Azurée Legacy on one wrist, and some vintage Aramis on the other – they are clearly close cousins. Siblings, really. The Azurée is lighter, a touch more floral, and feels more legible/streamlined/modern (to use perfume words,) than the Aramis, but both are wonderful.
I will always remember my dad wearing Aramis. I think he used a heavy hand with it, but I loved it! Thanks for the memories 💕
It’s a classic. Amazing how scent conjures such vivid memories. Aramis was probably a bit too assertive for my dad, (who only occasionally wore aftershave – usually Bay Rum.) I also think he was reluctant to spend money on something that would call attention to himself. (I did not inherit this trait, clearly.😁) I love Aramis and its old-school vibe.
(I keep forgetting that America changes to daylight saving time a few weeks before us, so I keep being surprised the posts and comments are early. 😄)
Today one might say I am doing a crossover between NST CP and PriscillaE’s theme – Nicolai Vanille Tonka. Not your typical vanilla – at least not baking vanilla. Plenty of cinnamon. Lovely.
I am excited for two reasons. First, today I delivered a translation I’ve been working on since last Wednesay, including during the weekend. I plan to relax from Friday to Sunday, especially considering that my birthday is on Sunday. Delicious food, plenty of rest, hopefully no work till Monday. Yay!
Second, today the surgeon will remove some of the stitches – in an hour. Hopefully, the wound will itch less after that.
Wonderful news, Glannys!
Glad you have some time to relax & not itch!
Yeah, the daylight savings thing in North America can be a real pain if you work in a multinational company — have to remember that the time zones are off for a few weeks a year when you schedule meetings.
Good news all around! 👏🏼👏🏼
Happy birthday weekend. Congratulations on your translation and good luck with the itchiness
Have a happy birthday, and I am glad to read your other good news. 🙂
Happy birthday! 🎂
Congrats and happy birthday weekend!
Glad of your good news and that now you can relax.
Happiest of birthdays to you!💐
Excellent news! 👏🏻
Happy birthday!
Happy early Birthday!
Happy early birthday, Glannys!
All good news Glannys! Hope the stitches came out easy peasy, and hope your weekend is fantastic and restful.
Thanks everyone. The stitches came out fine, but I still need to come one last time on Monday to have the rest of the stitches removed (they only removed some of them).
Congratulations! Enjoy your birthday weekend!
Today I am explorinh Dilis №1
Dilis is a company from Belarus. They create budget friendly fragrances, but according to their story they employ French perfumers and use French ingredients to create their formulas.
Most of their fragrances are homages to famous perfumes.
Dilis №1 is supposed to be something similar to Climat by Lancome. I am not sure, I smelled Climat once in a department store and it was already a very modern reformulated version. I remember it being soapy and harsh.
Well Dilis №1 is exactly that: soapy and a bit harsh in the opening but it becomes a flowery aldehyde
I will wear it with great pleasure and buy another bottle for my mom. Like most Soviet women she was a great fan of Climat since it was one of the few foreign fragrances available here. I think she will love it too.
I used to wear climat in the 70s , one of my first scents, and had a similar vibe to my mother’s River Gauche. Wish I still had some.
It’s a shame they didn’t keep it in their selection. Now we have to rely on copies made by other companies if we want some Climat =)
Such wonderful green fragrances. I wish they still made ‘em like that!
Now it seems that they must have a gourmand component, like today’s mention.
Seems I have heard that before about Climat but can’t remember why it was available and other brands weren’t?
French perfumes were very rare. You could find them only in the largest department stores in Moscow and St Petersbourg and you probably had to stand in a huge line to get your chance to buy a bottle of coveted fragrance when they were in stock… It helped if you knew the store manager as well, foreign perfumes were very hard to get! Deficit is the word
Climat was not the only one of course, although it was relatively cheaper than some others and it was used in a very popular Soviet movie so maybe that played a role in it’s popularity
Magie Noir was very popular as well
Fiji and J’ai Ose from Guy Laroche were popular
Paloma Picasso
Diorella, Diorissimo, Miss Dior and Dioressense and Poison were popular
L’Air du Temps
Estee by Estee Lauder
Opium by YSL
and some others
I don’t know who was behind the decisions which ones to bring to Moscow, but I have to say, judging by this list, Soviet women had a very decent taste in perfume =)
Thank you Veronika!
I am wearing Divine Vanille, it’s so easy to wear, fresh clean vanilla!!
I am not working today, at home with some books !!
A day at home with books is wonderful, enjoy. 🙂
Thank you, there is a perfume event at Etiket on march 26 th. Will you be here?
I didn’t receive the announcement, what is the event about? It’s the day after I arrive.
Don’t you love getting a leg cramp in the middle of the night?
GRRRR
Post shower Vanille 44.
This is a wonderful community project.
aspara, years ago I had fractured my left ankle, and every night I’d get a cramp. the only way for me to get rid of it was to stand on it-which was impossible lol. You smell good 🙂
🙂
Owwwww. Leg cramps SUCK!
Have you tried taking Magnesium?
Shalimar MI for me today, turning yesterday’s scent on its head. (Yesterday was iris-forward, vanilla in a light supporting role.)
@Jalapeno — on your comment yesterday, it took 3 weeks for me to get the discovery set from Puente. It took almost a week for them to ship it, then it cleared the international shipping depot in Spain a day or two later, and then no news after that, so I imagine I have Canada Post to blame. It’s likely faster to the U.S.
It took nearly three weeks to get to me in California as well, since it took them over a week just to process & mail it.
Thanks!
I wouldn’t assume US shipments are any better. There are a couple of carriers that have a less than stellar reputation. Unfortunately I am dealing with one of them right now.
SOTD = 4160 Tuesdays Creamy Vanilla Crumble
Mmmmm good! 🥰

When my sister and BIL go away and cannot bring their little Havanese, they drop him off to either a friend or to a dog-sitter (no kennels!). Today, I read an article in the NYTimes about luxurious accommodations for dogs but since the writer was doing a piece, he decided to tag along! Note: There may be access issues unless you either already have a NYTimes subscription or still have a non-zero balance in your free reading account.
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/14/magazine/luxury-dog-hotels.html
Oh, that does sound like a fragrance I should try!
That article is fascinating…less the part about the hotels than the part about pet ownership & happiness, which is the opposite of what I thought.
“The most surprising finding in the field of anthrozoology, which studies human-animal relationships, might be that there’s no conclusive link between pets and well-being. In 2021, Megan Mueller at Tufts University discovered that pet owners were twice as likely to report being depressed as those without pets. The finding was only an association: We can’t really say whether pets are responsible for that depression or if depressed people are simply more likely to have pets. Still, “the mismatch between our personal experience with the animals that we love and what the research says is a complete mystery,” Hal Herzog, an anthrozoologist and emeritus professor at Western Carolina University, told me. “Most studies don’t show that pet owners are happier; that pet owners are less depressed; that pet owners go to the doctor less.” “
4160 Tuesdays is one of “your” houses, for sure!
I was going to wear Tihota but my hand went straight for Box of Eels parfum and I finished the tiny 5ml bottle. Good thing I have another 33 mls. I’ll wear Tihota tomorrow.
I had to buy a new computer, so today is the hassle of setting it up the way I want it and changing password managers because I don’t like the old one. I have to get rid of the bloatware, too.
Good luck with all that. I like Tihota too, a very good vanilla choice!
Hope you’re feeling better today!
What do you use to get rid of your bloatware? Something like CCleaner?
No, I just look at all the programs and uninstall the ones I know I don’t want. Sometimes they can’t be removed, like Microsoft’s Cortana and Edge, but I can disable them.
Wearing Ummagumma today for the CP, but also for the incense and chocolate. My bottle is about halfway gone and I’m thinking I may need a BUB because this is one of my Top 10.
The sun is out and it’s supposed to get above 50* F today. ☀️ We are taking a hike to Deadman’s Cove when I’m done with coffee/breakfast and I hope the climb up then down doesn’t make me a Dead Woman. It’s been a while…😬
Enjoy your hike. You can do it!
Glad to hear that you have had a stretch of drier weather out there.
I found an unused sample of Le Lion in a pencil case yesterday when I was looking for a rubber ( erasure…I ain’t no lioness ). Must have been hiding amongst the 2Bs for several years and it’s nice. I like it. Raining cats and dogs here, and it’s dark, but the water on the leaves are catching the light from the street lamps, so they look like they are covered in fairy lights. Also nice.
Pretty, and optimistic, way to describe the rain. Over this way, every time it rains this season we hope aloud that it helps to reservoir, as the snowpack is scanty.
Kanuka, your atmospheric evocations are unmatched. ❤️
I remember the first time someone used the term “rubber” to refer to an eraser around me. Did a double take, and quickly asked for clarification.
The sun is out and I want to encourage it, so am wearing Pacifica Malibu Lemon Blossom.
We had a gorgeous sunny day here too 🙂
I’m in Jicky parfum-just a drop. I really love this stuff. I normally don’t like lavendar, but I adore this.
Same…not a lavender fiend, love Jicky 🙂
Going mainstream today, but surprisingly it does contain vanilla. Marc Jacob’s Daisy.
Good call, Daisy is a good no-brainer.
Daisy is such a cheerful perfume without being insipid.
I’m back home, and so is my mother, so things are returning to normal. I’ll visit her again shortly, and will have time to catch up with other people, which I couldn’t this time. I’m frazzled – work was crazy and I had to spend a lot of time arranging home help and such. At least I was able to work remotely, that has been useful.
As I’m now back home with all my perfume, I’m wearing lots of vanilla with SHL 777 Taklamakan.
Ahhh, smelling fabulous! I’m glad everything is working out, but yeah, being on hold while trying to get stuff done is really frustrating.
I bet you are frazzled! Hope things do settle quickly.
I’m not doing the CP today because I am wearing Isvaraya. I just came across my bottle while looking for something else in one of my cabinets. Wow is this a sweet and suffocating scent–but I love it! I am a total sucker for perfumes with a plum note. Mmm. But I had better not get close to anybody! Just going out to run some errands.
Hope you managed to do your errands without asphyxiating anybody 🙂
How many perfumes do you have with a plum note?
I’m wearing PG Felanilla on an ordinary Thursday. Had quite a productive day at work and am glad there is only one day left till the weekend.
You smell fabulous. That’s one of my desert island perfumes. ❤️
I don’t know if it would make it to my desert island list, but it is wonderful!
Felanilla is a “kitten fur” perfume on me. Reminds me of how one of my cats used to smell.
One of my cats smells like roast chicken. I don’t know how he does it.
For the CP, Lattafa Nebras. It is my recent “candy crush” – an almost medicinal cane sugar with musk and vanilla and a fruity smell that gets worrisomely close to my much-dreaded plug-ins aisle smell. It just works anyway, and I almost love it. Just occurred to me that I get the same feeling with Ciara, which I do love. In book of the week news, I just finished a random book grab, which was in our library’s freebie section, The Masters by C. P. Snow. I judged it by its cover, which is a vintage British Penguin paperback. But it quickly drew me in, and I did know about C. P. Snow before. The story has a Playhouse 90/American Playhouse kind of vibe. Worth checking out, or maybe many of you already know it?
I don’t know the novel but another of C.P Snow’s creations is mentioned in Gaudy Night by Dorothy Sayers.
I’ll check out Gaudy Night. I’ve gotten quite a few of that sort of referral from Barbara Pym’s novels.
I have read the whole Strangers & Brothers series, I think twice but it’s been a long time and I might read it again. I can’t remember which volume is The Masters but you’re starting someplace in the middle.
Nearly never hear of anyone reading CP Snow so I am glad you are.
I am going to follow up!
I’m in Winter Palace today.
This one didn’t work for me. The bottle is beautiful, however.
lucasai – have I missed all your musings on trip to Milan??
No, i was doing a lot of stories on Instagram from Esxence but i havent written anything
I veered off of the vanilla path and am wearing Miss Dior Originale.
And smelling great!
Nice to have company on the “Not Vanilla Today” path. 😉
YSL Cinema today, perfect for our spring day, and works for the CP with a bourbon vanilla basenote. Awake in the night from 3 – 5am, but did a good workout this morning.
You smell delightful! My sister and I share a fondness for Cinema.
Yikes! That was a severely early wake up. Hope you sleep well tonight.
Sweet dreams tonight!😴
CP adherent in L’Artisan Vanilia here – nice fit for a cool and relentlessly rainy day.
(Doing my best to hold a perfect storm of work and family stressors at bay, coming at me from all directions.)
Pull up your hood and keep dry! 🤞🏻
🌊🏄🏻♂️🌂☔️
☀️🌜🌟
Pear and yogurt smoothie
Neal Yard’s Rose this morning and tonight Vanira Moorea for the CP.
Hey Aurora, have you ever used any of the NY shower gels?
Safran Troublant for today. I was looking at my bottles, and lo and behold, lots of vanilla! Loving it.
Love Safran Troublant–it’s gorgeous.
Thanks!
IIRC, Safran Troublant had a scent cousin in one of the Calligraphy perfumes.
Right, I remember those. One was saffron, and the other was rose.
TF Tobacco Vanille today, and I’m reveling in five sprays.
One of my favorites. You smell great!
I went with Love Don’t Be Shy today for a sugary, citrus blossom vanilla. My rollerball 10ml decant (may have only had 8ml in it when I got it) from like 11-13 years ago has lasted forever. A little roll of the ball goes a long way for this one. But I think I have 1-3 uses left now.
I do like that one on occasion. The orange blossom makes it.
I should re-sniff my sample of that. You’re making it sound quite tempting.
I do really enjoy this one, but it aged so beautifully that I’m worried the current version will pale in comparison. But I’ll try to sample it soon to see.
24 hours ago I was watching rain coming down. Now, it’s snowing lightly. Looks like there is maybe 3 inches of very wet snow outside. I doubt I will get much more than that. So it’s firmly in the “Nuisance Snow” category.
It’s also been too warm for it to stick to sidewalks and streets. Plus the precipitation has been switching back and forth between rain and snow.
Phooey.
SOTD = vintage Cabochard, thanks to AnnE.
Hmmm – there’s a lot more at my former neighborhood. Maybe it went south of you.
Most of it did go south and west of me. Places closer to the foothills got slammed. Out on the plains, not so much. DIA officially got 1.1 inches as of this afternoon.
Glad it is just nuisance snow.
I think Cabochard is my favorite leather. Followed by BV or Cuir the Hermes one. Lol I am too lazy to go look.
I am very annoyed! I stocked up at the grocery stores for three stinking inches of snow? Ridiculous! 😤😡
Still sick so no perfume for me.
So just saying hi.👋
Howdy, hi, greetings, and I hope you feel better tomorrow!
Wearing perfume isn’t a prerequisite for posting here. If it was, I’d be in trouble!
Feel better ASAP!
I hope you feel better tomorrow, lillyjo! 🤗
Hi! So sorry you’re still sick. I’m sending health vibes your way👩⚕️
Wearing gentle Fluidity Gold. Amazingly good lasting power 14 hours later.
That is serious lasting power!
