Wednesday scent of the day 2/21

Posted by Robin on 21 February 2024 116 Comments

It's Wednesday and International Mother Language Day. Birthdays: Anaïs Nin, WH Auden, Nina Simone, John Lewis, Alan Rickman. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Lush Silky Underwear. My bottle is not in great shape — the far dry down is still lovely but the top and middle have gone sour — and I have just tossed it. I am almost glad Lush does not make it anymore or I'd be tempted to replace it, and if I could not finish the 30 ml bottle in 12 years I guess I don't need more. (Plus, when I investigated the primary ingredients to see if I could get any community project points, turns out some jasminium species are invasive in New Zealand. Oops!)

Reminder: on 2/23, we're off to New Zealand! Wear a perfume that is named for a place in New Zealand, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to New Zealand, or that features a local ingredient, or ?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2024, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    Hello.
Sotd is Lush Goddess again because it’s quite lovely. The notes listed do not contain any citrus but I swear I can smell it!
I have been using Lush’s Goodnight Sweetheart pillowmist and it smells fab. It’s a limited edition so if you are interested, grab it now! It’s is a 15ml bottle so using it up won’t be an issue. I actually wish it came in a bigger size.

Good morning, I’m wearing Jessica simpson fiend, from an enormous bottle that only cost $10 at tj maxx. It’s in the not a perfume style, easy to wear.

Has anyone smelled the original dior homme and can tell me how feminine and/or iris-y it is? Is there a perfume you can compare it to?

I haven’t smelled it in eons but memory is that is was iris-y, sweet, and not particularly feminine but a woman could wear it for sure. I think it was considered daring at the time but would not be now.

I have never smelt the original Dior Homme (very curious though) but have seen it compared to Iris Torrefie by Guerlain and Belle Ame by Les Abstraits (independent company for which the perfumer is Antoine Lie and the lab same as sourcing for Eris and Les Indemodables) both of which I own as I love iris.

Belle Ame is a new flame of mine- iris prominent softly sweet with resins, ginger, florals and musk.

    https://www.agsa.sa.gov.au/collection-publications/collection/works/at-the-window/25066/

I am continuing with an art theme with Frances Hodgkins, born in Dunedin 1869. Even though NZ ahead art schools from the 1880s, artists were very isolated from international trends and movements and tended to have a very formal ( classical) training until artists from overseas started to emigrate and take up positions, bringing with them new ideas such as Impressionism. Also, as locals became wealthier, some were able to travel and buy art for NZ galleries ( such as Monets). Artists such as Hodgkins found NZ pretty dull ( like Mansfield had) and went overseas, travelled in Britain, Europe, Africa. Hodgkins work becomes modernist in later life ( tilted perspective, bright colours) but I’m going with this more impressionist work, painted In France and partnering with Cristalle.

Commando for now — had to be out the door on the early side and was rushing. I’m wearing bright orange cashmere (sweater), so probably will go for HdP 1804 to suit my sweater and the sunshine.

Robin’s comment at the top of the post reminds me that I’ve wanted to ask about how people discard perfume when that needs to happen. The 1/4-full bottle that I found a while back when I reorganized my socks turns out to have gone off — I thought it was fine, then wore it and discovered it’s not good.

I could recycle the bottle (I take empty cosmetics containers — plastic and glass — to L’Occitane two or three times a year, and they work through TerraCycle) if I dispose of the juice. Soak a paper towel and put it in the garbage (outside)? Other thoughts? (I won’t pour it down the drain. I don’t know if flushing is okay?)

I commend you on your thoughts regarding recycling.

My thoughts on discarding perfumes once they’ve turned – I assume that the alcohol would have evaporated by that time so I wouldn’t think twice about chucking it in the 🗑️. I do realize that I am not the environment-friendly sort but I would rather spend my time doing other things.

If you take the top off you can put the bottle in the recycle bin. I cut myself doing that once and so now I just toss them in the trash, sadly. Really glad to see all the refillable bottles now!

Jaisalmer to catch some zen today, which I’m in desperate need of.

Doggo is at the vet getting all kinds of bipedal attention while they wait the 4-6 hours after med administration to do a blood level for evaluation of her thyroid meds. She didn’t even say goodbye to me, just pranced off without a backwards glance with dog nurse, tail wagging and gazing adoringly up at her newest admirer. All I get is a lifted lip and a dirty look when I clip her nails.

    Unrequited love is hard…💔

Chanel Boy EdP again. I’ve realized that lately I’ve sprayed out of my decants more than full bottles. If I am leaving the house I tend towards a full bottle scent, but at home it’s decants.
I’ve gone though about 12 ml of Boy over the last 9 months, so i think a full bottle would be nice…but I was worried about getting the bottle then not using it.
Then I had a brain wave – I can decant some from the full bottle and keep that bit on my desk. Duh!
So yeah, it’s a full bottle for me sometime in the next 6 months!

Well played on the decanting brainwave! As it happens I just did something with a bottle of Chanel Paris-Venise: a friend gave me a bottle some orange blossom body wash, and I am so-so about that note. I then remembered that Paris-Venise has orange blossom in it, so I’ve added a bunch of spritzes and am letting it macerate. If it’s a reasonable facsimile then I know longer have to hunt down the real gel at ca. ten times the price.

It’s not unlike making custom lampe berger fuel, which consists of 99% alcohol and a decant of a perfume you like. It’s ca 1/3 the price of the brand name version.

In other news, I just read that American Airlines will be charging $40 to check a bag or $35 if you pay in advance online. I don’t travel light so I will definitely get socked with these fees, all in the interest of the airlines’ money-grabbing tendencies. I’m pretty sure I can survive 2 days (3 tops) with just a carry-on. What is the most number of days you can go with just a regular sized carry-on (21”)?

13 days in India. 3 pairs of pants, 4 tops, 3 underwear sets, a hat, 4 pr socks, a nightgown, flip flops, toiletry bag with meds. Laundry was available and I did laundry twice. I wore a rain jacket, scarf, and hiking shoes on top of another outfit, so I had 4 pairs of pants and 5 tops total.

I miss him, too. Just saw a copy of his published diaries in the bookstore yesterday. Think I’ll look for it at the library, though.
I have loved him in the movies since Truly, Madly, Deeply. ❤️

I think I first spotted him in Die Hard and then Robin Hood. What a great comical villain he was! And as for Snape in the Harry Potter series- perfect casting!

Big yes. If you had told me before the movie came out that he was cast as Snape, I would have thought that he had been mis-cast. But he was perfect.

I tried to read his book but it was impossible. It was as if they copied his diary and bound the pages. All I could think before I gave up was that either his executor specified the book be unedited or the publisher was aiming for “quirky” in order to stand out. I could not finish it.

Rhubarb Ecarlate today, I wanted something tart and bright. I really should buy a big bottle, I wear it quite frequently. But I have so much other stuff already…

Did some vacuuming today and a couple other small chose today in the remnants of Sand and Sable. Since I have showered, I am in vintage Mitsouko extrait in all of her oakmoss glory.

Another day of temps in the 60’s here along the Front Range. It’s been nice not having to wear a coat or jacket while running errands. Not going to last, of course. It’s still February.

I was busy yesterday with items on my “To Do” list, and a couple of surprises. Didn’t get back home until sometime in the evening and decided it was too late to post.

One of the surprises: I was able to see Mr. Jalapeno’s Mom for the first time in a couple of years. She’s in Memory Care now, and had broken her back last year, so she’s in rough shape. Not bedridden, thankfully. But yesterday her eyes were bright, and she was pretty lucid, considering.

About 10 years ago, I asked her if I could keep in touch, should Mr. Jalapeno and I split up. She said yes. Nice to know I still have that connection. And yes, she did know who I was.

SOTD = Estee Legacy EdP, from the Sample Stash. So far I have really liked all the scents I have tried from the Legacy Collection sample kit.

Nice that you’re enjoying that sample collection! Such a bittersweet experience with Mr. Jalapeno Mom. I hope you felt more happy than sad after seeing her.

I was happy to see her on a good day, for sure.

That sample collection might be one of the best that I have ever picked up.

Me too, lillyjo. And her husband (not Mr. J’s Dad, btw) said that I am welcome to visit again as long as I give him a heads up.

Thanks. It was bittersweet, but more sweet than bitter this time.

So far, I’ve tested 3 of 5. I haven’t tried Azuree Legacy or Knowing Legacy yet. The Estee Legacy would be perfect for mild, sunny and Spring-like weather, IMO.

I am still on my Naomi Goodsir jag, today wearing Cuir de Velours. It’s soft leather at its best.
