Thursday scent of the day 11/30

Posted by Robin on 30 November 2023 111 Comments

It's Thursday and the last day of November. RIP Shane MacGowan. Birthdays today: Mark Twain, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Shirley Chisholm, Dick Clark. What fragrance are you wearing?

I've overslept again...I'm going to pick a fragrance later this morning!

Reminder: on 12/1, Rabbit rabbit rabbit! It's December. Wear a fragrance that will bring you peace, joy or good luck for the month.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m wearing Oajan from a decant. I have a couple of PdM decants and this is perfect for this time of year.

The news about Shane MacGowan hit me hard. His music has been incredibly dear to me since I discovered the Pogues back in the 80s, and they’ve been a foundational part of the soundtrack of my life. I’ve always been a sucker for a good lyricist and Shane was one of the best. I suppose I always thought that, given all that he’d been through and survived, he’d just keep going and going forever.

I’m not religious, but if there *is* a heaven, it’s getting better and better up there. Now Shane is hanging out with my mother and Madeline Kahn and Paul Reubens and Jim Henson. Sometimes, on random days of the year, they’ll dress up and trick-or-treat Prince’s house, and Prince rolls his eyes but invites them all in for pancakes.

Tempted to slosh some whiskey into my morning coffee in his honor, but since I’m chaperoning a school field trip today, I’ll go with some Irish Leather instead.

        The description fits

“ New York 5th Avenue in wintertime. Luxurious ingredients sparkle, imitating the twinkling lights illuminating dusk like fine gems”

Perfect for all the decorations in NYC right now.

    Hello.
Sotd is Tonka Sarrapia. I think I will try layering it with my Vanilla sample this weekend. Will report back!
I had this local HK tea time delicacy and I had to share. It’s a peanut butter sandwich French toast (deep fried!) topped with a thick slab of butter and drizzled with golden syrup (or honey). Vanilla ice-cream optional.

Molinard Habanita, the 2012 version, a thing of beauty.

You should read the company’s web page for the scent because it’s just delightful: it has some demented ad copy — what does “a rose whose petals seem cut from sheepskin” even mean? — and it was pretty clearly translated by machine, because the list of notes includes “small” (the first half of “petit grain”) and “pink” (rose). But it also says, “many men have been able to appropriate it. Its eastern wooded background is an absolute delight for comfort for these gentlemen,” which sounds about right.

Oh brave new world…the rise of machine-generated ad copy. Thanks for pointing this out, because I just recently learned what ChatGPT is about. But it is nice to think of some gentlemen somewhere delighting in the comfort of an eastern wooded background. I don’t know what version of Habanita I have, but I am sure you smell wonderful.

ChatGPT twins! I haven’t tried it yet but whatever you do, other than at sign-up, don’t utilize any personally identifiable data. I am tempted to go with the paid version – $20 / month.

Good to know, but I’m wanting to keep my distance for now. Some of the lawyers I worked for were talking about it. A couple of them also teach, and the implications in both fields were not that happy to my mind.

SOTM is one of my cheap thrill comfort scents, Kiehl’s Musk oil. I will layer something else over it later. This evening, we will be going to see a play “Georgiana and Kitty: Christmas at Pemberley”. This is the third, and presumably last, in a series of plays based on the characters from Pride and Prejudice. We saw the first two a few years ago and enjoyed them. In all, we have four plays and two concerts to attend between now and Christmas. I love live performances, but never got to go to as many as I would have liked due to logistical issues–either I couldn’t afford the tickets, or it didn’t fit in with my work schedule. Now that live performance have resumed after the initial COVID shutdown, we have a little more room in our budget for entertainment, and I don’t have to worry about rushing somewhere after work or being sleep deprived the next day because we got home late, I am trying to take in all the concerts and plays that I can.

There has been a change of plans; it is raining buckets and the rain is supposed to continue all day and evening. I was concerned about driving into Houston in all this mess (Houston is very prone to flash floods), so I called the theater and they let me exchange the tickets for another night. The plan for today is now to stay inside and stay dry.

SotD a generous spritzing of Coco Mademoiselle Intense. As usual, I’m surprised by how much I like it. Today, I’m noticing bergamot, labdanum and vanilla along with the fruitchouli. I am a fruitchouli fan, but those who think ick should give this a try. I can’t compare it to the original Mademoiselle. This is one I smelled, and was wowed by, in a magazine ad when it first came out. I then nabbed a bottle after that Christmas for a good price on Ebay.

I’m copying MossyBerry in Coco Mad Intense, just couldn’t decide today until I saw what you guys were wearing. Habanita got consideration but the bottle is harder to get to than the Coco and I seem to get lazier by the day. The list of things I can’t be bothered with gets longer all the time.

Wearing the same top as yesterday which is still wafting a gentle reminder of Salomé, so I will probably apply a fresh spritz or two and just go with it.

High 60’s yesterday with pedal to the metal sunshine all day. The weather gods pressed “Repeat” to my absolute delight! If I was a sunbather, which I never understood, even in my youth when it was the fashion to toast yourself, I’d be laying out nekkid today it’s just THAT lovely! 🌞

It’s a very light amber/incense. The notes list is orange, bergamot, geranium, incense, lavender, patchouli, vanilla, labdanum, opoponax, and amber, but for me it’s mostly a non-syrupy, not-too-sweet, slightly floral amber with hints of incense and cinnamon. I can’t really describe why it grabbed me the way it did, but you know how it is with fragrance — sometimes the chemistry is just right.

Bottega Veneta for a doctors visit and then work, this is a no-brainer in winter. They put up the christmas tree on the tower of the town hall, a sight that always makes me happy in dark december. Tomorrow i will visit my mother to pack for the first part of her move to assisted living, hoping that we will not fight too much. It is such a small apartment, just 27square meters, so room is scarce but last time she insisted she needed three kitchen aprons and at least 15 pairs of trousers. This will be no fun at all….

Went through that recently! My advice, let her bring the aprons, you can get rid of stuff later and sometimes it is easier. Obviously, you will have to win some of the battles or she won’t have room to unpack, but some stuff is easier put off to the other end.

I was very indecisive today wishing for something spicy but couldn’t think of anything I have. Instead I went through a dish I have of LL samples and sprayed on bits of both Rose Baie and the Aldehyde on, whatever number that is. Both vials are almost empty but I managed to get enough out to enjoy the combo. It’s like a prickly rose, sort of.

Off this week and it is a drizzly day here. Perfect for getting into reorganizing and cleaning our study, a task I have put off for the last year. Yesterday, I cleaned the oven and scrubbed bathrooms. I much prefer brute cleaning tasks to organizing tasks because I hate having to make decisions and categorize. Last time I deep cleaned/organized the study I had to take all the books out, reorganize based on subject and size and put it all back. But the worst part is my husband dumps folders of personal stuff that he thinks is important but is just a hodgepodge of receipts, pamphlets, medical stuff, etc all mixed together. Drives me nuts.

    Wearing MFK Gentle Fluidity Gold.

Let’s just say there’s a LOT to do.

I’m in an old-ish decant of Vero Profumo Rozy Voile d’Extrait that has just drops left. Like yesterday, this is a decant where the juice got thicker and more concentrated. I have plenty of decant bottles that don’t evaporate the perfume, but there are certain bottle styles that are prone to it. Anyway, this is a perfume that I wasn’t sure about when I first tried it, but it has grown on me in subsequent wearings. It’s kind of an odd duck too, hard for me to describe. I won’t buy a bottle when I finish it since bottles aren’t cheap and must be ordered from Italy, but I’ll enjoy what I do have left.

Going out to eat with a friend tonight to a recently opened Korean restaurant in the neighborhood and am looking forward to tasty food later!

Oh, hope the restaurant is great! And enjoy the rest of your Rozy.

Sampling Maison Tahite Sel Vanille today and it is spot on for a sunny but chilly walk on the beach in a cozy sweater vibe. I probably haven’t done that since college, but it has a very specific smell that is apparently ingrained in my brain.

Tea today is actually a coffee-tea blend. It is delicious but I can feel the extra caffeine!

Going down the Shore off season is always something special for me.

I grew up on Long Island, so the beach was always close by. We used it the way I think a lot of people use parks — it was a place to meet-up and then go somewhere else, a place to hang-out, to go running on the boardwalk, a place for picnics and bday parties, a place to, ahem, park 😂 I would be there in cool and cold weather much more than in hot weather, so the saltwater/beach frags without subscreen notes seem more accurate (and more nostolgic) to me than the ones with them.

Running late today! Woke up with a headache for the second time this week. Dunno if it is stress or changes in the weather. It was gone for a while, but now I’m feeling it creeping back.

Busy day today. I managed to get everything crossed off my “To Do” list this afternoon plus a couple of things that popped up unexpectedly. Hopefully I will continue being productive tomorrow.

SOTD = commando again, except for Dame Perfumery Orange Flower Body Butter in the usual spots. Perfume wasn’t a good idea today, what with the headache.

Would you pay someone $3,277 to put up decorations inside and outside your house? Not me.

I haven’t read the comments yet since early afternoon so don’t know if it was posted. The Wall Street Journal has a puff piece today on vanilla in perfume “How Vanilla Perfume Went From Sickly Sweet To Chic”. I will try to copy and paste below. The usual caveats apply …

I’ve seen small signs along some of the busy roads in my area this year, advertising a business that puts up Xmas lights.

I could not open it, but the opening lines about vanilla being shorthand for bland in perfume were so wrong I kind of didn’t worry about it.

Very late commenting. Commando all day simply because I was busy, just threw on some Mitsouko after seeing it mentioned above. It’s been a while. So good.

I have a friend visiting (and staying the night) Saturday, her first time at my new house (she’s several hours away). So this week has been both busy with work and catch-up house cleaning, as I tend to let things slide until I have a visitor. Which is silly. >>> I <<< enjoy when my house is clean and tidy. Just so easy to let things slide, day to day.

Y’all are motivating me to ramp up my cleaning. No houseguests nor puppies coming soon, but finding “heirloom” dishes still in bubble wrap from 10 years ago made me feel embarrassed! Next up: winnowing Christmas decor.

No need to be embarrassed! I have so much to do, the puppy will be 10 by the time I’m halfway through.
