Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, late October 2023

Posted by Robin on 28 October 2023 263 Comments

PSA: The splitmeet is open all weekend! And if you called dibs on something and haven't yet contacted your split host, please do so.

Meanwhile, we're whiling away the last weekend of October with our usual open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite spooky fragrance (or favorite Halloween candy), whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

So, I have COVID, no doubt thanks to that hacking, sneezing germ dispenser sitting behind me on the plane on Tuesday. Went to the library yesterday when I was merely a little under the weather and attributing that to the vaccines I’d gotten Wednesday, and they had stacks of rapid-assay kits for the taking, five to a box for some reason (fun for the whole family?). This morning I was unwell enough to take a test and it gave an unambiguous positive — and this after four years of not so much as a sniffle! I’m so disappointed in myself. Right now I’m in bed failing to get more sleep, but I’ve been sicker than this: it’s like the flu, and not a particularly bad case of it either (knock wood).

At least my sense of smell is intact, and I’m wearing TF Lost Cherry because I felt like it: it does put me in a good mood.

So sorry to hear you are sick and speedy recovery.

I had similar experience a month ago, got COVID on tail end of my vacation after NOT getting it for 3+ years, even working directly with COVID patients. Unfortunately, I started feeling sick on the plane (sore throat and runny nose). I put on mask as soon as I felt sick but I couldn’t do much else on 8 hour flight. Luckily I was in window seat with my daughter as a buffer in middle seat. She never got sick. I think I caught COVID from crowded venues a few days before my flight back.

But I do feel lucky that COVID was no worse than a bad cold for me. It seems as if most cases now – either due to vaccinations (I had 5) or the virus changing – are not life threatening. And it was so nice to be able to do the quick test at home instead of driving all around. My test turned positive before the positive control.

I am going to get the updated COVID shot. Even though I get very sick with the shot, I would rather be sick for a day if it cuts my odds of getting bad COVID or infecting others.

Hi all, I had my surgery this week and been at home recovering. Reading a lot and I binged watched Drops of God on Apple TV and thought the Japanese actor was 😍. I have been commando but today I dabbed a little of le lion 🦁 on one wrist. My stomach goes up and down the nausea so perfume is not best for me. Le lion doesn’t seem to phase me much since it’s a lot like Shalimar, so it’s familiar and comforting. Wishing everyone a great weekend and I will catch up on comments later

I succumbed. I tried it twice and couldn’t bring myself to forget it, so I bought the new LV extrait Myriad.
It’s a potent natural oud, slightly dirty, with roses in the background. I don’t smell the cocoa though, but it’s no issue. I read somewhere it’s 30% concentrate and it shows through it’s longer wear time.
Food-wise, I found a Portugese Coconut Chicken recipe I liked and made it. The ingredients list is pretty long but it’s worth the effort. I really enjoyed it. Here is the recipe: https://auntieemily.com/baked-portuguese-coconut-chicken/
The page contains step-by-step photos so it’s easy to follow and also tells the interesting backstory of the dish. Happy cooking!

Thank you for that link. After you mentioned this dish the other day, I looked online for recipes and found one and made it. I think that was on Monday night. I used boneless skinless chicken thighs. My recipe was somewhat similar but didn’t have soy sauce. It did include chicken broth, lemon juice and zest. I just used plain rice, though I’m actually offended by the idea of double carbs (potatoes and rice). It came out awfully soupy so really did need the rice to soak up sauce. The chicken in it tasted absolutely delicious, but overall I found the dish too rich, which may just be a reaction I have to sauces that use coconut milk. I am glad to know about it and glad to have tried it.

Interesting that your recipe calls for lemon juice and zest because I didn’t taste any hint of tang when I ordered it in the restaurant! Also it shouldn’t be too runny, just saucy like typical curry consistency? I am going to be very offensive and say serve it with some crusty bread also!🤣🤣

In searching around through samples and decants this week to find items for the CP, I came across Hothouse Flower by Ineke. I should have worn it yesterday! It has guaiac wood and cypress. I’m getting tea and something juicy. On the innocuous side, but nice. My big thrill today will be to visit the Art Supply store to buy some new paints and a couple of new fun tools for my watercolor projects. Our last class included lessons on glazing or overlaying colors and granulation in certain pigments or through the aid of a “granulating fluid.” It creates fascinating effects. Later I also may have to help out a friend who has a cat at the vet. He has pneumonia and a fever, and after the vet checks him at 6 before they close, we may need to take him to a special weekend emergency vet. Poor little guy.

The best show I’ve watched recently was Devil Judge, another Korean show. It’s a serious drama in ways but also a biting contemporary political satire. It features two handsome men and stunning cinematography. There are tragedies and turnarounds. I actually watched it twice.

Art supply stores are so wonderful! I have never done watercolor, but when I have been able to take intro drawing classes (the art museum at University of Rochester has its own school, at which the public can take (paid) classes), the students taking watercolor have convinced me that it is REALLY HARD. Is that what you have found?

I’m not finding it hard but I’ve never tried anything else (except drawing) so it might just be lack of comparison! Also I don’t have high expectations so anything I can do makes me happy!

Hi everyone, today I am testing Iris Medicis from NIcolai, a sample that a friend was kind enough to make for me since I am an iris lover.
BTW, my holy grail is Iris Silver Mist; this one is pretty, but not much iris on my skin. A green, mind galbanum opening, then an elegant, powdery violet that is not too sweet; now some iris hums in the background. The best part to me is the drydown, a very nice musk, and since I am anosmic to most cheap musks, this one must be high quality.
We are having a very mild Fall in northern Italy, so this Nicolai is appropriate now, but I don’t think it is love, for me.

@Robin, it is lovely indeed, but somewhat different from the rest of the Nicolai line. I do not detect much “Patricia” in this one.

It is funny how perfumes can differ on different people. I get at most a hint of violet from it, and only if I concentrate on trying to notice it. Meanwhile, violet is note a good note for me so it tends to jump out and dominate when it is there. For me IM has that green opening, then turns to a velvety, but not powdery, iris with a smooth leather in the background, and dries down to that lovely musk.

In other news, Indigo Perfumery is celebrating its 10th anniversary. 10thbirthdaysale for 20% off online sales; restrictions apply.

I’m at Whole Foods having my usual weekend fish tacos and beverage. The last three times, I feel like the alcohol is either stronger or my alcohol tolerance had diminished. I normally have an alcoholic beverage once a week except when I am out and about with a friend during the week and she orders a glass of wine (only wine) and I would do the same. In any case, not a bad thing to be cautious about drinking. An article in the New York Times mentioned that it is not so much the number of drinks (although that may matter) but what people think a serving size is. I will link to it as a comment as I need to find it first.

I had a acquaintance who justified red wine because “the healthy polyphenols in red wine are strong antioxidants.” I just laughed and said “Why don’t you just eat the grapes and get all the fiber and other benefits, too? That way your liver isn’t dying trying to magically detoxify the wine?” She didn’t like that. 🤷🏻‍♀️
I’m not judging here, as I’ve been know to enjoy adult beverages. If one wants to drink go ahead, but don’t try to make it a “healthy” activity. The fact is any kind of alcohol is toxic in any amount. And I can tell you first hand, it complicates the plan of care for anyone who is hospitalized. Cheers! 🍻

I completely stopped drinking about 8 years ago, right about the time I decided that my clubbing days were over.I can honestly say I don’t miss alcohol at all.
I did however recently buy a bottle of Whispering Angel, just because I’m curious about the hype.To be opened on a really really hot summer’s eve in December…😉✌🏻

So it was actually the Wall Street Journal that had the serving size article:

I am currently down to one beer with a restaurant meal unless it is below 5% ABV. Then I might have two. Otherwise I feel terrible the next day. 🍺

When I was actively counting calories, I measured everything, including alcohol. I am glad that I taught myself what a five-ounce pour of wine looks like in various kinds of glasses — much easier to see when a restaurant or host goes well beyond that, and adjust accordingly.

But yes — my alcohol tolerance gets lower every year. And with all the imperial stouts and other high-ABV beer-type beverages so popular now, I won’t order a beer if I am out UNLESS the ABV is listed.

I stopped drinking alcohol at the start of September, partly to support our son’s desire to reduce his own drinking and partly to start off my retirement without the habit I had developed while working, of having a glass of wine when I got home from work. I truly don’t miss it. I’ve been trying non-alcoholic beers, and have been pleasantly surprised by how good the current ones can be! I don’t like sweet sodas, and I do like Guinness stout, so Guinness Zero has been a great find as well as some others. It seems as if there has been a great improvement and increase in non-alcoholic beer options. I used to drink a couple when I was pregnant or breast-feeding, and those were okay but meh.

There is a “brewery” in CT called Athletic that makes craft-style NA beers. I’ve tried several of them and thought they were quite good. They can ship orders across state lines because it isn’t actually alcohol, so I wonder how many teenagers have ordered it, not realizing it is NA. 😂

The weather is a whole mood today. Gusty winds up to 40mph and dark brooding skies with spits of intermittent rain. By tomorrow night the lows will be down in the 20’s and highs during the day only in the low 40’s so we will be heading south Monday morning.

No wood for me today. Instead I’m in the cheerful and fun CSP Vanille Banane from a travel spray. 🍌

    SOTD is Shalimar MI.

Well, we received winter a little early. Snowing like crazy in South Dakota today. I don’t think it is going to amount to much so that’s a good thing.

Thanks to Hajusuuri for the address to get the COVID-19 test kits. I received my four yesterday. As far as I know I still haven’t contracted the dreaded illness yet, but it is good to have the test kits if needed. I thought I had it last year so was glad to have some handy.

    Wearing CdG Zargorsk.

I had a very busy week at work. It looks like it will be like that until February next year. We are also moving to another building in December, which makes the chaos even worse.

Gorgeous day in NYC today. We are in the 80s and a very sunny day. However, tonight, the temperatures will drop to the low 50s with rain. That is the end of nice, warm temperatures until next year.

I went to the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian earlier this morning, where there were traditional Mexican dances for The Day of the Death. Very beautiful! Now, I am taking a long walk along the East River and planning to have late lunch at Brookfield Place. I am by myself, which is even more relaxing. I will be at home tomorrow resting and warching Halloween movies all day.

    Happy weekend, everyone! 🌞

There wasn’t so much rain as was forecast, this morning was largely dry and sunny but it’s raining this evening.

I’m wearing Philtre, I’m using it so much, to me it’s the best Shalimar flanker and I bet it has more iris than MI, will consider getting a BUB.
This evening it’s A*Men Pure Tonka, another favorite, I hate what happened to Mugler’s men line, I have 3 A*Men including a bottle of Vintage Angel Men as it was called, I wish I had them all, Havane, Coffee, they were all so good.

Now that I have installed part of my collection of perfumes in one of my wardrobes, I have half a shelf empty still, but I had a severe talk with myself and I don’t intend to purchase left and right to fill that space, I’ve had two buys in the last two months so I’m within my low-buy limit and hope to keep it this way.

I am wearing Iunx L’Arbre this morning. It’s a sunny, cold day (low of 25F this morning) and I am still doing outdoor clean up. I hope this is the last other than raking leaves, but as soon as the rains start in fall the moss starts to grow and it is a constant battle to keep it under control. Sometimes I think Deva has the right idea, wintering in the Southwest, but then she posts video of huge spiders and I think, “I will take the moss, thank you!”

Been busy with an online class, but today I received my sample set of the new Guerlain Art et Matière extraits. They are all nice but overpriced. My favorites are tonka and iris. Looking forward to trying Fève Gourmande (the new incarnation of Gourmand Coquin) in December.

What did you think of the vanilla please?

Most all reviews I have read have said of course they are overpriced but they also don’t have the oomph/meet expectations.

Did you try Hush Hush btw? I somehow was unaware of this one but was curious which version you liked best and which has the most vanilla if you tried them. eheheh I watched some videos online and think maybe the EDP might have the most vanilla.

It’s not sweet, more like pure vanilla bean smell. I have only tested it briefly with one small spray, will give it a full wearing tomorrow. But aside from the rose & bergamot, they are not loud scents, they wear very close to the skin. Supposedly they are 30% concentration.

As for Hush Hush, because it is a crowdfunding project you are by definition buying blind. I ordered all three concentrations but have no idea what they smell like. You can read the notes on the indiegogo site. Only the edt will be launched commercially, so if you want to blind buy, keep that in mind.

I’ve been chasing comfort scents for days, and my two choices today were Memoirs (pre-shower) and Tam Dao (post-shower). Can’t seem to get it exactly right — whoever said that marriage is hard was right on the money (long story). Maybe tomorrow I’ll go with my go-to combo of Profumum Alba over Le Dix dusting powder. THAT should get the job done!

    Hi, everyone.
Wearing Memoirs of a Trespasser for warmth today, it’s raining and chilly.
Yesterday I wore my new dress to an event where there were lots of people I haven’t seen since the before times. I keep saying that I’m losing weight to lower my blood sugar and help my joints, but I’m only human, it’s nice to be smaller and feel better. Not one person said one word! My husband has also lost weight and he got three compliments grr. Not that it’s a competition, lol, but some feedback would have been nice.

And today all the newspapers are about where we went wrong. The NZ women’s team played in town in Saturday and the mood was much happier . Anyway, there’s always next time!

It’s a beautiful morning , the first in a while and I have just watched the moon sink behind the hills. It is so peaceful. I spent an hour in the art gallery yesterday, my weekly treat. For such a small place we have a great collection. I have become a bit obsessed with looking at brushstrokes and trying to figure out how to paint foliage, standing so close that my nose almost rubs the paint off . Wearing La Vierge de Fer and off for a Covid booster ( my 4th booster, which seems a lot but there’s a growth in cases now that mandatory 7-day isolation has stopped)

Feeling a bit gloomy as it’s time to bring in the 5-+ foot tall giant pots of tropical plants until May! (Jasmin, Norfolk Island Pine and podocarpus.) SotD Five Stars’ Royal Secret. It was in my Mother’s things when she passed away. A lovely galbanum lingers. However, I associate her with Diorissimo or Shalimar. She may have told me it was her Mother who like Royal Secret, so she bought some to be reminded of her. Grandma had several trinket boxes which were from RS gift sets. But then, Mom also said Grandma like Wind Song. I was only just falling down the rabbit hole then, so I don’t know if either had a favorite!

Worked this weekend but so happy to wrap up early on this Sunday. Of course, there are lots of home tasks to be done as well.

Yesterday I wore Henry and Rose Sheep’s Clothing with overlay of Solinotes Rose, nice but faded so fast. Today I went the opposite way with Bulgari Black and no longevity issues there! I looked to see if Bulgari Black is still available and it seems the prices went up about 4x. My bottle should last a while.

Nice and mild weather today in the high 70’s but will be in the 40’s by tomorrow. My perfume choices this weekend reflect the upcoming weather change.

A little shell-shocked at this point in the weekend. We had 14 showings this weekend; 8 yesterday and 6 today. So very fatigued after all that.

I lucked out and picked up some truly delicious locally-made chocolate covered caramels at the county farmers market yesterday. If anyone is interested, the chocolatier was Mecha Chocolate. https://mechachocolate.com

These caramels weren’t very sticky. One pack were salted caramels, and the other were botanicals/herbs with honey.

Wow! That’s alot of showings! I’m sure with all the hard work put into it that it will sell quickly. I hope you get multiple offers.

That chocolate sounds divine; I’d keep it for myself too..

Thanks Gail. Right now I just want to sit quietly and not have to think or do anything for a little bit.

That is exhausting, I’m glad you have the caramels for strength! Hope the house sells soon, and that you get some quiet time.

Enjoying these sunny last days of October! I’ve been very crafty for the last couple of weeks: I have a new goddaughter who will be christened next weekend in New England, so I made her a bonnet out of lace and fabric from her grandmother’s wedding dress. It’s very pretty, and it was a perfect, simple project for me to get reacquainted with my sewing machine. I also decorated a birdhouse for our church’s Habitat for Humanity fundraiser, and I got a bit carried away, lol! I’m enjoying having time for my little projects and my garden, as well as my family. Looking forward to seeing my sisters, their families, and my cousins next weekend for the christening!
