It's Friday and the World Day for Audiovisual Heritage. Birthdays: Joe Medicine Crow, Dylan Thomas, Ruby Dee, Roy Lichtenstein, Sylvia Plath, John Cleese, Maxine Hong Kingston, Fran Lebowitz. Our community project for today is specialty woods... wear a perfume with guaiac, cypress, oak, or some other specialty wood note we haven't already done (so far, we've covered oud, sandalwood, cedar and evergreens).
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm doing oak, in a little dab of Serge Lutens Chêne.
Reminder: on 11/3, we're off to Japan (just in time for Culture Day). Wear a perfume that is named for a place in Japan, or that reminds you of a (real or imaginary) trip to Japan, or that features a Japanese ingredient, or ?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I have only glanced this week, but I had already planned my CP scent. I can only wear this when working from home, since it’s strong on me. SSS Winter Woods. Two specialty woods are birch and guaiac.
I bought this quite a long time ago and rarely wear it. It’s almost too winter woods for me. I should experiment today and throw a bit of Baiser de Russie on top. Add some pine and floral. See what happens…..
And it’s good for today. They’ve transported my home in NE WI to the PNW. Rain for days…all week. Hopefully the forecast is right and no rain on Sunday. We are heading down to Lambeau for Packers-Vikings. I fear a long, grumbly ride home.
Scent twins here! I personally find Winter Woods quite wearable even in warm-ish weather. The one I find that I can only wear in the cold is Champagne de Bois. As much as I love CdB, it can smother me on a warm day, unless I am very sparing in my application. Even one spritz can be too much.
Fingers crossed for Sunday!
Yep, thought about Winter Woods, but it’s strong on me, too; I will probably go another direction after my shower.
Hope Sunday will be rain-free.
You smell good! I love guaiac wood and forgot I have a travel spray of this. Will definitely pull this out soon because our cold weather is just around the corner.
You smell wonderful. I’ll wear that tomorrow. Hope the game is fun – go Pack go!
Hope you get a break from the wet on Sunday!
Still a little jetlagged from the trip and sore from the vaccines, so I couldn’t be bothered to figure out what wood-heavy scents I might have in my collection: I took the easy route and splashed on some Demeter Mahogany. I don’t think I could identify freshly sawn mahogany, but the Demeter version is an appealing dark wood with a little spiciness to it. Unsurprisingly no durability but this one in particular I wish lasted longer: you’d think a wood scent would.
Today I unboxed the second of the three SL room sprays I recently got, Mesk El-Laïl, a.k.a. “the Arabian one”, and Jim’s verdict is “Grandma’s closet”. It is big and rosy up top, reminiscent of Lutens’ Sa Majesté La Rose, until it darkens and sweetens: I haven’t seen it to the end yet (La Dame de Heian took hours to reach its final form) but I like it a lot so far.
Tried that Fresh Peach toothpaste from Germany, Robin. It does smell peachy, but mostly what you get is mint, and those two things are a mildly strange combination (although some people do dress a peach salad with mint). And it looks pallid and strange, a ghostly translucent white, neither gel nor paste. It’s a whole experience, I’ll give it that.
Demeter Mahogany is a perfect choice!
Thanks so much for the toothpaste report. Really Marvis is the most consistently good and I don’t know why I am so anxious to branch out, it’s not like I run out of toothpaste.
FOMO? I always wonder if there’s something even better than Marvis out there, and I love trying new things anyway. (I got ten different Breath Library toothpastes when I was in Japan, espresso and rose and blueberry and….) But I’ve never found anything that comes close to Marvis Amarelli Licorice.
I guess that’s all it is…fomo.
Have you tried any of the Buly toothpastes? Great packaging
https://buly1803.com/en/collections/dentifrices
No, and now I can’t remember why…
Has anyone suggested an imported toothpaste community project (side project)? If so, I may have missed the suggestion. If not, I’m here for it!
I think we are not a big enough subset to get much of a project going!
I planned to wear Memoirs of a Trespasser today for guaiacwood and oak, but it’s another unseasonably warm day (not that I’m complaining!) so I picked Hermes Un Jardin Sur le Nil for sycamore. It’s been great to wear my beloved Birkenstocks with bare feet this week but we’re expecting a 30 degree temperature drop overnight, so I’ll put them away till spring. Have a great Friday, everyone!
Same weather here, so I will twins with you.
We’re expecting a record high…77.
Wonderful, enjoy.
Do you ever wear your Birkies with socks?
Definitely! But there’s a point where they just aren’t warm enough.
Hermann A Mes Cotes For me today for the pepperwood. Love this!
I guess pepperwood is a bay laurel? Anyway, points!
It is also known as hercules club, or Southern Prickly Ash. I think it can depend on it’s size to be described as either a shrub or a tree.
I am in SSS Winter Woods which has guaiacwood and birch (along with sandalwood and cedar, which don’t count for the CP). Despite its name, I don’t find it overwhelming on this warm, humid October day. We are expected to be in the high 80s this weekend, with a major cooldown Sunday night, and highs only in the 50s Monday and Tuesday. Typical fall weather in Texas!
Enjoy your last few days of heat 50_Roses! Although I suppose they’ll be back soon enough 🙂
Oh, it probably won’t be our last warm days. We never really stay cold for long. Our typical “winter” pattern is a cold front followed by a few chilly days, then a warm up, then another cold front, and so on until spring. We have had it be 80+ degrees, complete with mosquitoes, on New Year’s Day before. I’ll be happy if we are just done with the 90’s until at least April.
SSS has quite a few perfumes I enjoy. Been a while since I have pulled out my travel sprays , though.
Hello and tgif!
Sotd is Penhaligon’s Vra Vra Vroom. It contains “georgywood” and it’s my first time hearing about it.
I am also testing out Eau de Audacity from the same collection. This is one creamy and smooth vanilla. My favourite of the 5 creations. Nothing audacious about it though!
… which, I suppose, you would find as the natural undergrowth in a primeval akigalawood forest 😛
LOL…excellent.
So none of them are an absolute must-try?
I am afraid so…
I’ve been waiting all week to wear Chipmunk. It’s all nuts and woods on me, and the notes say it has oak, balsam fir, cedar, guaiac wood, and amyris. It’s supposed to be cold and sunny today, so I will bundle up and walk before I shower and go for a mammogram.
Hope it is over before you know it foxbins!
Fingers crossed everything is OK with your mammo!
Lots of good smelling woods scents! In grade 11 the shop teacher was also our physics teacher-he always smelled like cedar and it was a scent that really suited him.
I’m not in a woods scent: my bottle of L’artisan Piment Brulant arrived, and I wanted to try it. All the reviews are spot on, but it’s way more subtle than I imagined. I like it, I cannot smell the chocolate, and it’s very close to the skin. It’s in the older style bottle, too, which I like-I enjoy the ribbons of colour on each bottle and helps me keep all the scents straight.
Hope we all get to ease into the weekend with very little chaos 🙂
You smell great Carole, and boy, I hope so too!
My CP scent is Essential Parfums Bois Impérial which has akigalawood, but now that I have checked the brand’s website I’m not sure it qualifies, since it’s a “natural ingredient upcycled from Patchouli through a biotechnology process”.
It’s a tad too masculine for me, but it’s not unpleasant.
There is something really comical about “a biotechnology process”, don’t know why.
Wearing PG Indochine today. It has tanakha wood, which is actually a ground bark used as makeup and cosmetics.
smelling great, Glannys!
Indochine is lovely, you smell as good as I did a couple of days ago!
I’m doing oak also for the CP. I layered Jo Malone English Oak & Hazelnut and English Oak & Redcurrent together. The latter is discontinued and of course as luck has it is my favorite of the two. My bottle after years is still good though, for now.
Jo Malone does occasionally bring back past scents, so you might get lucky…
Pretty sure I’m going to go with Wode today, for black hemlock and guaiacwood. I have my flu/COVID vaccine appointment this morning, so I think I’ll need to stay away from some of the other scents I was thinking of (Apoteker Tepe The Holy Mountain, La Curie Incendo).
Good luck with those shots!
Wearing CdG Kyoto for the cedar today. It was either Kyoto or Epic today but didn’t want something so heavy today.
I thought about Epic for today too but didn’t want such a heavy hitter.
PSA: 20% off $100 at Beautyhabit, FALLFF
Ooooh, tempting.
I had planned to wear Encre Noire today, for cypress … but it turns out there are about a dozen perfumes on my shelf that have a cypress note (Azemour, Tam Dao, Kyoto, Wazamba, Eau d’Hadrien, etc). And since our temperature has dropped into the 30s (!) I really wanted something soft and warm, and right there on the list was Caleche — perfect!
Oh, you smell great!
I chose Sugi from CdG’s Monocle Scent series for another cypress note.
That is such a great series.
You smell fantastic.
Reached into the depths of vintage for Diorama, which evidently contains Virginia cedar.
Did you see the recent announcements on Fragrantica about the re-release of No 19 and Cristalle? Also yesterday, they announced the upcoming release of Guerlain’s line of extraits in the L’Art
& Matiere line…at 550 eur apop.
Gulp😬
I really wish Guerlain would release a coffret of 1 mL samples of the entire extract collection.
IMO you are an expert on No 19, so I’m looking forward to hearing your take on the re-released version
550 euro is pocket change. 🤣
Every last one will smell fabulous.
Yikes. 😨
Happy Friday from a clear, sunny and cold Seattle!
Wearing La Curie Ossuary, one of my favorite irises and a palo santo to boot.
Please email me if you put a dibs on my splits. My packing materials are spread all over the house and I’d love to get the last couple splits mailed out this weekend. Thank you! 😊🙏
Good luck!
I had planned to wear SL Chêne, but have ended up in Paris YSL somehow. I’m sure John Cleese would approve!
If you are wearing perfume again Robin, does that mean you are feeling better? Love your choice of image today!
Feeling nearly normal, thanks! Still have an occasional cough, it will go away I’m sure.
Scent: Philosykos, with fig wood! I’m very happy with it.
Other, but not totally compliant: CDG Hinoki & Aesop Hwyl
Tea: Upton Silver Sprout Green. Very smoky.
Kitten update: the 4 pound dude (Sir Archie Thunder Paws) makes an absurd amount of noise when he runs. He just dashed through the room. It’s a good thing he doesn’t have to actually hunt for food.
Happy Friday!
Sir Archie Thunder Paws is a fantastic name for a kitty! 😂
Oh yes!
Thirding this!
😻
Love the sound of cats running. They are surprisingly loud for such small beings.
Love the name.
National Black Cat Day today, too
Black Cashmere has wenge wood if I remember correctly so I’m in that. Denver is expected to get several inches of snow this weekend so a warm cozy scent is a good idea
You smell wonderful, thegoddessrena.
Welcome to October in Colorado! T-shirts one day, snow shovels the next.
Why bother with snow shovels? It will just get sunny the next day and melt some of it
Some places do fine homeowners if they don’t shovel snow 24 hours after a significant snow event.
Good morning!
I’m in Coromandel today, not sure if it qualifies for CP, but the folding screens they were named after should be made of wood 🙂
Lots of perfume news today!
Guerlain drops a series of extraits: https://www.fragrantica.com/news/Guerlain-L-Art-et-la-Matiere-Les-Extraits-19151.html
and Chanel refreshes Cristalle and No 19 EDT. Curious to smell how they are different! I enjoy Cristalle but it feels a little dated at times, wondering if the new iteration is modernized.
Those new Guerlain extraits have my lemmings twirling in the cage! Are you all moved and settled, as well as smelling great?
It looks like a reformulation of Cristalle. I want it anyway though. Lol.
I hope Chanel didn’t mess with No. 19EdT too much.
I’m in Regime des Fleur’s Falling Trees today for the oak note and because I love it but haven’t worn it in a while.
Already on my second pot of F&M Prince of Wales tea. This one is particularly moreish.
The warm spell here in NJ is unnerving but I am happy to have another night or two where we can have dinner outside and sit around the fire pit.
Fear not, Autumn will be back with a vengeance for Halloween.
We had snow on and off all yesterday but today it’s just cold and murky, and a bit uninspiring. I’m wearing Sycamore – more for the name than the cypress/ woody notes. I guess four trees gave me the most pleasure as a kid: chestnuts for the game of conkers, eucalyptus for gum nuts – the scent and making little people, oaks for trying to grow a tree from acorns, and sycamores for playing ‘ helicopters’ with the seeds…especially if you could drop them off a bridge.
We had a mulberry tree in our yard when I was a kid, that was great fun, and MESSY.
SOTD = Hinoki in Hinoki
I thought hinoki was a mushroom but upon looking it up, it’s actually cypress! The juice is a gorgeous green.
https://www.instagram.com/p/Cy6RNmTu7tW/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
I had lunch yesterday at a Colombian place nearby. It may be the first time I’ve had a meal at a Colombian restaurant. At the proverbial end of the day, I had skirt steak, rice and tostones (flattened plantain), washed down with a can of Coke. I didn’t bother looking at the menu so was a little surprised at the total although it wasn’t exhorbitant but I should have known better! I got another 1.5 meals out of the leftovers so that made it more palatable.
Lots of sales going on now. The one I will leverage is for Sephora Rouge members at 20% off.
As to the Splitmeet, I have one 5 mL spot left for Tauer Nexin and two 5 mL spots for Diane St. Claire Call Me; the rest are still wide open.
When hajusuuri’s Nexin split is complete, I also have a bottle of Nexin and can offer 25 mL in splits.
So kind of you!
I’m only seeing Beauty habit, is BG having their event? Has Roja given up on me?
The BG event was in August / September. It changes a little bit each year.
That IS a beautiful green color! Looks like a peridot gemstone.
Banana, apples (1 Gala, 1 Cox) and yogurt smoothie
This morning I went straight for Maderas de Oriente, the notes I found don’t mention woods, but Basenotes wearers mention Mysore sandalwood and I agree but doesn’t count for the CP, the perfume sure smells great. Tonight for the CP it’s YR Nature Millénaire with ‘woody aromas’ a little vague but it will have to do.
Maderas de Oriente sounds gorgeous.
Yes, it’s a little gem. Mine is vintage, it might still be available in Spain but of course it would not be Mysore sandalwood anymore.
PG Indochine today!
smelling great, Deva!
Indochine is lovely, isn’t it!
No 1 on my desert island.
It’s back in the mid 80s here in Carolina. I chose Eau d’ Hadrien for cypress over what I had originally planned to wear, Nue Functional Fragrance (palo santo)
Enjoy the heat wave Ms Tar Heel!
Wearing A Lab on Fire Freckled and Beautiful. Very pleasant but not earth-shattering for me.
All clear at my derm appt yesterday for total skin check. Happy to receive that news as I have had other visits that were not such good news. On the way home I did a walk-in visit to a pharmacy and got the COVID booster and the RSV vaccine (primarily for new grandson). I feel very vaccinated – got flu and pneumonia vaccines a month ago! And yes, today I am quite achy, but I am on the couch with a cozy blanket and a couple of good books to get me through.
Yay for a good report! I finally got the very fair-skinned Mr. Mossy to do a check and he had a couple places zapped but all is well too.
Yay!
Glad to hear that you got good news at your dermatologist appt!
Your cozy blanket and books sound like an excellent vaccine management plan😊
Another thoroughly non-woody day, this time in Carnal Flower. I’m wearing a very practical polo sweater and cords, and feel like I should change into a cashmere-and-feathers ballgown to match my fragrance…
Simply gorgeous!
I’m joining Robin today in a dab of Chene. I’m so happy to get to try this, thanks to a generous NSTer. I can’t pinpoint the exact notes or accords, but it really does remind me, in the best way, of other woody Lutens scents.
Hey twin!
In SJP’s Stash for the Massoia bark and Atlas Cedar–per Fragrantica. It’s a bombastic perfume, not shy in the least! Safe for working alone at home though 😁
Speaking of SJP, we watched the last episode of Only Murders in the Building season 3 last night. What ridiculous fun! (SJP cuz of Matthew Broderick)
House twin! And you smell wonderful, but I think I like Covet a smidge better than Stash. Both are frequently worn Chez-Mossy.
I heard Season 3 was fun…I did not love Season 2 but should start again.
I’m still smelling of Anthem, one of the Manos Gerakinis samples I got when I bought Sillage Royal. Anthem has the usual suspects of oud and sandalwood, so no points there.
Later this morning, I’m going to World, my local perfumery, to try the new Arquiste – L’Or de Louis. I raced in to try it on a sample strip at Thursday lunchtime, it seems like a nice orange blossom and I’m keen to sniff it thoroughly. Indigo Smoke is also back in stock, and I want to try that again.
It often takes a long time for new things to reach New Zealand, but World seems to have a relationship with Arquiste, they even had Carlos Huber in store to launch Sidney Rock Pool a few years ago.
Oops, auto-correct. I’d hate my Australian neighbours to think I didn’t know how to spell Sydney 🙂
Gaynor, do report back, that one sounds really nice.
I have a blanket across my knees this morning at my laptop.
SOTD is Heretic Dirty Hinoki.
Chilly?
Unseasonably warm here which suits Atelier Mistral Patchouli nicely. Claiming sorta kinda CP points for the benzoin note since it’s a tree resin.
Close enough!
AA Herba Fresca for a scorcher of a day!
Happy Weekend!
XO’s
Bet you’re happy with the return of the heat!
Robin, glad to see you’re feeling a bit better and well enough to wear a bit of fragrance.🤗
My favorite fall scents include woods, spice, and perhaps a bit of smoke. For today’s cp, I chose one of my favorite fragrances from Dame Perfumery, Dark Horse. Cinnamon and cloves spice up the smoky guaiac wood in the base.❤️
We were surprisingly blessed on our mini-fall foliage 🍁🍂trip early this week. Despite a constantly changing weather forecast that indicated clouds and rain, we enjoyed 2 glorious days of warm 🌞 to enjoy outdoors. Visited my favorite state park, Apple River Canyon (for its peace and zen and colors!), the charming river town of Galena, and discovered a true hidden gem in Dubuque, the Dubuque Arboretum and Botanical Gardens (it’s free and beautifully maintained by 300 volunteers w/o paid staff). I highly recommend if you’re ever in the N.E. corner of IL/N.W. corner of IA. 👍
Sticking close to home this weekend, need to finish putting summer clothes away and getting out the warm stuff – cold weather coming this weekend, maybe even a bit of ❄️ late on Halloween.
Happy weekend to all 🎃
That sounds like a lovely trip! And I am impressed that any place is run solely by 300 (!) volunteers, that’s an amazing effort.
Glad you’ve powered through your bout with Covid, Robin. For the CP win, with a fragrant wave to you, SJP Covet. I do get the teak note Fragrantica lists, along with the lemon-lavender-chocolate-musk panolply. Perfect for an unseasonably and even record-warm fall day: 77F! My last green tomatoes love this for becoming ripe enough to pick, and I see another quart of good sauce in my freezer.
One year my Dad uprooted our tomato plants that were covered in green tomatoes and hung them upside down in our garage. We were able to pick tasty ripe tomatoes that way until December.
Hmm…I’ve heard of something similar! Thanks for letting me know.
What a great idea. I’ll try that next year.
Teak! I have a bottle of Covet thanks to a lovely NST poster. I’ll look for teak next time.
Yep, you smell great!
I feel like being incredibly stupid and wasting money on the BH sale. Hajusuuri has tempted me with Tempo for a while now.
I don’t need any more. The Dyptique lotions look good?
Retail therapy, please.
Tempo tempts me too – I’ve still got two samples to “tink” but after that…
Tempo has been one of two things from Diptyque that have interested me.
I am accidentally CP compliant because I was testing Coqui Coqui Eucaced for a potential swap. It is…eucalyptus, but not in the overpowering eucalypt medicinal balm way, more an herbal tropical breeze rustling through the pale green silver leaves at sundown. The brand is based in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, one of my fave places and where my mother-in-law was born.
Kevin loves that brand 🙂
Posting late today. It’s been a couple of frantic days for me. Yesterday was loads of errands outside the house. Plus touch up painting in various spots inside the house.
Today I was desperately cleaning for the photographer who came to take pictures of our house for the real estate listing. I have still more cleaning and tidying to do, though.
SOTD = Tom Ford Oud Wood, from the sample stash. In addition to oud and sandalwood, Fragrantica also lists Brazilian rosewood. So I am covered for several CPs!
You smell good! Lots of luck on the listing.
Thanks! I’ve been eyeing a travel spray of it for ages now. I should ignore the Sephora sale that’s coming up…
I hope it all goes well Jalapeno!
Thank you lillyjo! This weekend is gonna be nuts.
Jalapeno, I somehow didn’t realize that all your house projects were toward selling. I’ve probably missed too many posts. Anyway, been there and I know it’s lots of work. Best of luck with that!
Thanks springpansy.
You might have also missed the post about me and Mr. Jalapeno going our separate ways. That’s the big push for selling.
Oh no, I did miss that. So sorry to hear that. I’ll modify my original statement to “best of luck with everything.”
Appreciate all the well wishes.
I’ll be headed towards some of your old stomping grounds, or at least a county or two away.
Do you have a move date yet Jalapeno, or are you staying until the house sells?
I’m staying until the house sells. So, no move date yet.
Gotcha.
Exciting news about your house. Good luck with the listing, I bet the house looks great with the retouchings you made.
Thanks Aurora. Still have more touchups to do. I will try to get them done on days we don’t have any showings.
Bon courage for the house sale!
I’m in a melange of specialty woods (mahogany, oak, and guaic wood) and cacao, among other notes, with Slumberhouse Ore from a sample. This is so good – delicious and comforting. I need to do a test of a bunch of different chocolate/woods perfumes to try and pick a favorite.
I wanted to wear Strange Invisible Perfumes Essence of X, with its gorgeous oak note, but when I opened the box where I thought it would be, I saw Ayala Moriel’s Hinoki on top and went for it. It’s a beautiful blend of hinoki, cedar, oud and jatamansi, but to my nose, hinoki is the dominant note. Popular choice of note today!
Currently sampling Piano Tuner from Pomare’s Stolen Perfume which has redwood in several forms in it so I guess it also qualifies for the project
I am wearing Shalimar MI today.
It’s pretty faint now. I’m working late tonight and early tomorrow. Hopefully I can fall asleep quickly tonight.
Oh yuck. That’s a rough schedule.
How courageous about working late and early. How do you like Salimar MI? I decided not to get it (I have the two others).
I do like but it is pretty short lived. It feels more like a spring perfume to me.
Like Oakland Fresca, I wore SJP Stash for the Massoia.
I really like wood scents but a lot of the ones I have are woods that were already featured and thus excluded this go-around. Runner up for me was Kyoto.
Mon Precieux Nectar today, has guacamole wood -guaicic wood- is it right this time??? so I am with the CP today YYay! Adorable hubby came thru the operation fine, but had a pain reaction to an anti nausea med, so they gave him heavy opinion derivatives of various sorts which depressed his breathing for a while, which is better now, shut down fis digestive system, so they had to pump his stomach and it goes on and on, hooked up to too many machines so he’s not walking enough, da duh, da duh sigh… poor guy. We both tried to warn the surgeon he might have weird reactions to drugs. It will get sorted out. He is not a particularly good patient, and when I am here I have to remind him to be kind to all the people who are watching his blood pressure and all his other vitals. But he is clearly better. Sorry to be venting here.
I’m glad hubby is better but what you’re both going thru sounds excruciating. Sending positive energies and wishes your way for a full recovery soon for him and strength for you both to see this through. Don’t apologize for venting, we are all here for you.🤗
That is so kind of you, thank you. I think I got a lot of tough it out, don’t be a whiner messages when I was a kid!
Wow, rough go for your poor husband! Hoping he feels better very soon and the surgery was successful.
The surgery was good, he is have atypical reactions to medications…I can see he is slowly settling down, but I am wound up and exhausted! Here I am, looking at email in the middle of the night! Thanks for the support, I am going go sedate myself with milk and cookies and go to bed!
