It’s Wednesday and the swapmeet is still open for business! Also, National Chocolate Milk Day and World Tourism Day. What fragrance are you wearing?
Diana Vreeland said "Fashion must be the most intoxicating release from the banality of the world", to which I would answer that Arielle Shoshana Saturday is doing about the same for me today, and with considerably less expense and bother.
Reminder: 9/29 is Diana Vreeland's birthday. Wear one of her favorite perfumes (reportedly YSL Opium and Chanel No. 5), or wear something equally bold, or wear something from her posthumous perfume line, or take inspiration from a Diana Vreeland quote (more here), or ?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Hello.
Sotd is TF Cafe Rose.
I have been browsing all the advent calendars and the one from Jo Malone has some nice stuff in there! I see that it’s available in the UK already. Mayyyybe it’s time to visit my local shop and ask when it will be in stock…
good luck!
How do you like Cafe Rose? I have seen mixed reviews. I sampled it in Sephora and found it to be nice, but didn’t know if I needed to add to my collection.
I personally quite like this. It’s very much a rose fragrance and I don’t smell any coffee, but I happen to really like roses so it’s okay. The rose is also a velvety type so it’s deeper and more plush imo.
Thanks. I may have to try it again.
Thank you for inspiring me to get a bottle of Leather Jardin. I love a good Chypre and especially one at this price! It’s also a perfect fall transition fragrance.
I am so happy that you like it too! 🙂
I just got my bottle in the mail today! It’ll be a while before I can try it as I’m in Ummagumma right now…
Fun! Did you find your bottle IRL? My local Zara didn’t have it, and it’s not online.
Couldn’t find it IRL but I got my bottle and a bottle of one of the Olivia Giacobettis online.
Maybe you got the last one! 😄
IDK, I got it on the Canadian site and they sent it from a suburb of my city, so clearly they had *some* around even if they weren’t stocking them in stores…
For perspective, I’ve desperately wanted to restock my trusty face powder (Laura Mercier) recently, and both Canadian Sephora and the Laura Mercier site are sold out. Yet…U.S. Sephora has it and U.S. Laura Mercier has it on sale (so I bought two and had them sent to a relative). In other words, we almost never have things in stock in Canada that aren’t in stock in the U.S. 🙂
I got mine on evil bay
💡
Can’t believe this didn’t occur to me.
so excited for advent calendar season! cant wait to see what Diptyque and Guerlain do this year.
(Sticks fingers in ears. La la la I can’t hear you) I’m doing my best to ignore all the perfume/beauty product/scented anything advent calendars. I need to weed out and use up what I already have before I acquire more. I really do enjoy an advent calendar with little treats in it, and I have had the l’Occitane and Yves Rocher calendars before. I don’t need more perfume, skincare, tea, or candles, I don’t need a lot of sugar, and I don’t need more trinkets to clutter up the house, so I am on the lookout for an advent calendar that is none of the above, but still fun. So far, I have found escape game advent calendars and jigsaw puzzle advent calendars. If anyone knows of any others, I would appreciate it. I saw a cheese advent calendar in the grocery store last year, but it wasn’t 24 different cheeses, it was something like 4 pieces of six kinds, so a lot of repetition.
In Germany they had beer advent calendars and fun toy / magic advent calendars. (I think I’ve seen beer advent calendars here, too.)
… quite a few alcoholic advent calendars, if you judge by what Costco will. E carrying at some point in the not too distant future. I say we’ve clearly lost the “advent” concept.
I’ve seen beer and whiskey advent calendars. I’d really like an old-fashioned type advent calendar too–the kind where you open a window each day to reveal a picture. The best ones seem to be from Germany. I will probably have to order one online, since I never see them in any of the stores around here.
I would love a magic advent calendar!
I just came back from Costco. I got myself a Lego advent calendar – the Marvel version. I may have been in a fit of being Instagram-marketed. It is possible I may return it…
Finally-the sun has shown herself.
Iris Ganache SOTD
This is a scent that has grown on me.
You smell fabulous!
I am still wondering why they discontinued this one..
Boucheron Trouble today. Wildly misnamed, as it’s very placid and soothing.
Wildly misnamed is more common than not, right?
Right!
I am in Apres l’Ondee extrait this morning, and thinking it is one of the most beautiful things ever created.
House twins!
which one are you wearing?
Iris Ganache- it’s discontinued. It was definitely not love at first smell for me, but the more I wear it the more I really appreciate this scent
Do you have a FB, or at least a good sized decant? The most frustrating thing with perfume is to finally decide that you love something enough to get a FB, only to find that it is no longer available. As quickly as stuff gets discontinued these days, it seems that by the time I get a chance to sniff something, it is gone. I have had it happen that I sniffed something at a perfume counter, and decided I wanted it, only to be told that they had no more bottles. If they don’t have any bottles for sale, TAKE THE TESTER OFF THE COUNTER! OK, rant over.
No- I got a decant in a split on NST
House triplets!
Yes it is!
I’m wearing Grey Flannel today. The bottle has been lost in my box of bottles, but I finally found it. Yay!
Yay for found bottles!
I have found several “lost” things as I have been going through all my perfumes.
I’m wearing Mitzah and trying to psych myself up to wash the windows. DH is flying back from Germany today sick with the flu so I am evacuating this evening before he arrives to a friend’s house until the coast is clear. He promised me he would wear his N95 mask all the way home. But this is the last time he flies internationally while I am around. Last time he brought back a respiratory virus that laid me low for nearly 6 weeks. Flying sucks.
I hope he gets better soon and that you don’t catch it!
A coworker came in the other day coughing up a storm. I told her to stay the heck away from me.
He will only be here until Saturday morning when he leaves to drive back to the US, so I will come home after he leaves and fumigate. LOL. I told him to leave all the windows open and the fans running.
Good luck!
I hope he gets better soon. I haven’t flown since March 13, 2020.
Oh yuck. What a bummer. I hope you don’t catch his crud either.
Ugh! But good plan on leaving until your hubby goes back; hope he has a safe journey. And that you remain healthy!
When are you heading down?
I’m wearing Satellite Padparadscha, one I love pulling out every autumn.
A cool rainy day here, at last. My day off, I’m spending it in domestic duties like my laundry mountain range (not just one mountain) and fixing stuffed peppers for dinner. I do love a day at home.
I love a day at home too, and this is perfect weather for it.
I understand the laundry mountain range. I’m retired now, and one of the perks is being able to keep up with laundry so it never exceeds a small hill. OTOH, I have been trying to declutter my house, so I have had Mt. Trashmore at the curb more than once.
Yes, that’s one thing nice about retirement. I keep up with the laundry too. My husband and I are kind of neat freaks anyway, so I guess we probably kept it done on a regular basis to begin with, but now we have no excuse NOT to get things done.
Lol at Mount Trashmore 😂
An old cult classic! You smell great.
Padparadscha! Boy, does that bring back memories. ❤️ It also reminds me of a friend to whom I gave my bottle. She ended up liking it more than I did.
Love your “laundry mountain range.” 😄 Stealing this!
Same! Mountains!
BIG thumbs up to both “Mt. Trashmore” and “laundry mountain range”. Although it sucks to be dealing with that much dirty clothing and linens!
Just need to fold the towels when they’re dry. It feels so good to have everything clean and put away.
Wearing Guerlain Habit Rouge EdP. It is named after a red article of clothing and
1) Vreeland loved red
2) She was a consultant to the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
“Red is the great clarifier – bright and revealing. I can’t imagine becoming bored with red – it would be like becoming bored with the person you love.”
Perfect choice!
Since the weekend’s 3 perfumes poll, I’ve been in Lea.
I slept horribly Monday night then had a not so great day yesterday, but slept like a rock last night! It felt great. Hopefully that means a better day today. It’s been rainy and gloomy. I’m hoping it clears enough for a lunchtime walk.
My older daughter is on her way to the twin cities tonight to see The Psychedelic Furs and Squeeze. I’m more than a little jealous, but alas I have the responsibilities of middle life that prevent me from just picking up and going. Oh well, I hope she has the best time. I forewarned her that the crowd may be gen x heavy. Lol.
Oh man! I didn’t even know Squeeze was still together. I hope she has a great time!
Me neither! We were watching videos on YouTube last night. I have total fomo.😩😂
Squee for Squeeze! I would love to see them.
I saw a concert a few years ago, and it was a mashup of players. I didn’t know that the keyboardist/vocalist from Squeeze was there until he played the opening organ riff from “Tempted.” 🤩
Fun! They have a lot of great songs.
YAY for a great night’s sleep!
It was heaven.😴
Sotm is Zara/Jo Malone Leather Jardin. I’m not doing very well on the Diana Vreeland front this week, at least intentionally but I love reading all of the comments and inspired fragrance choices. The documentary about her was fabulous💃
I don’t see DV as a “join in” sort of person so maybe you ARE participating 😉
Oh, I like that interpretation😊
SOTD is MI Shalimar.
Book of the Day is Jackal by Erin Adams.
Shalimar and books- my fav combo
Scent: Following Robin’s lead with Saturday. This stuff is a good antidote to a cloudy day, should you need one.
Stuff I’m thinking about:
-Decluttering, the ever-present job.
-All-cotton jeans – do they still exist?
-Kittens are a plague on crafting. Just casually mentioning.
All-cotton jeans do exist, you just have to look for them, and they may not be in every color or cut. You likely need to look online rather than in stores. I have to do that anyway, as I need a 33″ or 34″ inseam, and none of the stores in my area carry tall inseams.
Re: kittens–yes, but they are such a cute plague! It doesn’t get much better as they get older. My adult cats are constantly reminding me that they are much more important than whatever project I am trying to work on or whatever book I am reading, and that I need to drop everything else and pet them.
Thanks for the info on jeans! You’ve probably saved me some search time.
Zappos helped me find all-cotton jeans. I think LL Bean still offers them too. *Represses urge to rant about merging blue jeans and stretch pants*
I’m repressing right along with you! 😁
This! I don’t mind a little spandex if it is only to provide the jeans with a little “give”, but too often they use it to make them into denim stretch pants, as you say. I HATE skinny jeans. Nearly always, too, they throw in 20-30% polyester into the mix, and the jeans don’t hold up nearly as well.
Re kittens: I have been tatting lace a lot and my friends’ cat (he’s an adult but a kitten to me) is absolutely fascinated by all the yarn and shuttles!
I admire your skill.
That reminds me – a few years ago I was essentially bedridden because of a spine injury, and this is when I took up crocheting. My cat, on one hand, was happy to snuggle and nap with me, but on the other hand, was not happy about getting very little play time.
So one night I went to the bathroom leaving my crocheting unattended on the bed. When I returned, I found the kitty in full hunting mode, bunny kicking the skein of yarn I was working with. It was very cute and funny, but I had to spend much time untangling that yarn after that!
Nowadays, she is very good about my crocheting – no yarns or projects are harmed.
Kittens are adorable little agents of Chaos! 😼
Got up early this morning rarin’ to knock out various errands before work, with a last run to the peach farm planned for my lunch break and soccer practice for Little Biscuit this afternoon, and click click, my car battery was dead. So, one jump from AAA later I guess I’ll be driving to the auto parts store instead. What Winnie-the-Pooh would call a bothering sort of day, but I’m smelling just fabulous in Carnal Flower.
The last time this happened to me I just asked AAA to have someone with battery change experience just do it for me on the spot.
Got some good news. The paid personal day that they shorted me last week, is on this coming paycheck and I got a pay raise. Both are desperately needed this week. Wearing Mitsouko edp today and I think that I will order a couple decants when I get paid.
Congratulations, that is good news! What decants are you thinking of?
I was thinking the new Tobacco Honey for starters.
Nice!
Good thinking. 😉
Congratulations! It’s so wonderful when something like this happens, right when you need it the most.
That’s great news!
Wonderful!
That IS good news! Huzzah!
Yay! Pay rise!
Great news!
Today I spent visiting around Valensole (to get even more olive oil and honey) and Moustiers Ste Marie, which is a very beautiful old village glued to some spectacular rocks.
Even Moustiers seems to be struggling in that two very good ateliers de faïence have disappeared. Still I managed to find a really beautiful plate decorated with small butterflies. It was another sunny and warm day and to be honest, I wish I had some more weeks of vacation. I was pretty much exhausted when I left Luxembourg and I feel a lot better now, but could do with some more stunning views.
First world problems, I feel very privileged as it is.
My SOTD was Oriental Velours, which again has disappeared. I’ll put on some more after my shower.
I’ve been reading about faience and wish I could look around the museum and studios.
They are struggling why — staff? Lack of a market?
I have enjoyed doing google image searches of the towns on your travels, so thank you for keeping us informed! I am in bed early tonight after my covid booster, feeling crap, have not seen any sun in what feels like weeks but is probably just 5 or 6 days, I don’t know, but anyway I’m dreaming I am in Moustiers Ste Marie and feeling chipper in the sunlight….
My guess is economic problems. France is not doing well. And apparently this type of earthenware is losing popularity.
Wish I could send you some of this Southern sunlight. It’s fortifying. Hope your vaccination reaction disappears swiftly!
SOTD is remnants of Shalimar MVP from last night. I totally forgot I had on a couple of sprays and was wondering why I smelled good even though I forgot to perfume myself today.
After several wears I have decided that Shalimar MVP is my favorite over MI. Still holding on to my bottle to test during different seasons. It is proper fall weather in NYC nowadays and I sense my perfume wardrobe shifting as it usually does.
Maybe Shalimar MI is a Spring Shalimar?
It might be the introvert in me but after reading about / watching Diana Vreeland I find myself thinking, “ Why don’t you…..leave me alone”. So, I’m wearing the very quiet, peaceful, weedy, Wander .
😂
Lol, that’s a perfect description of how I feel about her too.
😆
🤣🤣
Some things about her are really offputting.
LOL!
I both admire her and am repelled by her, in equal measure.
I have been thinking a lot this week about ALL the nonsense in the fashion magazines which we used to devour when I was a teen — Vogue, Mademoiselle, etc. I do not think they were a good influence and I am glad that I gave them up by the time I went to college. I hope whatever young people are imbibing now on Tiktok & Instagram is healthier but I suspect not.
Building on Kanuka’s comment re: introversion, I tried to watch the Christmas dinner episode of “The Bear.” It was so noisy, with people talking all at once and shouting over one another, that I turned it off after about five minutes. I really do treasure the quiet.
No perfume this morning because of a doctor’s appointment, but afterward I think I’ll wear some Krizia Teatro alla Scala. It’s big and bold and probably something DV would have liked.
I like peace and quiet too. I have never understood why so many people seem to want/need noise around them all the time, or leave a trail of noise behind them everywhere they go. It’s as if they don’t know that it is possible to speak without shouting, to walk without stomping, or to close a door without slamming it.
Another vote for quiet introversion. I haven’t turned a TV on in many years and don’t see myself doing it any time soon. My TV addict husband who has it blasting into his ears all day long boggles my mind.
I sometimes wonder if people who are blasting loud noises have some kind of hearing loss that they are unaware of.
My husband was, but he wouldn’t believe me. He finally got hearing aids a few months ago.
Probably. A large percentage of the population has measurable hearing loss, and the majority of them are not even aware of it.
Ha, I felt the same way about that episode! Much too much. If you can believe it, it amps up WAY more until an explosive ending.
I told Kevin that episode was possibly the single most stressful hour of tv I ever saw. I thought it was brilliant though.
In Ummagumma this morning, inspired by Deva a few days back. I really do like this one, and it’s good for a cool, rainy week. Crazy busy day…getting 2 minutes away from my desk has been a challenge.
Ugh, hope the rest of the week will be better!
It’s another cold and wet day here, but not as bad as yesterday – that was colder than most of the days in the depths of winter. I’m wearing AdV’s Palissandre door.
House twins today!
SotD is a combo, due to project of the week. Wafting remnants of La Vierge De Fer and SJP Stash. I’m determined to repaint our porches’ wrought iron this year. Stash body oil keeps lingering mosquitos away, while smelling wonderful. LVDF keeps me smelling lady-like while sanding and scraping all the rust off said wrought iron. In other news, the painting project did not advance much today, because a neighbor was having a giant oak tree cut down. I strolled over and watched with several neighbors and two pre-school kids. The tree was starting to die, so it was not too sad. I wondered if it was going to be used as flooring or lumber. The main bole was cut into 4′ sections before being carried away.
I do NOT miss dealing with mosquitoes in the slightest!
This morning’s Apres l’Ondee had worn off, so now I am testing out Papillon Salome. This comes as close as anything I have sniffed from the last 15 or 20 years to smelling like a vintage frag, and I mean that in the best possible way. It seems to be still available too. I am determined to work my way through all my samples at last, but with the rate of turnover in the industry these days, I figure probably half of the samples I have are of things that are now discontinued.
With luck, Papillon will still be going strong should you decide to buy a bottle.
I think if I had to pick between a pristine sample of something discontinued, or an evaporated sample of something readily available, I’d take the pristine sample.
At least I would get to try it.
But not a fun version of “Would You Rather”!
Well yes, but my concern is that I will try something from a pristine sample, fall hard for it, decide I need a bottle, and THEN find it is unavailable.
I am making a point to check availability of stuff before I try the sample, just so I know going in if it is likely to be my only time to experience it.
Fair enough.
My eyes fell on my tiny, vintage bottle of Bandit parfum this morning, and I thought, “I bet this is the kind of perfume DV might have worn.” Go big and go bold or go home, ha! It’s about as far from my personality as possible. But I do enjoy wearing this occasionally.
Have we done a wear a perfume that’s not your personality cp?
Good question! I don’t recall one like that.
Kind of:
https://nstperfume.com/2018/10/26/friday-scent-of-the-day-10-26/
On the road after a very busy day yesterday! Pooped me right out and I slept like a rock, then overslept to boot so running a bit late today.
I just spent 161.48 at Walmart for food and essentials and I want to cry! Haven’t even gotten gas yet or the 40lb bag of T-Rex’s kibble. I went to bed last night with a wet head with a bunch of curl gel/cream spread all over. Woke up this morning looking like the wild woman from Borneo! Even the folks in Wal-Mart were giving me funny looks. Now eating breakfast and lunch at the same time. How? Eating two caramel apples instead of one. AND, I haven’t even had my coffee yet!
SOTD is Kopari Sun Shield Body Glow.
I cry now every time I go to the grocery store.
I recently bought the WOW brand anti frizz spray for curly hair at Sephora. I am liking it. It’s a decent enough price.
I’ll keep that in mind thanks!
I am always shocked when we get gas. Filling up our truck costs $200 here in Canada.
I’m just about unshockable in regards to gas these days.
Yep. We go over the border whenever we can. I think gas is more expensive out there b/c of all the carbon taxes.
Out *here*
Oy vey! I nearly fainted when I recently filled up the truck with gas. It was a hair under $80. Your ride is probably even more expensive.
Not even gonna mention groceries.
Yeah, more than $80! But, gas in NM is about .50 (there no cent emoji!!) cheaper than where I was before so I’m THRILLED about that.
Today’s image prompted me to wear the Zara Jo’s Rhubarb – despite the sun, it’s not, in fact, the summer day that this scent requires.
If you have sun at all I am jealous!
Argh! What’s that strange, bright shiny thing up in the sky?? 😎☀️ I was finally able to take out a bunch of recyclables and some *very* stinky kitchen trash today. And Teflon kitty very much enjoyed hanging out in the sunny bay window this afternoon, soaking up the rays.
SOTD = Aedes de Venustas EdP, from one of you lovely folks and the Sample Stash. Thunk!
Woo-hoo! 🌞
I almost didn’t know what to do with all that bright!
Yay on smelling good and the thunk!
Thanks! And I will be smelling good until I take a shower tomorrow.
I thought we would get sun today, but no.
Yay Teflon Kitty!
I’m wearing one of my 15 ml Hermessence fragrances today
Cuir d’Ange.
I think that is my favorite from the line. You smell great!
SOTD = L’AP Dzing !
It’s got everything, including good poop! The only negative is that my 8 sprays lasted all of 4 hours, if that long!
No IG post yet but may do so later. The bottle is functionally beautiful and it would be a shame not to share with the world.
I am still having issues with text messages from “businesses” like Verizon and a state agency. My problem is that these sites require Multi-factor Authentication (usually a text message with a code) so I am basically dead in the water. I waited to let 48 hours go through since Verizon did a manual opt in (or it’s what they said) and still no joy. Aaargh again!
Good poop 😝 I can’t remember if I’ve sampled Dzing, but probably not since I would’ve remembered good poop!
🤣🤣🤣 at “good poop”!
Sorry to hear that your issues with Verizon have not been resolved.
Yeah, Dzing has never had any lasting power on me. Love it, tho.
I’m sampling Arpege Eclat today, from a generous NSTer. It’s a shampoo-y fruity fresh scent, very good for the office. Not something DV would wear at all!
I wonder what she’s wear if it had to be something modern?
It was cloudy all day here. It was supposed to rain but didn’t. I wore Angel Muse to feel cozy.
The clouds are supposed to return here tomorrow, sigh.
Sunshine was nice while it lasted.
