It’s Tuesday and Johnny Appleseed Day. Birthdays: T. S. Eliot, Olivia Newton-John, Serena Williams. What fragrance are you wearing?
According to her obit at The New York Times, Diana Vreeland usually "breakfasted on tea and oatmeal" (and Harper's Bazaar says she "ate the same lunch every day: a whole-wheat peanut-butter-and-marmalade sandwich, washed down with scotch"). So in her first two meals of the day, at least, Vreeland went for comfort and expediency over fabulousness, and I'm matching that with a cup of Numi Chinese breakfast and a spritz of Guerlain Cologne du 68.
Reminder: 9/29 is Diana Vreeland's birthday. Wear one of her favorite perfumes (reportedly YSL Opium and Chanel No. 5), or wear something equally bold, or wear something from her posthumous perfume line, or take inspiration from a Diana Vreeland quote (more here), or ?
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: you can buy a Price & Kensington 2 cup teapot ("Crafted from durable stoneware, this teapot has a beautiful Red tone and a high gloss finish that prevents the paint from warping or fading. The iconic "Brown Betty" shape allows your tea leaves or bags to swirl freely around the pot, infusing the water with the perfect release of flavors and aromas"), shown above left, for $12 at Everything Kitchens.
Hello.
Sotd is Good Girl Gone Bad Extreme. Creamy white bouquet and I am leaving a floral trail wherever I go.
I have tea and oatmeal every morning too! I have my tea straight though, no cream/milk or sugar. I wonder how Diana had hers?
No idea!
It was COLD out this morning! 2°C — I guess autumn finally deigned to show its face. I had to wear a sweater to work, and I’m even cozier in SL Arabie, so warm and plush.
Yikes! 9C here in Montréal. You smell fabulous.
They haven’t turned on the heat yet in our building, 12C this morning and rainy today. So I am in wool socks and a big tartan sweater. Now I feel like a baby when I see your temperatures.
The last few years at my job, my office was typically between 12 to 15 C when I arrived in the morning. It did feel cold to me, and I don’t feel get cold easily. What’s more, it would be that cold year round, even when it was 35 or 40 C outdoors.
Wow..I would be dressed in layers all year round.
I think for my building since it uses water to heat and cool the building it will wait until the temperature really drops before starting to warm the building.
The building I worked in also used steam and cold water for the heating and cooling. I think that is typical industrial design. I kept two sweaters in my office and sometimes I would wear both at once. I also had a pair of fingerless gloves.
It could have been worse; it was a laboratory, and the actual lab areas were usually too warm, while the offices along the front of the building were too cold. It might be 12 or 15 C in my office, and 27 to 30 C in one of the lab areas. In addition, the employees in the lab work areas were required to wear long-sleeved shirts or lab coats made of fire-retardant fabric; I am so glad I didn’t have to wear FRC in a 30 C room all day long. I would far rather be in a room that is too cold than one that is too hot. It is always possible to put on another layer, but there is only so much you can take off.
Arabie is wonderful.
Arabie is great.
Sotd is Chanel Bois des Iles EdT. It has always been a very challenging scent for me because I can only smell sandalwood, and that is a note that when very prominent I can not wear. So bad, because it is a beautiful scent.
Happy Tuesday! ☕️
Happy Tuesday!
Thank you, Robin!
I wore Xerjoff Ouverture yesterday and felt that all I got was sandalwood, and I normally get a lot of fig. maybe it was just my skin chemistry or the change of season. I don’t mind sandalwood at all, but love other notes to come out and wave hello
It is nice when we can experience the development of an scent. Unfortunately, BdI has always been very linear on me.
I get the same thing that you do from Bois de Iles EdT; linear sandalwood. But it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.
I’m wearing the same T-Shirt again today, so at the mo I’m still wafting Kyoto. The cedar (not sure if that’s even an official note in this perfume) is very prominent on me. I’ll be glad to switch it up later.
We are heading out after a quiet, peaceful week here. Over the weekend, when you’d expect it to be most busy, there were only 3 campers, including me. Yesterday, everyone and his cousin arrived including the guy next to me very late at night who LOUDLY set up camp at 1130pm. Woke me from a dead sleep and I never really got back to a normal sleep so I’m feeling a bit groggy this morning. Extra coffee is on the menu today. Like DV, I had oatmeal this morning, but I think that’s where the similarity ends. 🙃
Hope you can get some rest soon, Deva.
I am working hard today so I think I’ll sleep like the dead tonight! 😴
Bad sleep twins, I hope your coffee is doing its job!
It certainty helped! ☕️
I never get over how dense and rude people can be. I hope you sleep well tonight.
Thanks! I’m sure I will. These are the same campers who have two dogs and didn’t believe in leashes even though there were signs everywhere about leashing and scooping. They let them run all over the campground, out into the road, etc. There are mountain lions in that area, not to mention very steep, precipitous drops made of very fragile sandstone that can crumble easily. The number of disrespectful people camping seems to go up every year. Why would anyone think they are so special the rules don’t apply to them? But, I will say I was there a whole week and that was the only thing that ticked me off. Plus, they left early in the morning today. 👍🏼
Glad they left!
My sympathies to you. I went to bed at 9 and was woken out of a sound sleep at 10:30 by a phone call. Of course I could not go back to sleep and took a sleeping pill. Then woke up with a headache and needed a couple of aspirin with codeine to function. Thank heavens for modern pharmaceuticals. I hope you have a better night tonight!
No sleeping better with chemistry over here. Eventually, I will be so tired I will just lay my head down and sleep like I’m dead- no dreams, no twitches, just sweet oblivion! 😀
Ugh, sorry that your sleep was destroyed by the rude and clueless last night.
Hello all!
I’m in Mitsouko Parfum de Toilette today: equal parts buttery tuberose and oakmoss. Doesn’t last as long as yours expect but so glamorous while it does.
I have two tests this week and not sure which to prioritize today! Luckily I have almost all day tomorrow free.
Have a great day everyone!
house twins
Fabulous!
Good luck on the tests!
Maybe tomorrow I will pullout Mitsouko.
Hope everything goes well with the tests
Good luck this week!
Good luck with those tests!
I am in Balenciaga Paris:
1) Vreeland loved clothes by Balenciaga
2) “The first thing to do is to arrange to be born in Paris. After that, everything follows quite naturally.”
3) This perfume has a feel of style and fashion, at least for me.
I disagree with her about 2) though. She was born in Paris, yes, but what is more important is that she was born into a wealthy family.
And follow that up by marrying a banker!
I think it was mostly a consequence of having rich parents. She and her future husband moved in the same circles. A daughter of an heiress and a stockbrocker – marrying a banker makes sense.
I do not deny her wit, fashion sense and hard work, of course.
Very pretty scent.
Balenciaga Paris has one of the prettiest perfume bottles I can think of.
It does.
I am wearing my favorite flanker of the queen Shalimar Ode à La Vanille Sur La Route De Madagascar.
Reading update..I think I am ready to let go of Aritomo from The Garden of Evening Mists and start Tom Lake by Ann Patchett. Was sad that the movie based on the book is no longer available on Amazon. That was my plan this morning to curl up and watch this. Maybe I am will try to find something similar streaming. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Sipping, what I would call Arabic coffee or Cafe Des Epices-I just make coffee and add cloves, cardamon, ginger powder, cinnamon…etc etc
No makeup today-just some Guerlain kiss kiss bee glow
I had forgotten that there was a movie. I can’t find it streaming anywhere in the US.
Me neither- that was my big plan today 📺 ☕️ 🍿
I will be interested to know what you think of Tom Lake. I didn’t enjoy it very much because the tone and family dynamic was too much like an episode of the Waltons or even Little Women, a suffocating “goodness” that was almost smug.
ah-I feel like I should of consulted you before I picked this one up since you seem to know my taste in books better than I do.
I enjoyed that book. It was the August book club pick at Barnes and Noble. I try to read most of their books in the book club simply because there seems to be a good mixture of fiction. Of course, there are ones that I don’t always care for, but for the most part they are quite good.
Good to know. I will give it a shot and see how it goes
I wore Stash over the weekend and it smelled so good I decided to really go for it today – lotion, hair mist and perfume. Very nice!
It’s supposed to rain later and I hope it materializes, it’s very dry here. The fall colors are starting up and it’s very pretty, even on a cloudy day.
Stash is so great. I hope it comes back, though I do have a back up. 😶🌫️
I hope so too, although I got great buys on a couple of giftsets so I have back up.
It’s on fragrance net right now.
Stash is really unique, which is rare for celeb scents.
I couldn’t smell much of anything with Stash, sadly. It did the same thing on me that the original Omnia does. I figure I am anosmic to something in both perfumes.
Right now, I am in Clinique Happy. It’s my first day back at work after my vacation.
Hope the perfume is living up to its name!
I’ve been going through my perfume collection, weeding out the things I don’t wear. In the process, I unearthed my vintage-ish (1980’s) bottle of My Sin, so that is what I am wearing right now. I always struggle with this one; I love vintage perfume, and don’t mind a little skank, but this one is somehow a bit much.
Have been winnowing too, and have found a couple of items that wear me, e.g. Ambre Narguile.
I found that out too the other day – it was a lot stronger than I remembered!
Being reminded of something in the back of the cabinet is always good.
I’ve rehomed some perfume bottles this year as well.
In Encens Mythique, in my rich-lady-at-office guise.
Love your SOTD
You smell fabulous!
You are making me want to dig out my sample of this for tomorrow
Wearing Narcisse Noir this morning because I felt like it and I sit in my office by myself, so the only permission I need is my own.
You smell fabulous!
Sampling Akro Bake for a second time today. I do quite like it and am wondering if I need a FB. 🤔
Is that Akro’s latest?
Not quite their latest…they released a coconut one called Rise I believe recently.
Thanks for letting me know, I haven’t really kept myself informed of their releases. I’m only familiar with their original scents Awake, Night, Dark, Malt, Smoke and Haze.
I’m still going back and forth on Bake. One the one hand, I like it, but on the other I’m not a huge gourmand fan and it’s weird to smell like a lemon poppyseed muffin when I wear it. 🙂 I appreciate what they were trying to do, tho.
Yeah, I like it too but I have been trying to repeatedly tell myself just because I like a perfume doesn’t mean I need a full bottle. It’s like I think it and can say it but my brain doesn’t quite grasp it. 🤣 🧠 Or maybe my brain doesn’t really believe me. 😉
😀
I wore Iris Perle by Les Indémodables today. I did a hike near the top of the Montagne de Lure and must have sweated it off. Interestingly, I can still detect some of yesterday’s Divine.
I got some stunning views of the Alps, the Ventoux and Provence. Well worth the effort.
Sounds beautiful
You smell lovely. Wish I were there!
Wowza, sounds fantastic, all the way around! 🏔️
Cold again here and I had to scrape ice off the windscreen yesterday , about 2C. I have my art class tonight and we are learning the grisaille technique, using grey tones to capture light and dark before adding colour with glazes ( acrylics) . Very meditative. Wearing Gris clair which is perfect .
https://www.artandobject.com/news/brief-history-grisaille-technique
Attending an art class is one of those things I would love to do at some point. Such a great combination of using your hands and your mind. It seems relaxing.
SOTD is Van Cleef & Arpels Bois d’Iris. It is not nearly as bold as the POAL that I spilled all over myself yesterday. However, it is a good transition scent and one I wear quite a bit in the cooler months.
oh no..how did you spill POAL?
Someone gave me a small splash bottle that she found in France. I planned to just pour a little on my wrist and it came out pretty fast and went down my arm. It definitely lasted all day😂
OMG. POAL is a beast. It must have projected like crazy all day or longer.
I once put on a coat I’d worn while wearing POAL a month prior, and it was *still* projecting!
Oh, when it comes to clothes, it will stay until you wash them!
The VC&A Bois d’Iris is a lovely way to get iris-phobes to try that note.
Wearing a sample of Angel’s Share and about to hike over to a local perfume friend’s house to purchase their mostly unused bottle for a great price, woot! My wish made over the weekend on the poll has come true. Check that off the list!
Happy for you that your wish came true. I love Angels’ Share.
So cool! A win-win situation for everyone.
I love Angels Share
How nice! I have a sample of AS on the way.
I’m in Shalimar MI today, as the bottle was right in front of me when I was rushing to get ready. I miss having my perfumes easier to access…stupid, neverending renovation.
Oh no on the never-ending renovations! Smelling great in your MI.
I almost wore that again today. Think I will wear tomorrow. I really do like it.
I’m wearing Amber Absolutely from Fort and Manle. It’s back into warming fragrances because we are experiencing a horrible relapse into winter. It’s wet, windy and cold.
So sorry! Windy wet and cold here too…
The Bien Être Eau de lavande I applied this morning is gone, it mentions high altitude which is the best but as Bien Être is very affordable, sold at the supermarket, I suppose it uses only a little but who knows. Went shopping in Nyons, trying to decide on a present for my neighbors who water my plants when I’m on vacation. Calissons d’Aix I think and artisanal nougat from Montélimar.
I love the Bien-Être colognes, and they are so cheap. My favourite is the Eau Parfumée des Familles.
Calissons and nougat are wonderful gifts. Would you be able to bring olive oil as well? Nyons has a good one.
So glad you like Bien Être too, the Familles is great! Olive oil would be perfect but too heavy.
Artisanal nougat sounds marvelous!
So delicious, full of nuts and honey.
Calissons and nougat sounds perfect!
Thank you, yes I think they will like them.
I’m trying Shalimar Millesime Iris today! So far, no caramel, but I get a sweet buttery iris that I could picture coming across as caramel. The iris is definitely more buttery than carroty or dusty to me. It does bear a resemblance to Shalimar for me, but is airier and much sweeter. Thumbs up for me.
Completely agree. I get iris butter too which I think is what others are identifying as caramel. I love it.
How is the silage?
One spray on my forearm is noticeable and adequate for me, but no family members have mentioned noticing a scent. They don’t often do though, unless something is strong!
Thumbs up for me too.
Well, I got all my freebies packed up and shipped. Does anyone else besides me worry when they have several things to send off that they will mix up the items and send someone the wrong thing?
Note to Robin: I accidentally posted my comment on the swapmeet thread instead of here. Please delete it there. I don’t think I mixed up any perfumes, but I did mix up my comments.
You are very kind to send out these freebies. I’m sure the recipients wouldn’t mind a mix up if it accidentally happened…..sometimes surprises are fun!!
I put sticky notes of recipient’s name on each bottle and line everything up on a table, checking it carefully before wrapping, then putting the sticky on the outside of the box until it’s sealed and labeled. Haven’t made a mistake yet but I’m verrry careful.
I am very careful as well, but I still worry a bit. I wrap everything one at a time, and after packing it, I write the initials or abbreviation of the perfume name and the recipient on the box (in a spot where it will be covered by the label). I don’t think I’ve made a mistake yet, but I really, really don’t want to.
Will do, no worries!
I finally put on perfume an hour ago and chose the super cozy and comforting Bengale Rouge. I need to make a decant of it for swap meet, so I’ll take care of that tonight. Yesterday I thunked a sample of Chanel Boy.
Having a very stressful week. I’m in the final two weeks of planning for our big annual company meeting that lasts about half a day. It’s my first time being on the planning side of this, and I really generally hate event planning. And of course, we’re having plenty of road bumps to keep things interesting. Oh, and on top of that, I have to speak twice during this meeting, and I loathe public speaking.
On top of work, my dad is in the hospital being treated for bronchitis and pneumonia. He is ok and in good spirits, but he is a lifelong smoker and doesn’t take great care of himself so I’m curious what some of his tests will reveal. And just today, my partner’s company laid off 30% of the workforce. He still has a job but he lost his manager and others he works with and was reassigned to another team (still doing the same job though). So just a heck of a lot to process.
Thankful for beautiful perfume and the knowledge that there is an end in sight for the work stress.
That is a lot to process. Hope next week will be better!
Thank you!
I am sorry you are going thru all that. I hope your father recovers soon!
Thanks so much, pl67!
Ugh that is stress on all fronts. I hope your father improves and feels better soon. Sending you great, big hugs.
I appreciate the well wishes and the hugs!
Oh no, that’s a lot to handle in one week. Hang in there and I hope things calm down soon!
Thank you!
Egads. That is a super-sized load of stress to deal with in a mere week.
Hope that your Dad feels better soon.
Thanks, Jalapeno.
I really hope you get a bit of peace and quiet this week and everything goes well.
Thank you so much.
Hugs! That’s a lot
Hugs back!
Sending you big hugs, I have dealt with event planning and it’s stressful for sure. Thankfully I never had to present. Healing prayers for your dad.
Thank you! Sending you a hug back.
I’m sorry for your stressful deluge in the middle of our actual Seattle deluge☹️ ☔️
May your week improve and in 2 weeks, your event going well without a hitch🌹
May your event *go* well😊
Thanks, allo. I did manage to get out for a walk after work and only got a little wet towards the end.
That’s alot of things going on all at once! I hope your Dad is OK and that everything else goes well. Sending a few more hugs. I’m with you on the public speaking thing!
Thanks for the hugs, Gail!
I am sorry about your Dad being in the hospital. I am wishing him a speedy recovery.
Thanks, lillyjo.
Be sure with all of this going on that you take care of yourself too!
BTW I love your perfume choice.
Thanks, Kris. I’m glad our rain let up long enough to get a walk in earlier. Walking always helps me feel better for a bit
Wow, that’s a lot! I hope your dad is feeling better soon and that you can find some moments of peace.
Thanks so much, ringthing.
Goodness! One foot in front of the other…you will get to the end of it, but boy is that a lot.
Yeah, it’s kind of absurd to have this much going on at once.
And I meant to say you smelled great today. I really love Cologne du 68.
Mmm, Robin smells good today! I haven’t worn Cologne du 68 in a while, but it’s so cozy and classic.
My SOTD is Galop, chosen to complement my top (deep navy with scarlet flowers) and to bolster my sense of confidence and loveliness on a slightly tender day. Galop to me has warrior-goddess leanings; it’s what I picture Gal Godot’s Wonder Woman smelling like.
I love Galop. I saw it at a discounter once for a stupid good price. I talked myself out of it thinking it was too good to be true. I still wonder though.
Hope the day went just as you hoped Isabella!
Chanel Cristalle EDT
Classy.
Day 5 of the rain here. It hasn’t been continuous, or heavy. But it has been a major nuisance. (sulk)
Had an excellent night of sleep last night. Wish I could do that consistently.
SOTD = commando, except for Korres Grecian Gardenia body butter on my shins.
Jalapeno — if you email me at roses_50 at yahoo period com, I may be able to fulfill your answer to no. 1 in the poll the other day.
Oh wow!
Yay for good sleep!
It was so nice to feel human when I woke up this morning.
Sulking here too!
Yay for great sleep.
Some old school Lolita Lempicka EdP for me today. Such a great bottle. Some days I crave anise but find LL too sweet but today with the transitional weather – cool & sunny – it’s just right.
I agree that LL can be weather dependent.
SOTD = Serge Lutens Borneo 1834
Patchouli and chocolate, what’s not to love? 🥰
Also, just today, I have decided to tag this as vintage for the sole reason of the bottle label.

Home Goods now has, are you ready for this? 🎄 decorations out! 😱😱😱
We have a few Christmas decorations out too. They just are not upfront yet. After Halloween probably.
There was a full aisle and 3 end caps (or it could have been 6) as well as a corner.
At least they didn’t put the Xmas stuff out in August. Small mercies.
Seriously…
No, but I’ve been seeing Halloween stuff in the stores since July. As soon as Independence Day was over, it went straight to Halloween.
I am off today and have been going through my perfume stash to see what I might want to swap. I of course had to spray everything, so I probably stink.
I did put one spray of Guerlain Tobacco Honey on the back of my hand… Woah Mama that is a lot of Honey! It’s too much for me.
But do you stink pretty? 😆
It was quite strong on me, hence just the 2 sprays yesterday. I do think it has to mature some more.
I’m hoping it will mellow with age.
I’ve been doing a lot of that–testing a bunch of things at once, until it all gets so muddled up I can’t tell one thing from another.
