Happy Friday and happy National No Housework Day! It’s also the 75th World Health Day (the theme for 2023: “health for all”). Our community project for today: for Billie Holiday’s birthday, wear gardenia, or wear one of her favorite perfumes (Coty Emeraude and Bourjois Evening in Paris) or wear a fragrance inspired by her (Serge Lutens Une Voix Noire, Maria Candida Gentile Lady Day, Strange Invisible Perfumes Lady Day, Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Don't Explain, to name a few).
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
Points for me in Maria Candida Gentile Lady Day.
Reminder: on 4/14, for Pan American Day, wear a perfume named for a place in North or South America, with bonus points for places that aren't New York City.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but usually fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Can’t do big white florals such as Gardenia myself so just a in Dans tes Bras by FM.
FM is bristling at your use of the phrase “just in” 🙂
ha ha probably so.
Good morning heartache
Here we go again
Good morning heartache

Gardenia by Chanel
Love!
Great song, great scent, even if it is mostly jasmine 🙂
My perfume is mostly green anyway.
No housework? That’ll be the day. There’s always kitchen chores if nothing else.
I’m wearing my only gardenia-laden scent, and it’s a doozy: Cartier Panthère parfum, one of those mid-eighties too-much-is-never-enough floral oriental chypres. (I scored a quarter ounce a decade ago and I’ve been doling it out by the occasional droplet ever since: if it doesn’t go haywire, it’ll be around after I’m gone.) It’s more restrained than you’d expect: it isn’t Poison or Giorgio or any of those take-no-prisoners scents from the era, but it is incredibly lush and complex.
Love this scent !!!
You smell gorgeous.
Ooh, that is one of those rich symphonic florals lashed with woods & patch and oakmoss and a hint of something oily resinous (ambergris?) that I admire on others but could never pull off. You smell marvelous!
“Symphonic” is exactly what it is! There’s a whole lot going on all the time: it makes you pine for the days when pretty much every scent was multifaceted and intriguing.
Don’t really have anything Gardenia dominant so I am in Nasomatto Narcotic V. Placed a grocery store order to pick up this afternoon.
Yay for not having to gather your own groceries 🙂
In the always classic Jungle Gardenia today
Yes! You smell oh-so-good.
My mother used to love this one. ❤️ I think because it was fronted by Elizabeth Taylor.
My mother wore this also. I can remember the commericals for it.
I’m in Un Matin d’Orage, which is definitely a gardenia scent on my skin.
Another one I forgot to consider!
You smell great, I love the EDT especially.
Hello all!
I’m in Une Voix Noire today. I don’t wear it often because it’s rather quiet on me, but I do love it. A strawberry jam gardenia. Elegant in a way only Serge can do.
It’s gonna be a long day today at work so I’m hoping for the best!
Have a great day everyone.
Double CP points!
Wow, I love your description of “strawberry jam gardenia.” I must smell that one, and soon! Hope your long day goes OK. At least our periods of heavy rain seem to be ending (for now).
“A strawberry jam gardenia” sounds quite intriguing!
Oh i wish I had purchased a decant or bottle! Lucky you. I just checked out the Lutens website and this and also Miel du Bois are notll listed now.
I can send you a decant, you can email me at herasuk@hotmail.com.
In April Aromatics Calling All Angels for my week of incense. One of my favorite incense perfumes!
Busy day at work. Already having my third cup of coffee and a mini custard tart. Counting the hours for the day to be over.
Happy Friday! ☕️
I love that one too!
Beautiful scent!
Thinking of you and your mom and sending positive energies and 🤗 🤗 your way.
Thank you, Laila. 🌻
That custard tart sounded like a great snack! 😋
They are! Craving for more, but I have to control myself! 😀
In Zagorsk this morning for my ongoing week of incense. I only have a dabber and suspect that Zagorsk really needs to be sprayed to be fully appreciated. Nevertheless, it is very pretty in an unanticipated way — some combination of notes is reminding me of osmanthus, even though there’s none of that in there. Perhaps it’s the pimiento berries? Dunno, but I’m looking forward to its development over the morning.
You smell great! Zagorsk is my favorite from that series.
Thanks! So far I like Kyoto best, but that opinion might change if I sprayed Zagorsk — it really is very pretty.
I liked all of the CdG Incense series. There wasn’t a clinker in the bunch.
I have tried Avignon, Kyoto, Zagorsk and Jaisalmer. I own Avignon and Kyoto.
Incense has become a favorite category for me.
Today it’s 24, Faubourg for me, the only thing in my collection that has a gardenia note listed. I smell rich.
You smell good and rich!
😅
I love a good Rich Lady scent
There’s a gardenia note in 24F? And I thought I didn’t have anything appropriate for Billie’s birthday. Perhaps I’ll switch to it once Zagorsk has faded. And you smell divine, btw!
I’m pretty sure I saw it listed as one of the notes on Fragrantica, fwiw.
I also did not know that 24F had gardenia in it.
I smell like a gardenia garden today. A sample of JD/Dame’s Rigur de Gardenia on one wrist and Lime, Gardenia, & Benzoin on the other for comparison. RdG is creamy with a coconutty gardenia and a violet leaf + woody base underneath, and the L,G,&B is delightfully tart and Springy with the lime and hyacinth notes right up front with the gardenia. Both are gorgeous.
Between the gardenias and the incenses, we all are a beautifully-scented bunch today!
Started the day with F&M Christmas Tea for a little bit of spice on the commute to the office and now I’m back to Twinning’s English Breakfast. I’m hoping Good Friday and Easter Monday will be quiet at work so that I can finish up my review of these old paper files without interruption.
Somehow I don’t have ANY gardenia-dominated scents. Will try the ones you’ve mentioned.
Looks like we both had almost-the-same Dame idea!
You and I are part of the Dame gardenia club along with Laila!
Everyone smells so nice today! I jumped into the CP with both feet, wearing EL Tuberose Gardenia. It’s been raining here for nearly two weeks but the forecast is for clearing tomorrow. I hope so, there are things I need to do outside for spring that I can’t (or won’t) do in the rain. Plus I want to see sun!
Wow, enjoy your first day of sun! You smell perfect for it.
Oh, I do love Tuberose Gardenia but never moved beyond a decant (too much perfume!). You smell great.
Well, I sort of thought I was CP adjacent in Eau de Protection–the larger than life Rossy de Palma kind of a beneficiary of Holiday’s aesthetic. . . but I just looked up Rossy de Palma Eau de Protection on Fragrantica, and then my Eau de Protection on the same. The notes are different. Same perfumers. I know notes are just fantasies. . . so maybe they are the same. But. Weird. Okay.
Also, boring rant: I am going to complain about a book. “Scent: A Natural History of Fragrance.” Beautiful cover, really interesting topic, excellent press–Yale. All I am going to say is why didn’t the editor copy-edit? I’ve seen so many semicolons I am starting to dream about them. And the repeating of the same content, almost the same sentences–sometimes on the same page. I know I sound crabby and obnoxious. But golly I want to enjoy this book. Well, either I am starting to filter the language better, or it is indeed improving, but last night I managed four pages without throwing the book across the room (but not in a row 😉 ). Anyone else read this one? I will persevere because she has written exactly the book I want to read.
NOw I will have to see if I can find a copy and tyr reading it myself. I am a second grade teacher ans pretty good at making sense of any writing. I will see if I get more critical when I know it is adult who got paid to write.
I finished reading this book not too long ago and it also left me wanting… I learned some new fun facts about raw perfume materials and how the plants that provide them grow but overall, I was not moved by this book.

*Was* there a copy editor? Sometimes there isn’t these days. OR the author could not bear to have a precious semicolon touched…
Yeah, in my experience (as my spouse’s indexer and first round editor), often the academic presses don’t offer much in the way of editing or indexing services. These days, you’re lucky if you get light copy editing, but basically it’s proofreading. If you want an index, you have to hire someone. (Fortunately, I can be hired for the cost of a dinner out, at least in my household.)
I remember in grad school really hating Cambridge UP on this point. You’d have to pay $45-70 for a 200-page paperback (in the ’90s…it was a lot for one of a number of books you’d have to read for that week’s seminar), and then there were egregious typos everywhere. Grr.
Not a boring rant – Mr. Mossy used to complain about academic books frequently before he retired. They were very pricey, but seemed to use what I thought were “knock-off” book methods. His eyes still light up over a sewn signature, which probably also indicates real editing was involved! He is still riled by a certain case bound book from Oxford UP. And, thanks for reminding me of “Scent,” editing issues and all. I thought it sounded good.
Initio Parfums Psychedelic Love.No Gardenia present, but still a oretty fragrance
Inwas thinking about Jour d’Hermes for today but I’m trying to finish up the Initio sample kit.
Happy Friday!
XO’s
I tried but failed to find my sample of the flanker Jour d’Hermes Gardenia. It wasn’t all that gardenia-sh anyway.
I went with Jour d’Hermes parfum today, it’s lovely.
Am I the first to report in with Arquiste Boutonnière? It’s in its first, rather-too-much hour, but how I love it when the hubbub subsides.
We are twins in Boutonnière no. 7!
I’m wearing Tauer Sotto la luna: Gardenia today. Turns out I did have a sample in the Tauer bin.
National No Housework Day? Well, today is a holiday and I gave the cleaners a day off, mostly because I wanted to sleep in and didn’t want to be scrambling around the house at 7 a.m. tidying and emptying trash and making beds, nor did I want to figure out what I was going to do with my family outside the house for two hours early this morning. HOWEVER, that means I need to do the bimonthly cleaning today.
Isn’t it amazing how much cleaning one has to do to enable the cleaners to clean? We do the same thing … although it’s mostly to remove the breakables from the target areas. Our house cleaner is a bit of a bull in a china shop.
Oh, yeah, that too! They’ve broken a mirror and a scale so far.
They’d make the beds, but I don’t want to pay them extra to do that. I figure my teen and spouse can handle that much in the morning.
Billie Holiday seems like a person who would not quit. For the CP win: vintage (70-80’s?) Emeraude parfum de toilette from a 30ml splash bottle with a white “crown” cap. It smells very classy and mellow. Wonderful woody-vanilla base. Wishing a blessed Easter Weekend to those who celebrate. This year, it is a time of reflection for me. I put a basket of pastel blue and pink pansies where I can see them out my kitchen window. They give me a tender feeling.
Happy Easter MossyBerry! You smell lovely.
Happy Easter, MossyBerry! 🪻🐇🐣🪺🌹🌻
I love pansies and always plant them in my window boxes in early April where I can see them from my kitchen and breakfast room windows. Weather was too ugly this week but will do so right after Easter as the weather looks great all week. Happy 🐣!
Happy Easter, MossyBerry. I’ll celebrating and I love pansies, too (of course I do!) – have some blue ones gracing my table right now.
*I’ll be celebrating
Some people have planted pansies in their yards out here. It’s a cheerful accent and a definite pick me up.
Happy Easter, MossyBerry! I remember Emeraude, although I haven’t put my nose on it in quite a long time. In my mind, it was the “classy one” of the trio it was often advertised with in the 70’s, including L’Aimant and L’Origan.
Enjoy your sweet pansies!
I’m in Boutonnière no.7 and enjoying it very much.
Happy weekend everybody!
Happy weekend adanst!
Happy weekend, Adanst! You smell great!
Happy weekend to you!
Happy Weekend!
Don’t have any gardenia frags so interpreted the CP somewhat differently. Read an interesting article (https://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2021/feb/22/god-bless-the-style-how-billie-holiday-made-glamour-revolutionary) describing how Ms. Holiday used style – her elegant gowns, furs, gloves, those gardenias – both as protective armor and to make a statement radical in that era: that a woman of color could be successful, could don and deserve the trappings of success. I think she would make a similar statement with her fragrance. Chose Tom Ford’s Cafe Rose: so glamorous and sophisticated, dark, decadent, smoky and louche. Lady Day would wear it well.
I like it, excellent job!
Thanks, Robin! I enjoyed learning more about Ms. Holiday, plus the many great gardenia suggestions from everyone. Somehow I don’t have any – but that will be remedied soon! 😉
What a great pick!
I love your interpretation, BalletBetz, as well as the fragrance you chose. I think you should get CP points for most thoughtful response.
For the CP I went with Elie Saab essence No 2 Gardenia, I prefer it slightly over Jo Loves Gardenia, I like my gardenias to be paired with jasmine, not tuberose, so quite a few are not my friends but this one I really enjoy.
Tonight it’s L’Instant Magic which I haven’t uses in a long time, powdery almonds.
Nice call, and another I totally forgot about!
I forget about it myself 😀, it was a dream to wear in spring weather, very grateful for this CP.
Thought about wearing Elisabeth Taylor’s Gardenia today but wasn’t feeling it, so I’m wearing vintage Emeraude instead. One of the prettiest openings in all of perfumery.
Yay, so glad to see Emeraude make a showing!
I love Emeraude! I like to wear it in late winter or early spring.
I remember those vintage bottles themselves being so pretty. Old school bottle porn at its finest.
I love gardenias only when they are floating on water. In a glass bowl, in a restaurant, on white linen.
SOTD is vanille 44 – just cause.
And cause it smells great 🙂
Good Day All
Wearing two spritzes of Queen today.
Yum, you smell great!
Continuing my indolic jasmine roll with SL A La Nuit. I’m hoping to snag a bell jar this summer😋
Ah, LOVE that one… big bell jar jealousy over here. 😊
😊
That one is glorious! I hope you do get that bell jar!
Thank you! It was a toss up today between A La Nuit, Pays de Jasmin and Diptyque Essences Insensées 2015 (for which you deserve an enabler pin!)
Cool, another pin to add to the Stash!
All I did today was housework, ha. Took the day off because I was feeling off, just my regular Sad Day of the month.
Wearing Parisian Musc by Matiere Premiere. Really enjoying this one from the sample set. Vegetal musk and fig leaf with a light creamy coconutty touch. It is recommended alongside skin scents like Fleur de Peau but I like this one a bit more than FdP for that slightly green and ever so slightly edible quality.
Bummer about the Sad Day!
Sorry to hear about your sad day, it’s good you took the day off!
I too prefer Parisian Musc to Fleur de Peau. It surprised me because I generally love Diptyque and find Maitiere Premiere to be a bit overhyped.
Thank you friend <3
MP is indeed a bit hyped up. I think Parisian Musc is the only one I'd like to wear on a regular basis. Neroli Oranger and Encens Suave are also nice but did not move me as much as PM. Did you like anything else from the set?
I liked Encens Suave (although it’s not so incense-y to me) and shockingly Falcon Leather (leather is usually challenging to me). My biggest disappointment was Radical Rose, I love rose and saw several people claim this is THE rose for them. It was not for me!
I found that a lot of their scents have the same sweetish woody base that reminds me of BR540… is it ambroxan? I’m not very good with differentiating all my aroma chemicals. Did you detect that too?
I know what you mean about the same base! To me it’s kind of a woody smell with a fuzzy texture? I don’t know how to describe it but I find it in Santal Austral, Crystal Saffron, Bois Ebene and also Falcon Leather. Tbh I really don’t like this synthetic so I avoid BR540 as well. Eau Rihla from Diptyque gives me the same effect as well, if you’ve smelled that one.
I thought it was Ambroxan too as it is a common note, but I smelled Ambroxan on its own and it didn’t give me the same effect. Ambroxan to me is a salty musky, slightly leathery scent and is missing the fuzzy texture. I’ve been trying to find out what it is and it is driving me crazy.
Radical Rose was a solid jammy rose to me, but I’m not a rose lover so it was a challenge from the start. I gotta try Falcon Leather on skin, I did like the very vegetal take on leather but was weary about said base.
Hope the clean house will make tomorrow happier?
I’m honoring Billie on her birthday with 2 of Jeffrey Dame’s scents: Lime Gardenia Benzoin edt, a slightly peppery, crisp and clean 💐 of flowers highlighted by gardenia layered over his Soliliflore Gardenia perfume oil, creamy and lush, a delightful combo. Gardenia always reminds me of HS days where I first discovered this beautiful flower in the form of a wrist corsage, the norm for all our homecoming dances and proms and special occasions. Brings back nice memories! 🥰
It’s been a very active – and scary 😧- week of weather. We tried but were prevented from attending my favorite musician’s birthday concert last Friday by flood and tornado warnings that lay in our path. I hated to forfeit the tix but since he posts most of his concerts live on FB I just viewed it as a thank you for those; it was the birthday 🤗 I wanted to give him in person I knew I’d miss. Instead I messaged him Happy Birthday, told him what happened and that we’d catch him next time around. I didn’t have to wait long, though, as he immediately sent me free tix for the next day’s concert, premium vip front-row seats, much nicer than the ones I had bought. So I was able to give (and receive 🥰) that special hug after all. What a guy!❤️ This time he performed with both a percussionist and an oud player, so the music had a Middle Eastern flavor, absolutely entrancing!
Today is a gorgeous ☀️ day, which is the forecast for all week with temps warming each day. My walk around the garden earlier – listening to the goldfinches, red-winged blackbirds, cardinals, and a red-bellied woodpecker (I highly recommend the Merlin Bird ID app 👍!) – showed all our shrubs are ready to burst into bloom and lots of bulbs are already blooming, especially the daffodils 🌼!
I’m getting ready and looking forward to a modified traditional Polish Easter feast with my son and his family, and wish everyone a blessed Easter, Passover, Ramadan, or whatever you may celebrate! 🙏
Happy Easter, Laila! 🐣🐇🌻🪻🌹☀️
You, too! 🐣 🐰🌷
Wow, we are double scent twins! Color me gobsmacked!
😳😱🤪😂
Happy Easter, Laila! 🌅 So you got to hug your musician after all, cheers for happy endings!
Yes, and I got to meet and chat with two very talented musicians I had not met before. The joy of attending small intimate venue performances where the musicians appreciate the opportunity to personally visit with their audience as much as their fans do with them!
So nice that you got to see the concert after all!
Wow. I assumed there’d be a number of Narciso white cubes out there for the CP. Love this and may replenish.
Guess I didn’t get the memo. Full scrubbing of the kitchen and inside the oven. Laundry – duvet cover so always a bit of an ordeal.. But that was all. It’s very sunny, so we took a drive north for late lunch and a stop at the local lavender place to replenish our guest soaps. Snow expected tomorrow, but it won’t stick.
I skipped the last few episodes of Daisy Jones and the Six. Not much music, and I could see where it was headed. So, I flipped to the last 20 minutes of the final show to catch the wrap up. Most entertaining thing about the series was that in the first couple of episodes Daisy is wearing earrings very similar to ones I own. A few years back, I became obsessed with finding big door knocker hoop earrings and finally found a silver pair in one of those little stands run by the jeweler. Made me smile to see Daisy wearing the same.
Yeah, Narciso White Cube was the only other gardenia scent I had. I wore it earlier this week since it was easier to find than the Tauer sample I dug out for today. I may wear White Cube again tomorrow, though. I’m with you on the replenishing — I bought a second travel-sized rollerball as soon as I found out it was being discontinued. (These days I generally consider smaller bottles to be FBs for me; there are few large bottles I will ever get through and I have no space for more 100 ml bottles.)
You smell great!
Scent twins! I’m late to the party and have been reading all the comments, looking for White Cube wearers.
Honestly I don’t know why I didn’t wear White Cube either. Next week…
Evening in Paris, picked up for a song (hah) at a neighborhood estate sale.
This was an over-full week so I’m looking forward to a calmer weekend and Easter Sunday with family. Be well, everyone!
Neighborhood estate sales are the best!
tried going for gardenia, with Heretic Perfumes Dirty Gardenia, but while it was pretty, it just wasn’t rich enough so I dug out my tiny vial with few remaining drops of Strange Invisible Perfumes Lady Day parfum and I am sniffing my wrist round the clock. What an amazing, complex and stunning perfume this was. Gardenia up top, strange flowers on the middle, buttery sandalwood in the drydown. Beauty with a touch of melancholy, perfect for evoking Billie Holiday. I wish it was still in production but I will enjoy wearing what’s left of it.
Yes! Use up the Good Stuff!
My cats did not get the memo about today being National No Housework Day. Sigh. Had to grab the Spot Shot again. So I decided to continue with household tasks and have done both a load of laundry and a load of dishes. And dug up some dandelions in the grass.
SOTD = a double shot of gardenia today with Dame Gardenia Soliflore body cream on my shins, and Dame Lime Gardenia & Benzoin EdT. The Lime Gardenia & Benzoin is even prettier than the Cassis Rose & Sandalwood.
You smell fabulous! Sounds like you needed a double shot after those kitty witties were double trouble💕
Thanks!
One of the cats gave me a break and hurled on an easy to clean surface. Gotta take those wins where I can.
What would we do without the Spot Shot? Mine came out last week when I walked upstairs in the dark and put my foot right into cat puke on the rug. Sigh.
Ewwwwwwwwww!
At least I did not step in any cat barf today.
I’ve been tempted by the Dame body cream.
It is definitely worth trying.
I am honored to be your twin! 🙇♀️
Whoo hoo!
I wore Dilletante today to add a note of cheerfulness to adorable hubbie’s first infusion day. Long day, no bad reactions there but now he is sound asleep. Poor guy. Dilletante is still with me after all this time! Such a shame they discontinued it! Gotta find every spark of joy and love in every moment!
I loved that perfume so much and I was really sad to see that it was discontinued. Hiram Green said something in Insta post that it just wasn’t popular enough to justify keeping it in the line up.. Glad to hear someone else was a fan.
Glad to hear that your hubby did not have any negative reactions!
I’m glad your husband didn’t get a bad reaction.
I hope your husband has a restful weekend! How often does he need to get infusions?
I’ll have to hunt for my sample of Dilletante, can’t recall what it smells like.
I spent most of the day sampling. I tried JhaG Lust for Sun and Elis Brooklyn Florist. I liked both well enough. They are very similar. I put on a spray of Chanel Gardenia for the cp.
Tree Hut is on sale at ulta right now so I bought 2 body scrubs and 2 body creams. If anyone wants to smell like Vanilla frosting, the TH Vanilla is for you. It is so sweet it almost made me feel sick.
So sweet that it almost makes you sick would be terrifying for me. You have more tolerance for sweet perfumes than I do.
I listened to St Matthew’s Passion today, something I like to do every year on Good Friday. I’m not religious but I did go to catholic school for many years and am into religious art.
I added to the churchy moodiness by wearing Messe de Minuit!
Perfect match!
I’m a lapsed Catholic but I do love the music: Bach, Baroque and Renaissance music in particular. If you are interested in unusual music that was specifically written for the Holy Week, how about Gesualdo’s Tenebrae:
https://youtu.be/YmWBOsLh2x4
The Saturday ones are the ones I love the most, but Thursday and Friday are also great.
Messe de Minuit is indeed a perfect match! I love incense perfumes, especially the churchy ones.
I’m wearing Narciso White Cube. Sounds like many of us are enjoying sunshine today and I am glad to see it. Nice and clear and cool. I went to some estate & garage sales with a couple of friends today and that was fun, although the only perfume I found was a partial bottle of Chanel Chance. The price wasn’t bad, why couldn’t it have been, say, Allure Sensuelle, or Cristalle? Money saved.
Seriously, if I found Cristalle EdT at a garage sale I’d scream.
SOTD was Jour d’Hermes, in parfum, with its beautiful gardenia heart. I’m really enjoying it, I think I’ll wear it on Easter Sunday!
I wonder if I still have a Jour d’Hermes sample in the Sample Stash?
SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP
Not one bit of gardenia … do take look at my IG post for hope.

I left the office at 2PM today and did something naughty … well, not so naughty considering I could be naughtier … Anyway, I have to do my tax returns first and once they’re filed, I can work on a personal splitmeet since I’ll be on vacation at the official start of the NST one.
A cliffhanger post? Stay tuned, NSTers!
Unusually cool and rainy but I know the heat is coming soon so I don’t mind. We need the rain and today I was in an office with no windows.
Wearing Tom Ford Black Orchid Voile de Fleur today. I have the original TFBO but this is a case where I like the flanker much better.
