Tuesday scent of the day 2/28

Posted by Robin on 28 February 2023 185 Comments

It’s Tuesday and the last day of February. Birthdays: Linus Pauling and Bernadette Peters. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in L’Artisan Parfumeur Histoire d’Orangers. Tea at the moment is a lipstick mix: China black tea plus a pinch of Kusmi Violette and a pinch of Art of Tea Rose Black.

Reminder: 3/3 is World Wildlife Day. This year's theme: Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation. Wear a fragrance from a brand making an effort in the arena of biodiversity protection (you should have plenty of choice).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows the Robin Teapot Nester ("Robins like open-fronted nesting sites and often use man-made items such as flower pots, boxes, and kettles. Hence Wildlife World designed this purpose-built teapot nester to provide a perfect home"), £21.99 at The Wildlife Community or £21.50 at Vine House Farm, both in the UK. (In the US, you can get one from Amazon for $22.95.)

I’m wearing Jermyn Street by Floris today. It is supposed to go up to 89 degrees today, and azaleas are in full bloom, and the wisterias are just starting to bloom.

Oh my goodness. Jealous…it is chilly and grey and drizzly here. We won’t get azaleas for a couple more months at least.

I am looking forward to spring even though it seems so far away. I will try to compensate with scents reminding me the flowers, fresh spring air, greenery. I am wearing Goutal Eau de Camille, closing my eyes and imagining a garden full of beautiful flowers.
    Have a great week!!

I finished up on last week’s CP in Kerosene Broken Theories (was away from home last week), and today I’m easing my way into this week’s CP in Indochine. I don’t know why it feels to me like a celebration of African wildlife, but it does.

We were given the option to work from home today due to weather conditions. We only got one inch of snow in my area, so even though there was not a valid reason for not commuting today, I appreciate immensely that I am having a less stressful day at home, despite being so busy.

Lavishly sprayed on Chanel Coromandel, EdT. I don’t remember when was the last time I wore it and I am delighted to be wrapped by the warmth of such a beautiful scent. I brought my bottle to the front of my perfume cabinet to reach for it more often.

On my third cup of coffee with TJ brown sugar oat creamer and a toasted chia seed croissant.

    Happy Tuesday! ☕️

Yes, I finished the cabinet reorganization, including the samples I still think I could have put away more perfumes to be rehomed, but for now I am ok with it. I will try to keep doing it at least twice a year.

It’s snowing again here today; I’m ready for it to be done. I have to take public transit in to HQ today, and our public transit tends to have issues when it is cold and snowing (e.g., the doors freeze open).

SotD is Lush Turmeric Latte, for a cozy winter scent that’s also CP-compliant. (I mean, at least they’re very vocal about not testing on animals; I don’t know if Lush has done anything else specific to biodiversity, but I feel like they probably have as it fits with their brand.)

That teapot birdhouse is adorable! 🐣

Very tedious day yesterday doing credentialing for my next contract. Nothing like sitting in a waiting room full of people coughing and hacking (I was waiting to do a drug screen). 😷Thankfully they got me in and out fast! Also had to renew my BLS and the instructor was so windy I had a hard time keeping my eyes open. Plus, I was in Tacoma to get all this done and that’s probably one of my least favorite cities I’ve ever been to. Filth all over the place and it stinks like some kind of chemical soup. Almost afraid to breathe. Crime is so bad the Urgent Care had to hire security to patrol the property and parking lot to prevent customers cars from being broken into. He said every morning he has to come and give the boot to the rout who set up on their front entryway overnight. Lordy! 😵

Finally got a good sleep last night! Not sure if it’s because my shoulder is better or because I’ve gotten used to the new mattress. Either way, I’ve been missing long deep sleeps until last night. Plus, I’m getting more comfortable with the furnace. Every time the furnace would kick in, I’d wake up. Not used to heating with propane and there is a learning curve. I’m getting more comfortable with it now, as well as the other systems on board.

Pulled into our spot yesterday evening and heard what sounded like a thousand seals barking but it was getting dark already and drizzling (plus 🥶) to boot so we didn’t go check it out. Hoping they’ll be in the same place this morning but I’m not hearing the clamor. It’s been quite chilly up here and they are predicting rain/snow/frozen mix everyday for the next week. 🙄

Wearing Queen today for its lovely warm sweetness. Haven’t worn this one in a while and it seems extra sweet and a bit smoky today.

Geez, who’s windy now?! 😂 Have a great day, y’all!!

It starts the end of March in southern Washington. I’m thinking of taking these next few weeks to go back around the Olympic Peninsula and down the Oregon coast again to my favorite spot, Cape Perpetua, then spend a week or more there. Love that area! 🦭 🌊🌳🦌🦅🌲🏕

She’s getting used to it. She is riding much better in the crate, which I keep behind the drivers seat in the cab of the truck for long travel days. In the camper, I bought her a special fluffy dog bed and blanket and she really lurves those! The dinette area is U shaped, so the bed/blanket fits well in the curve of the U without being in the way of anything else. We both continue to send good thoughts your way! 💕

Sorry about Tacoma — I feel you. There *are* nice parts, but they’re generally not near I5 and unless you live there or go to the zoo, you don’t see them. That said, even though I had an apartment in one of the nicer neighbourhoods, the house behind me got raided one night and I’m pretty sure it was a meth lab.

And, yeah…the Tacoma aroma. But…I kind of liked living there, actually. It’s a lot lower key than Seattle.

Well, it’s any city these days, isn’t it? I just happen to have a lot of visits there for work related issues since I’ve been up here so long now. I think it’s especially “in your face” there though. And I don’t think it’s the “homeless” population so much as it is the “addicted” homeless, because they would sell their mother for a hit. San Fran used to be great too. It was my mothers favorite city EVER and she traveled all over the globe. But that was back in the 80’s. And San Jose! So wonderful songs were written about it…now they’re just like third world countries with all the petty (and not so petty) crime, filth and trash all over, people pulling down their pants on busy street corners to take a 💩. And who ever coined the term “Tacoma Aroma” should win a prize! SO accurate!

I woke up disoriented and not really sure what day it was, let alone what to do for the CP. I’m giving Les Indemodables Rose de Jamal a proper try, and I really like it. It’s neither soapy nor earthy but also somehow both. A unique experience. Coffee has helped me to realize that it’s Tuesday, and this week has a long way to go.

Unfortunately it won’t be, it’s a waterfall effect because I have to take money out of my IRA to pay this year, which creates a big tax bill for next year, and I have a big AC replacement bill coming next year which will trigger another withdrawal and tax bill, so it will continue like this for at least two more years. But yes, I’m grateful I remembered to pay the property tax in the nick of time.

I’m smelling great in Chanel Egoiste. On my skin, it wears like an aura of scent, smelling fabulous about 4″ away from my wrist but if I press my nose to my skin I can’t smell it. I’m cooking ham and bean and lit some incense earlier, my house smells great. Can you tell I’m home alone? It’s a nice break from caretaking.

Robins will build 2 or 3 new nests a season (for their 2 or 3 broods). I like to put out nesting material for them, but maybe a few bird houses would be better to give the mama birds a break. All of that nest building and baby raising sounds exhausting! And that pot is super cute.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! March already, can’t believe it. I have a sample of moth I am wearing for the CP ( though I know nothing about Zoologist policies). I remember how many moths used to batter against the living room windows at night when I was young and how rare that is now. Habitat decline, agriculture sprays, city lights have all made life tough for moths and they are such incredibly beautiful creatures.
If anyone wants a happy, non-murder series to watch I can recommend Happy Woman. It’s set in 60s London, and follows a young woman from Blackpool who moves to London, and finds work as an actor ( her Northern humour helps). Great performances from Gemma Arterton and Rupert Everett, and vintage 60s film footage is cut into the scenes so it has a great look.

I like it a lot, kind of spicy and fusty and dark but not heavy on me. I would probably buy a bottle if we had a better exchange rate and shipping. Definitely a night flying moth rather than a daytime, alpine or bush moth.

I’m wearing the scent that started my journey into all natural perfumes: Florascent Thé Vert. The current version is a lovely green tea and osmanthus scent, but I miss the original, which was just citrus notes (called “agrumen” in the original description) and green tea. However, the new version pairs up nicely with another scent I wanted to wear today, April Aromatics Liquid Dreams.
Florascent has a huge line up of perfumes but they are hard to find outside Germany. I first bought it from an online store called Saffron Rouge which is sadly no longer available. They had a great selection of natural skincare and perfumes. I’m just glad they were out there for a while.

I put on another sample this morning and now it is generic little amber littl cedar…don’t even remember what it is . I was looking at CarterandJane body oils and whatnot, which sound very luxurious and safe for sensitive skin. Anyone have any experience with these.? They are touting a “Lilacs in the Snow” scent, which sounds delightful.

Like Kanuka, I can’t believe it’s March already! The cicadas are out in force, and our cat is very happy, cicadas are evidently fun to catch and very tasty. We know Phaedra is eating several a day because she leaves the wings on the floor. That’s much better than catching other wee creatures, she certainly won’t put a dent in the cicada population.
Perfume-wise, I haven’t got very far with the CP, but I’m wearing Mary Greenwell Plum today, fruity but not too sweet.

I had never tried Dua but ordered a few 10 ml sprays when they had a good sale b/c I am forever curious. ;) My favorite of the bunch ordered is probably Vanilla Lemon Gelato which is an original creation I believe…Hey Sweetie which is a dupe for Oriana is also pretty good…probably better than the original which was kind of meh for me.

It depends, sometimes blue tea just means oolong, which isn’t blue at all…but that might just be a French thing (thé bleu is almost always oolong). So I think that’s often what is meant in perfumes.

In the US, blue tea will usually be an herbal flower tea, and properly blue when brewed.

p.s. did not mean to be pedantic about it! Actually have always wondered why oolongs are called blue, when neither the oxidized leaf or the brewed tea are even close to blue.

The tea I had in mind is blue pea flower, and it is either blue or purple depending on the pH. Lemon juice turns it various shades of purple depending on how heavy handed one is.

I do have some oolong teas that I haven’t brewed in a while, though.

I’m in 4 spritzes of Coromandel today for no other reason than that I felt like it :P

I am burning the Diptyque Ambre candle, which smells remarkably similar to the drydown of Coromandel. One of my favorites from the brand.

I had a lovely time last night having dinner with my friend in the city. I had brought her some cherry blossom snacks from Minamoto Kitchoan, which I recommend a visit if you are ever in Manhattan.

The flavor of cherry blossom flowers isn’t particularly distinct to me, but I do love the fragrant salted cherry leaves used to wrap their sakura mochi.

I had also dropped by Myzel, a nearby chocolatier with the widest selection of licorice I have ever seen. They let me sample a tender Finnish licorice that I enjoyed very much. I left with various truffles and chocolate coated orange peel, but no licorice this time. I shall have to go back!

You smell wonderful. And re your last paragraph on the topic of licorice, (and everyone else who likes licorice!) must try Lakrids by Bulow – a Danish licorice company that makes various licorice candies. We fell in love with the one coated in chocolate and then found other favorites coated in additional flavors as well. May sound weird, but they are excellent! Myzel’s has a fantastic selection of European licorice and chocolates. The last time I was there was for Christmas 2019. They are going now thru a very bad financial situation due to the pandemic and are even asking for donations to keep the store open. Unfortunately, they do not have the option to order online, only over the phone.
I have never tried cherry blossom snacks. Since Minamoto Kitchoan is close to Myzel’s, I will make a trip one of these weekends to the city and indulge in some sweets and snacks from both places. Thank you for all your foodie recommendations. I appreciate them. I am still craving for more of those delicious frankincense truffles!

Ohno, so sad to hear about Myzel’s financial situation :( I was honestly expecting them to have closed down during the pandemic, so I was quite surprised they are still open now, though it sounds like sales hasn’t bounced back.

I highly recommend Minamoto, their gift boxes are lovely and they have a spring themed one with cherry blossom sweets. So glad you enjoyed my recommendations! Enfleurage is sadly sold out of the frankincense chocolate now, but their owner did say that they are planning more collaborations with local chocolatiers, so I am keeping my eyes peeled.

I’m in Fzotic Unsettled today. Very pineappley and fresh. I’m enjoying it as a change, but Monserrat and Ummagumma remain my favorites.

Unsettled has one of the best pineapple notes in a perfume that I have come across!

How does it compare to L’Artisan Ananas Fizz? I’m still sad that I let that one slip away😥

Unfortunately I never got to smell Ananas Fizz. It was gone by the time I fell down the perfume rabbit hole.

Unsettled’s pineapple note is something you would expect to smell in the produce section of a grocery store. It’s a fresh pineapple that’s a little on the green side.

Sampling a couple of Nobile 1942s that have been rattling around my sample bin: MALVS and Muschio Nobile. The MALVS is a delicate combo of amber, myrrh, olibanum, and sandalwood, with a kick of lemon oil and pink pepper in the opening and vanilla and vetiver in the dry down. I am also getting a bit of an apple cider note. It is very light. Would be a good warm weather amber. I must be anosmatic to the musk in MN because it opened with a bit of sweetish florals, and then when poof! It’s the intensity of what I’d expect after washing my hands with one of those fancy, lightly scented bars of guest soap.

Tea today is Vanilla Bourbon from Georgia Tea Co. The 5-8 inches of snow we were suppose to get turned into 1-3, so no big deal. I think the kids in my city still got the day off tho, which is good because they haven’t had a snow day yet this year and it is such a singular delight.

The kids here were yelling up a storm but only starting mid-afternoon.

Being anosmic to a perfume is a seriously strange sensation. It’s like I know something is there, but it refuses to register.

Grey, gloomy and chilly weather twins with Robin today. There was supposedly some sleet in my area last night, but I didn’t see any when I looked outside. The rain finally moved out sometime after lunch this afternoon.

SOTD = LUSH Orange Blossom Perfume. There’s an odd topnote to this that I haven’t quite figured out. But I am liking the scent as a whole. So currently I am good for 4 out of the 5 travels sprays I have. The only one I haven’t tried yet is Pansy.

Yeah, especially since I was blind buying 3 out of the 5 perfumes! I got really lucky with that set.

Agreed with lillyjo above. I think we got a combo of snow and sleet since my car was almost cleared of snow this afternoon.

I think the “sleet” I got was a rumor! Just been too warm here for wintry precipitation.

We had sleet very briefly…I heard it tapping on the windows after dark last night and was surprised.

I worked from home today as I did not want to deal with the snow. By all accounts, it was very mild but I liked my sleep better. To tomorrow!

I mostly ran errands today. The weather was great. 45 and sunny. It will be back to freezing rain by morning.
Last week in a moment of stress I did some perfume shopping. My blind buy arrived today. My sotd is Alexander McQueen Luminous Orchid. I had started out ready to purchase something else, but I saw this for the same price and couldn’t resist. The good news is that I like it. It’s sweet and spicy. It does have some ambroxan but so far not enough to bother me. The bottle is very weighty and has a phenomenal sprayer. I have another package arriving next week, lol.

Enjoy your new perfumes! I ordered a full bottle of La Danza delle Libellule last week in the middle of a night when I was terribly stressed. I do not regret the purchase!

Was it a blind buy? And a successful one? Girl, you got the mojo! 😀
