Monday scent of the day 2/6

Posted by Robin on 6 February 2023 142 Comments

It's Monday, plus Waitangi Day, Bob Marley’s birthday and National Frozen Yogurt Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm starting a week of rose in Tauer Perfumes Phi — Une Rose de Kandahar.

Reminder: on 2/10, wear a fragrance with rose, if you have one. (This is a repeat from 2016).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Roses? I could do two weeks, no problem: one of my favourite notes. Today I figured I might as well do it up right, so I’m in a few drops of late-eighties Joy, a luxurious, heartrendingly beautiful rose. I still can’t believe it was discontinued: it seemed to be one of those bedrock scents like No. 5 or Shalimar that will be around forever. I have maybe a millilitre left and when it’s gone I don’t know what I’ll do: maybe wave it goodbye, maybe get some more….

I think we will see more participation this week than last :-)

Joy was so amazing. I bought my mom a small bottle of the Parfum years ago and wish I’d bought one for myself.

I can also do a week of roses, so I am trying to work with scents I wear infrequently. Today is Une Rose Chypree. I tend to forget my Tauer scents, especially those that are in sample sizes.

I can easily do a week of roses. Yesterday I accidentally joined the CP with a random sample from my ELdO kit that was a huge, straight-up rose lasting all day: Experimentum Crucis. It worked, considering I went to a love-themed concert that Mr. Ockeghem’s group put on (granted, Renaissance love).

Will have to think about what to wear today (still early here, just got the kid out the door to her early, off-timetable class). Lots of options…

Went with MCMC Kept for my SotD, plus my usual SMN rosewater toner. Kept is a nice, clean rose which used to be one of my go-to scents, but I haven’t worn it much recently. It only lasts about half the day, which is perfect — can move on to another of what I realized is about 20 rose perfumes.

Accidentally CP compliant. I spotted Rose Barbare and decided to give it another try, rather than wearing something I knew would be a delight. RB has yet to connect with me, nor I with it. I am interested in the spicy part, and the rose is pleasant. We will see as the day goes on. I think it is a simple, clean kind of scent so far. I have a lingering, mild head cold, so my nose is filtering fragrances less efficiently, but maybe highlighting certain notes?

Since I am not a Costco member, the website won’t tell me the cost. I will have to ask my stepdaughter. You don’t need too many sprays so I was thinking of just getting a travel spray at Nordies. It is under $100 and I think it would last quite a while.

Starting the day off with Penhaligons Amaranthine because I ate a slightly underripe banana and thought of it. Anybody remember this weird little gem?

Roses are heavily underrepresented in my collection, so I’ll have to reach deep into my decant and samples, but here are candidates for the week:

    – Chanel Egoiste (I can do a week of this, no problem)
    – Hermes Rose Ikebana (more citrus rhubarb than rose, but hey)
    – Chanel Les Eaux Paris-Paris (fresh rose with a patchouli base)
    – Les Indemodables Rose de Jamal (smells like whole stalk of rose)

Only tangentially CP compliant since I grabbed the first bottle that came to hand, which turned out to be N 5. Somewhere in all of that must be some rose?
I was in hurry to meet the farrier. Sheba, the Haflinger elder, didn’t need her toes trimmed, so only my big baby Ceasar got a trim. Our farrier is this very down to earth woman, who both horses whinny to when they see her coming- they like her and she likes them, and this is a quick, delightfully drama free process! The humans had the usual conversation about the price and availability of hay, and the impact of last week’s bitter cold on aging human joints, and she was off to her next appt. , leaving a trail of competent fresh energy behind her.
Hope everyone’s Monday morning starts off so pleasantly!
I have roses lined up for the rest of the week, I think. I love these little group projects! Another way to bee connected!

I could probably also do a couple of weeks of rose-centred perfumes.I’ll definitely try and wear my top 5 this week, starting off today with Etro’s ManRose. If you think Portrait of a Lady is too much, this is a wonderful soft iteration of the genre. The rose-geranium ratio is beautiful, with a soft patchouli note in the background.I’m in the far-far drydown right now,and it is wonderful as the sun sets.

There is a definite dna-match to POAL,I think in the basic structure of the rose-patchouli combo.”Office-friendly” POAL if you will.Which I find hilarious as I recently gifted a colleague a tiny 7,5ml poal, and she wears it to work in tiny-tiny amounts and I adore the wafts from her as she passes by!

National Frozen Yogurt day? Anyone else remember TCBY? (maybe it’s a Midwest thing) I worked there one summer during college. Man I loved making the waffle cones, mmm, that smell.😋 I’ve always been more of an ice cream fan though so I wasn’t really tempted to be eating on the job.
I’m in Le Labo Musc25, which does list rose in the notes. Will thunk this sample today. Also in Rose Jam shower gel. Got a sample from the SA when I stopped in over the weekend. I’ve never tried it before and I thought perfect for this week’s cp!

Looking forward to a week of, “Oh neat, does that have rose too?” I do have at least a couple of explicitly rosy scents, so will be set up for Friday. Currently wearing the last of an unlabelled decant – I am guessing Climat: it’s unassumingly pleasant, but I ended up giving away the almost-full bottle to someone who liked it more.

I went with Papillon Tobacco Rose today. Not frozen yogurt, but I think tonight’s dessert will be local company, Ellenos’ Greek yogurt limited edition brownie batter flavor. It’s got the brownie batter mixture on the bottom and the plain Greek yogurt on top. We couldn’t resist trying it when we saw it at the grocery yesterday. We’ve also had success with their lemon curd, passion fruit, and pumpkin pie flavors among others.

Wearing La Panthere EDP today. Not rose centric at all but it does contain rose. It’s wearing much nicer today in the cold than it did the last time I tried it. It can be a bit much for me. I only did one spritz and it will subside enough by the time I go to my dentist appointment this afternoon.

Rose is not one of my favorite notes, but does the Perfume Cabinet contain enough rose scents for a week? Why sure. I just have to remember which ones they are, that’s the hard part.

SOTD is Dior Oud Ispahan, rose/oud, but very refined, of course. Goes perfectly with my sweats and fuzzy slippers. And hauling the trash carts out to the curb…

Good heavens — just when I think I’ll have trouble fulfilling a CP and/or that I don’t care for a particular note, it turns out that practically everything I own could be construed as CP-compliant. Everything seemingly has some rose in it! I chose Tam Dao edt for my SOTM, having forgotten the rose theme this week, and was very surprised when it came up in the search-by-notes thingie. Some other surprises were Paris-Deauville, Alahine, L’Eau de Tarocco and Azemour. It will be a fun week. 🌹

I’m wearing Patou Sublime from my mini bottle. It does have rose, though that note is subordinate to some of the other florals. In this case I think rose gives it rounding out or body, though it’s not the star.

I like rose fine in perfumes, it’s just not one of my top or favorite notes. For some strange reason, it seems to me that rose is a scent that really belongs in the flower. That’s crazy because I don’t think that way about other perfume notes, it might just be that a rose that smells really good is, well, sublime.

Someday it would be fun to take a class or go on a tour or participate in an experiment comparing all the different kinds of roses and how they smell, e.g., Turkish rose, Moroccan rose, whatever others there are. Sometimes perfume note lists differentiate based on color, like pink or red rose. Hmmm.

A rose week! That’s definitely a CP I can get into. I’m starting with Le Galion’s La Rose, it’s not heavy, but it’s not fleeting either. Fragrantica says it has an aquatic note, which would usually make me run a mile, but I don’t get that here.

I went with orange blossom today, Orangerie Musicale which I finally got some months back and became a favorite just behind Au Pays de la Fleur d’oranger Néroli Blanc. Tonight it*s Hanae Mori ‘Butterflies’ in parfum concentration, very moreish, almost too sweet, it’s a guilty pleasure. Like many I can do many days of roses I’ve realized.

Sampling LAP Vetiver Ecarlate today but am looking forward to using a rose & vanilla bath melt from Lush tonight, post-workout. For the VE, I get grapfruit (mostly peel), vetiver, and a burst of tomato leaf in the opening, but it morphs into a more generic fresh green note after about 15 minutes. Shame because I love the smell of tomato leaves and it is so distinctive. I still need to try the Deteter and CBIHP tomato frags (although I expect they won’t last much longer than 15 mintues either).

Tea today is a vanilla-scented black tea from Georgia Tea Co.

I started watching season 2 of Flight Attendant on HBO and it seems that Santal 33 may be a plot point. I also spotted a Byredo bottle on a dresser, but couldn’t identify the others.

Vaguely CP compliant in original Silences edp, which has rose in there somewhere, though it’s not especially dominant.

I once did a February of roses. Rebel me wanted to do a week of Shalimar and so I am!

SOTD = Guerlain Shalimar Ode a La Vanille Sur la Route du Mexique

Oh my! Most vanilla forward out of the 3 I’ve worn since Saturday, but of course we know there is one more with lots of vanilla. 💖

    In other news:
    1. I paid cash at the restaurant where we had our dinner / drinks after our Escape Room event. We did separate checks so as not to get into a tangle of who had what and for how much. My total came to $36 and change. I used a $50 💵. The server had the audacity to ask if I wanted change back? I am usually generous with the tip but I wasn’t about to give her almost 40%! Service was good but not exceptional. What is up with expectation of large tips?

    2. We’re not required to wear masks in the office nor anywhere in the building. I don’t; so far the only places where I continue to wear a mask is while commuting (I take it off once I am past Macys Herald Square) and at grocery stores. As you can imagine, in an older building, elevators fit 4 people comfortably; however, because of the no mask situation, I strongly prefer no talking inside the elevator. It makes me angry when people continue to chat away inside the elevator — couldn’t they wait until they’re more out in the open? This is probably one of the only things I couldn’t control that makes me want to punch someone (and I am not the violent type).

I started at 5am in vintage Coco edt for Mr ringthing’s hip replacement surgery. Everything went really well, his was the first surgery, he did great in PT and we were home by 2. Amazing. When I got home and settled, I put on a bit of Inner Sanctum, rose and incense. I could probably wear this everyday this week but I have other roses I love, too. 🌹
