Tuesday scent of the day 1/31

Posted by Robin on 31 January 2023 216 Comments

It's Tuesday and the last day of January, plus National Backward Day. Birthdays: Alan Lomax, Jackie Robinson. RIP Cindy Williams. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Ashes from Clandestine Laboratories. Tea at the moment is a floral blend: a pinch of Rose Black from Art of Tea, a pinch of Kusmi Violette, plus a spoonful from a mix of few Assams from Upton.

Reminder: on 2/3 we're doing Edition 8 of the Picture Challenge, which is detail from Women of Shangri-La, 2002, by Yayoi Kusama. You can see the entire installation if you scroll down here (I cannot post it for copyright reasons). Extra reading: Yayoi Kusama at Wikipedia, Dot on: The rise and rise of Yayoi Kusama at Thames and Hudson, 'Determined to have her story told': Retrospective casts new light on Yayoi Kusama's seven-decade career at CNN, Yayoi Kusama: the world's favourite artist? at The Guardian, The Infinity Experience With Yayoi Kusama at TheViewDeck.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is the teapot from The Me That I Adore (The Grand Set), 2013, Yayoi Kusama, made by the Nikko Company for the Mori Arts Center Museum Shop. Bottom image is detail from English: Yayoi Kusama Exhibition via Wikimedia Commons, some rights reserved.

LOL- that would be a good poll, wouldn’t it? How many perfumes are on your “Buy FB List”? Is your list growing or dwindling? What is the most recent purchase you have made from your 2 Buy list? What is the most recent addition to your list? Etc.

Well, I have it on my “to buy” list, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. I get distracted too. However, you are right in that it is gorgeous.

Today I’m in Boucheron Trouble. Not gonna lie: it’s really basic, a very ordinary sweet amber, nothing like their luxury image. But I like it a lot.

Most fragrances don’t match their brands’ luxury image, right?

True, but I’m thinking back to the first of their fragrances, which really were expensive-smelling and luxuriously packaged in jewellike bottles: Boucheron, Boucheron Pour Homme, Jaipur, Jaipur Homme, and Initial, specifically. It started to go down the toilet after around 2000.

You smell great. I had a bottle of Trouble but think I sold it in the Great Purge of 2020. ;) It’s a lovely root beer scent on me.

I cam imagine selling it to an enthusiast: I wouldn’t say it’s essential, because how many ambers do I have? A lot! But it really is pleasantly root-beery atop all that warmth, just the sort of thing for a cold snowy day (which it is).

I made the mistake of selling my FB in a garage sale in 2014 before we moved from TX to AR. Luckily, was able to find three 30 ml minis before they disappeared from discounters.

I have a bottle of the dry body oil, but I’m pretty sure it has turned. ☹️ I’ll probably try it once more and then toss it if it’s no longer wearable.

What a shame! It’s one of the perils of being a collector. I have a few bottles that I can’t bring myself to part with but which I can no longer deny are on their way out: my Spellbound is weirder every time I put it on, not just the top, and I think I have to grit my teeth and turf it.

It’s a 50 ml bottle w/ a little over half left in the original box and I would be happy to send it your way if interested. :)

I am wearing Mimosa from my Commodity Discovery Set. I thought that it would feature mimosa the flower, so imagine my surprise when I sprayed and got a very realistic citrus fragrance. Mimosa the drink, not mimosa the flower. At this stage it smells as good as Azemour.

Scent of the day is Serge Lutens Fille en Aiguilles. Been wearing it for years, don’t know how to say it or spell it-have to look it up every time! But it smells so good in the crisp winter air. It’s snowing here-pretty lacy flakes. I also wanted to wear Borneo, so I put one spritz on a cotton ball, and that’s in my pocket. It’s pungent-I can smell it through my jeans. Kind of like this combination. Normally I’m not a person who wears more than one scent at once.

Hope Tuesday is treating everyone gently so far!

I’m stumped for this week’s cp. I’m doing a week of my most complimented perfumes. Has that ever been a cp? Wear your most complimented fragrance?
Anyway, today I’m in Glossier You. Yesterday was Molecule 01 for a super busy Monday.
My car said -5 this morning, but I am not even going to complain because THE SUN IS OUT!!!🤩🌞 Holy cow, it’s been too long! And this is 2 days in a row! Today I’m in my office with the east facing windows, so I am soaking up the rays as we speak.😎 Love it.

Interesting. I like Glossier You and I find it is well-liked. My adult son called me last weekend asking for recommendations for a perfume for his girlfriend, commenting that she likes understated scents and I suggested Glossier You, since it seems a safe bet.

Picking fragrance for someone else is SO difficult in general, even if you have some idea of his/her taste.

I also suggested Phlur Missing Person. Needs to be something he can get at chain stores. Niche is too pricy and inaccessible for him.

I’m back in Como Lake Note d’Amore from my sample. I liked it quite a bit yesterday, and needed something quick and not terribly obtrusive for meetings at my kid’s school this morning.

I wasn’t ready to wake up to snow this morning. It’s been unnaturally cold here, but I wasn’t ready for that. Oh well, it’ll be gone by this afternoon, at which point apparently we’ll be in a freezing rain mess.

I was sorry to hear about Cindy Williams’ passing. Laverne & Shirley was one of my favourite TV shows when I was little.

Sample of MDCI La Ravissante. This is a really soft and pretty fruity floral and if I had lots of money…or if it came in a smaller size…. I’ll take points for the colors and for the fruit on the table of Yayoi’s full installation of the women. I love the patterns she makes.

    33 degrees and drizzling.
Having my second cup of coffee.

Wearing Arquiste Anima Dulcis. Decant thunked! I really love this scent and I am going to miss it. The chocolate, paprika, cinnamon notes are delicious and very comforting. This is definitely full bottle worthy. To my buy list it goes, but like all the bottles in that list, it is not a priority anymore.

    Happy Tuesday! ☕️

SOTD was Serge Lutens “Chergui” but I am now happily sniffing my wrists where I have a 2015 pre-reformulation Amouage “Interlude” on one wrist and the reformulated 2019 version on the other. On the one hand they do smell very similar, especially at first. On the other hand it confirms my hunch that the older version somehow has more depth where it counts.

I can’t say how pleased I am to have this perfume back in my life. For me it smells beautiful and melancholic – the incense is more the ashes of something that has gone than a live presence. Getting it back isn’t like getting an old friend back; it’s like getting a part of myself back.

I suspect you guys are the only folk I know who will “get” this. 🙂

Thanks! I should have been clear it is “Interlude Man”. Worth a sniff in current formulation but IMO the dry-down in particular is better in the original. I have not tested the latest “Iris” variant nor the very expensive, new “Interlude Man 53” with 53% perfume oil concentration – sounds great but $$$. 😬

It is one of my favorite fragrances. Whenever I wear it, Nuit Etoilee takes me back to something my Mom wore back in the mid 70s/early 80s. Neither I or my Mom can remember which fragrance it is. But we both agree — its very similar to a perfume she used to wear when I was little.

Rabbits! It’s been hot here -by our standards( around 24C) and the smell from the nearby pine plantation is wafting in the air, must be the resin. The leaves on the silver birch have started to look slightly drab, not yellow but losing some of their brightness now. February is usually our hottest month. I’ve been testing CDG Ganja and enjoying it. I don’t get a lot of cannabis from it but I want to try it again…I need to get my hands on the tester myself. Today I’m wearing Shade, still dark but the birds are waking now. My favourite time of day.

I’m intrigued by the Picture Challenge — are we limited to that actual picture, or can we take inspiration from other parts of the exhibit? Our family saw the Infinity Rooms exhibit when it came to our city and it was marvelous!

I’ve been AWOL for several days because my dear FIL died last Monday and we went out of state for his funeral which was yesterday. Two sad Mondays. My SOTD since Saturday has been Nicolai’s New York, because that’s why my husband had in his travel bag — I forgot to bring anything else. I love it on him, and now I’m sort of obsessed with wearing it myself, as it was a source of great comfort in recent days.

Hi foxbins. You seem to know a lot about house problems so I have one for you. My 3 month water bill is extremely high compared to my past bills. I don’t see or hear any leaks. However in the last 3 months I did have a leaky bathtub faucet a broken toilet which caused a mini flood and a broken water heater. All issues have since been fixed, but do you think that’s the cause of the high bill? Or should I keep looking for leaks?
      Also you smell great!

Hi, Lillyjo! I’ll bet your high water bill was due to all three things happening within one billing cycle. The other place I would look is outdoors, but only if you have a hose hookup or pipes running on the outside of the building. Sometimes you can have an outdoor leak and not know it.

Thanks for your reply! I do have outside faucets but that water was shut off in the fall and won’t be turned on again until late spring. I will wait to see the next water bill. Hopefully it will be back to normal.

If you have an on-premises water meter, you culd try shutting of all taps (faucets) and making sure no appliance that consumes water is running (washing machine, dishwasher, some tumble driers…). If the meter figure is still merrily rising, you likely have a leak somewhere *after* the meter.

I don’t know how it works where you live, but back in the UK the water company was liable for the pipes up to your boundary and the householder liable thereafter. Unless the meter was at the boundary itself, folk could face a big bill for a leak under their garden which didn’t show up on the meter.

Zebras are my favorite animal. I went for a walk earlier and walked by a cafe offering “zebra mocha latte” — wish I’d gotten one as I was freezing but alas, I am also too cheap. When I got home, I saw that today was the International Zebra Day. So I did some reading — turns out there was a study showing that their stripes are *not* for camouflage!

OMG, what a morning! Everything has just been so hectic the past two weeks I feel like I need to spend some time in a sensory deprivation tank to get my balance back…

Wearing Casmir today but it’s not soothing or calming enough for me. A very nice maintenance man here at the hospital changed out my battery for me. Super nice guy even though he was a bit of an Eeyore. Turned the key and holy cow! I though my catalytic converter had been stolen while I was gone. Suddenly, the van is LOUD! Anyway, took the old battery back for a minuscule refund, and the nice NAPA man checked the van and said everything is intact. I have no idea while it’s suddenly so loud. Like drag race loud! Won’t win any friends sounding like this…😬

Waiting for the world to recalibrate…

You might have a little hole in the muffler or the exhaust pipe. Salt air near the coast and salt on winter roads can corrode them.

Or is Moby loud in comparison to your nice new truck? I imagine it’s pretty silent in that cab.

Yes, the truck is quiet as a mouse considering it’s a 3500. DE-lux driving and riding! The van is a bit noisier inside in general, but not like this. I mean it’s BAH-RUM-RUM-RUMBLE and the faster you go the louder it gets. Having it looked at next week…

Still on a patchouli kick and may stay in it this whole week or until I get sick of it. Today it’s Coromandel EDT, which is already almost completely gone from my skin but still clinging to the inside of my turtleneck. It’s because I used my dabber mini instead of my old evaporating but very strong decant. Sigh, I wish I’d transferred the decant to a better bottle a long time ago. It’s one of those 30ml bottles with no cap and a little plastic piece that goes under the sprayer to stop it from spraying. Unfortunately, this type of bottle allows for evaporation from the sprayer hole. Oh well, I’ll cherish what I still have left of the strong, good stuff.

Also, can I complain a little about Zoologist? Or rather about my persistence in trying new perfumes from them even though it’s been a long time since I’ve found one I love or even really like. I ordered 5 samples of their recent releases from Ministry of Scent (formerly Tigerlily) and don’t like a single one. I had to scrub two off, almost scrubbed a third, and didn’t even bother to put the other two on skin after spraying them on paper. So disappointing. If only their perfumes lived up to their fun packaging. I know many others find much more success with them so I’m guessing it’s a me thing. I do love Civet and Bee (of those currently available) and like a few others. I think I need to make myself stop buying their samples though.

I’ll be doing a freebie of many Zoologist samples soon after I’ve gone through they ones I need to retest.

I was really hopeful for Harvest Mouse but it reminds me of Imaginary Authors Memoirs of a Trespasser but with a malt note. I’ve realized malt is not a note or flavor I really enjoy. HM wound up a bit cloying on me, but I hope you have more success. Reviews of it on Fragrantica seem to be mostly positive.

I did like Sacred Scareb. I had forgotten about that. I would try Cardinal first if I were you. I found it to be too masculine on me, but you may like it. Scents are so different on everyone. It kind of turned on me too, but I am thinking it was either the musk or the leather. I know the reviews on Fragrantica voted mostly for unisex or more male.

I can also send you any of the others that didn’t work for me.

I figure that Zoologist isn’t for me. I’ve liked a couple of their scents that I have sampled, but they all start out very loud on me, only to fade into a skin scent after 2 hours. I find that kind of volume drop off super annoying!

I liked Bee and Cow. Camel and Elephant seemed fine but I wouldn’t go beyond the samples I have. The original Bat was interesting, but not something I’d wear on a day-to-day basis.

But then, these days, that’s pretty much any line for me. Except maybe Chanel Exclusifs, but combine cost and lack of lasting power and it’s rare I buy one. (31 Rue Cambon is the exception, and I’m circling Box of Eels except it doesn’t last on me.)

Zoologist is mostly miss for me too. I liked Chipmunk and Hummingbird enough to buy, plus Beaver which I bought for sentimental reasons but don’t wear. I have a decant of Sacred Scarab and want to try Harvest Mouse. Cardinal was not good on me. Many I haven’t really tried, will make more of an effort when I get back to Montreal this summer.

It’s a grey day with rain moving in. I wore Act and Acre’s rebalancing scent to yoga (just a smidge) and now I’m wearing Dzongkha. Guess I need some balance and contemplation today?

I used the Lush Eggnog soap this morning, and holy moly it smells delicious. Creamy vanilla with a hearty sprinkle of fresh nutmeg. So, exactly like eggnog!

Sampling LAP Tonka Blanc to keep a similar vibe going with my SOTD. I’m finding it pretty but underwhelming. Tonka bean dusted with powdered Tonka, and not much else happening. I definitely don’t cauliflower or any vegetal notes.

    Sipping on FM’s Victoria Gray.

Watched House of Gucci last night and now I’m curious as to which family members were involved in the early Gucci perfumes.

I used LUSH’s Good Karma… Everybody Needs Some shower gel this morning so we were house twins today. Love it! But it’s for serious patch heads only. And potentially Van Halen fans, LOL.

Today I’m wearing my newest acquisition, Cire Trudon Bruma. This is such a lovely iris. I got a travel size, and I’m not sure if I will put a FB on my list, since it’s very soft and lasting power is not great. But very pretty while it’s around! An extrait strength would be marvelous.

I am finally back home after a long trip, resting on my couch in Chanel Egoiste 😌

I recovered my decant and sample collection from my parents’ home. Unfortunately most of them dried up from years ago, only leaving a little oil sludge behind. I’m making a mental note to wear my decants up because there is no point in letting them go to waste.

Some gems I recovered included a tiny sample of Chanel Cuir de Russie EDT and a mini Shiseido Feminine de Bois.

Quick post since I am in the middle of household tasks! Yucky weather here today; cold, cloudy and clammy. No snow flakes that I know of, though.

SOTD = still in Narciso Poudree. But I am getting restless, so my little streak of perfume monogamy will be coming to an end soon.

I almost re-tested Poudre today. I was at Macy’s looking for the new NR, which they didn’t have. All their testers were behind the counter though and I didn’t feel like talking to the SA. Maybe next time.

I was hoping to never have to complain about property taxes but boy oh boy, it had hit inflationary levels. I think there should be a discount for people who never sent a kid to public school. I have a townhouse, medium sized, and I am paying almost $9,000 a year plus $3,100 per year on maintenance fees!

Wow, that’s pretty crazy! Our property taxes don’t pay for education (oh, Canada), but mine on a 3BR townhouse are about $2500 US. That said, my strata (condo) fees are $5500 US.

Also, my taxes went up 10% this year; they said is because my house is worth a lot more…but given the decreases in the market at the end of the year it’s not worth nearly what they say. Grr.

In Montreal I am paying $4500 a year for property & school tax plus $7500 a year in condo fees on a 1000 sq ft condo, so we’re even. :-).

I’m in Coromandel today. So glad the work day is over, I had a presentation today that was stressful. Well, all public speaking is stressful to me! I’m very glad to be done.

Tonight I’m making a green curry lentil stew. It was a surprise hit with the family the last time I made it, I had sort of invented it using whatever I had in the fridge. My son said he liked it much more than the green curry chicken I usually make!
