Monday scent of the day 1/23

Posted by Robin on 23 January 2023 211 Comments

It's Monday and National Pie Day. Birthdays: Stendhal, Édouard Manet, Derek Walcott. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Lubin Idole for a rainy Monday morning.

Reminder: on 1/27, wear a fragrance by Narciso Rodriguez, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Natalia Vodianova for the Narciso Rodriguez capsule collection at Zara, 2022.

I don’t have a perfume by that brand.

Today its rainy, foggy, gray and cold. Perfect day to curl up with a book.
Right now I am sipping a cappuccino made at home. We are out of almond milk, which is what I usually use, so this one is with regular milk and I forgot how filling milk is.

    I am in Ninfeo Mio

I usually never watch Persolaise (however you spell it) perfume review youtube videos but one came up on my feed with him wearing this outrageous colored shirt. Not sure how true this is, but he reviews Songes, and mentions briefly that Goutal are going back to their original bottle or something similar. Just thought I would mention.

My Ninfeo Mio is an a green colored original shaped bottle with a thin gold bow. For me, this is very elegant. I did a swap with a generous NSTer and I am forever thankful.

Goutal fan here too, and I loved their special edition coloured bottles-I have the same bottle of NM as you :)

I’m in Hermes Narcisse Blue-the soap, body wash, moisturizing gel, and cologne. It’s a beautiful dry narcissus scent – and the coloured bottle pleases me to no end :)

The Goutal line is very delicate and elegant – I think their older style bottles reflect that

Enjoy your cloud of Hermes scents

In the mood for Clinique Chemistry, a long-discontinued men’s floral fougère as crisp and refined as a freshly ironed white poplin shirt. Not that I am anywhere as polished, but it sure smells good.

Oh, most definitely! I own a lot of things that are *way* more sophisticated than I am. I could never dress to match them, but as long as I smell good, what do I care?

You can proceed with your day, thinking that your very posh perfume makes you far more sophisticated than those wearing expensive clothes while having no idea what they are trying to represent. :-)

Was Chanps Lunaires in your set? I purchased that not too long ago and love it. IMHO you would have to be a tuberose lover to really appreciate it. I love tuberose so it was a no brainer for me.

Haven’t yet decided on a SOTD…need to get in the shower soon. It probably won’t be CP-compliant, since I only have one Narciso perfume. Another long day ahead, after a long weekend of work.

Yesterday, though, I was able to sample Shalimar MVP against Shalimar EDT, thanks to an incredibly generous NSTer. And MVP truly is beautiful. It takes all the things that are a bit much for me in Shalimar (mostly the powder) and gets them under control, yet is still very much Shalimar. And the hint of smoke in the top notes! Ah well, best for my pocketbook that there’s no way to get a FB.

I’m in Narciso edt (black cube) from a travel spray, and might stick with this all week. It’s very quiet and work friendly. I’ll save white cube for Friday. I have a massage scheduled for Friday, can’t wait!

Happy Monday! I don’t have any Narciso so I’m going to do a week of vintage. It also suits me feeling nostalgic lately.

Starting the week off in vintage No 5. I hadn’t been a big No 5 fan until discovering the vintage with its mellowed aldehydes.

I only have one tiny sample of Narciso Rodriguez For Her that I will save for Friday, but this morning the big bottle of Alba reached out and grabbed my arm. (It’s a hefty bottle.)

There are so many Narciso Rodriguezes! I tried looking up my NRFH sample on fragrantica, and I can at least tell that it’s not “white cube”, but there are alternate photos of it as a pinkish cube with a black interior (the edt) or a clear cube with a pink interior (the edp) and I have no idea which my sample is. I might still have the packing list from STC and it might say which it is, so if I get inspired I’ll go dig through the “Fragrance Obsession” file folder.

I only have one Narciso scent that I will save for Friday, so
    I am doing a week of L’Artisan.
Today, I am wearing L’Artisan Mure et Musc layered with the body lotion, from minis received from a very generous NSTer.

I reorganized 80% of my perfume cabinet this past weekend. I put away many full bottles that went to the goodbye pile. I gave a couple of them to one of the cleaning ladies in my building. She was very happy and thankful, which made me feel really good. Next weekend, I have to go thru decants and samples. I am determined to keep mostly what I enjoy.

    Happy Monday! 🌞

Good luck with your decants! Reorganizing decants and samples is more painful than the full bottles.

I also have to go thru my BBW body lotions and mists. I am thinking about leaving the ones that are still good, but that I don’t reach for often, in the office restrooms. I can easily cover our 5-story building! 😅

I find my BBW lotions have mostly held up. I use old faithfuls. But, the horror of one gone bad is frightening to look at!

BBW lotions usually hold up for a long time! Just very few have gone bad on me after many years of having them. I have a lot, so I have to make sure all of them can still be used.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any NR so won’t be participating in the CP this week. Awhile back I had NR For Her, but I tired of it.

    SOTD is Zoologist Civet.

Question for the day-I was in Sephora the other day and tried the Chanel No 5 EDT. I could not believe how much I liked it. Do any of the rest of you enjoy it better than the perfume? I haven’t bought it yet, but if I do I may give someone the rest of my perfume. I have probably 3/4 of a bottle of it left and would hate it to go to waste.

It *is* a fascinating conundrum, isn’t it? You’d think all the concentrations of a scent would be really similar, but sometimes you just favour one very specific version.

I have tried a number of versions of Mitsouko over the years — a vintage-ish extract and the newer stuff, plus a couple of versions of the EDP — and the one I like the best by a huge margin is the nineties EDT I have, because it’s ferocious in a way that none of the others have seemed to be. (Mitsouko shouldn’t be polite.) Same is true of No. 5 and a few other scents: I like the EDT best because it seems to have more to say.

They do say the edt is the closest version to original No.5.I enjoy both, but only added No.5 very very late in my perfume quest to my collection. My favorite version still is the Elixer Sensuel,a sort of body serum. It’s a veil of No.5 whenever I use it,subtle and precious(my bottle is 90% full, discontinued!!)

Congratulations! It must be awful to lose your sense of smell, and such a relief to feel it returning. (Someone once asked me in the middle of conversation about fragrance, “What would happen if you ever lost your sense of smell?”, and I said, “I could never be truly happy again.” People who don’t really give it a second thought don’t understand how important it can be to some of us.)

I was at a special screening of the movie Tar last night (fantastic) and for the first time in ages there was an audience of more than 10 people . Three seats along, a couple was speaking in French and, goodness me, it filled me with a longing to travel . I couldn’t stop listening. And then they continued talking through the opening credits…and the first scene. Kind of like a travel nightmare, when the beautiful fantasy begins to turn sour. They did stop but so many people arrived late, had phone glowing etc etc. such a great movie. I think the first ten minutes feel a bit too stagey ( the interview scene) but it settles down and the filming/ shots are so precise and tight. Not a dud performance in the whole thing. I’ve seen Banshees of Insherin, Fabelmans, Babylon recently and Tar outshines them all. Wearing Mitsouko, perfect.

I *loved* The Banshees of Inisherin (my husband lasted 20 minutes) and I really do need to see Tár (which does seem like the sort of movie at which you would wear Mitsouko, based on the trailer). Your theatrical experience is why I almost never go see a movie in the cinema, though. Too many people don’t know how to behave.

This was the first time in a year the audience has topped 15 people ( last time was Dune) so most films pass quietly., and without Covid worries. I still love going to movies as often as possible but hate the ten to twenty minutes of ads and trailers that often go with them. No perfume sightings in Tar but a few nods to pencils ( caran d’ache) which was nice.

I did see it but didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would. For mature women I would go with the Australian movie Nitram and the great performance from Judy Davis . Chilling movie though.

Parallel Mothers (Pedro Almodovar) is worth watching for Penelope Cruz’s performance. And Samantha Morton has been in some good roles…not ‘mature’ but good

I love Judy Davis–so talented. Completely different type of movie, but she was both great and hilarious in The Dressmaker which we recently watched.

Day 3 of vacation and I have just been hanging around the house accomplishing nothing and loving it. Of course I still have something to complain about. Remember about 2 years ago when I paid a professional company to give my yard real grass? It turned out very nice and I was happy. Today the gas company is tearing up my yard because they are still in the process of redoing the gas lines in the city. They say they will fix everyone’s lawn in the spring. I hope so. My sotd is Coco edt.

There is always something to complain about! That’s half the fun! Our street had one company allowed to dig up and put wires underground. The town told no one and our yards looked like gigantic moles on steroids plowed through. At least no promises were made, so you have a leg up!

We had a very nice time at the wedding over the weekend. This was the second of my beloved’s nieces to get married, so I’m getting quite used to being some sort of step-aunt.
I don’t have anything from Narciso Rodriguez, but I’m happily continuing the favourite colour theme from a couple of weeks ago, and I’m wearing an orange dress with Mugler’s Eau Luminescente.

I have exactly one perfume for the CP: Narciso. I bought a rollerball to try out because the wonderful heroine of the JK Rowling dectective series buys it at Harrods. (I think. This brand is so confusing and I was going by the description of the bottle, IIRC. )

Narciso isn’t bad, but I was a tad disappointed. Surely JK Rowling could have found something more individual for her in the vast array at Harrods. I would chalk it up to inexperience, but the character’s previous choices seem to have been Premier Figuier and Carnal Flower. Maybe Narciso just works really well on JK Rowling or someone she knows?

A co-worker is currently reading that book, and is quite astounded at the very personal information revealed therein. She related some details to me and I was completely disgusted and find the whole debacle revolting. The co-worker is quite enamored with the book, but she is having quite the opposite effect than the book intended. I think it was meant to bring the readers over to harry and what’s her names side, but most people find it, and them, even more dislikable after reading it. I’m curious as to your take when you’ve completed it.

Just waking at 11am after more than 12 hours of sleep. Guess I was tired! I feel like I have a lot going on, but really, it’s going on mostly in my head , which can be exhausting. 🙃

I’m in the last vestiges of Shalimar MVP but will go with something else after I fully wake up. It’s a rare sunny day and who know how long that will last? So I’ll probably go with something a bit summery.

This is a pre-reading (I’ll have forgotten most of it by poll time #old) poll review of a book I picked up recently at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center. Lord know there’s hundreds of books out there on this group of folks who somehow managed to cross the US east to west and maintain life and limb, and many of the books are great. Thinking of Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose, one familiar to many. But, I picked up “The Essential Lewis and Clark,” a book taken directly from their journals. It was edited to reveal the human experience more than the scientific and mapmaking entries, which were edited out. I love hearing it from the horses mouth, so to speak. Two things became apparent to me immediately:

    1) Their wonder and delight in the astounding landscapes and the fertility of the land. The massive herds of ungulates, their frequency in predator encounters (grizzlies, cougars, wolves, etc.,) and the beauty of the land that left them both speechless.

    2) Their complete and total disregard of animal and Native American life. If they saw an animal that interested then, they killed it. Indigenous people were used as a ticket to get further west, and they parlayed and gave trinkets not out of respect and courtesy, but out of their desire for horses, guides, and other information. They are almost always spoken of with derision. In the Judeo/Christian manner, all of these resources were something to be taken, used, and thrown away by “civilized” White People.

But, a good book nonetheless and a bit heartbreaking to see where we’ve ended up 200+ years later.

If you made it this far, I ended up going with NV Trayee. Happy Monday!

I disagree, respectfully. I believe you can go a lot farther by showing genuine interest, concern, and respect for others lifestyles, cultures, belief systems, etc. But this was never the purpose of US Government, was it? It was all about “what can I get.” The same tale from every colonized country on earth, which creates untold resentment from the colonized and cultures in tatters or completely obliterated. Reading their journal entries, which are very factual and not given the hyperbole of “historical fiction,” good times and bad times were reported with fairly good objectivity. They (and their men, who suffered some horrendous whippings and a multitude of other hardships, some created by L&C, some created by the nature of their expedition) were quite ready to give up life and limb to get to their objective. Very focused, some might say admirable.

I think I should not have used the word “successful” and that we probably do agree more than my poorly worded sentence would suggest. What I meant is that, if L&C were the respectful and courteous sort, they would not have made very good colonizers! Now I’m very curious to seek out these journals to get a fuller understanding of L&C.

I don’t currently own any Narciso scents. I had the original For Her ages ago and gave it to my sister in law who loved it. So I think I’ll spend most of the week sampling my Jovoy discovery set which I received last week.

Today I just spritzed on Gardez Moi because I wanted something more floral, less warm (and a lot of the Jovoy scents seem to have more warm/spicy notes). It’s definitely floral, and quite sweet. I thought I smelled tuberose but it’s not listed as a note. I think ylang ylang + some white florals can come across as tuberose to my nose.

Wearing Un Air d’Apogée by Maison Violet. I have not a single NR, so no CP points for me this week. I don’t think I even have a sample lying around anywhere, although I’m going to have a look.
The funny thing is, I was just searching for a Narciso scent I might like after checking notes on Fragrantica. Iris, violet, musk. A powdery scent. For those of you who are familiar with NR fragrances, can you suggest one for me? Or any comments at all, really. TIA!

I am seeing a good number of references to Maison Violet. I have part of a sample set from a Sniffapalooza zoom. I bought a bottle of Sketch although most of the offerings are quite good!

I have no recommendations for NR as I don’t have any … although, I should now amend it to say I have a good number of samples (have to look for them but the chances of me finding them and wearing them are slim to none).

You smell so, so good. Delightful perfume and Maison Violet is one of my favorite old/new houses.

I do have two MV and a few more violet perfumes. Memory is really bad, so I’ll get back to you and watch these comments closely.😁

Thank you, AnniePerfumes! I haven’t seen MV mentioned here too much; nice to see some love for them. Not that I have any special connections, but I think they’re doing a good job with the re-introduction.

I honestly think the best one is the original Narciso in the white cube bottle. In the Narciso For Her line, my favorite is the L’absolu version. For powder, Jalapeno is right I think with Poudre.

    SOTD = Bleu de Chanel

Since I don’t have any NR, I will do a week of colorful bottles!

This one is very nice! Love!

In other news, I am one of the fire wardens for my floor. We are going to have a fire drill tomorrow, not publicized other than to fire wardens and we were encouraged to drum up interest (even though it’s mandatory). I copied 2 other people who are affiliated with the team on the note I sent to my section. One of them wrote back and thanked me for the heads up (not sure if he is sending his own note). The other one just sent a “Hello” (no name even though the email clearly came from me) with the message “I am no longer a fire warden”. First of all, rude. Second of all, I included the name of the Director of Safety and she couldn’t email him? I don’t know who this person is but if I recognize her, I may give her a piece of my mind.

    Sampling MDCI La Ravissante today.

A pretty, sweet and fruity floral to my nose but something in it is a bit cloying…I see ozonic notes listed and that could be it. Will see how it wears and if vanilla starts to shine more in the drydown.🤞🏻

Commando for part of today due to an appointment with the eye doctor. I took the bus there instead of driving, which was helpful on the return trip since I had those drops that dilate your pupils to a ridiculous degree during my exam. Rather nice to have someone else to do the driving after that.

What was not nice was waiting for said bus in the rain and wind. I was dressed for it, thankfully. Yay for wool socks and a jacket that stands up to nasty weather!

SOTD after getting home = Box of Eels EdT. Getting so very close to a sample thunk with this one!

My pupils are still kind of big. Otherwise OK. I did order new glasses today, which was fun.

But since I am nearsighted, and have been for many years now, I will probably have cataracts in my future. Phooey.

If you have to have a vision problem, cataract development is the problem to have! Easy fix, minimal to no side effects, and instant improvement in vision!

I remember getting those drops when we were kids. My sister and I took the bus there and back home. I also remember not really able to see anything afterwards so it was a challenge getting on the right bus.

Glad you have some fun new glasses coming!

    SOTD: Bengal Rouge

Courtesy of a sweet and super generous NSTer. I smell so good and sophisticated for someone who, like many here, sat on their rump.
I have a Barium test tomorrow. I’ve had it before, so I don’t think anything new should pop up. Just pretty gross to drink.
Looked like a milkshake of peptobismal last time. Pretty!

I don’t have any NR fragrances in my stash. I tried the “white” from a sample but it was not good on my skin for some reason.

After my shower tonight I was finally able to thunk a Crabtree & Evelyn almond body lotion and sprayed on 4160 Tuesdays Over the Chocolate Shop as my sote.

Me too! Years ago I worked in an amazing little retail store that had many C&E scents. I remember loving all things Nantucket Briar; they even had a foaming bath powder with a little scoop. I have a shower gel and lotion set and it’s still smelling great!

I’ve had my eye on Lost Alice for awhile. Can you put your finger on why it’s ‘back and forth’; is there something particularly offputting? The notes do sound great!

It’s not really offputting, but maybe a bit linear? If you’re in the U.S., I’d be happy to send you a bit to try it out. Just click on my screenname to find my email address.
