Thursday scent of the day 1/19

Posted by Robin on 19 January 2023 171 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy National Popcorn Day! Birthdays: Edgar Allan Poe, Paul Cézanne, Patricia Highsmith, Julian Barnes, Janis Joplin, Edwidge Danticat, Dolly Parton. What fragrance are you wearing?

For the 2001 film Mulholland Drive, which I have seen twice (but not recently), I am wearing Elizabeth Taylor White Diamonds (vintage, and showing its age, which works even better for the community project).

Reminder: 1/20 is David Lynch's birthday. Pick a favorite Lynch work or character and wear a scent to match, or pick a theme (split roles? doppelgangers? surrealism?) and work with that for your fragrance choice. If you don't know (or care about) his work, you could just wear something a little weird or off-kilter.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive. Bonus reading: Why Mulholland Drive is the greatest film since 2000 at BBC; Mulholland Drive at 20: David Lynch’s audacious puzzle remains a mystery at The Guardian, Is 'Mulholland Drive' Really The Greatest Film Of The 21st Century? (Or How I Learned To Love David Lynch) at Slash Film.

I read that very melancholic book not that long ago. It reminded me quite a bit of Françoise Sagan’s novels.

    It is raining here.
In an extended performance, David Lynch reported the weather every day from May 2020 – Dec 2022. Here’s 5/18/20. “By golly, we’ve got rain…”

So, this is basically a raspberry rose fragrance, which some reviews have described as linear, and long-lasting, not to say overpowering. I am still getting a whiff of it after five hours of wear, but my skin often eats certain fragrances. There are some interesting reviews of Ramon Monegal scents on Fragrantica.

I looked up David Lynch on IMDB and saw that he directed an advertisement for Calvin Klein Obsession, so I’m wearing the vintage today. At this point, it smells downright niche-y.

Twins and for the same reason, though I wouldn’t have known about it if someone else hadn’t mentioned his perfume commercials on Monday. Oh, but I’m not in vintage. I bought my small bottle at TJ Maxx about 6 years ago now so I have no idea when it was made.

Continuing with my House of Matriarch scents that were inspired by Twin Peaks ( https://www.matriarch.biz/products/twin-peaks-perfume-fragrance-collection-liquid-music-trio-25th ), today’s scent is The Red Room : “Deep and haunting – a powerful chord of western red cedar heartwood with melodic overtures of black currant over a baseline of leather, copaiba and incense.”

Darren Aronofsky named his first movie π. It’s not exactly Lynchian because nobody really is, but dang if it isn’t pretty close.

Givenchy π is another one of those scents I bought at its launch: I instantly knew it was for me. I still have that same bottle, twenty plus years later: I don’t think it’s changed, but I have, and I rarely wear it. But it really is terrific.

It’s snainging here-hideous combination of rain, snow, sleet and hail, and dark grey clouds so close to the ground. I’m in a generous amount of Dans Tes Bras, cause I thought I was working outside and alone for a good part of the day-turns out my talents are needed indoors, in close proximity to others lol. Dithered forever this morning about what perfume to wear and finally chose an old standby that never fails- ELdO Fils de Dieu.

In the way that everything in life evens out, we had a wonderful little drive without the “check engine” light, the sun was out, did a sunset walk on the beach, got some lovely photos, then-

Saw a man and an off leash lab coming my way, put T-Rex back on the leash to avoid worst case scenario. Then, the dog started stalking us and BAM! Came at us like a rocket! I was screaming to man to “Get your DAM* dog!” who of course paid absolutely no attention to its owner, went for T—Rex, knocked me over in the process (right at the tide line), I’m simultaneously trying to cover T-Rex ( I have insurance in case of a bite, she doesn’t!) and kick the other dog out of the way while I scrambled around on the sand like a turtle on its back, screaming at the guy the whole time, took him forever to finally collar his dam* dog, said “hey, sorry” and walked away. Ugh! I had sand in every crack and crevice you can think of, was soaking wet, and simultaneously mad as hell and worried my dog was injured. There was about a dozen watchers who enjoyed the show…🙄

I’m bringing pepper spray from now on. A shot for the dog and 2 shots for these reckless, irresponsible owners.

See, my day evened out just perfectly! 😅

She’s fine. I don’t think she and the other dog ever connected teeth to flesh because I was scrabbling around on the sand, kicking at the lab while hugging T-Rex to my chest so she didn’t go after the other dog, and end up getting all tied up with the leash and the other dog, which would have made things worse. She’s not a dog to start a fight but, by God, she will not back down once a dog has come at her. These dogs were bred to be tough, focused, and resilient to heard cattle across vast distances by biting at the cattle’s heels, hence the name “heeler.” I’m seriously sick of these owners, I can tell you that. 😒

This cat person (who thinks T-Rex is *adorable*) is so sorry you had to get through that. Alas that there are dog owners like a former neighbor of mine, who in many ways was wonderful, but they thought all their dogs were “off leash” trained. So, um, that meant the dogs would only go ripping around after rabbits, meter readers, and other dogs if doggies were in the mood, or the neighbor was not around to call them back. Sigh.

Dogs and owners like that are a nuisance and dangerous. Owners should be fined a large amount (several hundred dollars), especially if they are repeat offenders. Three tickets max, then the dogs get removed from the owner. Foster care or a shelter until a responsible owner can be found!

I never take her to a dog park. Tell your sisters to ask their vets about the LAST place they would take their dogs. Vets see so many injuries from dog parks, it could be whole new area of veterinary care: Urgent Veterinary Surgery Center. And for the cat lovers showing my doggo some love- Thank You! I believe she is part cat, especially the way she uses her paws and the way she can leap so elegant and bonelessly! 😻

Another 4-5 inches of snow last night. We have gotten clobbered this year.

I know I’m as sick of the rain as you must be of the snow, but we need it so BAD! Hopefully, all this precipitation will help drought stricken areas this year. ❄️ 🌧

I’m not remotely Lynch-y today in Patou 1000, the most recent version. On the other hand, a rich classic floral is good for nearly anywhere.

A very busy week! A boring, cold and rainy day.
Wearing Maison Violet Tanagra. It is a nice, office friendly, but very fleeting iris perfume. I reapplied twice today and thunked the sample already.

    Happy Thursday!

Iris perfumes don’t seem to last as well as other perfumes, at least on me. They’re kind of like the citruses of the floral world…hope your day warms up and you see a bit of the sun. ☀️

With very few exceptions, iris perfumes become a skin scent in less than an hour on me. That’s why I have to spray heavily on them to make them last a little longer.

I hope your visit went well, lillyjo. Glad you went for something perfumey!

I saw your comment back to my question re: your sister not using fragrance. My very good friend doesn’t use fragrance, at all. Even hand creams need to be unscented. She complains when people at work have “scenty” things on. Although in her defense, it’s an unscented working environment for her, but people break the rules. However, it still makes me chuckle sometimes because she’d be in absolute shock with my stash of all-things-scented!

I don’t know a thing about David Lynch, but I gather that he does avant-garde stuff, so I am in the avant-garde CdG Sticky Cake from a sample I got with a recent purchase from Lucky Scent. Sticky Cake is much less sweet than I expected from the name, and has a lovely iris note. Unfortunately it also has a strong almond note as well, and that makes it a “no” from me.

SotD vintage-ish Giorgio Red. Probably some CP points in there somewhere. It’s very challenging for me to wear it, but at some point I get a Youth Dew vibe and also it skirts past the (for me) dreaded Christmas Candle spice vibe and becomes quite enjoyable.
