Wednesday scent of the day 1/4

Posted by Robin on 4 January 2023 105 Comments

Hump Day and the 11th day of Christmas (pipers piping), plus World Braille Day. Birthdays: Sir Isaac Newton and Michael Stipe. Don't forget that Donatella is dropping by today! What fragrance are you wearing?

I am commando for a (potentially unpleasant, so apologies in advance if I disappear this afternoon) trip to the dentist. I will probably ignore the project and put on Diptyque Tam Dao as soon as I get back.

Reminder: on 1/6, wear a fragrance to match Viva Magenta, Pantone's color of the year for 2023. ("Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, and a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative. [It] is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying, and a boundaryless shade that is manifesting as a stand-out statement.")

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2023, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image shows two of the six limited edition Viva Magenta sneaker styles ($89 - $110) for 2023 by (B Corp) brand Cariuma.

Wearing Tom Ford Lost Cherry for the CP.

Beautiful sunny morning and in the mid 60’s today. Rain arriving in the afternoon, but no complaints. It feels like summer here! 🌞

Nothing magenta about Ted Lapidus CrĂ©ation, another one of those mid-eighties chypres I can never get enough of: this one starts with a deranged fruit cocktail (Fragrantica says galbanum, mango, blackcurrant, passionfruit, bergamot, peach, lemon, neroli, and mandarin orange, and I believe it) and segues into carnations and a lot of luxe oakmoss. Those people who think fragrances have a short shelf — I’d like to brandish this under their noses and say, “See? Almost forty years old and it’s fresh as the day it was made!” Even the top notes are intact. (It helps that it never sees the light of day.)

That description is positively mouth-watering, those older chypres are good. Glad it’s held up so well.

I completely agree with your thoughts on Creation. I absolutely adore this one đŸ„°! Got a bottle years ago for cheap and it’s held up beautifully! I especially love to wear it in early Spring in April when my world here wakes up to new life – it’s just perfect with its burst of galbanum and mĂ©lange of everything else!

I am finally CP-compliant today in Jo Malone Pomegranate Noir. Pomegranates are magenta-ish, right?

The rain has started but the big part of the storm isn’t here yet; due later today. We will likely get 5-7″ of rain by tomorrow. The juncos are already hiding on my front porch; I can hear them cheeping. Spying on them will entertain the cat for the day.

I do love those magenta runners. I was just thinking about looking into getting a pair, until I had a flashback to the pink Converse hightops I owned in high school. I desperately wanted them, then when I finally got them I learned why someone with size 10 feet should never own bright, narrow shoes.

Debating whether I’ll go commando today. Yesterday I wore some of the LADDM solid, since I know what that smells like and it won’t bother anyone. :)

Good luck with the oral surgeon, Robin!

    Good luck with dentist, Robin.
I was hunting around , filling time, and came upon this magenta-adjacent gown that blew me away. The information talks about artificial dyes, and I was thinking about that in relationship to perfume: something artificial smelling. Plus the boldness of magenta. And I’m going with Black Opium Neon, because it’s fairly loud, and in your face, and exhausting but also takes up space and is direct.
There was a book, awhile ago, called Mauve , that was about the dye and quite interesting that also comes to mind.

CP compliant on account of the label colors!

When I met up with cousins over the holidays, there was talk about other cousins, naturally. There’s one particular cousin that none of us like and the subject of him came up. One of the cousins happened to mention that when he took a 23 and me test, his report showed one close relative and of course it was the hated cousin. Anyway, I am curious to know if anyone here has done the 23 and me test and found heretofore unknown blood relatives? I am not at all asking about other aspects of the results other than ancestry. What got me curious was this cousin also found out he was surprisingly 4% something else other than what we know us to be.

I’ve always been interested in doing that but I already know I’m an all American mixed breed, so doubt I’d find out anything new. If my parents weren’t my real parents, oh well, they’re both dead, so no point in getting upset about it at this point. I’m not interested AT ALL in finding potential new family members. I don’t like the few I have left and doubt I’d like any new players. 😜

Ha! When my cousin mentioned what his 4% was, I was in total shock. I was just bummed that he confirmed that the no-good spoiled brat cousin was related to both of us and 23 other cousins (it used to be 31 from dad’s side but I decided not to count two uncles’ kids because of known family intrigues). Let’s just say I can write a book …

My spouse is really into genealogy and so has done a number of tests. I’m not sure if any of them were 23 and Me; I think they were maybe more specialist tests (I know one traces the mother’s side and the other the father’s). Anyway, he did them because he’d long hit a dead end on his dad’s side — he couldn’t find anything on his great-great grandfather’s parents or birth or anything beyond the fact that he’d been sold off to work in the mills in New England when he was 5.

Turns out from the genetic test that his great-great-great grandfather had a totally different last name — instead of being, say, Gordons from Scotland, which they’d always thought, he was instead a Jones from Wales. Oops. Digging further it turns out something like that his great-great-great grandmother was married to the “Gordon” guy, but he ran off and she lived with the “Jones” guy, but she kept using the “Gordon” last name.

It’s a good thing my spouse’s grandfather had died before this discovery. He had a lot wrapped up in the idea that he was of Scottish heritage. :)

We did not (so far) find unknown family members, but we did reconnect a bit with some distant relatives, and we confirmed some bits of family lore, and found lots of interesting and actionable medical info. Very glad we did 23andme.

I personally do not worry about the nefarious use of DNA — if anyone really wants your DNA it is not all that hard to get it anyway. But of course one day I might be sorry :-)

Robyn, I hope the dental visit was not as bad as feared. I went for a cleaning yesterday, and left with an appointment for yet another crown. Once again, I must thank my parents for the poor genetics, and for my childhood of under fluoridated water, which also took place prior to fluoride treatments.

Yesterday’s tea pot was gorgeous; I didn’t have time to post, but I wore Bandit, which, for me works as a match for this week’s CP. Today, I was in Aromatics Elixir, but then showered and de-scented myself to accompany Mr. Skal to the optician to get his first-ever pair of prescription glasses (I’ve been wearing glasses for 45 years; he’s a decade older than me, and this really is his first pair – no fair!).

Having posted in the purchasing poll about my bottle of 28 La Pausa, I think I will go put some on right now. We have steady, icky rain here; I hope that others are having a better day!

Unfluoridated water is still a thing where I live, even though I’m in a major metro area. My old dental hygienist used to go on and on at every cleaning about how she could tell I’d grown up somewhere with fluoridation, because my teeth were in much better shape than people who’d grown up here. One of those things I’d never thought about until someone pointed it out…

I’m afraid it was every bit as bad as I’d feared, but it was much shorter than I expected, so there’s that ;-)

Hope that your dental appointment went well today Robin, and that you aren’t hurting now!

It’s been a low energy day for me. The arm I had my COVID booster in hurts from shoulder to fingertips. So far, the only side effects I have had are the sore arm, fatigue, and lack of appetite. It’s the mildest reaction I have had but still not fun.

SOTD = back in Iris Torrefie.

go you for getting your booster. I had much less reaction to the latest one, too.

Thanks tiffanie. I still have a very achy and upset armpit, which has happened with all my COVID shots.

sotd = Lush Breath of God

solid perfume from a mini tin + a couple spritzes from a sample, both shared by generous NST friends in past swaps. :)

Robin, you smell like heaven in Tam Dao.

I don’t think I have tried Breath of God yet. I will look for it next time I go to Lush.

It’s still being sold in the USA – I saw it at my local Lush last week.

Hope the dentist visit was quick and painless, Robin, and does not require you to return.

I am coincidentally in right step with the CP with cherry serving as the magenta. Went with venerable POTL EdP this morning

SotD is Marissa Zappas’ Violette Hay. Santa dropped many samples into my Christmas stocking this year, and this was one. My note of obsession lately is violet, so I guess I’m CP adjacent today. Very pretty and I do like it, but not enough for a full bottle. Nothing to confess here!

Chiming in very late to say that I was twins with Robin in Tam Dao early on today, and then switched to Hindu Kush for the afternoon. Have to say that I LOVE skalolazka’s pairing of Bandit with this week’s color, and may well borrow it.

I wore just one small squirt of Amouage Myths since I had a doctor’s appointment before work today. The color of the bottle goes from purple at the bottom to magenta at the top, so that’s my connection! I really love certain shades of magenta, fuchsia, hot pink, dark pinky-purple, etc. I have a water bottle I bought just for the color; it’s like this one, but a slightly different shape: https://www.sears.com/oggi-808513-oggi-calypso-double-wall-sports-bottle/p-SPM14411145819
It makes me happy to look at!
