It’s a lovely mild day — 6C, no wind, cloudy-with-sun — and we’re out for a long walk, running errands on foot (including returning a book to the library, got a few more while we were there, because one of my resolutions, why do I bother, is to read more actual books in 2023), just enjoying the last day of the year.
I’m in an old favourite, Escada Casual Friday, an exceptionally good scent and what a crime that it was discontinued. I hope everyone here in this oasis has a happy New Year and I hope to see you all in 2023.

It is truly amazing, I am so glad to be able to see it. The Beatles are not, strictly speaking, my favorite band in the world (I do love the Beatles, but there are others I love more) but I cannot imagine watching this many hours of footage about any other band. So maybe they are really my most important band even if not my favorite.

We enjoyed Glass Onion, although the first hour seemed a little draggy at times. I think it would have been more fun on the big screen. (Knives Out was probably the last movie we saw in a theater…)
Watching Daniel Craig and Kate Hudson chew up the scenery was entertaining, and Miss Monae was stunning- my husband mentioned several times that “She is so pretty!” Not a great movie, but very watchable.

Happy New Year, everyone! I will probably be commando again yet today. My sense of smell is still, as someone said here yesterday, muted. I can pick up some things, like mint in my tea, but not many others.
I have to travel yet again today, but thankfully by car. (I don’t think my ears can take being in the air again.) Still waiting to hear anything about the 2 bags that the airline misplaced…I suspect I am just going to have to go to the airport in a few days and demand to go through the piles there.
But, we’re scheduled to go see an Earth, Wind & Fire tribute band tonight for an early way to ring in the new year (we’re going to the early show; I guess we’re truly middle aged now! Or want to be at home for midnight with the kids…), so that should be fun.
I’m excited to pick up all my scented goodies at my sister’s today! But…bummed that my 30ml bottle of Jardin sur le Nil may be lost with my luggage. Fingers crossed…

Debating if I should get the EDP first, or the parfum. I’ve heard that the parfum is lovely. I’ve also heard that the pre-2016 EDT is great, but of course it is impossible to find nowadays.

Rabbit rabbit rabbit plus one more rabbit for the year of the rabbit! Happy New Year everyone! It’s my son’s 21st birthday today and I was going to make a cake but there are no eggs in the supermarket at the moment, so that’s let me off the hook.
Had an odd dream about inventing perfumed hair clips. Not only do they hold your hair in place but they release scent during the day. They were a huge hit and looked wonderful. Now I am wondering how I made them. A scented strip inside a clip? A perfume absorbent material made into a hair clip? A dissolving perfume bubble? Anyway , they were great, especially the blue dragonfly ones!

Battery hen farming has just been banned by law so there is a bit of an adjustment going on. I buy free range eggs but now there’s not enough to go around. We might just buy hens as we have room in the garden and they can roam around. I can make a vegan cake today so it will work out.

I can’t find any when I Googled just now. I think I could make them from that porous basalt stone that is used for perfume beads. I could shape them into oval or oblong silvers with a metal backing. Kind of tempting to give it a try.

Happy New Year skalolazka! Did you end up staying in?
Yup. It was the right decision — after a gentle yoga session and a shower, I felt good and picked out an outfit to wear to the parties (down to the jewelry). By 5, I felt totally rundown again, so we sent apologies to both hosts.
We had a dinner of frozen pelmeni, since we hadn’t planned on a meal at home, and watched Off Track (a predictable but sweet and enjoyable Swedish movie) and two episodes of Three Pines, which we both like a lot — Alfred Molina is terrific and the acting across the board is first rate. Today I am feeling much better, so we went for a long walk and are looking forward to our dinner! I’m wearing Wrappings today, probably for the last time this season.
Only problem now is what to do with the panettone we were going to take to the parties. They are purchased, but nice ones. We both love panettone but it’s too many calories for us. I may drop them off tomorrow with the friends whose parties we missed — both have kids in the house and will probably enjoy them (especially some they are orange and chocolate panettone!).
Suffice it to say that after the year of broken bones and surgeries and illnesses I’ve had, I am absolutely thrilled to say farewell to 2022. Goodbye and good riddance!
I’ve had a slow morning but am going out now to buy a select few items because I decided to use the morel mushrooms I bought yesterday to make a creamy pasta dish for tonight. I’m also exploring a bottle shop that sells alternatives to alcoholic beverages, being a bit tempted to try for a dry January. It’s supposed to be so good for you.
Covid sure wears you out. If I have a good day and go out to do some things then I have to sleep a lot the next day. Last night I made the mistake of watching the Korean movie Memories of Murder before going to bed. Wow. It’s by Bong Joon-Ho of Paradise fame, only his second film, and pretty brilliant. Not your usual serial killer movie, and not really very grisly, but unusually chilling and atmospheric. Rain and rain and more rain…. it stays in your mind. And then I dreamed that I was killing cats and cutting them up to experiment on! Eeek! I was never so glad to wake up and make coffee.
Sorry to present you with that image. I’m recommending the movie but with some major caveats. My SOTD is Indult Isvarya. It’s not something I wear often as it’s frankly too syrupy, but in many ways I love it. Plum is a note that strongly draws me in. This reminds me that I watched Christopher Kimball making (or helping to make) an Austrian plum tart on Milk Street the other night. Wow did that look yummy. I think it might smell like Isvarya, although the tart has caraway and this doesn’t.

I purchased a number of alcohol-free spirit substitutes earlier this month. So far there’s nothing I absolutely love, but it’s been nice to enjoy a NA cocktail over the holidays. I am less and less able to tolerate even small amounts of hard liquor. Oh, and I’ve been buying Clausthaler NA beer — I like the dark/dry-hopped one very much.

A quiet, rainy day here. I’ve spent the day cleaning because I was raised to believe that you have to clean out the old year to get good luck in the new. However, as I’ve aged I’ve started to wonder if my mom just made that up to get us to clean the house in time for her New Year’s Eve parties.

I have a wistful question from a non-perfume cousin: where did Molton Brown Rosa Absolute go? It’s doubtless due to the usual demands of the marketplace, but I thought I would ask, especially if anyone would know of a UK discounter? Any suggestions welcome…
As far as I know, Rosa Absolute is no longer made or available. I was a huge fan of the shower gel and used several of those bottles (never tried the perfume, I’ve got so many gorgeous rose perfumes I did not think that one could compete). This year I bought the Rose Dunes shower gel (their limited edition holiday offering) hoping it will be something like Rosa Absolute but it is not even close.

Trish McEvoy Blackberry & Vanilla Musk all day long today. It fades kinda quickly but i just top it up and after a few rounds of that it creates a lovely, light aura of sweetness around me.
Celebrating a late Christmas with my family next weekend when my brother visits. We did stocking stuffers on the actual holiday, but now will get to do tree presents and have another nice dinner.
Am planning to make a Wacky Cake, which i haven’t made for maybe 30 years. I used to make them all the time as a teenager, and they are very tasty and so easy. Called Wacky Cake because they don’t use butter, eggs or dairy, which was important during the Depression. I think my mom and brother will enjoy the blast from the past.
I just have to figure out which of the gluten free flours I should use for this one. I typically bake with Pamela’s GF Pancake & Baking Mix, so will give that a shot probably. It’s was great for coffee cake last weekend, and I’ve made baked donuts, pumpkin and banana bread with it and been super happy.

Been busy this week like crazy. Our little peninsula of Wisconsin has seen visitors like it’s summer, so our market has seen a steady flow – all hands on deck. It helps that after the pre-Christmas storm and cold we’ve had warm weather the past couple of days. Fire pits at the local brewery going strong.
Got a compliment from a customer on my scent yesterday, which was Aroma M Geisha Noire. Today was Ta’if. I’m back to knitting…I decided my secret Santa gift for work will be a simple cowl.
That is so interesting, I did not know there were tons of tourists roaming around Wisconsin in December. We usually get crowds of tourists for the local gardens, but the cold really kept the numbers down this year.

I’m making a barbecue bean kinda thing baked in the oven, even though it’s pretty warm out. We have lots of fog, so I’m waiting until the afternoon to get some groceries.
I stayed in last night. It was a good night for quiet introspection for me, to set some plans for the new year. Many changes coming my way.
I’m in Carner Barcelona Rima XI, from a Scentbird decant. This sits so nicely between a light gourmand and warm, spicy vanilla. It’s mood is cooler weather, but it’s light enough to wear on warm winter days like today. And now that I’ve talked it up, I want a large sample of it. 😂

It’s only Jan 2 and I already feel like I need a holiday. A holiday from the holiday…but no, we have “ invite ourselves over, passive aggressive, sit on the couch, and expect to be entertained and fed” relatives coming for three days this week. Still, it’s good for me to have my numerous flaws highlighted so I can work on bettering myself ( love the LOL tagged on the end of every negative, thanks) though I Wish we could leave the key under the mat for them and take off. Ugh. Anyway, saved by Nebbe’s Wacky Cake yesterday! Perfect no egg chocolate cake for my son’s birthday, then Hitchcock movies with the curtains pulled during the afternoon ( mother turning in her grave at the waste of sunlight and fresh air, and outdoors). Reading two books at once, one on iPad then when battery dims off to paper copy. Wearing Datura Noir as a match to my dark thoughts concerning visitors.

As for me, I was AFK yesterday. Spent most of the day with friends for NYE. No, we were NOT in Times Square last night, thank heavens. So I rang in the New Year with good food and good company.
However, there was also some sad news yesterday. One of my cousins texted me that another cousin of ours had passed away shortly before Thanksgiving. It was not expected. In fact, that cousin had been one of the people at my Mom’s funeral. And he looked fine then. I am glad that I was able to see him then.

Today from the start and still going on now it is almost all and only about the honey. I wonder if my (treasured) bottle has changed somewhat from earlier days, when I got more of those luscious white florals on top.

Happy New Year everyone! I fell asleep on the couch last night and woke up to the sound of fireworks at midnight :). I then went to bed and slept in until 1pm (!!!) and am still lazing around. One of my perpetual “goals” is to exercise more, but I hate it, so I’m off to my usual start of spending my time off not doing much!
I’m going to try to use up more samples and decants, so I’m in La Route d’Emeraude Isabey. It’s okay. I’ll finish it up with no desire to purchase.
I hope 2023 is way better than 2022, and I’m grateful for the wonderful community here!

Tonight, post-shower it’s DSH Muresque.
