It's the Monday-est of Mondays, plus National Pasta Day and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. What fragrance are you wearing?
I meant to pair something with Lyra's Oxford by Philip Pullman, since ockeghem brought up the author yesterday, but somehow I've ended up in L'Artisan Parfumeur L'Eau du Caporal. It does not fit. If I think of a way to retrofit my fragrance to something in the His Dark Materials / Northern Lights universe by the end of the day, I'll come back and claim points.
Reminder: on 10/21, for Ursula LeGuin's birthday, choose a work of speculative fiction or a character from such a work, and wear the fragrance that you think fits. Your chosen work can be written, audio or visual. Bonus points if you choose a work of LeGuin's or one of the shortlisted works for the inaugural Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SL Daim Blond again. very close to finishing, hoping for a thunk soon, the first one in many years.
I find that one reminds me a cold, what do you get from it?
reminds me of the cold, sorry not up to typing yet this morning I guess
Hmm, I’ll have to think about that today. Normally I find leather scents warming, which makes sense when it’s cold outside.
In Hiram Green Arbole Arbole.
Rainy day and feeling very sleepy. Coffee and more coffee to the rescue, on this very busy day at work.
Happy Monday! ☕️☕️
You smell great! I am happy to finally get a sunny morning, hope your weather doesn’t get you down. We’re drifting into winter so more grey skies coming, but we can always hope!
Thank you, Cazaubon!
We are supposed to be back to sunny skies on Wednesday with temps in the upper 50’s and lower 60’s. Not bad! However, getting darker and darker in the afternoons is becoming very depressing! Let’s hope to stay cheerful!
Happy Monday!
On Saturday I let my daughter talk me into getting her a mocha iced coffee. She was up until last night! No more coffee for her ever! More for you🌞
Lol! Please, pass all that coffee! It is more than welcome here! ☕️☕️☕️
Maybe decaf next time she wheedles?
Sorry, but I found this rather amusing. I am caffeine sensitive, and had to learn that the hard way.
Sleepy twins! Good luck and much caffeine to us both.
Let’s hope the afternoon is better, Robin! Sharing some of Lillyjo’s coffee with you! ☕️☕️
Gloomy morning here, but I did have a few hours of welcome sun in the afternoon. Now the clouds are back, and they will bring the rain later on.
Same here. The sun came for a couple of hours in the afternoon. It is raining now!
You smell great! I have a bottle of Arbolé Arbolé on its way to me, after testing it this weekend from a sample. It’s the first time in a long time that I’ve tried something and decided I just had to get it! No SOTD today though; I spent the day in bed with a nasty stomach bug and didn’t want to associate any of my fragrances with feeling sick. Much better now though, so who knows what my SOTD will be tomorrow?
I am sorry you are not feeling well. I hope you are totally recovered tomorrow.
I fell in love with Arbole Arbole at first sniff. It is a very unique, unusual and beautiful scent. My travel spray is still half full and I also have a back up travel spray. Enjoy your new bottle! I think I will eventually get s full bottle.
Lol I found a room spray called Angel of Mine at the dollar store. It smells so good. It’s a powdery scent for, I guess, baby rooms but I got it for a general room spray. Super powdery and fresh. If I sell a linen type of item on Ebay..I spray just a bit of this above the item..I just sold a baby blanket and did this. Sprayed some conservatively above the item to make it just have a bit of that fresh scent lol. So, I smell like that, as yeah..I sprayed some on my hand..I sometimes do this with room sprays to test out? Lol. I am thinking some Chanel 1957..to have powder on top of powder haha
Thanks for the tip! I love baby fragrances 🙂
That sounds good, I like the idea of spraying above an item to mail. I sell a lot of vintage scarves and store a fabric softener sheet with them but that can be overpowering.
I love scarves! Are you also an Ebay seller?
No, just Poshmark, although I’m looking at Mercari, too.
The only work of speculative/fantasy fiction I’ve read in many a year is also His Dark Materials: I’ve read it three times through and listened to the (fully acted-out) audiobook twice, so clearly it made an impact on me. (And urged other people to buy it, and gave away my paperback set to someone when I got the E-book.) Dunno if I can do an entire week, but let’s try.
Today is Jacques Fath Pour l’Homme, which is complicated and masculine and SEK SEE: it smells like the perfumer was given the brief of making every single men’s scent of the previous thirty years all at the same time, but in the best possible way. I am putting it on Lord Asriel, and specifically Daniel Craig, the Lord Asriel of the misfired movie version, because come on.
I think I can do a week but some of these books I have not read in years…going to sit down with the Handmaid’s Tale tonight. I should have watched the series, I’d remember more.
Have you watched the HBO miniseries for His Dark Materials?
I read The Handmaid’s Tale when it was new, and then reread it a couple of years ago — it feels even more prescient than ever.
I watched a couple of episodes of the first season of His Dark Materials, and of course I wanted to love it, but I just don’t know if the novels *can* be visualized: there’s so much difficult-to-film interiority (and so much exposition!) that I gave up. I guess I’d rather have it remain what it is in my head.
Yeah, I agree. I did watch it all the way through (well, as far as one can go until the final season comes out), because my kid wanted to see it. And then she spent the whole time comparing and complaining a bit about how they changed the story around. (Oh well, good opportunity to discuss narrative arc and why filmmakers make the choices they make, I guess.)
I can’t believe anybody could do justice to the books, but I am enjoying the series anyway.
Maybe helped that the series came after the movie.
I’m not doing the cp this week, because I lack that kind of imagination. This week I think that I am going back to work on some of my discovery sets, many of which have untouched samples. First up is The New Paradise by Ramon Monegal. Very figgy, and therefore not my cup of tea, but it’s not a scrubber.
I need to do that too, I have at least two large untested sets!
Accento by Xerjoff
pineapple and hyacinth are going strong..
Devouring 7husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Westman Atelier makeup today.
Trying but failing to smell pineapple + hyacinth in my mind. Is it good?
Yes, I would say it is a unisex scent
That’s such a good book. Sounds like you’re enjoying it!
In FM- Dans tes Bras today. It is a go to for wearing to work for me.
Love DTB!
Hello.
Sotd is Ambre Sultan. The weather is just starting to be cool enough for it.
After putting it off for quite a while I am finally attacking the kitchen, rearranging and clearing my pantry, full wipe down of everything. Hope I can get this done in two days.
Good luck! I love doing stuff like that.
Im wearing jo malone blue agava and cacao. Its fine, it kind of smells like Versace baby rose jeans. I bought it because someone said it smells like cola scented things. To me it does not. Someday my prince will come!
A Lab on Fire Paris*LA?
Also worth reading the comments to this review, because there are a few cola suggestions.
https://nstperfume.com/2014/12/04/a-lab-on-fire-parisla-perfume-review/
I will! I own and love Paris*LA, but to me it still doesn’t smell the way I want it to! I think I’m after the fizzy opening as opposed to the rich sweetness that most of the cola perfumes go for.
Have you tried Outremer’s Cola? I think they’ve got it right and it’s a ton of fun and not too $$.
I suppose the fizzy opening is difficult to maintain after the initial spray.
Maybe Demeter makes something that would work?
I put on my sample of L’Artisan Safran Troublant last night and added more this morning. I am really enjoying the soft hug of sweetened rose and spice. I don’t read much fantasy or sci-fi, but I did love all of Madeleine L’Engle’s books so might find a match there for this week.
Off to power yoga! Happy Monday, all.
That is a nice one, too bad it’s been dc’d. Enjoy your yoga!
I think L’Artisan has dced (or made harder to get) all my faves, the older wonderful ones. I don’t get it.
That yoga class was challenging–I knew it would be tough when I found the warm-up hard! Now relaxing with coffee, smoothie and my favorite raisin-pecan toast.
I’m in Lea. Love this one. Very simple with 3 notes: musk, almond, vanilla.
It’s Monday, cloudy and currently 36 degrees out. Ugh. Plus my Apple CarPlay was being glitchy this morning and I had to listen to the RADIO!😱 The horror. Lol.
I did end up making a chicken pot pie last night, and it was stuffed full! It turned out pretty good, and my family liked it too. Zero leftovers.
Yum, glad to hear you made the pot pie!
I’ve loved pot pie since I was a kid! I followed a pretty easy recipe, but now I’m on a mission to find the *perfect* recipe. I get on kicks like this. What else is one to do during the long dark days of winter besides cook and bake?
Yay for chicken pot pie!
We are weather twins except that it’s raining here, lake effect rain. There’s been mention of snow but the forecast is nice for the weekend.
I walked down the hallway at work at one point today to see snow out the window! I quickly returned to my windowless office so I didn’t have to look!🫣
What did you do for the crust? Do you make your own?
Um…the pillsbury doughboy made my crust.😬
Smart move! Lol
Also, this has been around forever but I always get such a kick out of it!
https://youtu.be/DIrQ9ilL8aw
Omg, “Dan! Flaky!” They are too funny😂 I’d never seen that one before.
Love a good pot pie and generous on the filling!
Gosh, I can’t remember the last time I listened to the radio.
I try not to listen to the radio.🤣
Yum for both Lea and the chicken pot pie. I remember when Lea was all the rage on MakeupAlley.
Lea came in one of the first sample packs I got from Luckyscent years ago, after I fell down the rabbit hole. It was love at first sniff.
Ooh I love chick pot pie! There’s a local place here that makes a super good one.
We have a farm to table place in our neighborhood that has take and bake meals and they had a pot pie last fall that was so delicious. The menu rotates seasonally and I keep watching for it to come back!
Do you have a recipe?
https://www.pillsbury.com/recipes/classic-chicken-pot-pie/1401d418-ac0b-4b50-ad09-c6f1243fb992
Super easy! And delicious. I used half and half instead of milk so it was extra creamy.😋
Oooo, this sounds good!
It was! I would recommend it.👍
Cold weather is a great reason to make extra tasty eats! 😋🥶
I think so too!
39 degrees and rain here. There is talk of snow mixing in tonight or tomorrow. I am opposite of madtowngirl today. I love listening to my local radio stations. I had to take my car in this morning to get the radio replaced ( for free thank goodness)
Today is my Friday and I am wearing Alien Essence Absolue. It’s probably a good one for the cp. I don’t know what to match it with because I haven’t quite figured it out yet.
Ha, see my response to madtowngirl! Happy Friday, lillyjo.
Too soon for wintry mix! 🥶.
Old fashion, I guess, but I also love listening to my local radio stations every morning.
Sorry you’re getting icky weather, but you can send it straight over here and I’d be very happy to get it! 😄
I bet you smell great, enjoy your we.
I always listen to the news on the radio.
I heard about the nasty impending weather in the Midwest earlier this afternoon. Some places in Michigan have gotten over a FOOT of snow already?!?
Glad that today is your Friday!
Hooray for Friday!🎉 We had ❄️ at one point today, I had to look away. Weatherman just said up to 71 this weekend though!
I don’t have the brain bandwidth for the cp this week so I will be wearing whatever I want, which is pretty much what I do every day. Today it’s Nicolai Vanille Tonka, so yummy.
“Wearing whatever you want” twins! 😜
Triplets. My brain is also too mushed up this week.🤷🏼♂️
Quadruplets.
I hear you on the brain bandwidth! Do what works.
I stole brain bandwidth from someone here at NST but I don’t remember who.
Excellent. If only you’d stolen a little more you’d know who to thank 😉
93F (that F stands for things other than Fahrenheit in my mind! 😡) here yesterday and I wanted to die. I think cooler weather is on the way starting today but still smoky and gross. One of worst autumns I can remember, and it makes me so sad 😭
Planning on being wakey wakey all day today, so I’m mainlining some strong coffee. Wearing Gypsy by SmellBent but will probably switch it up later. I was a bit heavy handed with application so people in the neighboring states can probably smell me! Happy weekend to me! 😎
Wow, 93 for you and 39 for lillyjo, quite a spectrum! It is supposed to be in the 80’s tomorrow & Wednesday here in San Diego.
We’re having the most ridiculous Spring heatwave and it’s not letting up.
There was this huge solar flare recently,I’m guessing that’s the reason for the current heat globally!
Stay cool!
✌🏻
Egads! 93F is warm for summer here, let alone autumn. Crazy.
Oof, 93 is really hot for the middle of October.
I saw a coffee mug the other day that said ‘My blood type is coffee’ lol, made me laugh.
I think I’ve done this pairing here before for a sci-fi themed CP, but I’m wearing Bengale Rouge for spice in Dune. I love this week’s CP since I think I read more speculative fiction than anything else, across many genres and styles. I love to be introduced to a new reality in a book even if it isn’t necessarily a happy or pleasant one.
Yesterday Seattle broke a record for highest temperature this late in the year. We broke the record with our 80 degrees early in the day, but we’d surpassed that with hitting 85 in the late afternoon! I was out for a walk in the warmth and it was so jarring to walk on crunchy dead leaves while having such warm air around you. Today, we’ve finally turned a corner into fall with a high of 67. Rain is supposed to finally start up at the end of the week.
I had the same Seattle experience yesterday – speculative (dystopian) fiction indeed! Rain will come as such a relief and my Rhody will be very happy.
You smell great, I love Bengale Rouge.
I’m happily wafting Memoirs of a Trespasser this morning and expecting a more normal kind of autumn day — sunny but topping out at 70F. And since Mr. G has become as fond of Memoirs as I am, I decided that it was time to up our game and ordered a 50 ml bottle while the LuckyScent F&F promo was on (many thanks to whoever mentioned that over the weekend!), so the remains of my travel spray will join the traveling decant set. Have a great Monday, everyone!
Huzzah for getting a much loved FB at a discount!
I survived my weekend of driving to and from my seminar. Yay! Couldn’t go out to dinner during it because I realized that I’ve only had a couple of night driving lessons last year and wasn’t confident on that. SOTD is Marron Chic
Congrats!
Yay! Driving in the Boulder area is NOT for the faint of heart, iirc.
Yay!
So glad all went well!
Trying Kerosene Follow today from a generous NSTer.
Holy coffee, Batman! Quite realistic so far…bordering on maybe too realistic…will see how it develops.
It was too much coffee for me. I’m curious to smell the new one, Followed, which apparently has a bit of coffee and cocoa plus tons of burnt caramel.
After reading Robin’s thoughts on His Dark Materials, I’m in La Curie Ossuary today, for the Jordan College crypt in “The Golden Compass.”
After telling that Car Talk story yesterday, Mr. Ockeghem reminded me that my old brain got one crucial part of the story wrong — it was a Peugeot, not a Renault! And he says the seat warmers weren’t the biggest problem; mostly it was that the ignition didn’t work. 🙂
Back to Monday in post-apocalyptic smoke. I can’t believe we still have fires in October, but as stated above for Seattle, the rain is coming. Supposed to snow in the mountains just in time for my astronomy weekend out in the Cascades.
Haha!
I’m currently driving a Peugeot and it is my favorite-favorite car ever!
I imagine they’ve improved a lot since the early ’80s. 😀
My dad loved his old Peugeot! Fun memory.
I found your weekend Car Talk story very funny, even if the make of the car was a little off. 😉
Hoping that everyone on the West Coast gets a good soaking sometime very soon. ☔💧💧💧
Thank you!
Love your perfume pairing!
In Santal Majuscule – sandalwood, rose and cacao, perfect for fall.
Smelling Good.
🙂
I love that one – I may join you later.
Please do!
Hello NST! We lost power all day on Sat, and then I was glued to my computer catching up on work on Sunday. So missed the reading poll. I am looking forward to going back and reading thru.
I’m in the dregs of syrupy Knowing, gifted to me years ago by Pixel, who had been given it as a hand-me-down from her sister-in-law, or cousin, or somebody 🙂 I decanted the last drops into a 3 ml vial. The color is amazing.
In books, I’ve been reading a couple on the history of Oakland, my city. In recent fiction, I loved The Promise by Damon Galgut. In junky but delicious fiction, I enjoyed The Ink Black Heart–it is a doorstop of a book, but a fast read (Hilary Mantel she ain’t!). Listening to a history of Spain on audible. I’ve got Kanuka’s Winter Time lined up for my travels next week.
Did you find out why your power went out? Ours goes out two or three times a year and the problem is almost certain to be a fallen tree or big branch. Oh, and syrupy Know sounds fabulous!
I hate losing power, you have my sympathies!

Oh YUCK on your power outage!
Ellis Brooklyn Bee. Nice and fall-ish. It is an easy-going sort of scent, not my absolute favorite but I bought a purse spray so I have the right amount.
I’ve been expanding my collection lately by a half dozen bottles, and I do plan to purchase some more this winter for presents for myself. I am definitely leaning more towards more classic scents/houses though. Probably Hermes and Chanel.
Which ones were you thinking about?
Some of the Hermessences, and maybe one of the Exclusives but I am not sure. I have most of both brands that I want, so I think I am just being greedy.
There’s a fancy Hermes counter at the downtown Nordstrom that has travel sets you can buy, and I plan on splashing out on those. I don’t have Cuir D’Ange, Mhyrr Eglantine, and might get another 15 ml of Osmanthe Yunnan and something else.
There’s an Hermes oil that smells amazing (Hermessence Cardamusc) which is like $400. I have a couple hundred in gift cards I could use towards it which would make it doable, but I already have so many options in my perfume wardrobe I don’t know if I can justify spending that much on a scent i might or might not use 15% of over the next 5 years. I don’t know. It just feels like too much. But then again one only lives once!
Cardamusc…Splitmeet this weekend, just saying…. 🙂
Currently in Lyric today after yesterday’s Memoir. Trying to figure out what to get my nephews for their birthdays. Well, I picked out Xbox gift cards but trying to figure out how much to put on them.
What a nice (and good smelling) aunt you are!
Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile edp.
The color of this juice is my favorite part about it.Non-offensive easy perfume for what was a @?$&# Monday.
XO’s
Isn’t every Monday a @?$&# Monday? You smell great every day of the week!✌🏼
Haha!
This one was especially imported from hell.
#NursingLife.🤣🌹
Hope you have a great Tuesday!
Good morning! I had a busy few days and have lots of NST to catch up on. We went to Hawke’s Bay for my beloved’s niece’s engagement party, lovely evening, but unexpectedly cold for that part of the country.
It was my birthday on Friday (not one of the significant numbers, but getting close) and I took the day off work. I haven’t got any perfume-related gifts to report, not even from myself, as I’m now saving for a trip in April 🙂
And I forgot to mention my perfume for the day – Neela Vermeire Ashoka.
And excellent choice of perfume. I love Ashoka. Always surprised that I don’t see it mentioned much.
Happy birthday. Hope you had plenty of cake.
Happy birthday, Gaynor!!
Happy Birthday, Gaynor! 🎂
Happy Birthday, Gaynor!
Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday!
Happy Scented Birthday Gaynor!
Happy belated birthday!
Happy belated Birthday!🎉
Happy fellow-October birthday – and many more!
Very late to the party – Happy Birthday, Gaynor!
Happy birthday! Having a trip to look forward to is as good as another bottle of perfume 🙂
Happy birthday! Maybe belated perfume gifts on the trip?
When I looked out the window this morning the air was yellow with wildfire smoke. I wish it would rain.
I got lots of good suggestions from yesterday’s reading posts, thank you all. Today I am wearing Angel’s Share and doing painting #3 in my learn to paint project. I need a better quality white, the hobby-grade one I have is not opaque enough.
You smell great, AS has really grown on me.
Smoothie is apple, frozen strawberries and blueberries and yogurt.
I picked Mauboussin Histoire d’eau and this evening it’s Phaedon Pure Azur, salty floral fig, it’s late in the season for this summer scent but I had forgotten about it.
Salty floral fig sounds amazing.
I found it really enjoyable and in spite of the notes it’s not at all like Womanity, a Good thing I think.
That smoothie sounds good – I had a good avocado, banana, and orange juice with a splash of lime juice last week. I find I quite like banana and avocado together.
Your smoothie sounds great too.
Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle, thanks to a generous NSTer. Starting tomorrow, I’m planning on testing my Alkemia samples leading up to Halloween, as I think the brand has a witchy vibe.
Today turned out to be
gorgeous after a particularly dreary morning, and I enjoyed a walk around the neighborhood which is predominantly quintessential NYC brownstones. People have taken great care to decorate their stoops and windowboxes, and beneath the arching branches of colorful leaves they just glow! I feel so very lucky to live here. I hope you all have had some joy today!
Oh you smell amazing! I got a decant of DVN from a kind NSTer many years ago and drained it quickly. Perhaps I should seek out a bit more.
Thank you, and so do you!
I feel that way walking around Montréal. So nice to be in a beautiful place!
It really is, and I’m so glad you found a place back in Montréal!
Me too, can’t wait to be back there!
In Kulfi again, as usual, but wanted to say that I finally got the correct parts of my LUSH order, includiiiiiing Sticky Dates!!!! DEFINITELY the stand-out of the order. Mango is ok. I don’t need any more of it, but I will certainly not mind using up what I have bought. But unless I get sick of it in a couple months, Sticky Dates will become a permanent part of my life, as Rose Jam has. It’s so great–notes of brown sugar and caramel and rich buttery bread pudding. It tastes positively edible.
Also, I went to the Guo Pei special exhibit at the SF Legion of Honor museum over the weekend, and I think a lot of you would enjoy it, even if you aren’t really into fashion/haute couture! Her pieces are absolutely gorgeous and thought-provoking. I also really liked how some of her pieces are interspersed throughout the LoH permanent collection. The dialogue between the permanent pieces and the Guo Pei dresses really brought out new and interesting connections and questions.
Hooray for finally getting your Lush order. Sticky Dates – yum!
Yes! I can’t believe it took me so long to try Sticky Dates! 🙂
I love Sticky Dates too, but I’m afraid to buy the big bottle as most of the time I’ve done that in the past I’ve gotten sick of the scent. I still love Rose Jam and Daddy-O though.
Oh yes, I definitely understand. I’m just hoping that having a few different scents of body wash in my bathroom will help me avoid getting sick of one 🙂 I’ve never tried Daddy-O, and I won’t, because I’m neither blonde nor grey, but the notes do sound lovely!
Ok, sounds like maybe I don’t need to get Mango.
I love Sticky Dates even though I almost never use it on its own.
I’d say Mango grows on me less every time I use it, which is pretty much every morning now because I’m trying to get rid of it. Every time I use it, all I can think is Kool-Aid. And I hated Kool-Aid as a kid, because it was so watery and I wanted real juice.
I did not love it either. I am so happy with Mimosa and Sticky Dates, I’ll stop while I’m ahead.
I LOVE the picture!
SOTD = Jo Malone Lupin & Patchouli
Very nice. I have no clue what lupin smells like in the wild. This one is fresh herby clean patchouli. The bottle is super gorgeous. I have 2 others from the Wildflowers and Weed Collection (Cade & Cedarwood and Hemlock & Bergamot).
https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj1BZoWuLRM/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=
I’ll be splitting a bunch of perfumes although I still need to fulfill 2 sets of freebies. I haven’t worked out the prices yet but will be offering 5 mL splits. I have decided to start with a clean slate and only accept dibs from the time I post my offering this Saturday.
Most likely: (discounts are pre-tax)
– Guerlain Shalimar Tonka – up to 20mL (this will be full price since that is what I got it for)
– Zoologist Sacred Scarab up to 30mL (I have to look at my receipt)
– Roja Parfums Enslaved – up to 25mL at approximately 40% off
– Goldfield & Banks Purple Suede – up to 50mL at approximately 20% off
– Serge Lutens La Couche du Diable up to 25mL at a 30% discount
I have an INSANE number of Guerlain and Hermes manufacturer’s samples so that will be the add on!
My lupins didn’t smell of anything.
I have a ton of Guerlain samples too, Sonja always loads me up!
How did I miss Sacred Scarab, too?! That one sounds great!
On point for National Pasta Day with tortellini and homemade Burst Cherry Tomato sauce for dinner. Mostly productive day for me, but I experienced first hand new hours for the CVS pharmacy I go to. They now are closed for a lunch break during the afternoon. Guess when I decided to pick up my Rx? 😆 Try again later, Jalapeno.
SOTD = SSS Incense Pure, because I wanted to.
… because I wanted to is ALWAYS the best reason. You smell great!
My Rite Aid is closed everyday between 1:30 and 2:00pm, no exceptions.
Walgreens also closed from 1:30pm to 2pm everyday. CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens here changed to that schedule during the worst of the pandemic.
Wow, it’s like living in small German towns, ca. 1995, when all the businesses closed for two hours in the middle of the day to go home for lunch.
