Happy Friday! Our community project for today is 'You Say It's Your Birthday'...pick a song related to a musical birthday today (John Lomax, Ray Charles, John Coltrane, Julio Iglesias, Bruce Springsteen, Ani DiFranco, or find another!) and wear a fragrance to match.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in Jean Couturier Coriandre, released the same year as the Bruce Springsteen song Rosalita (Come Out Tonight), from the album The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle.
Reminder: on 9/30, we're doing It's difficult, part 2...wear a fragrance that you (or someone around you?) finds difficult, for whatever reason. Suggested by Pixel, Kanuka and JB.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image is from the cover of Springsteen's first album, also 1973, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.
twenty seven sprays of Vanille Violette…welcome Autumn
Wow, I can almost smell you from here 🙂
Wow, I think I can smell you from here.😉😂
R.E.S.P.E.C.T.!
Woohoo! You smell great!
RIP Hilary Mantel. She was only 70, died of a stroke.
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/09/23/books/hilary-mantel-dead.html
Oh I just saw this as well.
RIP!🌹
Oh no! Brilliant. Hard to imagine anything could extinguish her light.
OH NO!!
I’m very sad right now.
Oh my, so sorry to see this!
I was so sad to see that this morning.
Oh geez.
I read that, I’m sad! I should wear JM’s Tudor Rose and Amber this weekend in her honor.
Well, *here’s* a deep dive. September 23rd is the birthday of Natalie Horler, a singer who created the Europop group Cascada, which had a bunch of hits in the mid-aughts, including my favourite, “Evacuate the Dancefloor”.
So for Natalie’s birthday I am wearing ELdO Vraie Blonde, which like the song is *extremely* effervescent: it smells like a box of chocolate bonbons filled with aldehydes (and a few peach crêmes) and not much else, because it is entirely single-minded and frankly a bit exhausting after a while, but you can’t say it’s not fun.
Oh fabulous!
Cascada is the soundtrack of my 2000’s BIG clubbing days, along with Armin van Buuren.I still do regular “club-Sundays” at home playing their stuff, haha!🥳🌹🤗
Love the idea of at-home Club Sundays. 💿 🕺
It keeps me sane.Haha!
Excellent work!
I love Vraie Blonde! I wrote a post about it here: https://scentsandsensibilities.co/2019/03/24/scent-sample-sunday-vraie-blonde/. You smell great!
Happy Friday!
Only 9 sprays of Fragonard Etoile,I can mostly keep up with CM8 regarding spraycounts each time, but this one seems good at 9…haha!
Etoile has a raspy ginger note that I’m quite enjoying,it’s a lovely perfume for a sunny spring day.
XO’s!🌹
You guys would be ashamed of me…I am often wearing a dab of something on the back of my hand, that’s it!
Never ashamed of a fellow perfumista,it’s the sentiment that counts!🌹🤗
I’m in the low spray/dab count club as well, Robin.
Hello Autumn! 🍁🍎🍂🎃
Wearing Jo Malone Pomegrante Noir.
Happy Friday!
Happy Friday pl67! Shocking how much it feels like autumn here…
Thank you, Robin! We had a brutal change here in a matter of hours. 53 degrees right now and very windy. Feels like winter, not fall!
It is only 57 here, not much better! But not so windy maybe. Still, I’m in long pants and long sleeves. Not ready for that….
I had to get a pair of sweats out this morning instead of my leggings.
A long sleeve shirt, a sweater and a light jacket for me this morning! 🤷♀️
We were wardrobe twins today!
Yay! Twins! It feels like winter here right now! 🥶
It was weird hearing that today’s weather was typical for late October or early November.
I’m wearing Basic Black from a new bottle. Very good for fall and winter, but today it is supposed to be in the upper 90s and with the heat index it will feel over that. So no CP points for me, but I think this will be a favorite colder weather fragrance.
Upper 90s! I am jealous.
I don’t know…. I immediately thought of “Paint it Black” by The Rolling Stones when you listed your SOTD.
I jumped to AC/DC’s “Back In Black” with your SOTD. Probably not the match you were looking for!
I’m taking at least partial points in Armani Privé Cuir Amethyste. The “birthday” tie-in is twofold (although neither is musical): first, one receives gifts on one’s birthday, and Cuir Amethyste was a gift out of the blue from a very kind NSTer who found she could no longer wear it but knew that I’m fond of leather scents; and second, amethyst is my own birthstone. Ta da. 😁🎂
Lol, it works.😁
Ta da! indeed. Love it.
I went with Boucheron, tying into John Coltrane -Blue Train – “I’m Old Fashioned”. Both are lush and beautiful. Best I could do!
If not a home run on the cp, it got me to wear Boucheron again, and listening to Blue Train this morning, making it a win-win for me, at least.
Oh nice!! Glad to see someone did Coltrane. I tried to think of a match for My Favorite Things but failed.
Made a larger than normal Ulta order. Some of it was stocking stuffers and the rest is what I am starting to run low on. But none of it was perfume. Wearing Dia for her and hoping my Amazon package today. It was supposed to arrive yesterday but somehow it was delayed. Outside of really bad weather, it should have arrived on time.
Dia is nice, and a patient perfume I would say, if that helps…
I’m in Guerlain Tonka Imperiale, which may be the only Guerlain Tonka I’ll get to experience since I woke to find an email from Guerlain saying my order of the new Shalimar had been cancelled due to item not being in stock. Anyone else? I just have to laugh because commenters over on fragrantica predicted this, one person calling it their dog and pony show. Lol.
I’m not going to let it ruin my fantastic Friday! I had a haircut this morning and my hairdresser put some waves in it, something I can’t seem to figure out how to do well, so my hair is at the top of it’s game. Tonight we have tickets to see….The Cult! Omg, I’m totally psyched. I’ve been listening to them since college, and they are here tonight! In my little midwestern city! We are meeting some friends who also have tickets for dinner prior, so it should be a great night.
I got nothin for the cp, but I do have a song of the day 🤘
https://youtu.be/k6PgftKbQnQ
Sorry about the letdown madtowngirl – boo for a system that could not keep up with the orders. Glad you have fun night out planned. I was hanging around Guerlain’s US website some yesterday and this morning, refreshing it but also doing other things. Of course it just says “out of stock.” I also sent my email in, but that never works. Suddenly I had an unpleasant memory of my youth, trying to (push button) telephone-into and win prizes from local radio stations! I hope some of the NST tonka lovers will nab a bottle without any drama!
Oh my gosh I remember those radio contests and the frantic dialing!
It was overly exciting in retrospect! 🙂
Hah! I’m old enough to remember telling my mom we needed to pay the extra dollar or so a month to upgrade our rotary phone to push button…solely so I could dial faster to try and win those radio contests.
A friend and I actually won tickets some years later to see The Who.
That’s awesome!
*That’s* the kind of prize I was remembering. But I think there were earlier contests involving rotary dials and a week’s-worth of cookies or a pony!
The Cult! And looking purty! Have too much fun.
Same thing happened to me. I spent yesterday afternoon quite happy that I had snagged a bottle, only to get an email last night telling me, nope actually you did not snag a bottle! Oh well.
Have so much fun at the show tonight!
Oh dear. That happened to me with an order from Lucky Scent, so I’m not comfortable with my order until I see it ship. So far I haven’t seen an email other than confirmation. We will see. It’ll be money saved if it’s cancelled.
I was lucky enough to see The Cult back in the day! Enjoy!
My brother just saw them here last month. Have a great time!
Wearing Safran Troublant which I paired with Bruce Hornsby’s Spider Fingers. Have loved his music for decades.
https://youtu.be/Svw_ExDoajs
Happy FriYAY!
Nice and autumnal – an might work for next week too
Nice! I love that another generation of listeners is getting introduced to to Bruce Hornsby via Bon Iver. Their styles work together so well.
👍🎶
OMG. OMG. I am so so so close. . . . Wearing Boy, for the second day in a row (almost empty is my bottle 🙁 ). Anyway, in honor of a matchless musician, I am wearing Boy, for Johnny Cash!
But. Wait! You say. Cash was born on another day.
Ah but don’t worry, cuz the confusion I can fix.
Cash WAS born on February 26.
Huh? You exclaim, and scratch your head.
Don’t even think today’s the day he became dead?
You’re right of course. Time to back a slightly different horse.
Here’s how we make it true.
Johnny Cash’s hit, A BOY named Sue.
But it was Shel Silverstein who wrote that jive.
And he was born on September 25.
Brilliant!
Plus I love Johnny Cash AND Boy.
Yes! You are true genius. I think not all people know that fun fact about Shel Silverstein. I had a crush on him as a little girl, probably still do. I was recently at the post office and saw the Giving Tree stamp and was heartbroken that of course it is sold out.
I think his poems have been turned into lyrics by other musicians–but now that I’ve said so, no idea who.
Fabulous.
That was amazing. Wow! 👏👏👏
Good job, OF very fun path!
Amazing. And I had no idea Shel Silverstein wrote A Boy Named Sue, thank you for that music history fact.
Wow!!! Just wow!!!
I had no idea! That’s an excellent piece of trivia.
Shel Silverstein’s “Crowded Tub” is the only poem I can recite from memory 🙂
That’s hilarious. I cannot recite it faultlessly anymore, but his “Sick” used to one I knew very well!
My 8 year old self definitely found it hilarious to refer to a “behind” in a poem. 😂🤣
I also did not know that She Silverstein wrote “A Boy Named Sue”. Excellent sleuthing!
Nicely played 🙂
Super cool!
My husband just told me, “You’re %$(*&%# nuts!” 😉 🙂 🙂
No CP points for me – I’ll just enjoy reading everyone else’s connections! I’m enjoying start of Fall with Luctor et Emergo edt. It is so lovely and while it’s not a scent I think of as “me” it intrigues all through a wearing.
Oh, you do smell great! (I don’t know if it’s “me” either but I love wearing it.)
About a year ago a friend sent me a bottle of Arquiste Boutonniere, as a just-because present. The first few minutes are overwhelming, as I am not a bwf fan, but the rest of the time it is stunninly beautiful with a green tinge.
I still haven’t tried any of the Arquistes, I should get on that.
I was thinking about the working class protagonists of Bruce Springsteen’s songs and I was also thinking about the fragrance industry’s history of making drugstore dupes of more expensive scents, so I wore one of the best of those, vintage L’ Aimant. It’s a pity this and Emeraude haven’t been kept up in quality because the originals are beautiful and actually compete with the lushness of their parent scents No 5 and Shalimar.
Great idea Desirae! I had a hard time thinking of fragrances to match Bruce songs.
Not participating in the CP today. SOTD is Coco Noir. Love this scent in the cooler months.
It is “the cooler months” here for sure! Hope it was a good Friday Kris.
I’m having a busy morning after a low-sleep night and don’t have a SOTD yet. Also I don’t know anything really about any of those birthday people’s music.
I do have a little notification though, a t-shirt possibly of interest at Talbot’s right now. I saw it in the store yesterday and bought it immediately! Kind of expensive for what it is but this weekend is a 25% off sale. “puff sleeve crewneck tee” with the word “Parfumerie” and a design fo perfume bottles in silver. It looks quite cute in real life. Hope this link works. (No affiliation.)
https://www.talbots.com/puff-sleeve-crewneck-tee/P223013517.html?cgid=new-tees-and-knits&dwvar_P223013517_color=WHITE&dwvar_P223013517_sizeType=MS#a0120dc28792d947794f459796=&start=1&sz=36
Duly noted – thanks! 😀
Oh that shirt IS cute!
I’ve been thinking about this tee shirt all day!
🙂
So many summers spent at Asbury Park with grandparents and parents when we were small. And eating ice cream with sandy feet driving home through Deal, NJ looking at all the mansions.
Tunnel of Love gets me every time. can listen to it on repeat forever.
Yesterday was a total wipeout from flu and covid shots.
I slept 14 hours last night but am much better today.
Post shower will be Benjoin 19.
Nice to reminisce. On a different note (punny), happy for you that you are feeling better.
Glad to hear that you and your arms are feeling better today!
Tunnel of Love is my fave Bruce album (and I have them all)…..
Glad you are feeling better today!
Wearing Dame’s Cassis Rose & Sandalwood apropos of nothing just because I like it, but tonight I’ll be deepening its rose, vanilla, and amber notes with Ghost Deep Night in a salute to Ray Charles and both his Nighttime is the Right Time and The Midnight Hour 🎶. Even the beautiful deep purple crescent moon bottle complements the music. Happy Birthday, Ray!🥳
I’m looking forward to some good ghosts today: A HS teacher in NJ began researching his beloved grandfather’s WWII years when he inherited the war memorabilia upon his grandpa’s passing. He decided to try and find relatives of the other men in the company, who had served together for more than 3 years in England loading bombs on the fighter planes. My dad was one of those men, and I was the first relative he found nearly 5 years ago! Since then we’ve become long-distance friends, corresponded and chatted on the phone, even having our story told in a Veterans’ Day edition of my local newspaper a few years ago. Well, today we’re finally going to meet! He’s in town for a conference and will be coming over later with his fiancée for more sharing and then we’re all going out to dinner. I’m sure his grandpa and my dad will be smiling down upon us and maybe even reminiscing about their time together – from some of the photos I have it looks like they were able to find some happy moments together 🍺 despite the seriousness of their mission.
Wishing everyone a good weekend ahead filled with happy moments!
Unbelievable! Very touching. I hope you learn a lot about your father and enjoy meeting this gentleman.
My own father fought in the Korean War. May I ask how he found you? I’ve been trying to do the same for the families my father of his friends.
Have a wonderful time!
My dad’s name was written on the back of one of his grandpa’s war photos. He searched and found my dad’s obituary, which listed my mom’s name and mine (I was only 14 at the time), then my mom’s obit which would’ve listed my married surname. He found my name listed as a member of my local historical society’s board of trustees, and sent an email to the president of the society identifying himself, his purpose, and his grandpa and my dad by name and the name of their company; the president then forwarded it to me. There was sufficient information in his email for me to check out thoroughly and satisfied that he was legit, I then contacted him. That’s all it took! 😅
Wow, he really did his research, and it paid off! Have fun!
That’s impressive! My father has tons of slides and pictures, but only 1st names or nicknames. There was a fire in ’73 that destroyed a lot of records. I’ve been trying to piece together where my father was, his timeline and his friends. Then, the families and Korean War Memorial will get copies.
If you or he can offer help, please let me know. I hope you had so much fun.
I will ask my friend if he has any suggestions for you. In the meantime, do you know the name of the company he was in? I was surprised to find out that much info on my dad’s company was available on the website of the bombardment group they were attached to; I had no idea that existed until my friend sent me the link. Good luck!
Wow, what a great story! Thanks for sharing it with us, and have a great dinner!
Thank you! He should be arriving in about an hour.
How cool! Enjoy the company of the good ghosts and the living tonight.
What a wonderful story! Enjoy the evening!
Love this. Completely.
Another changing up the cp. My cousin’s baby was born in 2020, where Clint Black put out an album. Today, Cody Jinx put out a cover of Clint’s song, “Nothing’s News”. Featuring Clint Black and Ward Davis.
I’ll be wearing patchouli e.o.
The song is beautiful, you can hear it on youtube.
Another creative twist, thanks AnniePerfumes!
Thanks!
I love Clint Black. I discovered “new country ” in the early nineties. He was/is a favorite.
You will love this lillyjo.
Fragile sung by birthday boy Julio, I’ve always loved this cover https://youtu.be/PZ8g9rZOX_I
I have to pair it with Jardin après la mousson as it the only perfume I have here in Provence.
How much longer are you there, Aurora?
I’m flying back 10/04, originally I was going to stay even longer.
That’s a good long visit, but sorry you can’t stay as long as you planned!
No SOTD for me yet. I’ve chosen Springsteen’s Thunder Road, which, today at least, feels like a good song for the melancholy of early fall. Like apsara, I am struggling on the day after my bivalent booster — it hasn’t made me feel nearly as awful as the earlier COVID vaxxes did, but I did not sleep at all well last night. (Glad to hear from apsara that the side effects seem to last only a day.) Am trying to gear up to go to the supermarket, since Mr. Skal is a little too sniffly to go.
I’ll probably return to Roísín Dubh, since I enjoyed it so much yesterday. Not sure there’s a connection to Thunder Road — or not one that I can spin right now.
One of my favorite songs!
Hope you sleep much better tonight.
Sticking with Ani DiFranco and “Not a Pretty Girl.” Wearing Feu d’Issey in her honour. (There’s plenty of fire, figuratively, in the song!) I can’t be with CM8 on the many sprays — I only have an old decant of this one and I wear it VERY sparingly, but one spray is enough to get me through the day.
You smell great! And hard-to-find, LOL…
Ooh, you smell wonderful! And rare!
Long time, no post…I have had two craptactular work weeks in a row and it’s been stressful…some days I did not even wear perfume which is rare for me. Wearing Laura Mercier Ambre Vanille today from a generous NSTer via the Swapmeet. I am getting orchid vanilla, almond and coconut so far.
In happy news, my sister-in-law successfully completed her first inpatient round of chemo to shrink some tumors and is scheduled for two more rounds: one in early Oct and another in early Nov and then will have a scan. She is feeling pretty good and attending a support group. ♥️
Yay for the happy health news! Sorry about crappy work stuff tho.
I’m sorry about the bad work weeks, but that IS good news about your sister.
Aw, sorry to hear that the past couple of work weeks have been so horrid for you. Hopefully that is over and done with now.
YAY for your sister’s good news!
So glad to hear about your sister!
Great news about your sister!
Good news about your sister! And you smell great.
Good news for your SiL. I hope she continues to feel ok.
Hopefully next week is less stressful for you.
Wishing you continuing good news and a better weekend than last.
Still a week behind with the CP, I’m wearing ELDO’s Ghost in the Shell today. Ghost is a good descriptor for this one because (at least on me) I get about 10 minutes, and then it all but disappears and I have this faint whiff left. I really like those sweetish, milky 10 minutes while I have them.
Tea today is Clipper Ship’s Golden Monkey.
That’s a funny match with the name, isn’t it? I don’t think I ever smelled that one.
Good morning from the deep south of New Zealand. I’ve had a busy few days and have a lot of NST to catch up on.
I’m visiting Invercargill with my mother, so that she visit an elderly cousin. We were supposed to be here in March, but Omicron stopped that. It’s a short trip, so I didn’t get the chance to see Kanuka, but next time, I hope.
I packed only a few travel sprays, so today’s drive will likely be sceted by Harem Soiree from Arte Profumi.
Good morning Gaynor! Hope your mom is enjoying her visit, that’s kind of you to take her.
In Lampblack which should match a Springsteen song…
Yes it should, plus you smell fantastic.
Love Rosalita and all those earlier Springsteen. Sweaty summers, beers on a fire escape, beaches.
Was wearing Galop earlier, but we came back to our hotel room to shower, and I will wear PdN Kiss Me Intense to dinner. CP song to pair is Passionate Kisses, written by Lucinda Williams. But I know it from Mary Chapin Carpenter. I remember crying to this song after a horrid break up. (We got back together and are married now…). Fond memories of MCC. We wandered in to Slim’s in SF one night to hear her (Slim’s was such a great venue…saw so many great acts in that small space.) Anyway, power went out in the neighborhood not too long after she took the stage. They lit candles, she climbed up to stand on the bar and did an acoustic show. Now that I think of it her song “Shut Up and Kiss Me” would work too.
Oh I love your song!
Great post! I love MCC too.
Artist twins with Robin, and probably quite a few other people. I chose Bruce Springsteen today, but my song is “The Rising”. It was the first thing of his that deeply resonated with me.
SOTD = SSS Incense Pure, to go with “The Rising”. There’s a synergy to the match. Kind of hard to put into words.
I feel the same about my match. I couldn’t figure out how to explain it. I feel like the song and perfume just move in the same way.
I think it’s even better when it just feels right and you have no good explanation. That happens with me with lots of music, but with Bruce, nothing. The music apparently doesn’t have a fragrance to me. OR, still too tired! I do not have brain fog from covid, but I’m still overtired 16 days out.
Some things just don’t match.
I went with a non-musical birthday for my theme today. It’s also Koublai Khan’s birthday, so I easily picked Muscs Koublai Khan.
Excellent substitution!
Happy Friday everyone! I have been off-line for a while, but now have a new computer and am catching up! Even though it is very autumnal out there today, I am sprayed up in vintage L’Occitaine Jasmine, which I was wearing the first time I met Bruce Springsteen. Happy Birthday Bruuuuuuce!
What a great perfume memory to have!
2nd that!
How cool! Mr. Springsteen comes across as a down to earth person despite all his time in the spotlight.
I participated today with Bruce Springsteen ” I’m on Fire” I matched it with Black Orchid.
Off to read the comments.
https://youtu.be/lrpXArn3hII
One of my favorites of his! I bet you smell fabulous 😃
One of my favorites too.
When I was looking it up I came across some comments that said this song was offensive and Bruce is creepy. Lol. People!
Love that song.
It is true that a lot of lyrics (rock, also rap & hip hop) are creepy. I always just figure you should not be looking for justice or behavioral ethics in lyrics.
Great song.
No CP points for me today; I wore Hermés’ Ambre des Merveilles, which was perfect for our gorgeous September weather today.
You smell great, of course!
I paired La Baie des Anges with Bruce Springsteen’s Pink Cadillac since I find it a fun pink scent
