Guerlain has launched Shades of Oud, with three new additions to the brand's L’Art et la Matière collection: Oud Nude, Cherry Oud and Oud Khôl.
With Oud Nude, Cherry Oud and Oud Khôl, Guerlain perfumers reveal the olfactive colours of oud wood, a black material with a powerful and complex fragrance trail.
Oud Nude ~ "A luminous, voluptuous interpretation of oud wood. Renowned for its darkness and sophistication, oud wood now lays itself bare upon contact with white almond. At the heart, a beguiling raspberry accord heightens the blond wood tones of sumptuous Atlas cedar. The bark of this incredibly tender, naked wood is sensually caressed by a voluptuous rose. Oud is illuminated and unveiled through the gentle touch of creamy sandalwood, then exalted by Madagascan vanilla tincture. // Laid bare, oud reveals its softness. In opposition to its usual intense darkness, Delphine Jelk celebrates the brightness of oud with great finesse. Unveiled in a new light, the material softens upon contact with bright woody notes to express its most delicately sensual facets." Additional notes include cumin.
Cherry Oud ~ "A floral, fruity interpretation of oud wood. Unveiling its most ravishing, crimson facets, black oud wood is lacquered with a red cherry note. Between red and black, a potent new olfactory hue is exalted through a duo of roses at the fragrance’s heart, composed of honey-toned Turkish rose absolute and Bulgarian rose essence. Caressed by a dusky leather accord, the rose darkens and falls under the scandalous charms of oud. A vibrant chromatic encounter between mysterious black and powerful red. // Oud wood blushes red and is freed of all inhibitions. In this tantalising olfactory transgression, Delphine Jelk has tinged intensely black oud with a lacquered tone of red." Additional notes include cinnamon and cardamom.
Oud Khôl ~ "A pitch-dark, leather-toned interpretation of oud wood. An olfactory celebration of the colour black, Oud Khôl reveals the most beautiful facets of dark oud. Akin to how a kohl pencil lends purity and intensity to the eye, Guerlain Master Perfumer Thierry Wasser has used oud to attain a hue of absolute black. Magnified by aldehyde enhancers, Oud Khôl stuns with its leathery, charcoal-tinged accord that seems to darken the woody resin even further. A moss accord with glints of carbon and a deliciously unexpected note of caramelised praline add richness to the palette. Here, hypnotic black knows how to tempt desire. // Amplified, oud reaches its most absolute form. To compose this scent in the blackest of black, Thierry Wasser has plunged oud into absolute darkness clouded with smoky, mineral notes. This is ultimate olfactory density, almost dizzying in its appeal."
Guerlain Oud Nude, Cherry Oud and Oud Khôl are available in 100 and 200 ml Eau de Parfum. New custom lid plates (see) by Moroccan artist Ghizlane Agzenaï have also been added to the packaging collection.

I’m looking forward to trying these!
Good, you can tell me if they’re must-smells 😉
I have read reviews – Oud Khol is the strongest with heavy oud note, Cherry Oud is next with moderate oud plus cherry, Oud Nude is the lightest with just a hint of oud, mostly floral.
About how they sound, then.
Not going to go out of my way to try these. Cherry sounds somewhat appealing but meh. I am not an oud fan generally.
I don’t mind oud but I am long since sick of it. It is not endlessly fascinating to me like some other notes, I guess.
Agree – Cherry Oud sounds very appealing to me, but I could see it turning out meh. Oud Khol would likely skew too masculine for my taste, and the prominence of “Atlas Cedar” in Oud Nude make me worry. But I am looking forward to sniffing all three.
I expected a tag of “please no more oud”.
I really don’t like the direction Guerlain has gone in, though a couple of the L’Art et la Matière in recent years have been nice. These three additions aren’t going to further enamor me to the house, but I sure hope someone likes and buys them.
Thank you for the reminder Joe!
