Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, mid August 2022

Posted by Robin on 13 August 2022 188 Comments

It's finally the weekend, and we've finally passed the dog days of summer. We’re celebrating with our standard old open thread poll (and, possibly, ice cream).

Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the last thing you ate or drank that smelled so good you thought it should be a perfume or the last perfume you tried that smelled like something you would eat, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Wearing Demeter Tiramisú, one of the more accurate dessert scents they’ve done, all milky coffee and vanilla cookies with a little bitter chocolate. It’s a pretty good thing to smell like!

Happy Saturday everyone! I had oatmeal with cinnamon, apples and vanilla salt in it for breakfast plus tea with cacao husks. I think a fragrance with any or all of these notes would be wonderful.

I’m in MFK Oud Satin Mood and thunking the sample. 😞

Okay, so is that vanilla, salt or vanilla salt? (I also add loads of fruit, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt to my oat meal! But then I got to wondering if there was such a thing as vanilla salt—which sounds like the name of a call girl, and like an ingredient I want!)

I make it – take a bottle of flaky or kosher salt, split a vanilla bean in half, scrape out the vanilla bean caviar and add it to the salt and bury the empty bean pod in the salt. I mix it up what the back of a spoon to infuse. It’s good for oatmeal, the tops of cookies, melon….

        Enjoy! 😊

I can’t say that it is fb worthy. The drydown is a very lovely vanilla with some spice, and it’s a dry, smooth vanilla, but I can’t really justify the price.

“Road Trip” as a scent of summer fields with a touch of gasoline might make a great perfume. And they could do flankers like PNW Road Trip (pine forests and coffee), Four Corners Road Trip (desert incense), Big Sur Road Trip (sea and mountain air), etc.

Excellent idea. I think you should release Road Trip at Xmas time and 4 flankers in the spring followed by another the following fall/winter….and 2 of the flankers should have vanilla. 🙂

I’m retesting Mojave Ghost, which complements today’s photo nicely. MG is still a love, but still not quite me, which is somewhat disappointing. There’s still a couple more tests in the little vial, so I’ll keep working on it — maybe this fall it will suddenly really click.

I’m all about the movies this morning. Wearing Nuit de Cellophane and enjoying the breeze and sunshine coming through my bedroom windows. This has probably already been discussed here, but has anyone seen the film Perfumes, starring Emmanuelle Devos?
https://youtu.be/kBkTaKPTUoI Looks like so much fun. Watched Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris last night with my husband and younger son. It was a fairytale far beyond the main plot line—London not being a hotbed of racial equity in 1957 for one thing—but it was a charming fairytale. Watching it, I had the most uncanny flashback to being about 6 or 7, and being curled up in my nanny’s bed watching a Disney film on Sunday nights. We didn’t own a television, but my live-in nanny did, and she would let me hang out in her apartment when there were Disney films showing. Goes to Paris has such a Disney circa 1960s-1970s vibe, in a good way. Anyway, at one point in the story the employees at Christian Dior are boxing up one of his dresses, and just before sealing it, the tissue paper is sprayed with perfume. By 1957, presumably there were several candidates for which perfume it was. Happy Saturday!

I started Perfumes but my eyes were bothering me to read captions.
      Another time.
Both my practice manager and a person on my team lost their dads within 2 days of each other. It’s been a hard week. And my neighbor who came here in 1964 from Denmark left yesterday with four suitcases, one including her husbands ashes to return to Denmark where her four sisters are. She is much braver than I to leave California behind.
Not good sleep, too much to process.
      Hair cut and mani pedi
Maybe some Indochine because I love it so.

Yesterday would have been my dad’s 86th birthday and I had a vivid dream about him just a few nights before.

After losing both my parents in rapid succession a little over 3 years ago, it’s still hard for me to wrap my head around. The loss is so significant that I feel like there are almost two people: the person I was before and the person I am now.

    SOTD = read on …

I started with sex. GET YOUR MIND OUT OF THE GUTTER! No, not that kind of sex! Officially, according to the Smell Bent label, it is S- E-X. I didn’t know what I was expecting but while wearable, it is not to my liking.

So I topped it off, and I mean topped it off, with Jo Malone Myrrh and Tonka, which I know is divisive, although on me, it was guaranteed to annihilate even the worst of the worst … and the world was good!

This was from an advice column in the NYTimes: A generous grandparent offered all his grandchildren and their families an all expenses paid trip to x-destination. All of them can make it except for one. This grandchild then asked for the equivalent cost of the trip in cash. 😱😱😱 The question, What would you do if you were the grandparent?

Seriously, I would have said no, as the offer was for a vacation and not access to an ATM.

Also, my philosophy is a grandparent or even parents do not OWE their offspring any inheritance, nor, on the flip side, saddle them with debts to repay.

    Your thoughts?

On that specific grandchild request, I think my answer would depend on the circumstances. For instance, I might agree to the request if the child couldn’t make it because he/she had just taken a new dream job, or had an important surgery scheduled, or something like that. On the other hand, if the child had a history of what I call “family grifting” (always asking for cash in lieu of gifts) or lying or other bad behavior, I’d probably refuse. But I do agree with you that parents and grandparents are not obligated to provide an inheritance to grown (or mostly grown) children, and children shouldn’t go through life expecting one.

        Great answer.

Regarding your answer being dependent on the circumstance, the grandchild and his wife has a baby (not sure how old) and they are saving to buy a house. I will give the grandparent the benefit of the doubt and say that he is aware of the possible limitations of a destination and have taken that into account. As to saving to buy a house, that goes to the no obligation for an inheritance.

I feel like the Grandparent is really trying to give the gift of family time. It would have been more appropriate for the grandchild to ask for a raincheck. Then at a future date his family could take their own trip with the grandparent.

And that the grandchild sees everything in terms of their monetary value, with no emotional aspect: a trip would cost you two thousand dollars (or whatever), so since I can’t accept the trip, you should give me the money instead. And that’s kind of sad.

The grandchild should not be asking for money, imo, because this was for a family trip.

Hajusuuri, I also saw that one.

Basically the grandson’s request initially struck me as egregious. Then I became somewhat sympathetic to a commenter who suggested the grandson might be feeling overwhelmed by paternal responsibilities. Of course, he could be both freaked out AND spoiled/entitled. I believe the grandparents had previously helped with his college expenses, hadn’t they?

I don’t feel the grandparents in this case have any obligation to give the grandchild the cash value of what they were going to spend on the cruise.

I am generally in favor of passing something on to the next generation or to a good cause rather than planning to use up every penny before one dies, if one is fortunate to have the choice.

I’m not so certain about the grandparent helping out with college expenses but of course that could have happened.

As to inheritance, the bottom line is not to be a burden to the next generation(s) so if that means spending all before one passes on, great. If not, if there is something left, one is free to choose distribution whether it be to the next generation and/or one or more charitable causes.

I like lillyjo’s suggestion of a rain check on a future trip with the grandfather. The grandparents I’ve known who have offered family trips have done it to spend more time with family members, including for their own pleasure. I’m sure the grandfather would have been pleased with a response along the lines of: “We’re sorry, we can’t go this time, but we’d love to accept your generous offer and spend time with you on another trip, if that’s possible.”

A single spritz of Vetiver Tonka because it’s gentle and easy. T-Rex is full of energy and lacks patience as I walk slowly out to the dog potty area. She is her usual ridiculously happy self which makes me smile despite my curmudgeonly mood. The only time I’ve seen her down was the night I got her when she was a puppy because she had such a terrible cough. She was so tired she could barely sit up, and just leaned against me while giving me the “poor me” eyes. “Cough, cough, cough cough cough!” I felt so bad for her, and helpless because there was nothing I could do for her…🙁

Hello friends — I’m back from summer vacation and have missed this community. I acquired some fragrant goodies while abroad, including some very good incense chips. My living room smells great!

No scent for me yet cuz I am recovering from Covid and don’t want any bad associations. I had lost my smell sense for a few days which was scary. I kept think about was how my perfume will languish 😢

3rd day I’m feeling like crap. My body isn’t doing well handling the heat despite 4 weeks of this heat wave.
Almost burning inside and colder outside? 5 seconds of AC and I need a blanket.

O and some of those lotions I mentioned a few days back were off and separated, so good to get rid of some unnecessary stuff!
Might try some of The Maker samples again today.

Oh no…I like to use the word malaise for what you’re feeling. Perhaps more air circulation inside your house may help even if you have A/C? I have an air cleaner in my living room and a fan each in my living room and kitchen. Upstairs, I have another air cleaner although it is more of a fan in the 2nd bedroom and my bedroom has a fan. The fans are all under $20 from Target / Bed Bath & Beyond.

I want to boost a book that Robin posted about earlier, Atlas of Perfumed Botany by Jean-Claude Ellena:

    https://nstperfume.com/2022/07/12/the-fragrance-of-our-generation/

This slim book is beautifully printed and illustrated, poetic, personal, and insightful. An example from the introduction:

“The words of Jean Giono are close to my heart: ‘The gods create scents; human beings make perfumes. Naked and frail, they can survive only by artifice (trickery). Perfume is the scent plus human being.’
This… struck me so profoundly that I reread it over and over; I still revisit his words today. Amazed by such wisdom, eyes aglow, I pored over the rest of his words with delight. It was stupefying that someone had intuited and spelled out what perfume means to me. I was young. I was ambitious. Never had a writer evoked the difference between scents and perfume so clearly. I breathed in the inspired words as deeply as I could. And they filled me with joy.”

One of the best things I’ve smelled recently was some young gorgonzola, all runny and unctuous. As I was smelling it I thought that it could *almost* be a perfume, like one of the strange Duchaufours, or a note in an Auphorie.

Trying Milky Musk EDT today. Very nice…I get some fruit on top w/ almondy vanilla and you guessed it musk underneath. I got a sample of the new EDP but haven’t tried it yet.

Mini She-ra is on the mend w/ a residual cough. We got her a PCR test and it was negative. I still think she had it and the article below is very good and makes me think she did as well. Her pediatrician said the same this to us a couple months ago…the viral load in vaccinated people can be too low to be detected via home or even PCR tests for some. There are no false positives but there are false negatives. Mr. She-ra’s home test lit up like the 4th of July on the 2nd of July for example.😆🎇 He was stunned and asked for a 2nd test and it showed the line immediately too. I am grateful he did test positive b/c he was instantly banished to the outer rim….aka upstairs. Wish we weren’t living in such interesting times…(you may hit a pay wall…but try a different browser 🙂 )

My son was very sick a few weeks ago, just for two days, but with a high fever, chills, much fatigue, etc. He did two PCR tests and two antigen tests over the following days — all negative. But I’m sure he had it. That article makes sense — the symptoms are caused by your immune system’s reaction to the presence of the virus, and if you are vaccinated, your system may be able to fight it off before you shed enough to trigger a positive test.

I’m wearing Gris Montaigne today. I really love this one in warmer weather. It tends to get lost during the colder months.

I have sn odd hankering for a perfume that smells like a pina colada. I bought an inexpensive coconut shower gel at Whole Foods that has this vibe and now I am craving it. I’m not hugely into gourmands so this in an exception for me. Does anyone have a recommendation? I’m like something that is not too juvenile . 😊

I thought of Demeter as well but wondered if it would open with a noticeable alcohol note? With all the gourmand perfumes out there, I’m surprised that some of the houses haven’t used this note profile. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank you, Petunia. We are all well, thankfully.

I do have just a couple Demeter scents; Thunderstorm, Vetiver and Pink Lemonade come to mind. The ones I own don’t open up alcoholy but they are fairly short-lived. I have used them for layering at times or if I don’t mind respraying throughout the day. On the plus side, they are relatively inexpensive.

I hope you find something that you love!

I don’t know if it’s the weather or what, but lately my favorite perfumes are getting on my nerves. I’m tired of smelling them, and even looking at the damn bottles. In a fit of pique last week I bought a cheap and cheerful bottle of the Body Shop White Musk, and right now it’s about all that’s working for me. (I will not go into detail about the two Hermés bottles I finally stopped waffling over *in addition* to the cheep and chearful musk. I don’t save receipts.)

Sunday, early morning and I am still commando having my first cup of coffee. After taking a shower, I am planning on wearing L’Artisan Mure et Musc Extreme or Fleur D’Oranger from the adorable minis I got from a very generous NSTer. It is a day full of errands and also cleaning at home. At least, it will be a cool and pleasant day to comfortably take care of everything.
Spent Saturday with my family at my aunt’s place. It was her birthday so she decided to celebrate with a barbecue. A couple of relatives and friends were invited, so we had a very enjoyable time. I wore Chanel No.19 EdT.

Looking thru the open windows now, I am getting that Fall vibe for the first time. The sun is shinning in a different way today, just few birds are singing and squirrels are more active than usual ouside, jumping, running and climbing trees non-stop. Nature is very calm and quiet today. Fall is knocking at the door! I will be sad to see summer go, despite my subtle complaints this year!

    Happy Sunday, everyone! 🌞

Happy Sunday! Glad you were able to celebrate your aunt’s birthday.

I joked in one of my comments that I may just switch my door wreath to one that is fall-themed to keep up the getting cooler vibe. That said, I was very surprised that Bryant Park seems to have started fall early, but likely because it is so dry.

Finally broke down and ordered groceries on-line today. I ran out of food, and thought I would just go the whole night without pain medicine and drive to the grocery this morning. Nope. Not gonna happen. Woke every half hour and finally gave up at 5am.

I’m in 1/4 spritz of Vetiver Tonka again and that might be a bit much. How does anyone function when takin narcotic pain medication? Really, I don’t know whether I’m coming or going or what I was thinking about 5 minutes ago. I think I already posted, but I would have to go through comments to figure it out. Geez, I’m pretty useless on pain meds…I miss my grandmother, who was always the best hugger…😵‍💫

For anyone having gall bladder issues, I highly recommend getting it out ASAP! It’s not going to get better and will cause more and more complications the longer you put it off. My hard earned .02 cents

Hi Deva, I hope you start to feel more like yourself today… ordering groceries online was a good idea!

I second your recommendation. Years ago I had a gallstone lodge in my bile duct, causing jaundice. I’d gone to my doctor not feeling well, and with pain in the gallbladder area. She figured it was probably the above causing the problem and said if you start looking yellow, go to emergency. That happened in a day or two so off I went. The stone was removed, they put a stent in my bile duct, and kept me there overnight. Not long after I had the gallbladder removed laparoscopically. A brother of my sister’s friend is a photographer who travels a lot, particularly to remote locations. He had experienced some gallbladder pain so decided to have the surgery in case it flared up somewhere he could not get proper medical help.

Feel better soon, rest and take it easy!

Lol I wiped my nose at church and someone asked if I was ok..I said oh yes, just perfume I guess..he said oh yeah some can wear too much..I said yes, that would be me lolol. I am to blame for overfuming myself and potentially others..oops. Hey, it talks about perfume in the Bible, so I am good haha. At least it wasn’t Poison this time..vintage Poison over application can cause sudden evacuations of a building. In the 90s..big bombs were welcome. Lol

    Happy Sunday!
It’s been a Byredo weekend for me,and my choices reaffirmed my love for the brand although I know it’s a fairly devisive house.
Friday was Mojave Ghost for the cp
Saturday:Accord Oud.It was the very first Byredo I bought and the blackberry/leather/wood accords bowled me over.
Sunday(today) I am in Pulp. It’s one of those ridiculous but fabulous creations like an Issey Miyake dress.
New Yorkers! There is some sort of trade fair/exhibition going on called Objectx in NY city,do go check it out if you can!The fabulous textiles from Mungo design(Proudly South African linens/towels/throws) are there! My house is basically a good ad for Mungo, esp in the towels and table linen department.
    XO’s

Agree about Pulp. It is one of my favorite fruity scents along with Bombay Bling and Arielle Shoshana Saturday.

I suspect Mungo is cheaper there than here…my sister and I were both admiring a bedspread for ages, she finally bought it and I might buy one eventually, but it is not cheap. I have also been hankering after a Juno throw for ages, but it is just more than I will spend on a throw blanket.

Wearing a body oil that was part of a birthday gift from my brother and SIL. It’s not a brand I know (I think they bought it on Etsy?), called Roam. The scent is “vanilla orange,” IOW, Creamsicle. Wouldn’t have been my choice, but the fragrance is light enough that now, a few hours post-application, I can detect it only by applying my nose directly to my arm. And my skin does feel smoother, so that’s good. I am trying to use up body products before buying anything else; this is a small spray bottle and will probably last a couple of week.

I topped that with a VERY light spray of Cristalle Eau Verte. As others have posted, I am getting tired of (or annoyed by) some of my longtime favorites, but not this one. If the weather remains very warm through September, I may thunk it — and this is my second FB!

SOTD = Tom Ford Vert de Fleur EDP

Thank God! It’s a green vetiver similar to Chanel No.19 EDP! ❤️

I so hate it when cars insist on going past me when I am already halfway out of my parking spot. I understand road rage but I kept my cool because nothing good ever comes out of road rage.

I hope everyone has a good week ahead. I am looking forward to the CP!

Some people are crazy. A couple weeks ago I was walking into a grocery store when this woman backs out without even looking. I did a hop and skip so I didn’t get crushed, but she merrily backed into a car. Who backs out of a spot going 20 mph, anyway? Crazy.

        NJ drivers, apparently 🤣

That said, when I’m walking through the parking lot, I usually walk on the wrong side and have eyes and ears pealed for idling cars that may suddenly decide to move.

Well I have a horrible story but will share it in the name of public safety.
About a week ago, a few cities away a man purposely ran down a random woman in a grocery store parking lot. Unfortunately the woman did not make it. Other customers were able to hold the man until the police came and hopefully he will never see the light of day again. People are nuts and they are everywhere.

Oh, lillyjo! That’s so horrendous, and like you say, violence like this is on the rise. I think human beings need to have a reset button! I cant even imagine purposely harming anyone or anything. It’s so abnormal!

Lol ever see that Russel Crowe flick about road rage? Ppl might think twice about manners on the road after watching that flick. I don’t honk unless absolutely necessary lol. Ya never know when a Crowe is around.

Same here, I rarely honk anymore unless it’s to make sure someone sees me…never just to indicate displeasure or anger.

Because I got so hot yesterday, I spritzes Sun Ripened Raspberry. This old favorite needs to go or just be put away. Too many perfumes to waste on not smelling great.
    Today:Dahlia Divin.
From an older decant box where everything is evaporating.
    CP excited, too!

Just emerged from a three day packing frenzy. Husband is leaving in the San Diego-bound UHaul van this week. The big movers won’t come until 8/26 for the rest. I have about a week’s worth of weeding and yard work to do after 2 months of neglect due to travel, but I’m saving it for the last minute so I don’t have to do it twice. If I start too early the weeds will have time to grow back. 😉 Wearing a bit of Mademoiselle Guerlain from a decant, all the full bottles are packed.
