Wednesday scent of the day 4/13

Posted by Robin on 13 April 2022 131 Comments

It’s Hump Day, Thomas Jefferson Day, Eudora Welty’s birthday and Scrabble Day. RIP Gilbert Gottfried. Happy 76th to Al Green! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Parfums de Nicolaï Balle de Match aka L'Eau de Sport.

Reminder: 4/15 is Tax Day in the US (update: except not really, since taxes are not really due until 4/18 this year because of Emancipation Day). Pick your poison: wear the fragrance (presumably from a sample) you'd buy if you had an unexpected windfall, or wear a cheap thrill.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try (but obviously sometimes fail) to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Prada Infusion d’Iris, from an “older” bottle. Not the current version I should say.

Yesterday was a very sad day here in NYC. I have no words.

I am happy to report back that I was nothing like Mr Bookman yesterday during my volunteering at the library ;)

I’m in Prada Un Chant d’ Amour. Smells like fancy soap category.
Yesterday Caroline Hirons updated skincare book was FiNALLY available in the US. I’ve been waiting since last November! I ordered it from amazon yesterday morning at 7 and it was delivered 13 hours later.? One day delivery, that was a first for me. Can’t wait to get home from work and read it.

On my way to work in a little vintage Krizia Uomo, a strange, hard-to-define scent: extremely complicated, but basically a pine tree in a black leather jacket with oakmoss stuffed in the pockets.

Lots of Shalimar on a rainy day. I hope everyone stays safe in the weather systems across the US today. In happy spring news, the leaves are out on my rose bush and a few buds are open on the maple tree; a red headed finch was singing to me before the rain started. Yay spring!

I’m wearing Fleur d’Orange whatever number by le labo for a thrilling say of doing our taxes. Feeling unsettled (I wonder if that’s just going to be permanent at this point?) and sad for the world.

PSA: Nordstrom currently has a lot of fragrances for 15% off (they’re price matching someone). I got that super cute blue 30 ml Do Son on sale and am super stoked – I was out for lunch with a friend and we wandered in and were pleasantly surprised. It’s a good chance to pick up discount byredos, diptyque, etc.

I am enjoying Viktoria Minya’s HEDONIST CASSIS.
I loved the original hedonist and bought a whole bottle. What an amazingly crafted bottle (which I seldom care about , but this was nice!) My neice loved it, so when she visited I bought a travel set and gave her the original and kept the others to try. Quite nice and a bit less sweet/honey than the original.

I really like the original, too. I was mesmerized by the bottle when this one first came out. Absolutely mesmerized! I think she may have been the first to add crystals inside a bottle. Haven’t tried any of the flankers, but the original is still a very good scent memory for me. Your niece will always have that bottle, I’m sure!

At the day hospital for my son—routine infusions and stim testing. Always a reminder of just how healthy and well he is. Lots of sick kids here. Everyone is so positive and hopeful, because that is how we play this.

I applied a few spritzes of a Pacifica body spray after my shower—something with patchouli- a few hours ago, but no perfume for the hospital. I’m thinking maybe I will wear one of my Zoologists when I get home.

I’m still planning to be in NYC second week in May. Really hoping to see some of you perfume folks if the timing works for you ?!

I’m trying out Pacifica Tibetan Mountain Temple from a lovely NST friend. Happy to be back home in Seattle after our trip to hike in Moab and see friends in Colorado. It was the first time I’d seen the actual fire damage from the fire that destroyed so many homes in the Louisville/Superior, Colorado area fire. It’s really shocking and sad to see the devastation of our beloved town firsthand.

In happier news, I went to see Dawn of dshperfumes last week. Unfortunately, I did not realize that I needed an appointment (partly COVID times, but they were also doing inventory). I explained to Dawn’s assistant that I now live in Seattle and was stopping by to purchase Lumiere. They very kindly (as always!) let me in. I got to chat with Dawn for a while (I’m a longtime fan) but didn’t want to disturb them further by doing my usual two hour sniff/wander/chat through her lovely Essence Studio. Along with the Lumiere, I did get a few samples, including Le Sazerac. Of course, afterwards, I immediately thought of several other things I should have tried or samples I should have bought…

I have lots of memories of the Louisville area there in Colorado, and I am pretty sure I would be distressed to see what it looks like now. The Blue Parrot restaurant was a special place to eat out when my brother and I were little.

Downtown would probably look somewhat different to you now, at least as far as the businesses, though I think it’s maintained its cool, small town vibe since we moved there in 1992. No more Blue Parrot – building is still there, but it’s got other fun stuff inside now (Verde restaurant, a pinball place and a shave ice place).

The Costco near my brother in northern Colorado was selling jars of the Blue Parrot’s spaghetti sauce for a while. He grabbed as many of them as he could lay hands on before they stopped doing that, and called it quits. Very tasty stuff!

But it’s been many many moons ( and noons) since I’ve seen downtown Louisville.

If I had a dollar for every time I rode or drove on US 36, I’d have a great retirement nest egg!

Love the spring flowers in the header photo! ?

I’m in the far, far, far dry down of Au Dela Narcisse since I’m wearing the same flannel shirt as yesterday. I moseyed around Dillards yesterday and came across Bronze Goddess Nuit, which I somehow managed to miss. Is this new? Or old, and I’m just so far out of touch I’ll never catch up? I never even heard of it. But I gave it a whirl and it distinctly reminded me of Guerlain Terracotta (although I haven’t laid my nose on that for over 5 years or so). Not for me, but it was nice to try. I DID fall in love with the Idole Intense bottles:

    https://www.ulta.com/p/idole-lintense-eau-de-parfum-pimprod2019972?sku=2573132&cmpid=PS_Non!google!Product_Listing_Ads&cagpspn=pla&CATCI=pla-296928933003&CAAGID=18002902230&CAWELAID=330000200002688172&CATARGETID=330000200002751916&CADevice=m&gbraid=0AAAAAD9rLH7uUzPIT71kXRAHO3ZqQs3rm&gclid=CjwKCAjw6dmSBhBkEiwA_W-EoPED1Z8GdbODJtxdw97-GUekyJ919ezRtxpLonSZjJFYlFMypDkKLxoCVbQQAvD_BwE

However, the perfume and I didn’t jive. But I do LUUUURVE those bottles. So thin, slender and unique! The small depression in the middle makes it feel just lovely in the hand.

I also picked up two more of the Milani matte lipsticks in Poppy and Petal. Their lip oil is quite nice as well. Also, FINALLY found some propane! It’s been a lot harder to find lately, kind of like my beloved but now rare Egg Beaters…

Wearing Carthusia Corallium and Mediterraneo, which make for a nice pairing. With Corllium I get citrus oils, sturdy herbs (sage and maybe thyme?), myrrh (including a moderate amount of sweetness), and some woody notes. With Mediterraneo I get juicy citrus pulp and pith, tea leaves, and mellow garden mint that is as herbal as it is minty. Its like a cool weather citrus-herb vs. warm weather citrus-herb comparison.

Tea today is a cinnamon black tea.

Today I decided it’s time to wear another perfume that I’ve been undecided about keeping, so I chose TDC I Miss Violet. Maybe I was inspired by the violet colored t-shirt I’m wearing? Alas, it’s a hard decision with this one, but I believe I’ll put my bottle up for swap. I’ve realized I’m quite sensitive to violet leaf, and there’s plenty of it here. I prefer my violet to not rely too heavily on violet leaf and find more success in SS Violet Mallow, Guerlain Insolence, L’Heure Bleue, Apres L’Ondee et al, and MdO Violette Fumee among others.

Also, I’d love some Portland recs as I’m planning a weekend trip there next weekend (22-24) from Seattle. We’re taking the train down and won’t have a car but we’re open to taking the bus. Mostly, we’ll plan to be downtown and in Southeast Portland, including visits to Fumerie and/or The Perfume House (been to both before). Definitely going to Powell’s, and the only special thing we’ve planned so far is to tour the Pittock Mansion. Would love to hear about your favorite restaurants, coffee and donuts (not really a huge Voodoo fan but do love Blue Star), hotels, sights, parks, etc.

Ages ago there used to be an amazing Rose Garden in Portland. Plenty of beautiful roses to see and sniff! It might be a little too early for blooms though…

I hope you have a great time and get to sniff to your heart’s content!

The Rose Garden is open: https://www.travelportland.com/attractions/portland-rose-garden/

The roses probably won’t be in bloom yet, so you might want to check out the Japanese Garden, which is lovely.
If you meet at Fumerie in the morning, head over to St. Honoré for lunch and authentic French pastries.
For dinner, I would get a Lyft and head a little ways north to Tabor Tavern. Not a tavern! It’s a nice, not-too-expensive restaurant/bar with good food and nice local vibe. Nearby is Mt. Tabor Park, which is an easy climb (trust me), and worthwhile views from the top on a nice day.
Can you tell I miss Portland a little? ?
I also fell in love with the Pittock Mansion.

Portland State University Farmers’ Market (I think it’s Saturday only but there are some hand held good eats); a quick walk around Saturday Market – there are still some crafty things but also a good number of mass manufactured which you can easily tell.

I am in the midst of making home made gefilte fish, which consists of pates of several different types of fresh fish ground together with onions almond meal and honey then poached in a broth made from the remainder of the fish. So I smell like a mixture of fish.
After I finish the recipe I will wash myself with lemon.

It almost feels like early summer today! ? I turned on the A/C earlier this afternoon. Crazy, since we had a Frost Advisory early this week.

After some thinking last night, I realized that Yep, I had left a couple of things off my Desert Island Perfume list. So Wrappings and/or Aromatics Elixir and Agent Provocateur are coming along, too. And I probably will think of something else I have to have after I post this. Such is the way of the perfumista!

SOTD = that Opium Eau d’Orient Orchidee De Chine EdT again.

Back to some sun after some brownish, dusty days. Listening to some lovely instrumentals and maybe gunna splash on some No. 5. In the mood for some Chanel aldehydes…maybe cause of that new release? Lol spicy rose Chanel sounds nice. Hopefully not drenched in patchouli.

SOTD is OJ Woman, from the sample set I got at Christmas.

My poor summer window box plants! The nursery had just started putting out their summer plants last weekend, and it should have been reliably warm enough for them. But yesterday it thunderstormed, hailed (multiple times), rained, and freezing rained. Fortunately I got them inside in time, so they’ll be hanging out here until things turn more normal. (Supposedly next week we go back to our regularly scheduled rain and temps in the 10s…50s F.)

I don’t recall if I’ve mentioned but I found the two documents I thought I was missing so I may just complete my tax returns in time to e-file and mail them. I have to do 2 state returns and I refuse to pay to do it. If it was $1-2 sure, but it’s way more than that!

Posting very late to say that I was in JM Wood Sage & Sea Salt for jury duty today. Have been out of town and was supposed to be back on Monday, but flight was canceled (apparently) because of SNOW in Portland (latest ever accumulated snow here!). Was lucky enough to get a seat on a successful flight yesterday, and I am so incredibly grateful for the family surrounding me on that flight — mom, dad, toddler and baby. Could have been the flight from hell, but they were all just perfect. No crying, no screaming, and only minimal pressing on the back of my seat by said toddler. The baby actually slept for 90% of the flight! Amazing.
