It's Friday (also, Drink Wine Day, Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, plus a bunch of birthdays: John Travolta, Yoko Ono, Paco Rabanne, Toni Morrison, Louis Comfort Tiffany). Our community project for today: testing, testing, 1 2 3...wear a perfume (or more than one) that you have never worn before, and tell us about it. (This is almost certainly a repeat.)
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I've been saving my sample of Arielle Shoshana Friday for today, so points for me. It's pretty much exactly as described, thus it's the perfect antidote to the howling winds outside (we have already lost power once this morning).
Reminder: on 2/25, for George Harrison's birthday, tell us a favorite George Harrison or Beatles song and wear the fragrance that matches the song. (Adapted from a suggestion by Old Herbaceous. We did a similar project for John Lennon in 2020.)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2022, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
From the Juliette has a gun discovery sample set I am testing Mad Madame and I don’t like it.
Scrubbing it off and will report back later.
Ready for a zoom call with a friend I am trying out Pat McGrath Fleur Fantasia Luxe Quad eye shadow.
The wind and the rain last night kept me awake so I am extra sleepy this morning. Need another espresso volcemente
Two scrubbers in one week, ugh! I have a hard time with that house, something in that base does not agree with my skin. Very hit or miss for me.
yes..I am with you. I like the concept but something about it bothers me.
I got a JHAG discovery set a few years ago at the same time as I bought the Atelier Cologne set (see below) and I didn’t like *any* of them. I know the line has fans (and I once thought Vengeance Extreme was a not-bad rose + patchouli) but I found them all cheap and strident, except for Not A Perfume, which was just boring, nothingy Cetalox.
I liked Another oud..but the rest is must MEH!
The nice think about these discovery sets is you can discover you don’t like them! HA
That cracked me up, LTSG! You made me realize I sometimes vaguely feel like a failure if I don’t discover something I like in those sets.
????
I found that Not a Perfume was boring too. I can’t imagine this was a very good seller, but I could be totally wrong. I am sure there is someone out there who loves it ?
I’m quite put off by the gun and bullet mentality–to the point where I pretty much refuse to try or wear any of them.
I liked Lady Vengeance but haven’t decided if it is travel spray worthy or not.
Sorry to hear your lost you power, Robin. We’re in the middle of a big three-part weather system: ever-increasing winds last night, then lots of rain overnight, and later today, the temperatures will plummet from a startling 11°C to -4° and everything will freeze over. At least we haven’t lost our power yet. *Yet.*
I have an Atelier Cologne discovery set that I somehow hadn’t tried two of the samples from. I put on Santal Carmin early this morning and it was a fruity floral, lots of apricot, nothing at all like the description. (It does eventually turn into sandalwood, but saffron, lime, and bergamot as the top? Nope.) Just now I put on Oud Saphir, and it’s quite nice, soft leather and oud, quiet and restrained. Too bad they’ve completely withdrawn their products from the North American market.
That’s interesting, Santal Carmin is all sandalwood and saffron on my skin. Hope your power stays on!
Yeah, all the reviews on Fragrantica were like “OMG saffron bomb!!!!!” but it wasn’t there for me at all, leading me to honestly wonder if they hadn’t put the wrong thing in the vial, but Atelier Cologne doesn’t sell anything like what I was smelling. I didn’t dislike it, but it was so at odds with what I was expecting.
Years ago I think they had an osmanthus heavy exclusive with Bergdorf’s if I remember right
I think that was Rendez-Vous.
I didn’t know they left the US? They have a shop in Nolita
It was announced a couple of weeks ago. “The company will withdraw from the U.S. and Canada by mid-March.” It was a bit of a shock, because the local Sephora always had a big selection. https://ca.movies.yahoo.com/atelier-cologne-pulling-u-canada-204732377.html
Like my beloved Annick Goutal did!
I so miss Annick Goutal!
It sounds like they will be coming back with something even better. My guess is it will have a different name than Atelier.
Oud Saphir is a love for me, and it lasts so well and has some nice changes as I wear it.
We did not lose it for long, and we have a generator now (after multiple long term issues) so I don’t care as much…but thank you for the concern! It is darned windy here though, kept my husband up all night so he is dragging.
Oud Saphir is a nice one. Too bad it only came in big bottles.
I’m in Parle Moi de Parfum Cedar Woodpecker. Notes of cedar, citrus and Iris. Sounds odd to me but totally works. I would describe everything I’ve tried from this house as “nice” and totally work appropriate.
The sun is back out today?but we are only in the single digits. Supposed to hit 50 on Sunday!
Today’s my day off but I’m going into work today to help move my office. My whole facility is moving into the new location they’ve been building next door. A fancy new state of the art facility. Exciting.
Fancy new buildings are so much fun. Enjoy!
Sharing your weather again – burr but loving the sun. Is you new office of the open concept type or do you have private spaces?
Office moves are SO much easier than home moves, I even almost enjoy them. Especially if they are to new digs!
First time wearing IA Fox in the Fowerbed and I love it! Glad I decided on this blind buy. To me it is a fresh, light jasmine scent. It will be great for this coming spring.
I’m picking up a small bottle of that at my sister’s today. Yay! I’ve liked the sample I have a lot.
That was my sotd yesterday for the winter storm. It transported me to spring until I’d open my eyes lol.
That’s funny.
Yep…that one and mine today are both great spring florals.
Good morning and TGIF!
Testing today LV’s Les Sable Roses. Velvety red rose with a gentle oud base. Quite a good one I think. The oud is not as animalic or sour. If I have a bottle I will gladly wear it.
Currently drinking chai, extra spicy.
I just polished off a cup of Upton Xmas Tea, which is chai-adjacent 🙂
Oh, that perfume sounds nice. I’m a big fan of rose + oud combinations. This one sounds better than the new Avon one posted above.
I’m wearing Maria Candida Gentile again, but for the first time, I am not even liking it, let alone loving. I have several untouched samples that I have bought of her fragrances. This one is Kitrea, which is described as having honey in both the top and base notes. I generally love honey, but something else is showing up, that I strongly dislike. I am going to scrub it, and start again with one of the Demeter fragrances that I keep in my office.
Aw, shame! I do love several of her fragrances but not all.
Testing Vanagloria aka Dominique Ropion tackles vanilla. Big lush and smooth
That one sounds so nice!
That is on my to try list because vanilla.?
I’m surprised you haven’t gotten to it yet because–vanilla
SOTD is Maison Dior’s Jasmin des Anges, following yesterday’s Dioramour., and Maison Lancome’s Peut-Etre earlier this week. Jasmin des Anges is very pretty. It is classed as a fruity floral, a category whose name I dislike, but it is really a light, fruity jasmine, with notes of peach, apricot, and osmanthus. I’m enjoying it on this unseasonably warm day!
You had me at peach…
I like peach notes too, and I think this one is particularly pretty. It’s almost more like sniffing the skin of the peach, if you know what I mean. Not too sugary or syrupy.
I was twins with Robin. I also saved my sample of Friday for today. I bought it with apprehension, because honeysuckle is a note that often does NOT work on me.
I tried Friday on paper – smelled lovely. On my skin? Oh nooooo. So I scrubbed and am now happily wearing Saturday, which works beautifully with my chemistry.
Remote teacher workday – yay! Of course, there’s some kind of network issue so we can’t access our gradebooks. I’m taking it as a sign to make some tea and snuggle the dog for a while.
It is a sign! Monday is a remote day for us. I will (not so) secretly hope for network problems as well.
Oh drat, that’s a shame! Saturday is great though, so there’s that.
Boo for a scrubber! At least you weren’t stuck with it all day.
Since I did a Sample Sunday last year, I don’t have a lot of unused samples at the moment. Found one – Mizensir L’Envers du Paradis. After a hit of bergamot all I can smell is Ambroxan. And doesn’t really do with this really cold day. Hopefully it will wear off quickly and I’ll go with a favorite later, if not I’ll try to scrub.
Blech. Lots of scrubbers today!
I dug out a sample of Houbigant Orangers en Fleur, which is like it says lots of orange blossoms plus tuberose. Actually its not too bad, but i am not much of a flowers girl. But at least it let me smell a bit of springtime (we had heavy storms here at the moment and some flooding in the northern part of Germany).
Dinner will be some miso brussel sprouts and kale with a orzo risotto and maybe some egg to top it.
Dinner sounds lovely, as does the perfume!
I still remember the first time I tasted kale, and how I loved it. I was probably around 7, and Mother may have told us what it was. I thought it looked like spinach and expected that astringent quality I usually taste in cooked spinach. Instead I got the sweetness good tender kale can have, and I was a fan for life.
Opened up my wet-wipe sample of Yves Rocher’s Mon Rouge and – oh dear. It claims to be “the power of the patchouli, the brilliance of the neroli essence and the sensuality of the iris”, but all I could smell at the beginning was a fairly nasty berry, possibly the black currant note. Actually wishing for the patchouli not to appear – or maybe I will simply go wash it off.
Unless the recommended application method is via a wet-wipe, I don’t know why giving out this type of sample is even acceptable. Have you seen the ones where you just get a puff of perfumed air?
Gasp! “Here’s some air” -?!
The only good side is that a puff by definition cannot be a scrubber. Have dealt with the red horror by lavishly spraying ELO’s big bellybutton, pretty well the only patchouli I have.
At least that worked out for you because sometimes, layering makes it worse!
Heh I too have a wet wipe sample of Mon Rouge, and I’ll open it very cautiously to make sure I really want to wipe it on me. I also have one of Plein Soleil, which the wet wipe describes as smooth floral. I’ll have to wait until I’m feeling brave for this application method.
Sotd is a sample of NV Pichola and it is lovely…expensive, but lovely. I’m on a Tuberose jag right now and Pichola is a good one.
Tuberose jag you say? I may have some samples for you!
Fun!
I adore Pichola.
I love tuberose, but NV is so expensive that I have never tried anything from that perfume house.
Commando for now, because I will eventually be triplets with Robin & Sistine. I’m headed to the States today and will pick up a whole bunch of small bottles and samples I’ve ordered. The weekend set is among them — I ordered it just for Friday, and will give my sister the others if she wants them (if not, I’ll be happy to keep them! I’m not sure what she’ll think of Sunday, as she’s fairly conventional, perfume-wise).
Happy travels ockeghem!
I’m wearing Golden Cattleya today because I don’t have any new samples to explore.
Also, I was bad yesterday and ordered a bottle of the original Agent Provocateur perfume…prompted by the fact that regret trading away my Jasmin Noir only to find out the other day that they’d discontinued the moody original for a much lighter, friendlier scent.
Since AP seems like the kind of thing that gets axed for not following trends, I decided to splurge and grab that one before it vanishes.
I have a big BUB if this too, so good and a bargain !
I bought a bottle of AP a couple years ago, I had swap regret from trading a bottle. I’ve barely touched it ?♀️
I have a backup bottle of AP, too. And have zero regrets!
I’m testing the new Diptyque Eau Rose edp today. I like the addition of the chamomile note, and if someone were looking for a more opaque version of the edt, this might do it, but I will stick with the garden-perfect edt when I need a fresh rose fix.
Thanks for all the galvanizing thoughts before my meeting yesterday. It turned out to be more of a “let’s get organized before we have to have the really hard conversations” sort of meeting, so it was less emotionally charged than I had expected. So, as I say so often these days, we’ll see…
Glad the meeting was better than your worst fears!
Not participating in the CP today as the winter storm flooded everything, froze it solid, then dumped 6+ inches of snow. It’s sunny and beautiful with intermittent lake effect snow today but I am definitely needing a comforting friend, so Coco it is. The upside of the sunshine is that some birds are back, I saw a pair of robins this morning. A sign of spring!
Spring! That storm sounds nasty but birds are good.
I had to chuckle when I saw the poor robins huddling on that frozen branch, were they thinking they came back too soon?
I hope the Coco is keeping you warm, you smell amazing!
Thank you ?
Yuck on that freeze after the rain!
I grabbed a handful of samples and headed to Fragrantica to see what would appeal. I had a wee bit of PdN Sacrebleu Intense, so decided to use that up, since I don’t believe I’ve ever tried it. And now I’m thinking I might have to get myself a small bottle.
Cold snap here before warmer on Sunday and then snow on Monday and Tuesday. We had a lot of visitors at dusk last night. Counted 11 deer hovering in our woods. After they left, a bunny came by. And then more deer as I was heading to bed. This morning, we had a squirrel munching happily away in the feed bucket. Highly entertaining…. https://www.instagram.com/tv/CaID6CJlRc4/?utm_medium=copy_link
That squirrel looks so funny!
Joining the CP x 2 in samples of Ostens Impression Cashmeran Velvet and Ostens Impression Jasmine Absolut. Also just added a small scoop of ice cream to my coffee – always a team player! – since it’s “Eat ice cream for breakfast day.”
Happy Friday, all! Oh – and has anyone given their thoughts on the new Eris Scorpio Rising? I’m way behind on comments this week, but would love to hear about Scorpio. Thanks.
You smell fabulous!
😀
A couple of NSTers have tried it and mentioned “cinnamon”.
I see that cm8’s stutter has made an appearance again!
Lol ?
A couple of NSTers have tried it and mentioned “cinnamon”.
SotD House of Oud Crop 2021, a sample from Lucky Scent I’ve had a while. Looking up C21 again today , I remembered I got it because I like gourmands, oud and particularly because I wondered what $460 perfumes from special batches are like. I also got Mr. Mossy in on the test. Knowing nothing about it, he said it smells like candy. He does not like sweet perfumes so I’ll have to ask him later if he notices anything else. I had forgotten it was a cacao oud blend and my first reaction was “yum, it smells like a Tootsie Roll.” I also forgot it was so pricey. About an hour in I am getting all kinds of wonderful wafts of good chocolate, oud and other mysterious notes. It is a glorified Tootsie Roll; I think the impression also comes from that wax paper taste that lingers on TR’s seeming like the delicate, papery oud of this one. Does anyone have any House of Oud favorites?
Now I want a Tootsie Roll!
I am “needing comfort” twins with ringthing this morning. Everything in my world seems unsettled right now — even the weather, which is vacillating between chilly sunbreaks and dark clouds — and we will be celebrating a family birthday this evening at a restaurant we’ve never been to before, so lots of iffy-ness here. To cope I’m wearing Carthusia 1681, which I find grounding and soothing in equal measure, and intending to regain my equilibrium by dinnertime.
Unsettling is tough, I feel you.
I hope you find some peace and quiet today
Hi twin, isn’t perfume wonderful? That a scent makes us feel comforted, soothed, grounded. Have fun tonight ?
Wishing you comfort and a hope that tonight’s family birthday celebration brings you joy and the restaurant an unexpected pleasure!
Hope that your evening was a chill and enjoyable experience.
I’m sampling Maison Violet’s Pourpre d’Automne which is a slightly musky warm powdery violet on my skin.
How do you like it Holly? I received a free sample with a purchase. I did eventually buy a bottle. For me, it has a vintage vibe.
I’m a huge fan. It’s such a beautiful violet.
It is lovely!
I think it was you who inspired me to pull my sample out today!
It’s lovely! Definitely fbw!
Sounds really nice! I will have to check it out; I’m a big violet fan.
I’m a big violet fan as well!
Sounds like your sampling mojo is back and in fine fettle!
Another chilly sunny day here, and I couldn’t ask for more! Except, maybe win the lottery!
I’m wearing the tiniest spritz of En Voyage Zelda today for all it’s waxy, tropical goodness. This scent lasts for-EVER on me, hence the tiny spritz.
Drinking my scorching coffee and finishing off my sourdough toast as I do laundry. Exciting Friday for me! ?
I’m wearing Iris Fauve by Atelier des h’Ors. It is very pretty but I still detect a smidge of a note that just doesn’t work for me. Pity, because I love their bottles. I’m getting amber and cinnamon with a floral woody dry down. After the initial spray, it’s fairly quiet on my skin. I’d be happy to own this if a bottle fell into my lap. Happy Friday!
Sorry Deva! My phone is constantly going to reply when I scroll. I didn’t realize that this would attach to your post!
Enjoy the cold! I’m ready for spring. ???
No worries! Stop by and visit any time. ?
You smell wonderful, Diva! And I’m having sourdough toast right now while I fold clothes, so we are what? boring Friday twins? Lol.
Ha, Deva not diva
I have been eating sourdough toast every morning for breakfast the last couple weeks. So. Damn. Good.
I keep thinking I will eventually tire of it but maybe not this year!?
LOVE good sourdough bread. ? Maybe I will get up the energy to grab some from Wegman’s in the near future.
SOTD = Amouage Attar Saffron Hamra
I am (happily) unexpectedly WFH. That rain and wind last night and this morning were epic. So far, I haven’t seen any damage looking outside.
Since I am at home, I decided to try the 5th sample from my Amouage Attar set. Oh my! This is the most complex of the 5 and I am loving it: spicy floral amber leather and vanilla. If I can convince myself to buy a FB without testing the last sample, this would be it!
https://www.instagram.com/p/CaIJSbROTLN/?utm_medium=copy_link
In split news, all the splits have been decanted and I’ve also selected most of the samples to include. They will all go out tomorrow. Still available U.S. only are two 5mL of Eris Parfums Mxxx. at $19.50 and three 10mL of Amouroud Miel Sauvage at $13.10. There’s no shipping or packaging cost since I am adding freebies. Do not dibs here; just click on my name and email with subject name of perfume.
Glad you found a good one in the sample set!
All of them are good, but are they good enough to shell out the $500+ for 12mL?
Yowza, that’s steep! ?
Yay for vanilla! 🙂
You are an avid shopper and bargain hunter I know?…I was hoping that NM or Saks and other stores would do a $50 off $250 deal or the like but they all seem to be doing gift card offers…was hoping for better deals this President’s Day weekend…was debating getting the TF rose trio travel spray set but hoping for a discount which seems somewhat elusive as we enter the weekend. I smelled all 3 yesterday and like the d’Amalfi the most. I figure I can swap the other two if need be. You see the rationalizing????
The NM gift card offers are the type where the $s are taken off your total on the spot. Saks makes you purchase something else to utilize the gift card. I have been too busy to look but now maybe I will ??.
That front was a big one, wasn’t it? I hope we aren’t getting another one like it anytime soon.
Not participating in the CP, I felt compelled to wear Rochas Byzance, despite the fact that it makes me cry. It was my signature scent when I was 20 and had a heart filled with hopes and dreams.
I have that response to Escada’s Margaretha Ley. I pull it out to sniff furtively, or even wear–but only when I feel very high on life, for the same reason.
I dont know what i would do if i could sniff Jil Sander Women II again, this was my signature in my early twenties, but its sadly discontinued and the few remaining bottles go for crazy prices…
Someone should invent a heart surgery that puts the hopes and dreams back in. They would make a fortune.
What a lovely thought.
???
I wonder how I would react to trying the perfume I wore back in junior high?
In MPeG’s Patchouli 1969 from a decant I ordered a week or so ago. Saved it to try today to be on point. Also burning Morning Star patchouli incense–a quiet patchouli incense. As for the perfume, I’d say it is a middle ground patchouli. Not complete headshop, but it has earthy undertones, but also some floral, and weirdly I get fruit as well, in the initial wearing at least. The fruit and flowers eventually fade away to a woodsy patchouli (more wood than earth) dry down.
Ah, forgot about that one! And starting to forget about MPeG altogether, really don’t hear about them as much as I used to.
Trying the new formulation of Gallagher Carpe Cafe with amped vanilla today…never tried the original version.
Getting coffee and sandalwood in the opening so far…
Where’s the vanilla?
Not too much yet. Mostly woody coffee I’d say.
Reminded me of…Where’s the beef? 😉 ?
That was such a funny and effective ad! ????
https://shows.acast.com/friends-of-shakespeare-and-company-read-ulysses-by-james-joy/
The sun has just come up and the entire sky is the colour of a blood orange. The warm north west wind is blowing ( a dry foehn wind ) so all the windows are open.
I came across this free podcast yesterday. It’s hosted by Shakespeare and Company and features multiple authors, actors , musicians reading James Joyce’s Ulysses in bite-sized parts between now and June. A large range of readers from Jeanette Winterson to Eddie Izzard. A bit less daunting than reading the book. No CP points for me but am happy in Cristalle.
You smell divine.
“Happy in Cristalle” deserves its own points! You smell great!
Thank you for sharing this link. Ulysses has been on my to-read list for years — this is a good way to do it.
That morning sunrise sounds like it was a spectacular one.
I’m sampling vero.profumo Naja this morning. It’s sooooo sweet and it feels tenacious. I may regret spraying both wrists, I probably should have done only one.
Hope it has long since faded, foxbins!
Oh wait! I wanted to tell you all about a bottle of perfume I am buying–paying cash and driving to this woman’s house to pick up (bringing hubby!). From a neighborhood email list group, my mom forwarded to me an email from a woman selling several unopened boxes of perfume–Chanel No. 5, L’air du Temps, and one other… not remembering. I almost completely dismissed it as someone selling fakes. But I took a closer look at the photo and saw a No. 5 eau de cologne. So I emailed the woman. Turns out the perfumes were purchased by her mother in law on a cruise she was on over 30 years ago, and have sat in a drawer ever since. I figured I would roll the dice and offered $100 for the unopened edc. What do you think? Am I am about to throw away $100? She also sent me a photo of opened perfumes that had belong to her mother in law (yes, this is a little Dickensian–the woman I am dealing with is in her 70s, so . . . ), which included an old bottle of Miss Dior, about half full. I may purchase it as well for a nominal price–if it isn’t a splash bottle.
This is exciting!
Report back!
What a thrill! An old bottle of Miss Dior – priceless!
I think you might be on to a great find! And, I’m thinking even if the Miss Dior is a splash…if it was in a nice Grandmother’s dresser drawer, could it be so bad? I understand why people don’t want to use a used splash: perfectly reasonable. But I ask myself, would I throw a bottle of [fill in fabulous vintage fragrance name] in the trash? That is what could happen to any vintage that knowledgeable perfume hobbyists don’t find first!
Wow that’s exciting!
How fun! Enjoy your finds, great treasure hunting!
Buy them all, who knows what else might be hidden in the drawers…but don’t offer. Ask her what she wants first. And ask to smell one of the ones that is not interesting and valuable, and tell her it has gone off….
Vintage L’Air du Temps! Please report back!
Please let us know what you found there! Exciting!
What fun!!
Friday! Last day! all of next week of to do as I wish (well somethings that need doing, too)
Testing G&B Rosewood today. No surprises here, rose and wood.
Woo-hoo!!
Huzza, huzza for your new horizon!
Yay for a week of doing your stuff!
Hope you enjoy your week of freedom! ✌?
Happy Friday!
Robin, I hope the winds die down and your power stays on!
I’m CP compliant today in Molecule 01 + Mandarin, and it’s very lovely and pleasant. I can’t imagine anyone objecting to this unless they can’t stand Iso E Super. I look forward to wearing this sample more in the summer.
Yes on both counts, thanks!
Forgot about those flankers, I should try them.
I’m working tonight and not up to sampling. I am wearing a true love. Bottega Veneta.
Another weather advisory in effect. I am so sick of winter.
You smell great!
I have a room spray from the BV collaboration with L’Artisan ages ago. It’s a beautiful iris and leather – I wear it as a fragrance and it makes me happy every time.
You smell wonderful. And I’m with you on being sick of winter.
You smell so good!
Oh, you stink really pretty today! ??
Smelling great! We are “working tonight” twins.✌?
I forgot and put on Bois d’Argent, so I’m waiting for it to subside before I try a couple of samples from Maison Tahité. It was a set of five from luckyscent, and apparently I haven’t been in the mood to rock vanilla lately. Let me know if you’ve tried any and liked them – help me choose from the 5, please. ?
As I recall, Floravanilla was the one I tried a couple times – pretty, wearable, I didn’t need more of it. Vanillade was a stinker to me, but my nose is random sometimes, so ymmv. The others were forgettable, I guess, since I don’t remember anything about them. Be interested to know your experience. I usually like vanillas, so I was a little surprised to be so luke warm to this line…
Meridafay, you were right! A week later and I can’t even remember what I tried. As I recall, both were pretty meh, but I can bring them to one of my students and they will surely enjoy them. 15 yo girls and vanilla usually run along nicely together.
It seems both countries US and the UK are experiencing storms today.
From my newish I Profumi di Firenze discovery set I am testing 1941. It’s woody and spicy, I smell a lot cardamom and some mint, it might fare better in warm weather, there were others I liked much better in the set.
That sounds nice to me, and I’m intrigued about their discovery set. I may have to look into that.
Today’s wild weather was mostly in the morning hours, thank goodness! There’s still a Wind Advisory here, but the windows aren’t rattling and shaking anymore.
Heathrow Airport made the weather news over here. It looks like quite a few people had white-knuckle landings there today… ??
No points for me today or yesterday,as I have been wearing some very familiar perfumes in my collection!
Yesterday to work I was in Costume National 21,the evening I went out for italian with friends in Bois Farine(dear gods of perfume, this might be my desert island perfume!!)
Today I had brunch at a quaint little place called “Alice in Waterkloof”,it’s one of Pretoria’s best kept secrets.
SOTD was Montale’s Crystal Flowers,I’m running low on this one,but its either been renamed or discontinued,I cannot tell with this line what is ever going on!Haha!
Happy Friday!
XO’s
Does this mean you will not pursue a BUB based on your initial search?
I have to have Crystal Flowers iny collection,so a BUB/similar/exact perfume will be most welcomed. It is so good,a familiar but extraordinary “happy” bouquet of flowers.I’m yet to smell something that comes close.Any suggestions are always welcome!
I’ll be on the lookout!
Merci!
Rather impressed that you have a “desert island perfume” or two in your amazing perfume wardrobe!
Well if push comes to shove,I’ll have my Top 10 desert island perfumes ready to go!Haha!
Should I list them?,??
Yes please!
I’ll do so once the lazy weekend poll is posted.Feel free to list yours as well,if such a list exists!??
I don’t think I have any samples or bottles that I haven’t tried, so I’m non-compliant today.
I am, however, smelling absolutely gorgeous in Nawab of Oudh, from Ormonde Jayne. Not much Oudh about it, really — it’s bright and green, with transparent citrus notes and hints of spice here and there. Like many OJ scents, it has a slightly exotic vibe that I love.
Yes, you are smelling absolutely gorgeous! I love Nawab of Oudh as well.
It’s good, isn’t it? If it were less expensive, I’d buy myself a full bottle. As it is, I think I’ll stick with my travel spray.
Hope you are smelling fine, as well!
I love many of the Dame Perfumery fragrances, and for today’s cp I decided to try one of the many generous samples Jeffrey provides that I hadn’t tried yet. So I reached in and pulled out Vanille Farfelue Noir Femme, one of the scents under the JD Jeffrey Dame label, combining ‘postmodern’ with ‘retro’, and I’m lovin’ it. As a fan of both aldehydes and vanilla, I really enjoy this combination, and I’m really delighted that in the floral mid-notes it’s the violet note that stands out for me, my favorite floral note. A beautiful creamy but not-too-sweet blend, it evolves nicely through the day and is perfect for a cold but sunny winter day! I was disappointed to see it marked ‘Sold Out’ on the website but when I inquired was told it would be replenished in about 3 weeks. I see a bottle in my future.
After yesterday’s snowstorm (only about 3 inches in my area) I’m really enjoying today’s sunshine with warmer weather and more sunshine predicted for the weekend. Wishing everyone a good one ahead!
Laila-
I would be curious what others you have tried from Dame Perfumery. I have often thought about sampling some from that house, but haven’t yet.
I wear and enjoy all of the Artist’s collection edp’s – seasonal favorites are Black Flower Mexican Vanilla in winter for its cozy warmth, Earth Mother’s caramel-warmed patchouli as spring awakens, the citrusy spice of Sky Father in summer, and the spice and woods of Dark Horse in the fall. Desert Rose anytime the mood strikes for a green-tinged slightly jammy rose. I really love Chocolate Man, a great dark chocolate scent. I haven’t tried all of the edt’s, but my favorite Cassis Rose & Sandalwood is a softly sweet combo of 3 of my favorite notes and I also like the Peach Blossom, Violet and Vanilla.
I think Jeffrey has resumed his sample-for-a-postcard promotion and he is extremely generous in sending extra samples with anything you order and extremely quick to respond to any questions/concerns you may have. The best customer service I’ve ever experienced!
Hope that’s helpful!
This is very helpful. Thanks so much.
Ooh, this sounds really lovely!
t is really lovely, and it evolves nicely throughout the day – an interesting modern twist on retro. And very affordable! I was so disappointed when I saw it was sold out on the website. Sent a message to Jeffrey asking if more would be made available and he responded almost immediately, yes, in about 3 weeks. Yay!
Jeffrey Dame’s Cassis Rose & Sandalwood was the wedding perfume for a friend of mine. She LOVED it! I was happy to provide it for her special day.
That one sounds nice too.
It is pretty in the best possible way.
No testing winners for me today. I tried Hermetica Jade888 on my right arm, and it basically smells like fancy shampoo. Shout out to Oakland Fresca for generously including the travel spray in a recent freebie package. I’ll pass it along to someone else shortly. On my left arm, I’ve got Byredo Eleventh Hour, which is basically a mulled wine perfume. It also makes me think of those mulberry candles that were everywhere in the 90s. No successes this week from doing the CP, but that’s ok. It’s nice to not have yet another perfume to yearn for.
Happy Friday! So happy for a three day weekend.
Money saved! I did not do a count but it seems there are more disappointments than winners.
Doing a retest today of CdG Chlorophyll Gardenia for CP points. I first tried it in September and my notes then were: “very green opening. Sharp, even. Grass green. Gardenia is there too, but definitely secondary. I need a second wear. ” Today I find my first impression stills holds for the opening. After a few hours the sharp greenness does step back (but does not disappear) and lets gardenia come to the front. It is a fresh but thin gardenia. The milkiness in it is like 1%, not whole milk, and definitely not cream. I really want to like this one more than I do. CdG + Gardenia should = home run for me, but the green notes are sharper and more bitter than I want to wear, and the gardenia isn’t the lush creamy kind of gardenia that I like. Oh well.
Drinking chocolate pu’er today and looking forward to the long weekend.
Money saved!
Some green notes used in perfumes now are definitely sharp and “stabby” to my nose. Don’t care for those!
Enjoy your long weekend!
Hello everyone, I send best wishes to all of you who’ve had a big winter storm with wind and snow. We also had a weather event of sorts; yesterday was quite warm but in the afternoon things cooled off rapidly, and it was also windy here. The weatherman said we dropped from 80 to 44! It’s always strange when you have to switch the thermostat from a/c to heat on the same day!
After spending a lot of time waiting at the doctor’s yesterday (the PA was actually two hours late–they’d had an emergency with a woman who was just there for a checkup but they discovered she had DVT–I was examined and all was well. I got the dressing off and staples out, and a new smaller bandage in its place, and some tips on walking better and new exercises. I came home and had a nice evening. Went to bed and slept in until 1:30 p.m. this afternoon–Wow! I guess I was more tired than I knew,
For today’s CP I’m trying Jivago 14K which I must have gotten as a sample from someone with a purchase I made awhile ago. I thought from the look of it, it would be loud and cheap. I guess though it’s a real line and some people like it. This one unexpectedly smells mainly of tuberose to me, which is fine except that it’s awfully sweet. It’s not really a scrubber but probably not worth a repeat wearing.
Last night as a little reward to myself for my good checkup, I ordered an array of samples from Luckyscent. It’s fun to have something coming in the mail.
Have a good weekend, everyone!
Glad you got a great report! And samples are nice unless you’re like me and don’t stick to one set. I think the Amouage Attars were the ones I’ve been diligently testing.
Good to hear you are mending nicely and back home again. ?
Great news on your doctor visit! And yes, after that, you should get something to celebrate getting thru it all.
That is some serious sleep!! So glad you are doing well. (And now I hope the woman with dvt is ok too)
Yay for good progress!!Up up and away!??
Glad your Dr’s appointment went well and you’ve progressed to a smaller bandage. Also glad you got such good sleep, surgery is hard on a person’s whole body.
Wear Galanos today. It’s another sample that I forgot that I had, and just as well I guess, since I think the perfume is long out of production. I do like it, because carnation… as it used be, before IFRA. Haven’t read comments yet, so I’m going to trust that everyone has been having a great Friday!
Oriza L. LeGrand still has a carnation fragrance, if you are looking for something available now. I got a sample of it and rather liked it.
Galanos is is a lovely scent. You smell great!
Posting late today!
Definitely not the kind of weather I would eat ice cream for breakfast in. A gigantic weather front roared thru early this morning, and I thought we were going to lose a couple of windows from that wind. Thankfully NOT!
Today was the contractor’s last day here for drywall repairs. Both Spooky and Teflon decided to watch him finish things up. Minimal mess after all was said and done.
SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EdP, from the Sample Stash and one of you fine folks here. I’ve tried the EdT before, but not this one. It starts off with the same top notes, but is different in the heart notes. It strongly reminds me of at least one of my cousins, but as far as I know, nobody in my family ever wore Chanel. It’s a puzzlement!
You smell wonderful! The weather was something else. My haircut appointment was moved to a week from today instead of on Monday. The hairdresser’s father passed away.
I’m glad I had the chance to try the EdP. I like it, but I think I like the EdT more.
That weather front kept me awake for at least an hour this morning! I’m surprised that I didn’t lose power.
Aw, that’s a shame about your hairdresser’s father. But I think the weather might be nicer next Friday than on Monday.
I’m in a wind advisory tonight. I hate wind! Glad your windows stayed intact.
You smell great! Love the edp!
If you hate wind, then don’t travel to Wyoming! It’s notorious for that.
I think the wind sounded so bad because it was suddenly raining buckets at the same time. So the rain probably made things sound worse than what the really were.
The Wind River Range!
My personal experience has been driving in a car on I-25, north from the CO state line to Cody. The wind seems especially bad near Casper and Thermopolis.
