Scent is crucial

Posted by Robin on 31 May 2021 Leave a Comment

Unexpectedly, butterflies’ vibrant wing colours play no part in mating but scent is crucial. The green-veined white’s scent, citral, consists of two isomers, geranial and neral; both are needed for the males to successfully woo a partner. They waft this aphrodisiac pheromone around throughout their life to attract females and repel rival males. Females release their own scent to inform the male she is ready to mate too.

Lazy weekend poll ~ 5 questions, Memorial Day weekend 2021

Posted by Robin on 29 May 2021 211 Comments

An update of a pandemic poll we did in late March 2020, again in May, September, and then February. (Maybe this will be our last pandemic-related poll?) As always, answer as many or as few as you like, or just talk about something else.

1. Have you been vaccinated against covid-19? If not, and if you plan to be vaccinated, when do you expect you might get a shot? (Obviously not everybody is planning to be vaccinated, but ya’ll know we are not going to have a vaccine debate here, so no need to start a discussion on that topic, and for that matter we’re just sharing our news here, not debating anything covid-related.)

2. Rate the virus-related restrictions in your area from 1 to 5, with 1 being complete freedom of movement and 5 being complete lock down.*

3. If your area is back to normal (or opening up), are you continuing to restrict your own movements / exposure? What number would you assign to your own freedom of movement?

4. Are there any fragrances (or related items) you bought, or didn’t buy, just because of the pandemic? How else has the pandemic changed your fragrance shopping or usage?

5. What fragrance are you wearing today? And do share something — anything! — wonderful with us, including any plans you might have for the weekend…

The (almost) daily lemming

Posted by Robin on 28 May 2021 Leave a Comment

Yet another item in Diptyque's upcoming (due in early June, although a number of the items are already out in stores) Summer Essentials collection celebrating the brand’s 60th anniversary (and this isn't even the last lemming-worthy product): a reissue of Vinaigre de Toilette multi-use fragranced tonic, originally introduced in 1975. "The iconic Vinagre de Toilette is reinvented for the summer with an infusion of plants from the Mediterranean basin. With aromatic notes of lavender, rosemary and thyme, its fragrance refreshes and soothes the senses. Its uses are many: it softens bath water for a relaxing soak; after a shave or a shower, it tones and invigorates the skin. Add a few drops to the final rinse after shampooing to leave hair soft, glossy and lightly scented. At home, infuse it in boiling water to purify the air in a room. The artist Luke Edward Hall's colour illustrations decorate this limited edition. The bottle also features a genuine sprig of lavender, evoking the Mediterranean inspiration behind the composition." $80 for 200 ml at Saks.
