Dickinson/moss/chypre day 3, and I am in EL Knowing parfum, in my opinion one of the all-time great chypres. I dabbed a little inside my mask so I could smell it all day at work, too.

One of my best friends ( who now lives in Melbourne) used to wear this every day and it smelled so good on him.
Started off in LaVanilla Pure Vanilla from my tiny rollerball bottle, then decided to top it with a dab of 5 o’clock au gingembre. I may not be CP compliant but I do smell yummy. The layering seems to have brought out what I am perceiving as a light tobacco note. Is that possible?
A database I use to make clips for my film course was down yesterday as I was writing the final exam, and two of my library colleagues worked several hours into the evening (well after the end of their work day) to help me get access to the materials I need. I work with great people. I wish we weren’t in a situation where so many are fantasizing about quitting or retiring early.

Very nice combination. I wear Peony Blush with Wood Sage and Sea Salt in the summer months.
Started with a sample of Pichola and found it too tuberose heavy so I added American Beauty on top. It smells better now but I would prefer straight up rose from American Beauty by itself. Tuberose is my perfume nemesis.

I am not a big fan of vanilla, but I woke up craving for it. So BBW Vanilla Bean Noel shower gel and body lotion followed by several sprays of L’Artisan Couleur Vanille is giving me the comfort I was looking for.
On my second cup of coffee and having few pieces of dark chocolate. Ready to face the other half of the working day.

I used BBW Vanilla Bean Noel shower gel, scrub and body cream last night before bed. I am not a huge vanilla fan either, but this was a nice comfortable fragrance for the night.

Sotd is Caron Aimez-Moi. I’m so grateful to have found this fragrance on NST when we highlighted violet. I’m not sure how much it’s the fragrance or me aging (probably both) but today I’m in revery and pretty sure ED and the bees would like this too.

At this time of year the Manuka is in flower so the dark green bush covering the slopes is broken by drifts of white. From this distance it looks like patches of snow. . Looked up bobolinks as I have never heard of them. Wearing sun.

Bobolinks are birds. They are like sparrows or little songbirds. Very common in the US northeast.

As a gardener she must have mentioned Roses, so Perles de Lalique for work and Lady Rose Lion for the evening. The more I wear it, the more I like it.

I think one of my dregs today is quite suitable for the cp: Drole de Rose. The other is CBIHP’s Rare Flowers Series Jasmine Sambac which I can barely smell. It has summoned up revery and lament, though. I never got to smell CBIHP’S Doll’s Head and I will never forget the magic of that smell on Christmas morning.

Made it through the heavy meetings in the front end of the week, and wound up having a weirdly wonderful time of it yesterday. Yesterday’s 6-hour in-person workshop involved a delightful group of people (including lots of time with my professional crush), and a ridgetop break from the won’t-quit grey skies and a chance to soak up a sky full of stars and the crescent moon, shockingly bright above the hills. Makes today’s return to cold grey drizzle much more bearable, to know that all that beauty is still up there, sailing above us.

How lovely to see the stars and moon! It’s been very cloudy here lately, even rained yesterday morning, but it cleared a bit in the late afternoon and it was cheering to see a bit of reflected sun and blue sky near sunset.
It’s been downright Pacific Northwesty around here lately, and a lot of days with eyebrow-dampening tule fog that doesn’t lift all day, so it feels like a particularly squashing sort of grey. But seeing that scintillating sky from the top of the highest ridge in the landscape was just magical!

Le Lion is rapidly becoming one of my Little Black Dress perfumes — it suits most moods, most days, most outfits, most weather, and I feel pulled together in it without it feeling too cool or abstract or aloof on days when I want something with some snuggle and sexiness.
Yay for a “LBD” type of perfume! And Double Yay for seeing the moon and stars after a long period of yuck and grey. ?⭐??
I’ve been in an irritable kind of mood lately where all the music in my collection feels tired and all the perfume in my collection feels too pushy. The LBD perfumes (come to think of it, my other main one is Shalimar, which bears a big old resemblance to Le Lion) are the ones that somehow make me feel both elegant and comfy. Sometimes it can be so challenging to fit fragrance into my emotional landscape — it’s such an emotional thing in itself!
Akro Awake (Does Emily have a poem about coffee?) Trying to be super efficient at work as we are leaving early afternoon for a short trip to the islands. Mostly packed!

I am enjoying it – possibly the best coffee fragrance I’ve tried. I will say that although they talk about it being dark and bitter, I find it on the sweeter side. LuckyScent’s description is right on.

Wearing Ormonde Woman today, after finally thunking my sample of Vetiver Tonka over the past couple of days. I feel very excited that I’ve met my perfume goals for the year–use up 12 samples (roughly one per month), as well as a few larger decants and bottles that were close to empty. Now it’s time to take stock and see what the use-ups will be for next year.
The thing about thunking though, is that I want to enjoy what I’m wearing and not just get through it. Is your goal working for you? (not trying to say this should not be your goal, I’m just interested in how this works out in reality for you.)
The goal is totally working out! In the past, I’ve used up way more than 12 samples in a year. But I chose 12 for this year because it seemed like a manageable way to a) work through some of the sample pile, b) still get to wear other things, and c) would be easily attainable based on what I had that was already half used, etc.
I’ve definitely been enjoying stuff and not just powering though it. But especially for 1-2mL samples, there’s not that many wears in them, and I don’t want them to go off. They seem like good things to focus on. Vetiver Tonka happened to be a much larger than usual sample (4 whole mL), so I got to wear it a lot, which is good, because I really like it. Not sure if I need to buy it, given the number of other vetiver scents I still have…

I’m thinking I’ll be in Sundowner again today because yesterday I roamed into the civilized world and was testing perfumes in a Sephora in the “big city.” I enjoyed Sundowner until it got lost in all that testing.
I also think I need more than 3 swipes from my mini. It seems like this one would really be better served by spraying.
I enjoyed the opening tobacco. In the middle I smelled some florals, but the note pyramid is completely lacking anything in the floral category? My nose must be wonky, and of course unrefined. I admire those people who can say with any type of certainty “That’s Iris! That’s rose! That’s tuberose!” If it’s not the dominant note, I can never tell. It’s basically “Me likey, me no likey.”
Anywho, Happy Humpday! It’s quite grey and dreary here. The skies are hanging low and getting snagged in the black bones of tree limbs. The ground is so wet it squishes when you walk on it and there’s standing water everywhere. Wish I could direct some of this water to parched areas in desperate need.
As for ED, I’m a mediocre fan of her poetry, but a big fan of her sense of self, her delightfully curious and observational mind, her lack of ego, and her connection to the natural world.
Weirdly, we’re a parched area in desperate need and also everything is wet and squishy. Such is the architecture of a major drought. Thanks for these notes on Sundowner! So far, it’s sounding good and something that would fall in my “me likey” category; alas, paying the heating bill will have to take precedence over any more perfume purchases until spring.
All I can say is don’t trust MY nose. Go with those who are much more learned in the world of perfumery than myself!
Also, the 5ml are pretty affordable and a good way to find out if you’re going to need a “large sample,” as hajusuuri puts it. I also got a mini of Au Coeur Du Desert and it’s stunning, IMO. Might need a large sample ?
I love both Sundowner and Au Coeur du Désert. Sundowner needs to be sprayed I think.
Totally agree. I have a couple tobacco centric perfumes (tabac aurea and Kalemat) so don’t think I need a large sample of Sundowner. Au Coeur is another story…?

I started the day in Tobacco Vanille layered with Serge Lutens Gris Clair but tonight I’m in Histoire d’Eau, I wish Christine Nagel had created something this successful at Hermes.
I am wishing she would do one of the Jardins or Merveilles that I would like. I did like the Hermessences.

But, but, I always feel so elegant when I wear Shalimar! Are people looking down their noses at me and muttering, “That filthy vanilla hussy…”?
I should wear it more often — vintage Shalimar parfum is one of the few things I have a back-up-bottle of, and it spends entirely too much time sitting on a dark shelf like the good china.
I have an extrait de parfum that I got around 12 years ago. It’s glorious but hardly clean. Lived in elegance, I guess

CP compliant in a sample of JM White Moss & Snowdrop. It smells cold and bitter in a good way, and later warms up a little with tonka and a hint of cardamom.
Had the F&M Earl Gray and Sicilian Lemon & Ginger tea from the advent calendar last night. Their EG is good, no surprise there. The SL&G was a big hit with me, and mom & sister who also have this advent calendar. It is the right amount of tart and spicy, with other flavors going on in the background to elevate it above a homemade cup of hot water with slices of lemon and ginger. That one is going on the list for a full tin.
A good lemon tea is definitely noteworthy. ?

Hello everyone. I started the day in Kelly Calèche, forgot about it and added Youth Dew, then tried Le Lion on the way home from the cinema so I am reeking splendour tonight. It is now definitely something I want a bottle of ? The film was The Power of the Dog, matinee screening on a rare half day from work. I found myself weirdly resistant to everything about it for the first half an hour, but by some later stage was completely gripped. It was just brilliant. I am so glad I had a chance to see it on the big screen! Thanks to everyone who reviewed it here and encouraged me ?

I had an early visit from Santa in the form of a sample set of Amouage perfumes (from me to me), and today I’m wearing Dia Woman. It’s really heavy aldehydes at first and then rose/peony/heliotrope and sandalwood. ED would surely like the flower garden notes in this!

Not really. It was about the same temp as yesterday… “properly December-ish”, according to one of the local weather guys/gals. There’s one more day like that for this week, and then the temps start going up again. It might hit 70 (!?!) here on Saturday, which is completely nuts!

SotD Estee Lauder Tender Light, the first one listed on the description folder that came with my set of minis of the new “Luxury Fragrances.” As others have noticed the names are very generic and I had to think to remember it. So far it seems very plain and soapy but as it is likeable, I can be impressed with its heft. When looking it up I remembered the fragrance by Margaretha Ley called “Tender Light,” a dialed-down version of her original eponymous perfume. Speaking of which, I voted for ML in the Fragrantica Reader’s Choice poll which I enjoy. The other four I submitted (for best Woman’s Perfume) were Estee, Timeless, Je Reviens, and Mahora. There were many others I’d consider “Best” but they were already listed and got my votes. Of course there is only one “best,” but as I understand that supposedly emerges from the game of the poll. In all the years I’ve been a nurse, I only reported one co-worker. She was so mean to patients, I went to management (and I never go to management for ANYTHING! I avoid the Dark Side like the plague!), and they completely blew me off. Then a family member complained, which had management stepping quick to look through camera footage. After that she was told if she didn’t resign, she’d be fired. These are the people you worry about coming back to exact “revenge!” ?
Oh boy but it sounds like a good decision was made.
