Tuesday scent of the day 11/9

Posted by Robin on 9 November 2021 266 Comments

It's Tuesday, plus World Freedom Day and Chaos Never Dies Day. (And, less weighty but possibly important to someone: National Scrapple Day.) Birthdays: Ivan Turgenev, Dorothy Dandridge, Robert Frank, Carl Sagan and Mary Travers. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Maison Margiela Matcha Meditation. Tea at the moment is Upton Dikom Estate + Upton Yunnan Golden Monkey + organic cacao husks + a few little chips of cinnamon bark + a splash of milk. (I am liking my tea more than I'm liking my fragrance.)

Reminder: on 11/12 we're doing Dealer's Choice, edition 5...propose a theme for a Friday community project, and wear a fragrance that fits your theme.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Pols Potten Grandpa Teacups are €140 for the set of 4 at Made in Design.

I’m in Shalimar MVP for a day of running errands. Tea is Stash Chai Spice.
This time change is really messing with my sleep.? When I got done with work yesterday it was already dark and the moon was a sliver in the sky. I am training for my new job all the way on the other end of town, which means a 15 mile commute. Traffic isn’t bad in the morning, but it’s horrible in the afternoon. I’ve been spoiled for the last 15 years with less than a 2 mile commute.

And it is my day for NOT running errands, or going anywhere…it is chore day. I think I’d rather do errands?

But YES, same, sleep totally crap last two nights, fingers crossed for both of us tonight.

Yeah, I’d definitely rather do errands. Although I do love doing laundry.

When I go back into the office it will be a 15th mile commute. I don’t know how I’ll react after being home so long.

I hear you, fought a similar commute for 21 years. Took 30 minutes to get there in the morning and 90 minutes to get home. Never could figure out why the trip home was so much worse.

Right?! Aren’t all those same people going to work in the morning??‍♀️ Anyway, I’ll be back to a 3 mile commute after thanksgiving. Glad this is not permanent.

Wearing Hermes Ambre Narguile and drinking my second cup of coffee with a dash of turmeric.

Beautiful warm, sunny Fall day. We will be in the mid 60’s until Friday, which I welcome eagerly.

Could anyone please recommend me a nice chocolate body wash or shower gel that is currently available in the market? I am trying to make a chocolate gift set of body products for a friend’s holiday present. She is a chocaholic and always looking for any chocolate items. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Happy and healthy Tuesday, everyone! ?

I’m conducting further testing of Hindu Kush this morning. It’s a really lovely incense and might be a defense against Chaos Never Dies Day, but as it’s progressing this time there’s a smidge too much vanilla … which isn’t even one of its notes. I think it must be my nose, or maybe it’s the nutmeg that IS one of its notes, but clearly I need to fully tink the sample vial before ordering more … just in case.

Lol at least your cuff was vanilla. I was watching TV last night and just could NOT figure out why I kept smelling onions. I had cooked with them but knew I had washed my hands, yet I got up and washed them again. It was driving me insane. Finally I realized it was the cuff of my shirt haha. Must had sat my arm down in onions at some point.

SOTD is Tonka Imperiale, from the splitmeet, after dousing myself with it all weekend. Making myself feel better after a……so-so at-home hair dye incident. It’s not tragic, just darker than I wanted.

Went to see Spencer, which I really liked. More gothic tragedy/ghost story than it is a biopic, which I’m all for.

Joining you in home spontaneous hairdressing- chopped 2 cm of my hair in the bathroom sink. Not perfect but going to have my hair cut is so stressful (even before pandemic) that it’s overall worth it.

SOTD is Love Don’t be Shy, and my goodness is it ever sweet! I knew it would be, but I still don’t think I was prepared. It won’t be a lasting love, but I don’t hate it, and it’s fun to try things that are out of my comfort zone.

It’s a terribly busy week as I conquer another mountain of grading, but I will be rewarded with a weekend away with my husband (and without my kid!) when I make it through, so I’ve got my eye on the prize.

SOTD is Guerlain AA Granada Salvia, happy pomegranate. It’s a drippy dreary day out, but I’m glad to see the rain.

I’ll be back to excavating our attic soon. Thankfully it’s a small attic. And apparently we have mainly used it for carefully storing the empty boxes and packaging for our long-departed tech stuff. So far I’ve found 4 empty printer boxes, 3 empty phone boxes, 3 empty DVD player boxes, and innumerable other empty boxes for computer and stereo equipment. One of the boxes proudly stated that its former contents were “Y2K Ready!” Yeah, glad we saved all this important stuff this long.

?So true. A couple of years ago we cleaned out the basement. Like you we had empty tech boxes, a plastic bin of charger cords that didn’t match anything, a binder of warranties and instruction books for long gone items. And my favorite, a box full of vcr tapes of recorded tv shows. Not even GOOD ones! Just random crap like St Elsewhere.

You could have matched your boxes to the 4 dead printers, 3 since-upgraded phones, 3 outmoded monitors, half-dozen keyboards and CPUs, and approximately 342 useless chargers and associated peripherals I cleaned out of my sister’s basement a couple of years ago. At least you just had boxes – they’re easy to recycle andbno one’s going to argue with you getting rid of them!

Yeah I dumped off 2 boxes of e-waste at Goodwill last week. DSL filters, modems, remotes, ack.

The annoying part is going to be getting rid of all the styrofoam inside those empty boxes. There’s only one place in my county that takes it, and it’s a goodly drive. Well I am sure going to have my SUV packed to the roof with styrofoam when I go.

Here in Portland there is a service called Free Geek (no affiliation) that recycles or refurbishes donated computer equipment. They do disk wiping as part of their intake process, but they also suggest something called DBAN (dban.org) for those who want to do the wiping themselves before donating. Maybe helpful?

I’m in an oudy but a goody! (Like what I did there ;-) )

Actually in two. Doing a smackdown wrist to wrist competition/comparison between Bois Sacre Sandalo by Arte Profumi (on the left) and Laudano Nero by Tiziana Terenzi (on the right, of course). The good news is that I still love them both as I have full bottles of both.

Although they seemed to have a lot in common when I first applied them, over the course of the last hour they have completely diverged.

Both have amber-y bases, but the Laudano Nero goes to almost incense–a wood incense, while Bois Sacre goes to floral. I can’t get even the tiniest whiff of oud anymore from the Bois Sacre–but that may be in comparison with the Laudano Nero? Anyway, neither is an oud bomb in the least, although I caught the oud notes when I first applied them. Anyway, I smell amazing, and warm, and amber-y on this rainy damp day (but hallelujah for the rain!!!).

It’s a Dutch brand. I am pretty sure potten means pots. But it does sound similar to mass murderer. Is that what you were thinking?

I was just going to confirm this. Also Potten is plural of pots in Dutch and “potten en pannen” (=pots and pans) is kind of a fixed combination and this is just some sort of wordplay on that.

The brand name raised my eyebrows a bit too. Translated from Dutch or Danish it (allegedly) is “wrist pot” or “pulse pot”, neither of which evokes much for me. Reminds me of the old story about how the Chevy Nova didn’t sell in Mexico since “no va” translates roughly to “won’t go”.

Can everyone send good vibes and prayers our way for Nacho? I’m he has injured his back- he has what they believe is a herniated disc. He’s obviously in pain and his back legs are weak. He can walk but you can tell it’s painful. He’s not himself he’s in so much pain…trembling. I can hardly work thinking about it. He’s on pain meds, anti-inflammatories, and muscle relaxers. If it doesn’t seem to improve within a couple of days we will have to do an MRI or CT scan. Just worried sick about my little guy. ?

    Shalimar for warm comfort today.

      My girl hurt herself yesterday.
I put a gate up to limit the floor to the carpet. I just carried her as much as possible and let her try walking a little. Do you have a sweater or outfit for Nacho? Even if it is warm, Nacho might need it. Also, my friend who normally takes care of my girl, said to make a sling with a t shirt if she has trouble holding herself up going to the bathroom.
Hope Nacho gets better each day. And, you, too.?

I’m in Shalimar MVP today for the WIN! It’s just perfect. I wore it to bed last night and refreshed this morning. It’s a gentle, soothing, and calming type of vanilla. Very smooth and understated, but unmistakably Shalimar. So glad I was able to get a bottle because I see this as becoming a staple.

Also, was whizzing around on-line last night to see if I could possibly find a BUB, but the only availability I saw was on the bay starting at $250 and going up to $399. So, nope, no BUB for me!

I’m drinking strong coffee out of an insulated tumbler but the teacup photo is charming! ☕️

MVP is gorgeous! I’m loving it so much that I got a back up bottle. Once the Shalimar tinged vanilla has faded the dry down is amazingly resinous and long lasting- a benzoin vanilla cloud.

I’m just now trying out some meditation/calming apps, primarily to aid in sleep. But some of them might be good for anxiety as well. It’s too early for me to recommend anything in particular, but perhaps others can. I do know it’s good for the system to slow down and take time out to breathe and relax.

See a professional. You deserve to be at peace with yourself and the world around you. Finding the source of your anxiety is the key. If it’s extrinsic, learning effective coping skills can help. If it’s intrinsic, you may need medication. That doesn’t mean you have to be on it for life. It means you need it to help you over this speed bump that’s in the way of becoming calm and rooted in your own being. Everyone could benefit from therapy, IMO. I know it helped me.

Excellent! The first step is the hardest. If you find yourself overwhelmed, try finding a quiet spot and sit. Listen to you own mind like you’re eavesdropping. “See”
the anxiety, don’t try to “fix it,” just watch it and see it surge and withdraw, like waves. Don’t get attached to it, just watch it objectively and know you are safe and will be fine. We’re all rooting for you! ✌?

This may sound stupid and childlike, but I had a period of months of intense anxiety in the past that would almost disable me. This helped me understand that anxiety couldn’t hurt me and couldn’t control me. It came and it went. Just like joy, love, and happiness. It’s all temporary. I learned to “surf” my emotions rather than dive in and drown in them. ??‍♀️
I’m glad you felt safe enough here to share your struggles.

I think just admitting to yourself that the last 3 years has been difficult and not feeling guilty about it can be helpful. Sometimes we are on automatic pilot to get through tough times and don’t acknowledge how tough until we are burnt out.
I think it’s a good idea to start a plan with all you will have going on in the spring. Just a thought, but if your so inclined, maybe take a real estate class so you will be better prepared in case some agent starts to get pushy with you? ( sorry, I am on break and not sure if my thoughts are translating well)
I will pray for you too?

Thank you lillyjo. I learned my lesson about real estate agents this past year, they won’t get me again. My deeper problem is having lost confidence in myself after making some big mistakes, and thus not trusting my ability to make good decisions going forward. I feel like I don’t even know what I want any more. Everything is so complicated, any decision I make has so many logistical issues and ramifications that I feel paralyzed.

I think others here have great suggestions, but my one thought is to add in time outside every day, no matter the weather. Notice what you see and hear and feel and smell and taste, and just breathe in the outside air. Many studies have shown that nature has a positive effect on mental health and emotional well-being.

      I’ll be thinking of you.

Everyone has such good suggestions. I would second springpansy and say that getting outside, especially when it’s sunny can do wonders. And then the old adage “one day at a time” Our society is so fast paced I think it adds to everyone’s stress levels. We find ourselves worrying about, what about tomorrow? And next month? And next year? But if you can truly focus on the present day, I think it may help. I will be thinking of you!

Also seconding Deva’s advice to talk to a professional- beyond just medication. Just to reflect on what is creating the anguish and consciously break the cycle of negative thoughts is very powerful. Cognitive psychotherapy really helped me in dark moments of my life. And it may be silly, but pets are a big source of comfort! They love unconditionally.

All very good suggestions. I don’t have much else to add. When I’ve felt overwhelmed I’ve had to remind myself to slow down my breathing, or just to remember to breathe. I know there’s more to it, but it does seem to help with calming myself down. Journaling or writing down your thoughts and feelings may help with processing some things.

      Sending you hugs!

Thank you. I walk out to the lookout point to watch the sun set over the ocean every night with the dog, it’s my favorite thing to do. And I’m taking some online classes. I actually have too much time to myself – I need to get out and socialize more, but I’ve become such a hermit in the past year and a half. The pandemic has really exacerbated my introverted tendencies.

I am not always good about meditation, but will highly recommend Susan Salzberg’s Loving Kindness Meditation — she has a book, there are youtube videos for it, plus I think you can find her on podcasts, so you can get to it many different ways.

My sister had told me about it but I ignored her, then I found it on the 10% Happier app and tried it, and it really did help me.

Whatever you do, we are all rooting for you. Life is hard.

I try to forgive others and especially myself…easier said than done…we all tend to be our toughest critics…myself included. Appreciate your honesty and post…the past couple years have been very tough and I can relate.

SOTD = Killian Love, don’t be shy Extreme

Love this one but hoping it will fade by the time I go for my COVID booster later. Wish me luck as it is a workday tomorrow and I hope any side effects will be mild.

Good news, but I won’t whisper it, my sister and BIL tested negative for COVID-19. Yay!

In other news, I was impacted by the Xfinity/Comcast outage this morning. I’m sure I had nothing to do with it but I randomly pressed buttons on my router (no clue what they do but it felt good to be doing something). All back to normal except I am signed in to a server that does not provide the best experience.

Omg! I love the “randomly pressed buttons” dealio! You have no idea how often this happens in medicine because every single thing alarms- vents, beds, iv pumps, monitors, call lights, BiPaps, computers, bathrooms, doors, ad nauseum! Keep hitting those buttons until things start working and shut the hel* up! ?

BTW, we are booster twins because I’m getting mine this evening as well. ?

Tam Dao for a busy, windy, stormy day here in the PNW. I do love Tam Dao’s meditative “temple” connotations (that’s not exactly the right word, but you know what I mean). It’s not very long lasting on me, however, and I usually don’t have a problem with lasting power for fragrances.

TSC Bois d’Iris today. I usually wear it on cold/grey/rainy days. Today is sunny and unseasonably warm (close to 70F), and I am enjoying the scent very much.

Nice to see Turgenev in the birthday list. His novellas were the first “real”literature that I read in Russian. I used to love teaching Fathers and Children (Fathers and Sons) in my lit courses (in translation), but my students now have great difficulty engaging with the measured pace of his work.

Turgenev is one of my very favourite writers. And his novels are so short… I could never get my students to read anything long when I was teaching (I set Middlemarch one year, almost as a protest). I’ve read Spring Torrents most recently, oh his works are so beautiful, and like Chekhov, sometimes I think he’s almost laughing, if only I could catch the right tone…

Just scrubbed off Atelier Cologne Lemon Island. Messed about with it for a couple hours, but finally decided life is too short to barely tolerate a perfume. If it’s not good, scrub it off. I periodically get a reminder of this rule, and I guess I was due for a refresher. Into the purgatory box it goes (if it’s lucky). Apologies to any fans!

As soon as I’m sure I’m clear of the AC, I will dig about for something else.

In Vanille Galante on this cloudy day. I haven’t read anyone’s comments yet; I just needed to post to say that I LOVE SCRAPPLE SO MUCH OMG. I lived in PA (outside of Philly) from the ages of 5 – 12, and my father inculcated in me a deep love of Scrapple. (My mother thinks it’s vile, but she barely likes any meat at all, so.) Lest you think I’ve grown out of my love for the stuff, I had a friend who moved to PA bring me some Scrapple when he visited me in CA a few years ago, and I STILL LOVE IT. I’m trying to get him to bring me some more this year. Anyway, Happy National Scrapple Day to everyone; this is a very important day to me, now that I know of its existence.

A town very near me claims to be the birthplace of scrapple, although probably they are not the only town to lay claim to the title.

But they did also serve scrapple in Maryland where I grew up, in diners at least.

Hello everyone, cheering myself up after a very long and silly work day-yes, it was just silly-by reading here. I put on a ton of Madame Rochas at lunchtime: recent bottle, heavily discounted-it smells soapy, floral and old fashioned (I don’t means that pejoratively of course) and maybe reminds me of things like White Diamonds…anyway, it is not silly, and the bottle is delightful to look at, like something from a dear aunt’s dressing table, so that cheered me too.

I came down to London for a medical appointment tomorrow morning which I’m not looking forward to at all- but on the flip side spent some time perfume sniffing and fluttering around the many perfume counters at Selfridges before they closed. I was glad to see they now have a dedicated stand for L’Artisan and I could finally sniff things like mure et musc or Zongkha after years of wondering how they may smell.

I sprayed Mon Guerlain in passing through the Guerlain counter (they are still selling a few bottles of the discontinued perfumes of Les Parisiennes) and discovered I now definitely enjoy it! Weird how nose and tastes change- I used to find it screechy.

I actually bought my bottle of Dzongkha from Selfridges (online) because I couldn’t find a bottle in the U.S.. Even though the shipping was expensive, I wasn’t charged tax and the total cost was comparable to buying it here. Plus, it came in a cool Selfridges box :)
