Happy Monday! It's also Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the US and Thanksgiving in Canada. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm giving Frédéric Malle Synthetic Jungle a shot.
Reminder: 10/15 is Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse's birthday. Wear a perfume for Jeeves OR Wooster. If you have never seen or read anything about Jeeves and Wooster, pick a favorite comic character from any medium, and scent that character.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Already one meeting down while its still dark out. ughhhhg.
post shower Ambre Cashmere for a chilly day in SoCal.
You smell nice! Fall is definitely here, it’s 57 degrees in Millbrae.
thank you! about 58 here in Palos Verdes.
64 in San Diego
I’m from Palos Verdes!!!
hi neighbor!!
Feel I need to chime in with weather on the bay–at 61 in Oakland.
We don’t really celebrate Thanksgiving — which is to say we don’t do up the big dinner with turkey and all that — but I am wearing a couple of drops of vintage Parfum d’Hermès, which I think after decades of rumination is probably my favourite scent of all time, and I am thankful that I have it, and the luxury of being able to wear it and write about it, and the health to enjoy it. So I guess that’s my form of thanksgiving.
All of which are good reasons to give thanks. Enjoy the day your way.
All good reason to give thanks! I’m not fond of turkey, just give me a double dose of stuffing and mashed potatoes with gravy and I’m happy as a clam.
Same here!
+1 for stuffing!! Yum!
I am 100% team stuffing.
Checking in for team pumpkin flan, which is the only part of Thanksgiving I really care about anymore.
Joining you on team pumpkin flan!
OH! Flan? YUM!
Oh, my vote goes to classic green bean casserole!
I’d be all over pumpkin flan, but I’d be the only one eating it.
Jalapeño, I’m thinking there’s a really good idea in there somewhere…….
Maybe I should look around for an individual sized flan just for me…
It’s even better the next day, plus it has enough eggs that it qualifies for breakfast.
I’m with you except team turkey too as I want turkey and cranberry sandwiches the next day (and the next and the next.)
I do love a nice turkey sandwich. A dear friend makes this killer home made cranberry relish with hot peppers that is to die for. I eat turkey just for the relish topping.
That sounds divine! We’re having Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant this year, so no leftovers or day-after sandwiches. Did not have a traditional Thanksgiving dinner last year, or the year before that, or the year before that. So I’ll just have to keep fantasizing about turkey relish sandwiches ?
?? for stuffing!
I’m in Fille en Aiguilles, from a decant. Love!
Yay.
Smelling great!
SOTD is Bulgari Eau au Thé Noir.
Up early for the six-hour sprint to the border before our COVID tests expire. We found a nail in one of our tires last night — good thing we found it then, not while driving today!
Like Pyramus, we also don’t really celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving, mostly because we come to my dad’s house in the States to go out to farms, etc. most Thanksgiving weekends and he usually comes up for US Thanksgiving. This year, I’m just thankful to be able to visit family.
Good luck for your return trip!
Good thing you found that nail! Have a safe drive.
Hope you get there in time, good luck!
Safe travels!
Yay for finding the nail before it was a problem!
Good luck with your crossing and hope your trip went well.
Yikes on finding a nail in a tire! Hopefully that will be the worst thing to happen on your return trip. Safe travels!
Wearing Lancome Idole from a sample and… I.Want.A.Bottle.
I liked my sample, too but it did not turn into a want. I was not a fan of that tippy bottle design. But then I love the Tocade bottle….
Wait for holiday specials on that one.
Good morning all, my SOTD is vintage Chanel Coco EdP. Cool and windy today, something spicy with amber is just the ticket.
Currently reading Season of the Dragonflies by Sarah Creech. A love story set in the Blue Ridge Mountains about a family of women perfumers whose signature fragrances enable the success (or not) of movie stars, politicians, artists, and CEOs. Very enjoyable but I was up a little too late last night reading…. Yaaaaawn.
Coffee consumed and I’m headed out for a three mile walk.
I was up way too late reading too!! Then got up at my usual time, so now I am dragging.
P.S. thanks for walking for both of us
Sure! You’re welcome! I may do a short yoga practice at lunch.
Great. Do a few biceps curls while you’re at it, ok?
Sounds like a fun book.
I am enjoying it thoroughly, am so glad I clicked on it!
SOTD is OJ Ambre Royal, which is closer to Skien than the last several Alien flankers, so of course, I like it.
I missed the reading poll this weekend but the last great things I read are Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy and Bunny by Mona Awad.
Sampled 19-69 Rainbow Bar last night, thanks to the generosity of our own lillyjo. It’s happy and a bit fruity and I liked it a lot, and it reminds me of something else that I just can’t quite bring to mind. Anyone have any ideas?
Meanwhile, commando so far this morning but am considering getting out the OJ discovery set and spritzing Champaca on … if there’s any left in that vial. It’s a lovely and sunny but chilly morning here, and I have to go out and retrieve a soaker hose from the deep backyard and dig up a veritable forest of various mushrooms that sprang up out there in the last week. It looks like fairies held a symposium or something.
Hehehehehe… fairy symposium!
There were at least four different varieties out there — filled my little garden trug twice! Our next door neighbor has a small dog, and even though our yards are separated by fencing I felt it might be dangerous to leave all those shrooms where a dog could get at them so I dug up all that I could without hurting myself. Oh, and an aside: as I was typing the above, my ipad suggested this ? for “fencing”. No perfume bottle yet, but fencing gets an emoji. Hmphf!
Kinda surprised that fencing (sport) gets an emoji.
Robin, it didn’t take you long at all to try Synthetic Jungle! I’ll be curious to know your thoughts. I am enjoying my sample but not reaching for my wallet.
Speaking of samples, I had a Luckyscent sample order arrive on Friday, so I’ve been playing with them all weekend. So far, my favorite new discovery is Indochine, which I wouldn’t have tried if it weren’t for the NST readers who love it. Goodness, what a beautiful but interesting scent!
Seriously, that was fast considering how many things I never manage to try at all. A very kind reader sent me a surprise package.
I would say ditto: terrifically well done (I do think Flipo is a great perfumer), interesting, great fit with the name. Love how bold it is — it feels modern but doesn’t feel like they bowed to mass preferences for clean and mild, office-friendly etc. But don’t feel any compulsion to own it at all. So far
Agreed! I also think it’s very well done, and I love the stage where I get lots of hyacinth. And even though it’s not “green dumbed down”, I get perfectly comfortable in it at work, which is more than I can say for some modern greens, like Dryad, for instance.
FM Iris Poudre today — from my new travel spray. I’ve always loved this, but thought maybe I didn’t quite live up to its standards. Now I think, heck yes, I do!
The question is: Does it live up to yours? You definitely smell fabulous!
Ha and yes, it does. Thx.
I love this one. You smell gorgeous!
It’s taken me a while, but I have come to the conclusion that there is an iris perfume for everyone. You’ve picked a beaut!
Grey and cool here this morning, going to wear Ambre Narguilé.
Ah, I should pull mine out. It’s not generally one I get cravings for outside of October.
You smell cozy and autumnal! ?
Wearing a dab of Deneuve today. In 6 days I will be on my final vacation for the year and soon enough I will be needing to schedule next year’s vacations.
Ohhh, marvelous! Deneuve is fantastic stuff. I also loved Uninhibited by Cher. Another underrated celeb scent.
Commando today – we had to take our dog in for emergency surgery last night and I don’t feel like perfume. I am extremely thankful for 24 hour vets – we thought she had somehow poisoned herself but it turned out she had bloat. If we’d had to wait until normal business hours we probably would have lost her. As it is, she’s resting well in the ICU and apparently ate really well this morning.
All best wishes for an uneventful convalescence for your dog, you must be relieved and hope you can now rest.
I too have been thankful for 24 vet hospitals in my day! I am glad your pup is doing so much better.
Oh, my — thank goodness. Our nearest emergency vet (since our former vet, who would take emergency calls from regular clients, retired) is an hour away. I worry about what will happen if we urgently need night or weekend care for our kitty. I am GLAD that your dog got care!
I’m so glad you caught it and were able to get her treatment in time. I’m am forever thankful to our 24 hour/emergency vet for the care one of our cats got during a harrowing medical event, and the ongoing cancer care one of their specialists gives to our other cat.
So glad you got her to the vet in time!
So sorry to hear about your dog. Wishing her a speedy recovery!
Oh no! Poor pup! Thank goodness for 24-hour vets!
I wanted to adopt a Borzoi but read somewhere they have problems with bloat and reconsidered.
They are beautiful goofs though.
Emergency vets are wonderful…so glad they were able to help your dog and she’s going better! Big hugs to you and her.
Glad your pup is doing well and hopefully will be home soon – our 24 hour vet is an hour away and we did have a scary ride once years ago with our kitty.
Glad to hear that your dog made it to an emergency vet in time! Best wishes for speedy healing.
Best recovery wishes to your Dog!
Monday!
1) SOTD: LM Creme Brulee. Perfect for this chilly and damp morning- we got hail yesterday in Portland!
2) This afternoon will be making pumpkin bread with pepitas and making a big pot of turkey/veg/potato soup- all gifts from various Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Squash, chocolate, vanilla, potatoes, squash, quinoa and so much more due to skill of ancient Indigenous peoples.
Good luck with the cooking, it all sounds delicious.
You had me at squash…and then again at vanilla!
Love everything on your list.
Sounds yummy! Enjoy!
The house smells so cozy!
I was wearing the tropical Molton Brown Mahina today, this evening vintage Loulou.
LouLou had one of the all time great bottles, especially in the parfum.
Ah yes, I have an adorable mini of it, like a magic lamp.
Vintage Loulou… swoon!
You know, vintage Loulou is very affordable and stays very pristine ?, I got a lot of incense and a fruity aspect today.
It’s Caligna season here — warm blue-and-golden days, dry air, the chaparral fragrant in its water-stressed, concentrated state, all the fig trees blooming out their milky-coconut scent. So, well Caligna’d, off I go to inspect a riparian restoration project, with — I must say — *way* too good of hair today to waste it on a handful of contractors and a cattle pasture.
Lol! Why don’t good hair days happen when we need them? I love your description of the climate there – sounds heavenly.
The good hair moments (face it; they’re never full days) almost always happen right before bed on work nights, and I always think, “I should go out dancing! Oh, well, guess I’ll go floss…”
Hey, flossing is important! My dental hygienist would be the first person to say that…
My dental hygiene brings all the boys to the yard.
??!
Doing site work with great hair and fragrant chaparral and fig trees wafting all around sounds amazing! I’m sure you get more cruddy weather weather days on-site than good ones, so I hope you get to enjoy this one.
It was pretty lovely out there! Although, this particular site always reminds me of the time that I went out there and unknowingly brought home a scorpion in my pant leg…
I have the day off, mostly. Have to make some final edits on a very fluffy article about preventing infections–for my moonlighting work– and then I am done baby done. I’m in vintage Sous le Vent, sent to me by a generous NSTer–but now I forget who. Have vague plans to switch out my hot weather perfumes for my winter heavy hitters, or maybe watch a movie while I go for a ride on our stationary bike, or go for a walk, or or or. . . the world is my oyster this cool, bright Monday.
If you need a laugh, just noticed TCM’s showing Arsenic & Old Lace this afternoon (5pm Central).
Wonderful movie!
I may watch it later…
Or for noir, D.O.A. (1949) at 3p Pacific on TCM West.
I’m set to watch Arsenic & Old Lace – thanks for the tip, galbanumgal!
Haven’t watched that one in years. Cary Grant and Frank Capra—a match made in heaven.
Just got back from a wonderful three-day workshop and am feeling very tired today. Had hoped to get out for a hike or to play tennis (that is, attempt to hit balls over the net — we are beginners) with my husband, but don’t have much energy. It is sunny and breezy and just beautiful today, and I am sorry not to be enjoying the day more actively.
Commando as yet but am feeling like something warm and sweet.
Traveling, and not sleeping in one’s own bed can be very tiring. Hope you’re feeling more energetic tomorrow.
We’ve woken to a sunny and still morning, after a wild night of wind and rain – lovely!
I’ve woken in a sudden mood for Caron’s Parfum Sacré, so no thinking needed.
I love that kind of weather
Back in Tam Dao after wearing cozy Ambra Etro yesterday. Tam Dao is quickly becoming my “get sh*t done” perfume! Might reapply before I make some business calls this afternoon.
Ha! I love it. Tam Dao is so great, it’s my go to for traveling.
That makes sense! It’s long lasting but not overwhelming!
Everyone needs a “getting ? done” perfume!
For sure!
Today’s picture is gorgeous – both the statue and the photo itself!
I’m sampling another batch of D.S. Durga today, so I am very fragrant with Coriander and Italian Citrus on the elbow and wrist of one arm, and White Peacock Lily on the other wrist. All three are quite nice.
The Coriander leans into the somewhat woody aspect of coriander, which is unexpected and makes for a lovely way to wear a note that can sometimes be sharp or even acrid. Ironically, though, I am looking for a coriander frag that leans into the sharpness bc I’m weird.
With Italian Citrus I get mostly orange-colored citrus, not so much lemons or grapefruit or chinotto. Peel, pith, and pulp, so the sweetness and bitterness are balanced.
WPL is a a true garden lily to my nose. I get some whipped cream, violet, and ambrette as well. I don’t know that I could distinguish the nerium oleander or cabreuva that are listed as top notes, but I’m definitely not getting grapefruit, so I think maybe the three top notes were not particularly strong on me.
Drinking chocolate puer again. I think I’ve made enough of a dent in my mountain of English Breakfast tea bags that I can start enjoying some of my other teas again.
It’s from the square in London where Bertie Wooster lived. I think.
In Burberry Brit Rhythm for Her. I had not reached for my bottle in a long time and I had forgotten how lovely it is.
Busy morning running errands and now in the task of organizing one of my closest and putting many things away for donation.
Beautiful sunny, breezy day in the lower 70’s. Planning to take a walk in the park later this afternoon to keep enjoying the weather.
Happy Monday! ?
Envious of your sunny weather! But I am glad that you were able to get outside and enjoy it. Gloomy fall weather is close at hand.
It has been cloudy and gloomy for many days here. We were lucky to have a very sunny afternoon. Back to cloudy days tomorrow ?
Beautiful weather everywhere today it seems. 72 with cloud billows in Hollywood. Wearing Ambre Narguile today, not all together happily. Cinnamon notes wafting so heavy, I’m reminded of those heavily scented witch broom Halloween decorations. Often with AN, I barely notice the cinnamon. Maybe I’m hungry?
Cool, rainy, windy and overcast where I am, so I guess that makes me the odd one out of the beautiful fall weather group ?
Hope your AN whips itself back into shape stat. Smelling like the Halloween aisle at Michael’s does not sound fun.
You and I are weather twins today.
Hey nice to see you! It’s been awhile.
It’s a cold, sunny day here and I will go out to enjoy it in a bit. I’m wearing Josef Statkus, reading “Billy Summers.”
Oh, you smell marvelous! Never see that one anymore.
2nd that.
Tired from having to accompany my husband to the airport this morning (he’s blind and doesn’t know the Denver airport yet so I had to get him to the check-in counter). Sampling DSH Amber Bleu which is a lovely fall scent.
Hope he has a good trip and you get a good night’s sleep!
We’ve been experiencing transitional weather here for the past few days, which has left me in a bit of a confused perfume state and have had a few recent misses. A swap package arrived in the mail this afternoon and turns out what I’ve been wanting all along is the Rue Cambon one of you lovies sent my way ! Ahhhhh
I tried this in the early days of tipping down the rabbit hole and did not get it. Lately i’ve been thinking I ought to revisit the Exclusifs, try the edps that I missed, and test the more recent releases.
This one ought to quell my curiosity for some time. Gorgeous.
I have yet to meet an exclusif that I don’t like but that one is still on my try list. You make it sound great!
SotD for moderate house work and light pine straw raking is a good spritzing of vintage-ish Ciara. The initial cloud was great to power me through vacuuming (today’s round required some moving of rolling chairs and crouching to get dust bunnies and cat toys from under dressers and sofas and chairs). I added in the raking because leaves get mixed in the straw if I don’t get it gathered under the tree, and it does not look as nice. Today was breezy and the straw usually falls sooner than most of the local leaves. I then went to the library and nabbed an armful of P. G. Wodehouse so I’ll be ready for Friday. Off to read comments, then on to Jeeves and Wooster.
Enjoy your reading! I am curling up with Pigs Have Wings tonight
Wearing L’Interdit Rouge today and confirmed the sprayer is wonky. ..I wondered if the mechanism would change/improve or was due to it being new but it squirts rather than sprays…must swap out at Nordstrom. It’s funny b/c I have had very few issues or challenges w/ perfume bottles since I began spraying in earnest probably in middle school.
My sister had her 9th of 12 chemo treatments today…75% done!!! Feeling very grateful…she is a petite force to be reckoned with!???
GO She-ra sis!
Great news about your sister!?
Hooray for your sister!
Yay, for your sister!
Gloomy and muggy day here, so I am in the minority with weather today. Definitely Monday-ish weather!
SOTWeekend was Soivohle Paracelsus. I was inspired by Sheri G’s perfume pick in the Weekend Reading Poll. Saturday was celebrating a friend’s birthday by having dinner at a local Japanese restaurant. It was indoors, and I wore a mask whenever I wasn’t eating. It felt a little awkward, TBH.
SOTD = Atelier Cologne Encens Jinhae. I’ve *almost* thunked the sample. Pretty soon the weather will be too cool for this light, pretty incense perfume.
We are gloomy, muggy Monday weather twins. It decided to start down pouring this afternoon.
Blargh!
It turned nicer for me in the late afternoon!
As a personal choice, if I don’t feel comfortable with being unmasked while inside a restaurant (other than walking in, walking out and going to / fro the restroom), I would rather not go. Do you have reason to believe that some in the group may be unvaccinated? I know it’s a different circumstance but I ended up not going to my friend’s funeral service upon hearing that the widow is an anti-vaxxer.
Everyone invited to the B-day dinner has had their shots. A few folks are actually eligible for booster shots right now. And since we were seated at a teppanyaki table, there was a fair amount of ventilation when the exhaust fan was turned on. I decided that potent potables were not a good idea at present.
I don’t plan on eating at a restaurant again anytime soon, though.
Ventilation is good and bad at the same time!
Yeah, I’ve seen some of the computer simulations about that.
Paracelsus … yum. ?
Yes, it is! One of my friends got a whiff and rather liked it, too. I used my little 4mL spray bottle for the first time on Saturday.
I’d take some of that muggy off your hands — it’s hair-flatteningly, nose-bleedingly dry here. I’m getting dehydrated just by breathing…
I’d happily send you some! I’m running the A/C to de-humidify the house, not because of temperature.
Crazy muggy here, but a cold front storm just came through. Hopefully it will blow your way. (Minus the storm part!)
Hellooooo nst! I feel so out of touch.
I’m in Molecule 01 which has become my go to work scent. The past 2 weeks have been so busy. I was in Chicago this past weekend and had a blast. Lots and lots of walking. Gorgeous weather and cheering on a colleague who ran the marathon. We stayed at the world famous Drake where there are pictures of princess Diana from when she stayed there and little couches in the elevators. lol
I accepted a new job last week! I wasn’t actively looking, but a former colleague of mine reached out about a position and I applied, interviewed and accepted all within 8 days. It will be similar to my current position, but no holidays or weekends! Ever! I’m still trying to wrap my head around that but pretty excited!
Anyway, enough about me. What’s new with all of you? If you are still reading.?
Oh yeah, still reading. ?
BIG congrats on your new job, AND for not having to work holidays or weekends! That’s awesome!
Thanks Jalapeño! I’ve been doing weekends for almost 20 years, this IS going to be awesome!?
Congratulations! You’re going to be excellent in your new position!
Thanks Adrihazel!?
Glad you had fun in Chicago. And congratulations on the new job!
Thanks hajusuuri!?
Congrats on your new job, madtowngirl! No weekends, yeah. ??
I love Chicago, too. The river, lake, and architecture are beautiful.
Thanks AnnE!?
Yes, the architecture is beautiful. I did one of the architecture boat tours again this visit.
That was one of the best things from my last trip! Plus, a classical Indian music marathon at the old library building. That was a memorable experience.
Congratulations! I am very happy for you!
Thanks lillyjo!?
How lovely, congrats!!
Thanks Robin!?
SOTD = MAC Velvet Teddy
Just right for today’s weather (stayed indoors except for the walk late afternoon).
I made another egg-on-the-go. I suppose one can call me obsessed!
https://www.instagram.com/p/CU5mACcJZC7/?utm_medium=copy_link
I repeated the recipe with some corrections and added some tips for substitution.
In other news – my Mac laptop does not communicate with my printer. I ended up saving the shipping label and sending it to myself to use upstairs where the printer is located. I tried to print using my iPhone but got an “AirPrinter” not found error. Anyway, at some point I will figure it out. In the meantime, I am halfway done with decanting (for the Swapmeet) and will mail out the packages this Saturday at the latest. I hope to get to the freebies should by a week from today!
Your little portable egg dish looks yummy! The wonderful coffee shop in my home town used to do a little bowl of eggs that they’d scramble with the espresso machine steam wand, with chiles and tomatoes and olives and cheese on top, which they’d sell for like $2. My friends and I were heavy breakfast customers during our poor college-student years!
That sounds so nice. I ended up getting a meal plan as a place like that would have been a good 20 minute walk from the one campus I lived at my senior year.
That looks super tasty! I ought to put mushrooms on my next grocery list… ?
You should! I confess to going to a Korean store in town just about every weekend to specifically get fresh mushrooms.
My son and I made the Cup- o- Egg this morning with cherry Tomatoes. It was super easy and turned out great!
Woo hoo!
I was commando all day today….Yesterday, I spent the whole day trying to organize my collection as part of the seasonal changeover. I want to sell/swap quite a few bottles, so I had to test a lot to see if they were still good. Some of them didn’t make the cut, sadly, and my sniffer was tired, tired, tired by the end of it!
Aw, that’s a shame that some of those perfumes turned. ?
Thanks. Jalapeño. Too many moves, lol!
I wore Chance eau Vive today for the humidity.
It has been really muggy! But I haven’t had to turn the furnace on yet!??
