Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, July to August 2021

Posted by Robin on 31 July 2021 198 Comments

Saturday is the last day of July, and Sunday is the first day of August — don't forget to rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!

We're marking the changing of the month with our standard open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite fragrance for August weather, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

SOTD is Solstice Scents Pineapple Vanilla. It’s so smoky here in MN we are under a Very Unhealthy air quality watch, with the potential to slide into Hazardous! It’s unreal. My asthma is struggling. So I’m trying to stay indoors, calm.
Reading a couple of cooking magazines for new ideas and drinking a iced chai. Pretty lazy but the air doesn’t really let me do anything strenuous. Ha. I’ve been forced to relax so who am I to argue?

Stay calm Kelly Red! You can do it.
We are under flex alerts, power alerts in CA. Will wait till after 6pm to do laundry.

SOTD is Sana Jardin Incense Water. I like this line and I like it more now that they have travel size to test. It’s a rollerball. First world issue.
11 hours sleep broken up by headache. Downstairs for some Advil then back to sleep.

Showered with BBW Japanese Cherry Blossom and used the moisturizer and fragrance spray. Very refreshing and clean. I’m sure it will fade, so will think about what’s next later.

Forgot to post my CP scent yesterday…Aedes Oeillet Bengale. Made sure to get back up travel sprays of this since it’s been hard to find. We took a long walk on the beach yesterday (Lake Michigan) and then a path through the woods back to the car. So many wildflowers. Just lovely. Planning to hit up the county fair this evening to see the BoDeans perform. My husband loves them. I’m clueless.

No perfume yet but I am mulling an order from Feelunique. ?

They have the new Nuxe Neroli oil that Robin posted about, some Givenchy and Guerlain perfumes on sale and an additional code off. ?

I don’t order much from the UK but will I need to pay import taxes to the US please? I believe so but wanted to confirm.

I haven’t ordered anything from the UK for a while, but last time I did I think it was the same as when you brought stuff back from the UK as a tourist, that is, you can bring up to $800 worth of product into the US without having to pay import duties.

Yes, found this via the link below as well…

Packages whose declared value is under $800 ($100 if being sent as a gift to someone other than the purchaser) will generally be cleared without any additional paperwork prepared by CBP.

So the Neroli oil is now out of stock. the discount isn’t good on items already reduced and they will charge $20 for shipping due to perfume being hazardous and thus my fantasy Lookunique order is now over. ;)

I sympathise, things that look like great buys can be cruelly undermined by shipping and import costs.
At least I don’t have to worry about the UK in that regard, for some reason, postal rules prohibit sending perfume to New Zealand :(

I just ordered the Neroli oil from the website Robin posted in the comments section of that post, they did not charge shipping and I got a 10% off code for my first order.

I ordered a bottle of perfume from the UK recently. There were no US import charges or taxes that I could see. However, the UK VAT is no longer refundable, and that added about 16 percent. The cost of shipping (Fedex 3-5 working days) was steep: 46 pounds.

I don’t know if shipping perfume is particularly expensive because it’s considered a hazardous item, or what.

That said, my order arrived safely and very rapidly, and some very desirable free samples were included, so I am happy.

    Hello everyone!

My allergies have been so bad this week! I’ve been trying to stay in as much as possible, never mind that it’s been upper 90’s consistently. I’m going to the pool nearly every day. (Been tested twice, not Covid-19 this time!)

I’m in D&G Feminine today, a fresh but competent white floral, very 90s. Did anyone wear this back in the day? I found a bottle recently and noticed how missed this one is online.

    Stay safe everyone.

More “bright white” than “big white.” It’s luminous but I wouldn’t call it creamy or lush, a bit more powdery.

Cap Neroli from the sample bowl today. I like it, but I won’t need any more once I finish my little spray.

Happy Birthday to Harry Potter! My stepdad and I were reminiscing about going to the midnight book releases together. I was in my early twenties for the later ones, and we both had to work the next day, but went anyway. Super fun.

Today I am wearing MFK Aqua Universalis Cologne Forte. I don’t get the whole “Cologne forte” idea bit I do like the scent – smells crisp like fresh laundry drying outside.

Today’s photo is for a different perfume though, hope you enjoy.

I think I blind-bought all my Serge Lutens. :) I guess that seems nuts, but here’s a thought: what is the point about hanging around on blogs, Fragrantica, Base Notes and so forth, learning who makes smart reviews and noticing who likes what you like if you don’t get an idea of how you will experience a perfume? Fille en aiguilles and Participe Passe were the only total fails out of the dozen or so I have. Also, I live in a small town and don’t want to drive 60-90 minutes to get to shopping centers. My main beef with sampling is *tiny vials* that just don’t create the same experience of a spritz-blitz.

So there’s a saying that bad luck comes in threes. A cousin’s husband died earlier today. He and their 2 teenaged kids were in Israel to help with his mother (not sure of the issue). On a beach outing, he never made it out of the water. We don’t know if he was just simply overwhelmed or if he had some kind of medical episode. Needless to say, my cousin is now on her way there. It’s too sad and so tragic. He was in his late 40s. I’ve met him and have spoken with him over the years and I still cannot believe he is gone.

Yay for August! The year has flown by with disturbing speed, but I’m still glad that spring is getting close.
I’m delighted to be able to join the conversation about vaccinations. My beloved got his first dose on Thursday and my mother on Friday. They were both prioritised as my beloved has dodgy lungs and my mother is 90. I should get an invitation to book in a couple of weeks, as the general roll-out starts to work down through age groups. The actual vaccination might be some way off, but hugely exciting to know that it’s all underway.
Perfume-wise, I ordered another Armani Privé last night, that line seems to really work for me, which is unfortunate for my finances. I’ve had Encens Satin on my list of possible future purchases for a while, and I found it at 30% off! In my own country, so no postage cost – I did not hesitate for even a second :)

You get perfume enabler badge! Read your post and put in my order…blind buy , which shows I have my mojo back. I was interested in etro shaal nur , from the box of samples you gave me, but shipping was up to $100 so this is much better. Alex bought me a vacuum cleaner yesterday (unbidden, for my birthday!) so this is the remedy to that nonsense.

As of midnight last night, our province removed all COVID restrictions: no mask enforcement in public places, no travel restrictions, it’s all wide open. We’re at 81 per cent of the eligible population with at least one shot, 67 per cent with two doses.

Went out for groceries this morning and it was gratifying to see that most people were still wearing masks, because this thing is not over. It must have been the early shoppers being conscientious, because a bit later in the morning fewer than half of the people we saw in the mall were masked. The two of us are going to be wearing masks for a while longer, at any rate, whatever anyone else does.

I wore Jacques Fath Pour l’Homme today because I needed a solid hit of sandalwood but Samsara was just too much. Fath is usually classified as an amber scent and it does have a lot of moving parts but to me the overall effect is of a huge, rounded wooden sculpture, nary a sharp edge in sight. Not sugary, not powdery, just a matte-textured monolith, so beautiful.

I hear you on the pandemic. Here in CA the delta variant is raging. I know several vaccinated people dxed w COVID, albeit they were able to get through it at home. My husband’s hospital is treating the unvaccinated in the ICU. And so it goes. I went to a movie in a theater last night (how could I resist? My sweet happy 20-year old son, said, “Mom, we haven’t had a date in a really long time!”) –we ate our pizza at an outside table in an uncrowded courtyard, and I used my arms for testing a bunch of perfumes that I sniffed outside when we had left Sephora (always a stop on our movie excursions, like the candy shop–its been that way since he was five!), AND I doubled up and wore two masks during the movie—but goooolllllyyyy.

SotD = MFK Aqua Universalis Cologne Forte

because lucasai is wearing it today. A wonderful NSTer sent me a set of travel bottles of the Aqua Universalis variations in a swap. I don’t wear them often, but when I do I wish I had FBs. Silly thinking, as I well know the perfume cupboard will not be empty for decades. ;)

Have a wonderful weekend, NSTers. You smell like heaven.

I’m in JHaG Moscow Mule. Very nice for a hot day spent running around in the kitchen. The hubster’s birthday meal has been prepped, eaten and cleaned up. Roast chicken, braised Yukon gold potatoes, baby carrots and a peanut butter layer cake with cream cheese peanut butter icing for dessert. The only issue with the cake is keeping enough space in the fridge to store it!

The guys are playing pool and I’m chilling out. ? Happy Saturday, y’all!

I’m in Bvlgari’s Amarena, and a new to me body butter, Rose Coconut by Three Sisters Apothecary. I detect zero coconut. It’s one of those sparing, dry rose scents that has a hint of lemongrass, at least to my nose. The “butter” is like a salve–the consistency of many solid perfumes, rather than a thick cream. I like that consistency for my legs and the back of my hands, but some people might find it too greasy. I am very pleased with it! The other scented butter I purchased was Blood Orange Cardamom–looking forward to trying that one as well. These are cheap thrills for us nose-ies.

The comedy of my illness continues and I am just home from hospital having had three surgeries in the past week (post operative infection). Bit tired and hooked up to IV antibiotics in my arm and a negative vacuum drain in my leg , so tubes everywhere. The conversation changed from being cured of cancer to ‘saving the leg’ and to rub it in my phone came up with images of ‘this day a year ago’ which was all beautiful sunrise images that I had taken while walking the dogs through the forrest on the hill. Have to laugh, really. One step forward, two back and all that. Getting my first covid tomorrow. I have to go to the shopping mall and the covid site is in the closed-down ‘off site storage’ (i.e perfume shop, department store). I have two tubes attached to my body, and a ‘ticking’ vacuum pump so I hope I do not arouse suspicion as some mad anti-vaxxer and get hauled off by security. BUT signs of spring: mimosa and rhodos coming into flower. Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit and a dash of Etro Shaal Nur from the amazing treasure trove of samples. I love it. Can’t buy it inNZ and postage is nuts (up to $100) but one day. Happy August.

I’m so happy to read about those of you in other countries who can finally get vaccinated! I’m back to wearing masks if I go into a store, and I’m continuing to avoid doing that when possible. I’m still doing my part to bolster the economy online, though! I recently bought all the original eight Zara Emotions collection in the 10 ml roller balls, after having enjoyed the discovery set. I like some more than others, of course, but I fell into what someone here called a completion fixation.

In other news, I was invited by a published playwright to work with her to create a “fragrance score” for a play she is in the process of writing, and being part of a grant proposal for same. I’m very excited about this! I’ll function more like a creative director since I’m not trained as a perfumer. If we get the grant, I hope to be able eventually to work with a perfumer on a commission.

Yesterday morning I was up at the crack of dawn and talked the dh into a quick getaway weekend. This morning I am sipping chai from the eighth floor of our hotel watching the sun come up over the Mississippi River. It’s so beautiful and serene.
Yesterday I wore 10 CC and today I’m in Terracotta. It’s going to be less humid today so I think Terracotta will work well. This afternoon I will take a stroll around the campus of my old alma mater and then head back home. To reality. Sigh, such is life.
Hope you all are having a wonderful weekend!?

Rabbited this morning, I could really use some good luck after a long string of bad. Outside scrubbing the wood siding to see if I can do some paint touch-up, trying to avoid having to repaint the entire house. :-/

Wearing a bit of EldO Vraie Blonde.

I hope the rabbits bring you lots of good luck! So sorry about your house troubles, ugh. I once lived in an apartment across from a church that rang its bells every 15 minutes, all day long, and I swear I didn’t hear them during my tour! One of my friends said the property manager must have timed the visits to no more than 14 minutes long!

I bought my house during an early winter. It didn’t occur to me to open the windows. Come spring, it turned out none of the front or side windows opened. I still have 2 to replace. I think they didn’t tell me on purpose.

Good morning, and happy August everyone! I’m pre-shower and in Anais Anais. I’m going to try to go to the gym this afternoon, so after I shower I’ll probably put on something else. My gym stopped requiring masks indoors a little while ago, but with cases going up again I’ll probably wear a mask anyway. It’s no fun to be huffing and puffing with one on, but oh well.

I’ve had two weeks at my new job now, and so far so good. I don’t have any projects of my own yet, so I don’t have enough to do during down times, but that will change eventually! I’m still figuring out the office dynamics. I try to get along with everyone, but you can definitely tell some people get annoyed with certain other people, and I’d rather stay out of all that for as long as possible.

I did remember my rabbits today! Fragrance-wise am commando at the moment. It is cool and rainy here.

I am recovering from a busy and active Saturday. Mr. Skal and I introduced some good friends to kayaking (one loved it and the other didn’t hate it, so that is a win) and paddled about an hour longer than our usual (and at midday, vs. our usual morning time). Trying to take it easier today, but school starts in three weeks and I am not ready. (I am in good company there, but eek.)

I picked apricots on Tuesday. A LOT of them. Technically we were gleaning, not picking, and I can home with about a half bushel, free of charge. It’s been all apricots, all the time, in our kitchen since then. Mr. Skal made grilled pork chops with apricot sauce one night, and I have made: apricot scones; apricot and walnut tart; apricot ginger freezer jam; apricot sorbet; apricot ice cream; roasted apricot and honey ice cream.

My question: does anyone have a freezer jam recipe to share? I had never in my life made jam before Friday, and I am not ready to try real (heat-processed/sealed) canning. The first freezer jam recipe I tried must have had an error in it — it had WAY too much sugar (more than a 2:1 sugar:fruit ratio by weight) and even though I had my doubts, I went through with it and had to throw it all away, which was so upsetting, especially after this past year. The apricot-ginger jam mentioned above was good but I would like a basic, reliable, no-frills freezer jam recipe if one is to be had. (I could omit the ginger in that recipe but it also uses honey rather than cane sugar, and I would like a typical, sugar-based recipe — it doesn’t have to have a LOT of sugar, but I do not always want the flavor of h

“Flavor of honey” — hit the wrong button as I was fighting auto-correct.

SOTD is Cristalle EDT. COTD (confession of the day) is that, after the BUB project on Friday, and a couple of mentions that Cristalle EDT has been d/c’d, I ordered (to nobody’s surprise) a backup. While I still could. ?

Just came back from a nice “pool party” with my dad and my 2 year old (who is feeling better). My daughter is off to take her midday nap right now while I am enjoying my SotD post shower = Japanese Cherry Blossom lotion & EdT. I smell yummi!!

Sotd is Zara Tuberose Noir. For whatever reason, I’m really enjoying Tuberose and Jasmine right now. And since the weather has cooled off a bit, something a little heavier is working for me.

I am trying to intersperse charting, billing, etc. with reading NST and doing laundry, dishes, etc. but fun things are winning out over work.

Rainy and cooler today, here, unexpectedly so. SOTD is my new bottle, Nishane Ani, which I bought rather impulsively right before I went on vacation. It seems very nice and I will wear it regularly, but it is not a total WOW! Over the course of a day spent cooking and cleaning, it’s been washed off my hands, and faded. In the course this cleaning I found my little spray sample of J’adore, so I just paused to have a pre-dinner snack of a small piece of nice toast with the end of a package of chèvre with garlic and herbs, and I spritzed myself with this. I like this a lot, but have never bought a larger amount of it than little samples. Today is my mother’s birthday. She would have been 90 today if she had lived, but she was a heavy smoker and she died at the age of 73, before her time. I think of her and miss her almost every day. She wore Emeraude and later, White Linen, and read, voraciously, fiction, history, whatever caught her eye at the library, where she took us kids every time we went to town. The post office, the library, the grocery store, the feed store, it was our routine.

I have 2 sets of rabbits and give one set away if you forgot to rabbit ?.

In other news, August will be my bread no buy month. I do have the remnants of the last loaf and will be finished with that today. Oh, I was so tempted yesterday with the cheese bread at Wegmans and technically, I wouldn’t be in violation of my quest but that would not be complying with my goal. Mind you it’s not no carbs but perhaps less temptation may help me reduce my muffin top.
