Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, early July 2021

Posted by Robin on 3 July 2021 198 Comments

It’s the Fourth of July weekend in the US, and we’re celebrating with our standard-issue open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite fragrance for July weather, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Happy Fourth of July to everyone in the US.
I’m having a lazy weekend and am happy to let you know that after my 2nd shot I only had a bit of the pain in the arm and no other side effects.

Today I am wearing Ilio again, my newest purchase. Might switch to something more relaxing in the evening. Maybe Lavande 44 by Rania J.?

Cool day here, we had a low of 58! Now mid 60’s, but humidity is high. I am wearing the last of my sample of Snowy Owl, which I like more and more each time and wear it. It is entirely suitable for this weather today and seems to be blooming especially sweetly on the back of my hand here in the high humidity and cooler temps.

I would have already bought a bottle this morning except I couldn’t wear Nishane Ani yesterday because my sample of that was drained, and I found it on sale and impurlsively ordered a bottle of it yesterday!
And I also looked again this morning at the St. Clair website, (for the umpteenth time!) and only stopped myself from ordering one of the cute little bottles of Casablanca through sheer force of will, and the fact that my adorable hubby called from the other room, “Is breakfast ready yet?” Saved from one appetite by the reminder of another….
In other news, the surgeon says my incision is healing too slowly and put me on antibiotics. Sigh, always something.

So, have a really good holiday, however you celebrate the Fourth of July. Have you noticed how most of the American holidays are fraught in some way? To my friends who think of this as Occupation Day, it is hard to know what to say, but I keep you in mind.

⬆️ what apsara and allo said!

I hope your incision finally heals. I’m not a doctor so it’s not medical advice – have you been checked for clotting factors? I ask because a niece’s belly button did not dry in the “usual” time. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that her Factor VII was almost non-existent (normal is 100%, hers was < 2% of normal and there was no test that could assess any lower than that other than zero). Basically, her belly button wound would never have clotted but for the introduction of the needed clotting factor.

Interesting info, hajusuuri! But for me, it looks like antibiotics are doing the trick, and the incision is less irritated, less oozy, and the swelling seems to be going down. I think it got infected and the drugs are helping. Hopefully it clears up quickly !

Hi M. I do hope you heal quickly now. You’re right: it’s always something. And handling all the ‘somethings’ with grace—that’s the real trick. And also agree on the fraughtness of holidays.
Hope you have a great one! You do smell great.

Yes, it’s sad about the holidays causing some problems or issues, as you mention. I’ve always LOVED fireworks displays but now with so many friends who are pet lovers or animal rescue activists, it seems inadvisable to admit that I do. I’m glad that, at least, so far none of my cats have ever seemed bothered at all by them. Maybe if I had a frightened dog I’d feel different about it. I will be going to a friend’s tonight to watch the downtown display from her rooftop terrace–it’s our annual tradition.

Wearing Estee Lauder’s Aliage and making a very stiff dark roast espresso (double) and buckwheat waffles for breakfast.

Fireworks have already begun in our neighborhood. Smokeytoes is still under the bed! Everyone have a safe holiday weekend (if you celebrate).

Oh buckwheat waffles! Love them and pancakes. Unfortunately my pancakes come out so flat. Do you make pancakes also? Have better luck? Maybe it’s time to get that waffle maker.

Hope the kitty is ok. One of ours seems to enjoy watching the fireworks. Smoke, our little guy slinks off to the closet of anxieties.

I make pancakes as well, I find using Buttermilk and adding baking powder helps to make them rise, also not over mixing. Here’s the website recipe.

      Oh no poor Smokey!

We had a tiny bit of drive-by fireworks on Canada Day, and our cats likewise bolted away from the windows where they were enjoying the fresh air and spying on the street.

Poor things, but it’s much better than the barrage we used to get living in Vancouver (why were fireworks so much more popular there? A mystery).

You smell wonderful! We sat outside last night, and we take our indoor kitty out and one or the other of us holds her on our lap. At the first distant fireworks burst, she went on alert, and as darkness fell and near neighbors joined in, it was clear she had to get inside. However, when we came in, she had stayed on the entry rug – guarding us??? Smokeytoes is adorable nestled in those towels!

SotD EL Beautiful, a newer version, 2015 or maybe 2005. Because of Thursday’s CP I really felt how many of Estee Lauder’s perfumes I have, love or like, but don’t wear even in a year. I don’t think there are any I dislike – will have to look into that.

Anyone watching Physical on Apple TV?
I moved to Los Angeles from San Francisco 30 years ago this weekend. Getting divorced, broke, leaving my home. Had zero vision on making it through each heartbroken day.
And these years have been infinitely more wonderful than I could have known that day.

    Wearing Dame Desert Rose.

The temperatures finally dropped. Rainy day in the 60’s. What a relief!

We are going tomorrow to my aunt’s house for a barbecue she is hosting with a small group of family members. We will also visit my father at the cemetery.

I wasn’t aware of the B&BW sales until last night. I got a couple of hand soaps for $2.50 and all the aromatherapy shower gels that were $3. It was a good grab.

On my way out now to run errands and then catch up on things at home today and Monday.
Have a happy and healthy weekend, everyone! ?

I can only use them if all the windows are open. I still have some candles, but I will wait until Candle Day sales to get a couple of single wick ones.

Too busy to confess yesterday, but I like to do it as it keeps me “honest”.
So, here goes: Lush Silky Underwear body powder $10
Madonna Truth or Dare 50ml $17, but then I had a $7 gift certificate, so $10.
SJP discovery set $15. Went and bought another one, total $30
Was doing so well, then fell off the wagon with Hermes 24 Faubourg 3 x 10ml travel sprays $70
5ml vintage mini Jean Patou 1000 EDP $10
Total: $130 ~my second lowest quarter these past three years.

I read about it in one of the first NST reviews I ever read. I think it was a post called “cheap perfumes perfumistas like” – or something like that! I’m very cautious by nature, so I read Alyssa Harad’s book (bargain bin at my local bookstore), then started reading perfume blogs, then took the plunge and bought a couple of cheap perfumes. Finally I discovered SL and how odd and shapeshifting they were. MdB and Chypre Rouge were my first Lutenses! I have a book recommendation for the readers out there: Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer.

Sample of Hiram Green’s Vetiver came in the mail and I put it on a blotter right now. Very dense opening, as expected, but it’s turning into a very beautiful and original scent. Quite unlike any other vetivers I know. Possibly full bottle worthy, if I can just find space for yet another Hiram Green perfume. Has anyone else tried this one? I got my sample from Tigerlily Perfumery, no other US stores had samples available yet.

There is an interesting tea note in the middle, and the base is vetiver plus very smooth botanical musk – ambrette, per perfume notes – and it’s definitely a unisex scent. Get a sample first, but you should try it!

I’m loving my sample of this, but then, I love vetiver in all its forms. It’s definitely unisex. There’s ginger, which comes across as spicy, and an incense-y musty note that I like. Could be FBW for me.

In the now-usual warm weather combo of Mandragore and Nuit Etoilee. A friend smells the spice of the former even when it’s straight from the fridge, calling it a “spicy freshie”, a new category for both her and me.

My SOTD is En Passant. I’m currently in an exploring florals phase and En Passant is one of three samples I picked up from Frederic Malle. I’ve worn it a handful of times and some days my nose mostly picks up the lilac and I think it is very pretty and other days my nose misses the lilac and I think I smell like a cucumber sandwich.

I’m playing an outdoor brass band concert for the holiday tomorrow. The rehearsal and concert are on the same day and I’m a little concerned about embouchure endurance after not having played a double in over a year even with keeping up my daily practice routine.

The Emporio Sirenuse ones definitely stand out, though price wise they fit right in. I love their patterns but luckily for my credit card, I have a collection of Indian salwar kameezes that are a similar concept, and I would love to wear them more often in summer- the cotton ones are nice and breezy – but the weather is too brutal outside, and it’s SPF 100 coverups for me, most of the time. For indoor summer parties, whenever such things are again possible, these caftans would be a great choice.

Prowling through the sample pile, I unearthed the untried Arquiste Flor y Canto — so I sprayed some on. Sadly, this is not for me: I don’t get any of the green/bitter marigold to counter the intense sweetness of the white florals. Will wash off and try something else. Happy weekend, everyone!

Today seemed appropriate to pull out Calyx since summer is very much upon us.

We had a small salad for lunch with mixed greens from the tiny garden; I even was able to harvest a pepper. I’m still shocked that the pepper seeds grew and actually became something edible. Also re-planted more arugula and French radishes since there is space again.

If the decants have screw-on tops, get some plumber’s tape (also called teflon tape), remove the top from the decant, wind a layer or two of the teflon tape around the threaded neck, and screw the top back on. Then use parafilm or electrical tape around the outside where the top meets the bottle. That should help. I like electrical tape because it’s stretchy and it comes off fairly cleanly.

I’ve been in Carthusia 1681 most of the day. Now that I have my new chair, Mr. G became envious and took me chair shopping for HIM. He’s fun to furniture-shop with because once he gets into the store he wants everything. We may end up with a new sofa, dining chairs AND a general-sitting chair for him. ?

Well, he picked two possibles. We got dimension info, and then came home to measure the space we actually have … which completely eliminated one of his chair choices. But the sofa that we might end up also getting is basically the non-viable chair but doubled, so he might end up with both of his choices!

I fear we will want new sofas before we have company again. The kitties have torn up my two sofas in the last couple years. They used to be so good and almost exclusively use their scratching posts, but apparently, that’s not cool anymore.

Gah! If we get either of Mr. G’s choices (chair or sofa), that effectively eliminates any chance that we would have a cat in the house – both are done in very buttery-soft leather. Ah well.

Happy Fourth of July to all you folks in the US who celebrate it!
I had my first go yesterday at making a custard square. A work colleague makes the best custard square I’ve ever eaten, and she gave me the recipe. I’m pleased with the result, it’s delicious, but very messy, my custard needed to be just a tiny bit thicker, and I’ve got no idea how to cut it up without squashing it – google has been no help so far.
I think it’s also called vanilla slice, but whatever the name, trying to cut up something made of thick custard between slices of pastry is always going to be tricky :)
Perfume-free thus far, I’m contemplating a walk around town to try a few things.

I saw the GBBO episode with custard squares, they do seem very squashy even with perfectly set custard. I think it’s one of those recipes that’s about the taste more than the appearance. Congrats on making them, they’re a lot of work!

Well, week before last we were in West Virginia visiting the hub’s family. I only took 10CC and Paris-Riviera. They were in my bag from previous trip. Then this past week we moved into our house! I have slept in my bed for the past 6 days and it’s glorious. Also I have my own little “Kelly room” as I’m calling it- a cozy reading room etc.- and it has built-ins so I’m setting up perfume shop there!

    Lily Bermuda Pink.

Today is my parents’ 56th wedding anniversary and we went to their house to celebrate. My Dad has not been in the best of health lately. He had a pacemaker put in and a cardio version performed almost two weeks ago. We have had some trouble adjusting his medicine and setting the pacemaker. Very stressful time, but still nice to celebrate their anniversary.

Hubby and I are back from a long road trip to visit my elderly father-in-law in New England. It was so great to see him in person! We visited him in his assisted living facility every afternoon for two weeks. My nose is full of scent memories from New England: balsam fir, moss, lilacs in bloom, beach roses, old wooden cottages. I grew up in southern New England and spent parts of my summers further north as a child, mostly in Maine or New Hampshire, but also in upstate New York (the Adirondack Mountains). I brought home several balsam pillows!
Speaking of roses, I was tickled to find a rare David Austin English Rose for sale at my local nursery (rare in that I hardly ever find those roses locally). Like all his roses, its flowers are highly fragrant. It will be a nice souvenir of our trip, as we were able to visit a beautiful rose garden in New England that was in full bloom with many David Austin roses.

I also have a Jude the Obscure in my garden! The best smelling rose ever. Sadly they’re too fragile to be cut to scent one’s house – they just disintegrate into a pile of petals. I also have a Glamis Castle – very prolific bloomer and a very pure white.

Thanks! I will replant it in a large pot so I can place it in plenty of sun. I have others in large pots and they do quite well. My biggest success, though, is Teasing Georgia, a climbing yellow rose planted in the ground. It’s huge! And covered with flowers every May.

In no 5 eau Premiere at the moment. Debating on if I should go with Coco Mademoiselle body stuff today or go with Lyric since I am going to a baseball game tonight. Was bad on Thursday since Urban Decay lipsticks are on sale. I meant to buy 1 but got 4. Sephora has the same Urban Decay lipstick sale but they are sold out online.

I don’t know Lyric yet, but I think Coco Mademoiselle is great for a baseball game. It is always VERY pleasant for those surrounding the wearer, it is chic yet elegant without being too much. That’s just my thought ?

The “kitten” (he’s 4 years old, now) decided he was lonely and hungry at 5:45 am this morning, and I am tired and irritable. So, no SOTD, yet. Besides, there’s a run to be had.

Post-running, I have cupcakes to frost before visiting my BIL and SIL to finally meet the new member of the family. Their first child was born last weekend, and Friday was my BILs birthday, so the cupcakes can celebrate for both! I made chocolate cupcakes, and I want to frost them with peanut butter cream cheese frosting. If I’m feeling adventurous, I might attempt to dip them in a chocolate coating (although I’m afraid that will simply mean I end up with lumps of frosting floating in the melted chocolate–maybe there’s a trick to keep it in place).

After chatting here about coffee scents, I ordered a bunch of samples from DSH and Luckyscent. I will play next week when they all arrive. Thank you all for suggestions!

Thank you! I’d love to find a great coffee scent to add to my fragrance wardrobe. And, of course, I had to try some other stuff, too, since I was already paying for shipping. ;)

Kitty wake-ups: can’t live with ’em, can’t live without ’em, to coin a phrase. I need to take a look at my sample assortment soon. Not many have turned into FB’s. Because I tend to get 100ml samples. Oh, and cupcake project sounds wowza – maybe if you have time and space to chill the frosted cupcakes before attempting “the dip.”

        He’s a good boy 65% of the time. :D
Yes, I was thinking I’d refrigerate and let the frosting really set and then give it a try. If it doesn’t work, I can always use the chocolate as ice cream topping or something.

Update–I didn’t lose any frosting in the chocolate! I think maybe I waited too long, and the chocolate coating may be really thick on some of the cupcakes, but they sure look pretty!

Thank you, SmokeyToes! I am not a great runner, but I do enjoy running (mostly). I find that I am so much more creative while I’m pushing myself like that.

And thank you–we are new to being an aunt and uncle! It’s an exciting time for the family.

My big boy, Opie, has been as many as 22 pounds. We keep him out of the bedroom now (as he is prone to explaining that the closet door is closed at all hours of the day and night), but he used to sleep on my chest. I miss his big, furry, purring comfort at night! I’m glad you get to enjoy some furry companionship, even if it’s too early in the morning sometimes.

I am wearing 5 sprays og Mohur. I put this on post my shower after returning from the park with my toddler.
I forgot I had planned to wear SQUID!! Honestly I have been craving Squid and then was just posting about Squid in the damage poll in order to answer someone a question…
But I am really enjoying this spiced, powdery and dusky rose. Wish I ordered more from Neela before the prices went up!!

SotD EL Dazzling Gold, from a nice parfum mini that has been hiding in my drawer. It immediately reminded me of something I sniffed recently, in that persistent way where the other scent just eludes the memory!! I like it very much, but a quick trip over to the ‘Bay would make me say the prices are unicorn-level only.

    Sotd is JD Vanille Farfelue.
Wish I knew how to pronounce it, because it does not flow off my tongue at all.
Working all weekend. Hoping it’s slow tonight. Last night was insanely busy.
    Happy 4th of July!

I’m trying Ilio from a sample. It’s nice, and if someone just surprised me with a bottle I wouldn’t say no, but it feels a bit incomplete to me somehow. Like it needs a bit of sharpness?

I hope everyone is having a relaxing Sunday! It’s a beautiful sunny day here – not too hot. Maybe I can convince my husband to go out for ice cream with me later.

Hi everyone, happy 4th! SOTD is Ofresia by Diptyque and a few spritzes of Chevrefeuille by Jardin de France. Freesia and honeysuckle, perfect for warm weather.

I should go to the gym, I took yesterday off but I got the sum total of zero sleep last night – hot flashes and fireworks don’t mix!

Very productive morning, shopping, cleaning, cooking are done. I went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond for shelf organizers to reorganize the freezer. Now I can clearly see all items in the freezer, old items are tossed.
Enjoying fresh Ruby Cherries for a mid day snack. They are so delicious!

I got the Jivago samples for Sniffa this week but then missed the discussion. Anyway I tried 24K for women yesterday, and that is a POOWERHOUSE. So I sprayed on very lightly today trying The Gift. Maybe too lightly because I can barely smell it, but it seems it’s meant to be quite a lot lighter and just a fun pretty floral. I don’t want to put on more because my friend who is hosting a party tonight for the 4th doesn’t like any fragrances. Usually I take hot dogs (three kinds: kosher, turkey, vegan) but tonight she asked me to bring salad, so I will. I’m going to include some blueberries in it too. We always watch the downtown fireworks from her rooftop terrace. Rain is predicted, so we’ll see. I am being extremely lazy lately and watching old movies. Yesterday’s was James Mason in Odd Man Out–a Carol Reed film that is reminiscent of The Third Man, one of the best movies ever made imho. Those black and white cobbled streets in the rain at night with lanterns and creepy shadows…. gotta love ’em!

The standard camellia sinensis. Interestingly, the plant exudes a bit of a skunky odour, but apparently the flowers (in Oct/Nov) smell like jasmine mixed with marzipan. I’m looking forward to that!
