Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, early June 2021

Posted by Robin on 5 June 2021 203 Comments

It's the first weekend in June, and we're starting the month off with our standard open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, the fragrance you think you'll wear the most this summer (or winter, depending on where you live), whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

I’m wearing You or Someone Like You, and super excited to get a haircut! If I get a short bob I should be able to get rid of all the hair that was dyed and just have my natural grey-brown.

I participated in the CP yesterday but didn’t get a chance to post. I wore Child Extrait de Parfum thanks to the generosity of Lisa D., who passed on her sniffapalooza sample. Verdict? Smells exactly like the Child perfume oil to me, just more projection. Thanks to everyone on NST for sharing perfume, recommendations for other things and just being so darn pleasant!

Have fun with the haircut! My hair has been cut at various lengths in the bob style for decades, and most recently we went a bit shorter and more textured (meaning layers that will either blend smoothly or get piece-y depending on how I dry it) and I’m really enjoying the versatility!

Have fun with your haircut. I got tired of waiting for the almost perpetual state of lockdown to end and for us to get to a stage where hairstylist would be allowed to work, so I had my husband chop mine when he was shaving his head, lol.

My son (he’s 28) cut mine last summer when he cut Mr. SP’s. He didn’t do half bad. Made me rethink the $80 – $100 haircuts. My curly hair is a bit trickier than the super short cut for Mr. SP, but I think with practice my son would get better at it.

I’ve got very curly hair, too, and it’s difficult to find somebody in my teeny tiny town who can cut it well. I have a friend with even curlier hair, and we’ve decided at some point over the summer to go on a short road trip in search of a DevaCurl salon, where the curly hair cuts have achieved a sort of unicorn-like status in the curly-girl world.

C’mon up to Seattle and we can have a meet-up. I have a deva curl salon about 1 mile from my house. I would say it’s still a bit dependent on which stylist you get, but I have someone to recommend if you’re ever in town!

Rezo cuts are also good – from a fellow curly!

As a Deva-cut devotee, I say do it! Getting your hair cut by someone who understands curls is incredible in itself, but I’ve learned *so darn much* from my hairdressers about how to wash and style my hair so that its natural texture is its most resplendent.

        • Kinuknits says:
          5 June 2021 at 9:41 pm

My hair is wavy with some curl, so it’s pretty forgiving… it turned out pretty good for a first attempt (I was prepared to shave my head if it didn’t work out).
My one friend has really curly hair and she usually drives 3hr to Toronto to a specialty salon to get her hair done. There’s probably somewhere closer, but she has family there.

My hair is kinky curly (like Bernadette Peters), I’m a devotee of Deva Cuts. There’s nothing like having someone who understands curls/coils wielding the shears. It makes all the difference.

Enjoy your haircut! I chopped mine and went natural 6 years ago. Letting my bob grow out a bit so I can get it up in a ponytail.

I love a bob haircut. Enjoy it!! I also have You or someone like you and I like it. Although I’m running out of it soon. It smells like fresh green stems, maybe a little bit of mint (which I love) and just fresh lil flowers.

Yay for haircuts! It will feel like heaven!

This is the first thing I am going to book once I’m fully vaxxed, which should be in another month or so! It is close to a year now since my last cut. About 2 months ago I desperately had to get my hubby to trim my hair; only the back length, nothing close to my sides or front. My hair is thick and wavy normally, but it’s so long now after a year that it’s straight and mostly flat on top. Since lockdown, I’ve pretty much given up!

Wearing Parfum d’Empire Corsica Furiosa in copious amounts to face the heat wave we have until next week. So refreshing! One of my favorite summer scents!

Planning to spend the weekend at home after a crazy and exhausting week at work. No cooking, so ordering food for delivery.

    Happy weekend, everyone! ?

In a light spritz of Vol de Nuit extrait with my coffee this morning. Our weather has cooled to the mid-60s and I get to have dinner with my parents tonight. At a restaurant! We’ll be outdoors on a patio, probably with heaters, but still – out! ??

I’m wearing Penhaligon’s Elixir today, which is a spicy oriental, but surprisingly light and transparent. I like it for its fresh burst of cardamom in the opening. I love cardamom and saffron notes in just about anything: perfume, tea, and both savory and sweet food.

Robin, let me know if you’d like a decant — I’d be happy to share some with you! It strikes me as reminiscent of her work with Passage d’Enfer. It doesn’t really smell like PdE, but it has some of the same qualities.

I’m in my sample of Bois de Paradis after chatting with Lisa D about it yesterday. It’s so rich and wonderful.

I went to the store early and now have lots of housework today, ugh. Feeling tired or maybe it’s just the thought of what’s ahead. At least I smell delicious.

Scratch that — Monet’s paintings are lovely, but a bit too watery for Bois de Paradis. Perhaps something more woodsy, deep, and romantic, like this painting by Thomas Edwin Mostyn:

I’m plotting a perfume treat to commemorate the coming end of my school year, and for some (probably foolish) reason, I fancy a blind buy. Contenders are Chanel Paris-Edimbourg, Prada Infusion Mandarine, or Jo Malone Tangy Rhubarb. Can anyone help me decide?

I’m with madtowngirl – the new Chanels are all reported to be well-constructed or outright lovely, they’re available in relatively affordable 50 ml sizes, and Chanel’s U.S. website ships free. I’ve only tried Paris-Deauville, but so far people seem to be loving Édimbourg as much as the others.

It’s verging on hot today, so I’m wearing some nineties Dior Eau Sauvage, surely one of the best hot-weather scents ever devised.

Monday and Tuesday are going to be brutally hot and we don’t have AC so for those two nights we’re checking into a boutique hotel around the corner (literally — it’s about three minutes away on foot). We’ve never done this before but last summer was rough and so this year we’ve budgeted to do it a few times if we really need to. It’s amazingly inexpensive — I think prices went down in the past year due to severely decreased tourism.

Very cool & windy this morning so I went with SSS Amber Incense. Sun has come out now & we’re out for a spin through the farmer’s market.

We got great news yesterday on the house, sellers moved the closing date up 6 weeks so now we will be able to move in sooner. Bastille Day, July 14th! :-)

Happily sporting my newest addition: Nishane’s Tuberoza. Was so happy when it arrived in the mail yesterday!!

Today I am very happy to be enjoying this beauty. Ultra feminine and smells… delicious. Honestly I am so happy I got it. Just wearing makes me want to wear a skirt or a dress and even do a lil makeup. Love the whole experience and love the red of the bottle itself. Love everything about it. Now I am saving for Wulong Cha and a small 15ml of Tuberoza (has to be so cute) but I also desperately want their Tuberoza hair scent and hand cream too. I want the whole nine yards. Judging by how wonderful Tuberoza perfume smells – I can only imagine how their body care products must feel luxurious!!

Beautiful day here and I went with AA Orange Soliea – all gone now except for a faint hint of sweet orange.

I took my little girl to the mall for a rare one on one outing and it was so different yet very fun not being with the rest of the family. Definitely paid each other more attention than usual especially as mr. Yasmina is the more hands on, patient parent.

I was very bad with my credit card and bought a cute Coach rainbow bag. Now I have 30 days to contemplate my impulse buy and return

I thought I was going to wear Shanghai Lily this morning but Lost Cherry is next to it in the cabinet and the vivid red bottle just called to me. I’m watching golf on TV and the cicadas are so loud! The microphones around the tee boxes and the greens pick up their noise. I can’t imagine how many there are. There don’t seem to be any in Oregon.

I mostly don’t get on well with the Tom Ford fragrances (except for Neroli Portofino and Vert des Bois, both of which I love), but I’ve been feeling piqued by Lost Cherry and Bitter Peach as potential fruity-but-not-too-cloyingly-sweet possibilities. I’ll have to give them a sniff at some point.

I”m also wearing Delrae Bois de Paradis today, having been reminded of it by other mentions here over the past few days. It’s a real beauty, though I can never quite decide whether I prefer it or Amoureuse.

I went to a local thrift store this morning, sort of on a lark, but got lucky and found three nice blouses/shirts and a pink dotted silk scarf and a blue big-bead fun necklace. All for a small sum. In general I’m not the thrifting sort but it’s something I used to enjoy doing every so often with my mom and miss. Since she’s tiny she could always find very neat jackets in her size and had such a good eye. I haven’t gone out to a thrift store in well over a year and this was fun today. It was kind of crowded so it might drive other people nuts, but I just feel like, well, OK, hope for the best and trust your vaccine (and all were masked).

I am feeling bolder: I went to an art museum this week where capacity is still limited. Vaccine rates are pretty good here. I’m older, and this was my first indoor activity just for fun, as opposed to errands and medical check-ups.

Art museums are one of my favorite things, and it was great to be there.

Your thrift store finds sound great! I haven’t been in a thrift store in ages, but I’ve generally been unlucky in terms of finding things in my size (I’m fairly tiny). Once, though, I was in a thrift store in Seattle and spied a pair of dusty black velvet 30s-era wedge heel sandals with wee rhinestones and cutouts that, as it turned out, fit my like Cinderella’s slipper — the saleswoman laughed and said they’d been there for ages because they were too small for everyone. They go great with rolled-up blue jeans in a sort of what-oh-these-old-things? sort of chicness.

    Hi All!

    1) Just took a shower, and am in Brazillian Lime & Tea fragrance from Beauty Pie MIXED with a couple of spritzes of Jasmin perfume from Molinard. Very lovely and summery mix!

But honestly Cap Neroli will be my go to this summer- again! It’s just delightful, to me, and I love that herby/mint note with the traditional neroli/citrus cologne scent!

    2) Did a final 90 minutes of cabinet assembly and all of them are now assembled! My new worker then had to dash off to a job that was pre-booked before me, so we will pick up on Monday.

    3) And to be honest, I need the break! I spend time cleaning up the worksite and staged everything so that attachment to the rails and panelling can just go on Monday.

    4) My bank account is CRYING. it will be worth it in the end, but WHEW.

The lovely lupine photo reminds me of the “Dennis Moore” Monty Python sketch…

Wearing Jardin en Mediterranee thanks to Vee and the splitmeet and am quite loving it in today’s hot weather — it’s like a more thirst-quenching alternative to Caligna (which I wear often in the summer months but which can sometimes feel like “It’s broiling out and I’m channelling the exhalations of the sun-baked chaparral and lo it’s hot, I’m hot, there is nothing in this land but heat…”) Sniffing the bottle, it literally smells good enough to drink. It’s possible that I’m a bit dehydrated after dead-heading my roses at high noon, but I’m tempted to put my Jardin bottles in the refrigerator so that they’ll be even more refreshing.

Arrived back home this morning after the week away. We had great weather of nothing but sunshine and left this morning in the rain, so it was perfect timing.

We had the resort pretty much all to ourselves the whole time. They were doing renovations to one of the two condo buildings there (I think due to a flood in some of the condos), so the other entire building was closed. We also ended up with the pool area all to ourselves for some of the days so it was just wonderful!

Pulled out the new bottle of JM Tangy Rhubarb on this hot day. I was out on our deck early this am enjoying the warm weather as I drank coffee. Then I put on a hat and sat outside chatting with a friend, slowly realizing it was actually pretty hot. Noticed my husband shutting windows and figured he was trying out the new AC unit that was just connected yesterday. Everyone here is commenting on the heat, but I’ll take it any day over the heat in NYC. This is a piece of cake.

Speaking of rhubarb, I made my grandmother’s Rhubarb Crunch recipe the other day. It was a hit with my husband – he’d never tried rhubarb. He loves this JM scent also…

Tell us about your grandma’s rhubarb crunch! I love rhubarb so much — we make lots of rhubarb galettes around here, and rhubarb-and-mixed-berry jam, and sometimes just beautiful pink rhubarb compote to spoon over ice cream or swirl with vanilla custard sauce…

It’s a crisp…oatmeal, flour, brown sugar, melted butter pressed into bottom and then on top the rhubarb, which has boiled sugar, water and cornstarch poured over and around. Really basic.

I’m intrigued by a compote. That sounds lovely.

That sounds delicious! The compote is super simple — just rhubarb and adequate sugar plus a wee bit of orange zest and fresh ginger, or berries, or whatever feels yummy, cooked gently and quickly on the stove or in a low oven, just until the rhubarb is thoroughly soft but hasn’t fallen completely apart. It’s still delicious if it falls completely apart, just doesn’t have quite the same lovely texture.

Big perfume day for me. Did I hear about Louisville, KY-based American Perfumer from y’all? https://american-perfumer.com/ Anyhoo, from time to time they have “auctions” for special creations, that include a chance to win a freebie. Otherwise, you are entering to buy a limited release bottle. I won the purchase option for a vetiver tuberose focused creation call Benton Park, by a St. Louis based perfumer name Shawn Maher. He has other lines with some very tempting sounding scents. My bottle arrived yesterday and it lives up to what I was hoping a vetiver tuberose could be. Ca fleur bon did a review; it’s being a limited and likely one-time release is as close to going for a bespoke perfume as I’ll ever get. If it goes to a wider release, some of you might want to sample. Check out the site. Yes I am promoting this store, which also has St. Clair Scents, January Scent Projects, and other niche houses, but I have no affiliation – is that okay, Robin? :D

Busy weekend–yesterday I went to the First Friday art walk–there were some pieces I’d love to get but I’m not buying anything until my stuff comes so I can figure out my wall space. Today we went to the Boulder farmer’s market which is an excellent market with lots of booths of yumminess. Tomorrow I’m going to an outdoor art show. Might as well do stuff while I wait the month for my massage license. Maybe I’ll tackle some museums next week.

My usual summer scents are Gardenia Batik, Freschiiissimo and Haie Fleurie. Today was a Gardenia Batik day. If it’s hot again tomorrow then probably Freschiiissimo

I know about the rain, for heaven’s sake, stop! Not only is it depressing, I have leaks! Supposedly they were fixed but, oops! I have a warranty but the roof guy can’t come back while it’s still so wet!

Good luck with the project of your dad’s house. I am somewhat familiar with that since I’ve helped with my mother’s house, although since the pandemic I’ve stayed here and my brother and sister-in-law have been doing the lion’s share of the work.

Hello lovely NSTers! I haven’t popped by in awhile, nice to be here. ?
I love the picture of Lupins Robin, so gorgeous! I was wandering through the garden at Batemans (National trust) this morning, and was surprised and delighted to discover the Lupins have a wonderful scent- slightly spicy, and fruity too, grape like, I caught the scent on a warm breeze it was really delightful! Lots of gorgeous dragonflies, and shared my cream tea crumbs with a bunch of cheeky blue tit fledglings who kept flitting onto the table!

I liked them a lot but only tried on perfume strips…real skin is always the true test! :) Nathalie Lorson is the nose for all but one I think. Appears to be a good house…not poser niche. ;)

It is hot as Hades ? here. And humid. Ugh! We did get good rain on Friday which was most welcome.

In other news, I am playing hooky with the Tigerlily Maison Violet event. Well, I am listening but looking forward to smelling which is when I will pay more attention. Half the fun is exploring a collection and having the samples on hand to return to for further investigation.

Hello, johanob! I like Aura for a rhubarb note: ever tried it? Glad you stopped by. My Hermes of the week is a vintage Amazone – so *perfumy* just what I love. I had my Pfizer; no real side effects and feeling COVID-free!

        Yay for covid-free!
Amazone is a really nice one,not in my collection, but I do admire it!
Have not smelled Aura yet,the Muglers have been scarce this side apart from the usual suspects!I shall try and remedy that!

I must be undereducated… I thought Africa is a hot continent all over… Must be something to do with the “South” – perhaps southern hemisphere is in winter season now? Like Australia? I need to get a grip on all this!! I never quite understood it…

Yes,we are mostly a “hot continent”,as you say!(esp the men here…yum…HOT.haha!!),but we do have the normal 4 seasons. When I say “freezing” I’m talking 17 or 18 degrees celcius, which to us is COLD!!haha!Rare to have temps in the minus, and we barely ever see snow. We’re an outdoorsy safari hot-temps,flip-flops and barbeques-country,Winter is not really welcome.?✌?
