Saturday is Iris Day, World Red Cross Day, and Sir David Frederick Attenborough's birthday. Sunday is Europe Day and Mother's Day (in the USA). We're marking all the occasions with our usual open thread poll.
Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite European iris fragrance, whatever.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Iris day! My Japanese irises have been unhappy ever since we fixed a leak in our sprinkler system – they like wet feet, apparently – so after they’re done this year I’ll be digging them up and relocating them.
Commando so far, but I’ll choose something iris-y in honor of the day. It’s chilly here this morning – maybe Dior Homme will suit the weather today.
My Japanese iris do very well and yes, they are in the soggiest part of my yard.
I sprayed just before I checked here! Should have gone with an Iris. Wearing Black Saffron instead.
Iris is one of my favorite notes but I think my favorite is the classic, number 19.
My favorite was the almost classic, Iris Silver Mist, but it’s gone now.
?
Robin, don’t you deserve a bell jar of ISM? It is still offered at SL.com; they have 20% off today.
Rumor has it that ISM has been badly reformulated, and isn’t the same.
Oh dear, but good to know, and are we surprised? :\
Exactly. But thanks mossyberry!
Ok, I was planning to wear Jersey, but I sprayed some VC&A Bois d’Iris when I read this. Jersey later (thanks to a lovely swapper).
When we lived in Colorado, I found some very large deep purple iris that (I kid you not) smelled like grape bubble gum–has anyone else ever seen/smelled these?
Robin – In other news, I succumbed and bought the Hello Meyer Lemon & Ginseng toothpaste that you featured in one of the Daily Lemmings. It’s a yes from me, I love lemon (I don’t really get any mint) and I like the adventure of different flavors in toothpaste. (Cue “A whole new world” song.)
Scent twins hey!
We may get a few more partners wearing Bois d’Iris as well.
Hi, springpansy: I know just the iris you mean and yes they do smell like grape bubble gum. Or, I might suggest, kiddies’ grape bubble gum smells like the deep purple iris! I am a dedicated sniffer of iris blooms whenever I see them, and they are wonderful and the smells do vary quite a bit. I only have one yellow bearded iris right now, and it is just beginning to show some color in the bud, so maybe two more days until it blooms. My iris does not smell “yellow” but has that nice (let me try to describe it) tire/faint skunk-pollen-melon-honey smell that most of the lighter colors seem to have.
I just sniffed some pale yellow ones that had a scent along the lines of what you describe above (nice job). I’m glad I’m not crazy about the grape bubble gum scent. I loved those iris. Someday I’ll find out what they are and plant some.
I also have irises that have that scent. A coworker friend gave me some from her garden so I don’t know the variety unfortunately. I remember they were sitting in my garage before they got planted, and the scent was amazing! I had the best smelling garage! Obviously it was the rhizome, not the flower.
Mine are blooming now! They are pretty short, less than a foot tall.
Lovely!
SP – I know exactly what scent you are describing. And I am also a huge Bearded Iris fan and am right there with MossyBerry smelling everything I can get my nose on
There’s nothing else like it!
Oh yay!! I am going to get some as soon as I thunk a tube…I have way too many open at once already.
My parents had grape gum-scented irises in their garden too! I wonder if they’re still there–I’ll have to ask. When I first got into perfumes, I thought there must be iris scents that smell like grape gum. I didn’t know they got the scent from the roots, not the flowers, haha. I still would like to see what iris root smells like all by itself (or orris butter?), so I can better identify it in perfumes. I’m pretty sure I can recognize it, but how would I know when I always smell it mixed with other things?
Those purple iris were all over the Front Range in Colorado when I was a kid. Almost every neighborhood had some. And they smelled great!
I too have gone with a couple of iris-containing , SL Bas de Soie on one arm and the Bulgari blue tea on the other.
Perfect!
Oooooh!? Iris Day!? I didn’t even know and I’m wearing VC&A Bois d’Iris.
I’m also sniffing Boucheron Iris de Syracuse on my one wrist, courtesy of fellow NSTer (you know who you are). Ot highly reminds me of Prada Infusion d’Iris.
What are you all getting for your mums for their special day?
My mom is no longer with us, but the card was always the most important gift to her. I took a lot of care reading through them to pick the perfect one. Sometimes funny, sometimes mushy. Depending on the mood of the year.
I hope you have a great Mother’s day with your mom. I can’t remember now though, do you celebrate tomorrow or a different month?
We celebrate in May too, but on the 26th.
My favorite cards are usually photographs with no words inside at all, so I can make it mean what I want it to mean. I used to have a wonderful card shop near my apartment in Minnesota, but I haven’t found something similar here in Portland, yet. Portlanders like very hipster cards, apparently–lots of cheeky reprints of 50’s women with swear words, that sort of thing. There’s a time and place for such things, but I like a little more flexibility in my messaging!
? That sounds like an episode of Portlandia. Thanks for the chuckle!
Sometimes there’s a kernel of truth to stereotypes.
Happy Mother’s day! ?
And IRIS DAY! ???. Wearing my favorite iris scent SL Iris Silver Mist. I would say that 50% of my collection consists of iris scents, my favorite note ever.
I really made a big damage to my wallet this week. I will blame it mostly to stress. I received this morning full bottles of Vilhelm A Lilac a Day and L’Artisan Couleur Vanille (enabler pin to Hajusuuri on this one, thanks to her recent split). I have a mini of Alien on the way (never tried it before ?) and there are also samples of other jasmine scents waiting for me to click “buy”, based on your recommendations yesterday and early this morning.
We are not celebrating Mother’s day this year. Mom’s health has deteriorated significantly in the past two months. She is now in bed almost 24/7 and dealing with severe pain. Pain medications are not of much help anymore. Besides, some mental issues are starting to show up and appointments have been scheduled for the next couple of weeks, trusting she is able to make it to them. One if my aunts is visiting today and my sisters will stop by tomorrow for a while. I am sure she will be happy to just see her immediate family around.
We are having a rainy weekend, so I am almost on my way out to run errands, before it gets worse outside.
Happy and healthy weekend, everyone! ?
You will smell wonderful! I am sorry to hear about your Mother – but I am glad you’ve scheduled the appointments so her treatments can be reviewed. I hope you and your aunts and sisters will be able to visit, too. I will call my sister, and I am sure she will get to see one of her daughters who lives near her.
You do smell great!!
I’m sorry to hear about your Mom, and hope you get some answers next week. Have a nice visit with your family.
I think you totally deserve a few extra perfume purchases now!
This might be a good time to get out old family photos to look at with your mother. It could prove to be a good distraction from her pain and also provide information you may miss having in the future.
For example, in the past few years I’ve gotten to look at several family photo albums that have been with other family members. None of us have any idea how or even whether we’re related to most of the people in these photos! They could be close relatives, or they could be friends, neighbors, and in-laws. Some are probably grandparents, great grandparents, and even great great grandparents, but, with few exceptions, I can’t be sure. It’s so tantalizing and frustrating.
I was never interested in this when my grandmother and mother were alive, but I stereotypically got interested in genealogy after I retired. Be sure to write names and relationships on the backs of photos rather than thinking you will remember, and write down family anecdotes. Or the electronic equivalent for electronic media.
Hugs and please take good care of yourself in this difficult time. ?
Great, big hugs to you, PL67. I am sorry about your Mom…that is very tough. Enjoy your new acquisitions.
Iris Silver Mist is my nemesis iris LOL?
ISM is never neutral. ?
I’m sorry about your mom’s health issues. Sending some sunshine and hugs to you both.
So sorry for your mother’s day. I hope your aunt provides you a bit of a break. Your mother might like another face(no offense, I think my mother welcomed her children with joy, no matter how much pain she was in) . Can you ask your sisters for a moment to get out for even a rainy walk? Might be a good breather for you, no matter what shape your mom is in, you need a bit of time to recharge.
As far as damage, you deserve it! And join the club! My new bottle of Bee, enabler ? to Hajusuuri, as well, just arrived.
When stress levels and times are easier, I would split your bottles to buy more.
I will email you about Jasmine. Don’t trigger yet, if you are worried!
Didn’t expect anything less than Serge from you today. ?
Hang in there. ?
Another ? for my sash!
I’m so sorry to hear about your mother’s health issues and all the attendant challenges your family is facing. I hope the weekend visitors are uplifting for everyone. Sending hugs and hopes for all possible comfort for your mama and yourself!
Thinking of you! It’s hard to watch a loved one in pain and facing health challenges. ♥
I’m very sorry to read about your mother’s health, I hope something can be done to ease her pain.
You’ve got mail.
I echo everyone else’s sentiments and hope for the best for you and your mom.
You smell gorgeous. I’m so sorry to hear that your mother is not doing well. I hope she has a nice time seeing her other family members, and that you have a chance to have a peaceful moment this weekend. Your purchases sound great.
So sorry there are so many health issues with your mum, so poignant for Mother’s Day, hope things might improve. Families are invaluable at times like this.
So sorry about your mom, pl67. Glad she will have visitors tomorrow.
I’m so sorry to hear this about your mom’s health; I hope you both can take comfort in being together with other family members.
You smell great and woo hoo on the enabler pin. I’ve collected several just this week alone.
I’m sorry your mom is feeling poorly but glad that there will be visitors.
I’m so sorry to hear about your mom’s health and a rough mother’s day. I hope the visitors managed to bring some nice distraction for your mom.
Do take care and continue to keep yourself well scented!
Very sorry to hear that your mother’s health had taken a drastic turn for the worse lately. Hugs.
I didn’t know about Iris Day, so I’m wearing Montale Vetiver Patchouli. Maybe I’ll look for an iris for tomorrow. I have a question about bar soap. I have very dry skin, and I’m thinking about switching to bar soap in my shower. Can anyone suggest something other than supermarket soap that they think really works for super dry skin?
Ooh! How’s that Montale?
I love Beekman soaps, Old Whaling Co., I’ve gotten into using soaps this year. I can add more.
I’m still hunting for the perfect, vegan, palm oil free soap. I used to make soap!
Soaps made with goat’s milk are supposed to be very moisturizing. I have had good luck with them, but they also melt FAST in the shower. Possibly something made with olive oil would also work.
I’d stay away from Lush soaps, as they tend to be a bit drying IMO.
I agree with both AnniePerfumes and missionista and it just so happens that Beekman 1802 has a “Pure” goats milk soap that is triple-milled to avoid the quick melt.
I will definitely celebrate with SL Iris Silver Mist later today!
Then you will smell great.
Many happy returns to Sir David – does anyone else remember one of his specials where he tracked down the origin of an Easter Island carved figure? I was captivated by his ability to get down to the tiniest details and still call on his broader education. He must be one of the great teachers of all time. I am off to find an iris: maybe Silver Iris because it is it carrots and grapes and a woody patchouli, all favorites of mine.
Agree on one of the greatest teachers of all time! It makes me sad when he talks about global warming…like we have all let him down, even though that makes no sense.
One of my junior high science teachers was close to retiring and did not care to teach, so we spent an entire year watching every episode of David Attenborough’s 1984 series “The Living Planet”. Over and over. There were only 12 episodes.
Wow. I didn’t know that was an option! I’ve been doing it wrong.
True story:
I became a science teacher because I had so many that were absolutely terrible.
Yikes. That’s not the sort of “inspiration” most of us are trying for! Good for you for doing it better. As a teacher, I’m not a very traditional authority figure–lots of working to earn my students’ trust rather than assuming they will give it to me because I’m older or whatever–and that’s definitely informed by my own experiences as a student.
LOL, Marjorie Rose! And, good for you sistine!
I’m wildly off-base today with Kyse Perfume Bonbons au Lait. I might have to layer something over this, because it’s striking me as just a tad too sweet (and I’m a gourmand girl, so you KNOW it’s sugary).
Irises are gorgeous, and I’ve got a large screen of the classic Japanese Irises hanging on a wall over here, but I don’t love it as a perfume note. It tends to get too powdery on me. More for the rest of you iris lovers!
Too sweet may be just fine for me.
I haven’t tried that one yet but think I will take advantage of her 20% code YUMMY20 which is good through tomorrow I think. No affiliation but I do love me some Kyse. I have tried all her new stuff up until the Bonbons au Lait and pistachio one I believe.
Sampling Givenchy L’Interdit Eau de Parfum Intense and Lancome La Vie Est Belle Intensément today.
For L’Interdit, I get pepper, tuberose and vanilla…sesame is listed as a note and I can see that….almost nutty. For Intensément, I get raspberries, flowers, vanilla and patchouli….doesn’t smell like original LVEB at all really which some might be relieved to hear.
My sister is recovering well and may get released from the hospital tomorrow.?
I really like the L’interdit Intense.
I’ve been too busy to comment all week but I’ve read the news of your sister. So happy for you both! Continued good wishes to you!
That L’Interdit sounds interesting! I’m so glad to hear your sister is doing so well.
I planned on wearing Orris Tattoo without knowing it was iris day. Will go ahead and spray myself soon.
I’m sending out good thoughts to all those who are needing it today. I know there are many working through challenges with their loved ones, people and fur babies.
Good thoughts back to you ?
Good thoughts are appreciated for sure!
I was looking up medlars and came across this perfume-related post on an a short-lived but interesting blog:
https://notjustdormice.wordpress.com/2015/04/30/wasting-perfume-on-lentils/comment-page-1/#comment-163
These Romans sound so much like modern Instagrammers and Twitterers! People haven’t changed that much.
Thanks for sharing this! Gave me some ideas for my next pot of pinto beans…
I remember my mother had a book called “Cooking With Flowers” that I loved reading as a child — it seemed like magical, fairy-land cookery to me. I planted some ultra-fragrant dianthus in my herb garden a couple of years ago with the specific intent to turn them into a cordial or syrup, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.
What a great book to encounter at any age but especially as a child!
Great post. No more, “gilding the lily” for me. Now I’ll caution against perfuming lentils.
Ha ha — YES! ?
Happy Iris Day! So happy there is such a thing.
Sotd is Iris Ganache thanks to the generous hajusuuri.
I love Iris the flower and in fragrance – a love affair that fully bloomed in this community where you all inspire (and enable!) me daily by sharing your iris loves. Thank you!
Glad you liked iris day! If there wasn’t one, we’d have to make it up
If I had known it was Iris day I would have worn VCA. Instead I had a craving for 10 Corso Como, so that’s what I’m in.
Whew! What a week. Work was good but busy. Now I’m on staycation for the next two weeks! Lots to get done, so it won’t be a totally relaxing time off, but just knowing I don’t have to juggle working and trying to get everything done is a big stress reliever.
I think this is only the second Mother’s Day I’ve had off in the last 15 years because it always fell on my weekend to work.
Yay for Mother’s Day off and time off. I agree, I am always busy during time off but it’s not the same level of stress. Hope you also get a bit of relaxation!
Thanks springpansy! Yeah, I’m hoping to get some r and r after all my busy stuff is done.
Happy Mother’s Day and have a great vacation!
Thanks lillyjo, happy Mother’s Day to you too!?
Happy staycation and happy mother’s day!
Thanks sistine!?
I can’t remember your email. Send me one with your address to eabrit at the geemale place. I can send some of the Terracotta.
Thanks! Just emailed you.
Yay for stacation, enjoy.
Thanks Aurora!?
Woohoo for 2 weeks off! I think checking things off the list at home can be relaxing, too, in its own way. I hope you find just the right balance between productivity and restfulness.
Enjoy your staycation and have a Happy Mother’s Day!
Can it be iris *month*?
The neighborhood irises are in full glorious bloom right now and I’m full of appreciation and envy. I planted about 50 when I moved into my current home — some wildly fragrant purple and white ones that I’d brought with me from a former garden, and a host of other gorgeously colorful ones. Deer and gophers ate every single one within the first few months. But the area in front of one of my neighbors’ homes (we don’t have sidewalks here, so everyone has a sort of feral patch and a bit of shallow ditch in between the street and the official start of their front yard to decorate or neglect as they see fit) is filled with at least a hundred irises, all deep deep purple or deep deep burgundy, and it looks so glamorous!
That iris patch sounds gorgeous!
Wow, that sounds amazing!
Those darn landscaping critters! I’ve had problems with squirrels digging up stuff lately.
I’m wearing OJ Frangipani. The one I always almost buy, then talk myself out of it. I just found a good deal for it in the local facebook group, but again, talked myself out of it. I negotiated a deal with myself that this summer I will use what I already have and once I trimmed down my collection, then I might go for it.
My thoughts have been with India so much this past week. I work in a very international team, and more than 50% of us (including my boss) are located in India. In our last meeting we heard some of their personal experiences and it is so heartbreaking. They have lost family members, coworkers… I hope the situation gets better there soon.
I’ll miss my Frangipani when I finish up my travel sprays. I love it in the summer. That opening blast especially.
India is heartbreaking…ai hope things turn around soon.
What’s happening in India is simply heartbreaking.
I’m wearing Philosykos today for it’s uplifting and cheery attitude. Didn’t check in here first, so I was unaware of Iris Day. I remain generally loyal to Infusion d’Iris, but I will admit I never chased alternatives very hard. Infusion d’Iris is not getting a lot of daytime use these days, but I do sometimes reach for it before bed.
So far as the plants go, I took a walk after checking in here, so I was paying more attention to the iris along the way. Not a ton of stuff in bloom yet, but it’s coming, and I’m looking forward to it. I did encounter a beautiful stand of dark purple iris.
You smell great!
Crazy two weeks. More health surprises from family, my ? and myself than I care to wrap my head around.
Hajusuuri is the greatest of enablers. Hat tip.
My bottle of Zoologist Bee just arrived! Instant love and won’t regret. When I heard it was not going to be available til who knows when I hunted and grabbed a bottle.
But, Iris day? My generous NSTER buddies have shared and taught me about this note, so I shall wear Orris Tattoo which is a very tempting purchase. Eek!
Might be looking at Tihota and Rouge Smoking. Bad me.
Hoping those surprises fade soon!
Thanks so much! Praying a little bit more.
Ugh on the unexpected health news! That’s so stressful. Hope that you can find a way to decompress.
Yup. As if it couldn’t pile on more, my mother in law was exposed to covid.
A dull, damp and windy Sunday morning here, we’ve had a long run of the most fabulous autumn weather, so I certainly can’t complain. It’s an indoorsy kind of day, so I plan on doing some baking. I’ve been trying to reproduce the berry and white chocolate brioche that I used to enjoy at a cafe that closed a few years ago – I’m getting closer!
I’m thinking about some sort warming scent, maybe Lubin Idole post-shower.
Yum! Those brioche sound great. And Idole is just about perfect.
Oooh, that brioche…
I would think white chocolate would be especially tricky in a brioche, since it has such a low melting point and burns/melts so easily! Or is it only drizzled on top afterwards? Another baking nerd question: Does the dough take forever to rise? Enriched AND berries seems like it would.
Sounds delicious in any case! I love recreating favorites!
Oh man when you get that brioche right please share the recipe! I’ve had similar pastries and indeed they are magnificent!
Hope you can nail down that brioche recipe! Sounds yummy!
I got to know Idole thanks to swapmeet and it’s so wearable!
I’m wearing Cuir Cannage today, iris and leather goodness.
I need a new mattress. I know it’s a really individual thing, but does anyone have recommendations? I’m a back sleeper, sleep well in hotels and friend’s houses so apparently I’m not too picky. Mostly I’m torn between foam and innerspring.
I can highly recommend a Kingsdown mattress, innerspring style. If I have to purchase another bed, that’s the one I will go for. We got one that is individual coil wrapped so there is minimal interruption if you have a tosser-turner partner. Best sleep ever!
I bought an Avocado vegan (they call it that because it has cotton instead of wool) mattress recently (innerspring + latex foam hybrid) plus the Thuma bed frame, and just adore the whole set up.
I mention the frame because the Thuma arrived first, and I put my very old innerspring mattress on it while waiting for the mattress, and it immediately improved my sleep. I think my box spring was in even worse shape than my mattress.
I am a side and back sleeper.
I found the Reddit mattress board really helpful! And yes, it is clear after reading there that it’s the most personal thing ever.
My lemming is pacing in his cage over that bed. We are needing a new mattress soon….
I think that if you wait as long as I did to get a new mattress, any new mattress will feel like luxury!
I needed a new mattress, too, but also needed to save money so I went with a 2″ latex mattress topper from Sleep on Latex. It’s *dreamy*.
Mr. Teebear and I did the same and got a memory foam topper (Ploom I think?) as a way to delay needing to invest in a brand new mattress. He’s fine on the old one; I was not.
It really helps!
Just adding that I find foam too hot in the summer. So, if that’s an issue for you at all, you might want to make sure you find something that “breathes.”
Mr. Jalapeno and I have been very happy with our Tempurpedic mattress. I have a mattress cover on it, which seems to help with trapped heat.
I’m wearing Ferre edp for Iris Day. My apricot irises have color at the tips of the buds; hope they’ll be in bloom in another day or two. They have a faint lemony scent that I love. Spotted some yellow ones in the neighborhood along with various shades of purple. It’s a weird day weather-wise; the sun will be out, I’ll get my jacket and shoes on to go for a walk, and then a shower will pop up. Been like that the whole day. No walk yet!
You smell great, I have this perfume too.
Weird weather here too, and we actually had a very brief hail storm…just odd.
Unusually chilly here, but I am enjoying it because it means that I can sneak in a few more wearings of my cold weather heavy hitters.
Had no idea it was Iris Day, but on my bike ride today, I saw some lovely purple irises in someone’s yard. They were gorgeous!
Wearing a combo of Bulgari Black (pre-shower) and Vanille Insensee (post shower) since it is rainy and vanilla goes well with rain.
I had a beautiful clump of white irises but they are already done. Waiting for the japanese irises to bloom now…
Today I’m wearing “Rebalancing Scent” by Act + Acre (the haircare company). Iris, violet, amber, patchouli, papyrus, sandalwood – it’s like a rough draft of Dans tes Bras. I really like it, and yes, it does calm me and center me.
Oh that sounds so nice!
Tuberose In Blue for a rainy day today.
We’ll get rain ☂ too but after the weekend. I love the name of your perfume.
Chanel No. 19 is my iris. Other than that, it’s not a note I love.
Beautiful day here, but chilly except in direct sunlight. The trees are budding, and the tourists are arriving. Lots of folks at the various outdoor drinking establishments. We drove around the county looking at scenery and had lunch at a small local place with delicious chicken dumpling soup, far away from the tourist areas.
And…I would have worn it Friday (I really shouldn’t have) but it only came today…the Jo Malone rhubarb scent that I was lemming and finally got. Shhhhh, don’t tell my husband.
No. 19 and Infusion d’Iris edp are the only iris-centric perfumes I own. You smell great!
Sotd is Metalique, for a busy night of last minute Mothers day shoppers. I broke down and finally got a new phone. The least fancy Samsung model they had. I mostly just talk and text and email, plus NST. I now understand about auto correct, as yesterday it wouldn’t let me type flankers, lol. At least now I can use my 0 without turning my phone sideways! I still have to play around with it..
Yay for new phone, I know I’m not using half of the features on mine.
Good for you on getting new tech that suits your needs!
I was in Chant d’Arômes during the day becauseTulipani wore it recently, I think, can still detect it on one of my hands (it’s my vintage bottle which has more longevity, definitely) but this evening I added Iris Nobile EDP and IN Sublime to compare them.
You’re wearing some great scents, Iris Nobile was my wedding day scent! Can’t remember if it was the EDP or EDT, it was whichever was first released.
Thank you very much what wonderful choice you made for your wedding, I think the edt came out first, more orange-blossomy, so very appropriate for the occasion.
I keep saying that I am going to pull my sample of Chant d’Aromes from the stash to wear, and keep forgetting. ?
Hi everyone, chiming in way late. I started the day in Dune, now wearing vintage Chanel No. 19 extrait.
Mr. SmokeyToes and I watched Sweet Bean, a 2016 Japanese movie. So beautifully paced, and moving. I’ve downloaded the book onto my Kindle.
Movie sounds interesting; you smell wonderful first and next.
Thank you!!
I think I found the perfect post-pandemic party dress, to be worn with either Gucci Rush or Arielle Shoshana Saturday:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0iFBXjRbVl0
Love this!
I love this too. If you do get the dress, don’t forget the blue eyeshadow and floral headpiece!
OMG yes, and it will be hard to resist glitter!
On a non-iris note, Elena Vosnaki posted a poem by Michael Ondaatje on her Perfume Shrine blog, titled “The Cinnamon Peeler,” that I keep re-reading and sighing over:
https://perfumeshrine.blogspot.com/2019/11/fragrant-poetry-cinnamon-peeler-not-yet.html?showComment=1620223088142#c7673396359094448801
I love me a poem with scent wound all through it. And I’m missing Someone so anything having to do with the in-person-ness of love is swoonworthy these days…
Yes, thanks!
SotD = Hiris!
The blue glass bottle always make me happy. I wish more things were packaged in blue glass, or any color glass. I’m having lots of plastic waste guilt lately.
I put Iris Ukiyoe on my desk for later/tomorrow. That’s all the heavy lifting for today.
I vote for more color glass too!
Happy Mother’s Day!
Beautiful picture. I did not know it was Iris Day and wore:
SOTD = Scents of Wood Oud in Bourbon
Love! Dark green juice! Spicy nutty incense and vanilla!
https://www.instagram.com/p/COou5cUBUbI/?igshid=1qzvw2sgzroz5
I also have a Caturday post wherein I show the beautiful dark green of the perfume. Too bad there isn’t an option to get a glass / cut glass bottle because that juice color is something to behold.

Bad behavior observed at Whole Foods:
1) Standing with 2 bags smack in the middle of the main entrance that most people use to enter the store. There is an awning (in fact, wide enough and around the entire front of the store) and yes, while it’s raining, it’s a steady, non-wind-whipped type so you and your precious purchases will not get wet.
2) Ummm, socially distant does not mean you have to leave your cart in the produce section at a heavily-trafficked area while you walk around examining every piece of produce and then walking the winner back to your cart. Rinse and repeat.
The Wood Oud in Bourbon looks and sounds amazing!
It will be very hard to give up the grocery delivery service that I started using during the plague, when I had a broken arm.
Yeah, the Wegman’s by me is more crowded than it used to be. Makes shopping a test of nerves sometimes.
Scentless… might have to dig out Hermes Iris Ukiyoe later.
It’s a bit early up here for iris (unless in a greenhouse), but one of my favorite places to visit as a child was the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens in Montclair, NJ during blooming season. It was always a close second to cherry blossom season in Branchbrook Park in Newark, NJ. Both are worth a trip during their respective blooming seasons if you live nearby.
I’ve got to check out that iris garden one of these days…
Love that photo — I have the same iris in my garden, as well as a similar Louisiana iris, currently in full bloom. Happy Mother’s Day to all who are celebrating today! While I have no sentimental illusions about the challenges of motherhood, being a mother has been the greatest joy of my life. I feel so lucky that I will see all three of my young adult children today! And I’m wearing few drops of vintage Chanel No.5 eau de toilette today, in honor of my own late mother; if she had had any signature perfume, it would have been No.5, which she wore more often than any other.
So glad you got to see all 3 of your children! I drove down to have dinner with my mom tonight and very glad to be here. Will head home tomorrow.
P.S. If you’re interested in my thoughts on No.5, I blogged about it today here: https://scentsandsensibilities.co/2021/05/09/may-melange-marathon-mothers-day-and-no-5/.
I just watched a perfume “reviewer” that was claiming the main note in No.5 is ambergris, and that’s why it “smells so bad, because ambergris smells like a whales stomach” lol. When a commenter corrected her, the response was ” aldehydes come from ambroxan” I almost died!
It’s a good thing we still have knowledgeable reviews!
Chiming in late. I returned from my little beach vacation yesterday. It was nice to get away and see something else! I will need another trip before the fall.
The irises in my garden are in bloom and lovely right now. I didn’t know what color they were when we bought the house, but I kept finding rhizomes. So, I moved them all to the flower garden and it turns out they are light purple with yellow centers–very pretty! We have an amazing iris farm down the valley, and it’s tempting to go buy some more, now I know how happy they are in the front yard. I like the really dark purple/nearly black ones. But now with all the comments above on scents, I know I will need to sniff them all first!
Bet your kitties were glad to see you!
Yes, old man cat is especially glued to my lap at the moment! And the other two keep making sure to be in the same room as me.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! I’m celebrating my own mother in Dryad this morning. ??
That sounds like a good way to celebrate!
Happy Mother’s Day!
I’m in a “mother” load of Miss Dior today in memory of my mother.
She died when I was 16 and was a complicated person, hence we had a complicated relationship. But she did give me life, tried as best she could at the time and introduced me to Miss Dior and Joy.
You smell fabulous! Miss Dior is one of the greats IMHO. I hope you remember many good things about your Mother today.
Thank you!
Mother’s Day is complicated for me, too. Sending you love and solidarity!
Thank you Marjorie Rose, and me to you!
Hello, everyone. Just got back from the park with my almost-2 year old. Today is not a good mother’s day for my family though… Last evening one of our BELOVED dogs passed away… I spent most of the night crying
Just to cheer myself up and get my mind going a little bit, I came here to my FAVORITE perfume blog, perfume-pedia, just my most visited blog anyway – NST. If I haven’t yet thank You Robin – please always know how much I enjoy this here. Even reading perfume reviews from 7 or 15 years ago…
As far as an IRIS day – what a ultra- amazing idea. Iris is and has always been a special perfume note in my heart. Hard to believe but I do not own any iris perfume at the moment. I used to own tons of iris perfumes though. So I can’t contribute much to an iris day unless one of my lavender samples happens to have an iris in it, but I doubt it.
Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear about your dog. I’m glad that NST and fragrance could provide some enjoyment during this tough time. Take good care!!
So sorry to hear about your sweet pup and glad that this community is a refuge in a painful time like this.
I’m so sorry about your dog! If only our beloved pets lived longer. I agree with you about NST–one of my favorite blogs, and with one of the nicest communities around. Thanks to everyone who makes it happen.
Much sympathy to you, and a good cry is a wonderful thing when you have to say goodbye to a dear pet. They know we love them – I was sure of that and comforted by it when we lost our long-time kitty.
My sympathies on having to say that Goodbye to your beloved animal companion. It hurts.
I’m so sorry for the loss of your pooch
Oh dear, adding more condolences — that must be so hard!
I’m so sorry about your pup. My kitty cats Gino & Rocky will welcome them at the rainbow bridge. My condolences…
O. Gosh. I am so sorry. Losing your child on such a special day must have been so tough.
Prayers for you and your baby.
Ohhhhh and what am I saying? I used as I posted my first post – what came to my mind is I do own an Iris perfume!! How bout my beloved Sticky Cake from CdG??? Yesss!! And yesss and yesss!!
Ah, good then.
Happy Mother’s Day everybody! It’s my last day of vacation and spending it in no 5 body stuff.
I hope your last day of vacay went well
Happy mother’s day to all who mother, in all its varied forms!
I love irises (the scent note and the flowers) and I’m really loving reading all the mentions of iris fragrances.
I’m not in any fragrance yet today, but I smell a faint remnant of yesterday’s box of eels, and it’s so so lovely. The drydown is my favorite part.
I like your take on Mother’s Day. ?
Me, too.
SotD = L’air du Temps EdT
From a vintage bottle a lovely perfumista decided to re-home, I’m so grateful she sent it to me. And of course today the scent reminds me of my own mother and all the times she wore L’air when I was a child. My relationship with her has always been sweet and loving, also fraught with the heartache caused by the mistakes and missteps that make us human.
Also grateful for the pink jasmine sitting here on my desk. The vines in my garden decided to give a second showing of their fragrant flowers this weekend, well after I thought the blooms had finished for the year.
Most of all I’m thankful for all the moms! The birth moms, adoptive moms, stepmoms, dads who fill mom shoes, grandmothers, aunties, teachers, friends, neighbors, and caregivers who give and give and give of themselves for the good of someone else. Happy Mother’s Day to you.
You smell fabulous and I’m glad you can enjoy that beautiful fragrant jasmine today!
And thank you for the reminder about “all the moms” who positively impact our lives. I am so grateful for my grandmother and the ways that she was able to be such a loving (grand) mother to me. I don’t think she ever wore perfume but I’ll never forget her fragrant white lilac, columbine, cecile brunner climbing rose and of course, the purple bearded irises!
grandmothers are wonderful! I’m glad yours was so good to you. Mine was loving too. And she always smelled of roses or carnations.
Morning everyone! My SOTD is Dune for men, spicy greens and a fig note. This just fits for today’s warm weather.
We’re headed to Sam McDonald park for a walk! Previously, we’ve seen wild turkeys, banana slugs and loads of hawks.
On yesterday’s hike, we saw a white tailed kite, such a beautiful bird and we rarely see them.
Banana slugs are quite fantastic. I would really like slugs if they did not eat what was left of my hostas after Bambi & Co. stroll by. :D. Also, we have a pair of red tailed hawks that have an eyrie in a big sycamore in our neighborhood. They are in their third year of nesting there. Oh, and I saw a kite once in Florida – they are fantastic! I hope you will see him/her again on your next walk!
Ugh… well that’s frustrating!
Kites are so stunning, I almost can’t believe they are real.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers here – thank you! I will spend today remembering my wonderful Mother who passed away two years ago last month. SotD is Iris Silver Mist. For me, it lives up to all the hype. I have a tester in the Vaporisateur case that says it’s from 2013. I delighted in wearing Silver Iris yesterday; the Atelier is more “me” as I do love sweet perfumes. But M. Luten’s creation does all kind of wonderful development as the hours pass, and I just keep sniffing my arm and smiling. Did someone say “iris month?” Does anyone else have Jontue Iris de Fete? It is my nomination for Ultimate Drugstore Classic. I might wear it to work next week.
And yes, happy mother’s day to all the moms!
I did not know there was a Jontue Iris de Fete! I did wear Jontue a very long time ago in another life
Happy Mother’s Day!!!?Sampling Nishane Hundred Silent Ways and it is lovely…a very sweet floral gourmand.
My sister was released from the hospital and is home. ?
Really missing my Mom today…my third Mother’s Day without her. Big hugs to all and especially those missing their moms today.♥️
So happy to hear you sister is *home*!!! Hugs back – missing my Mom, too!
Glad to hear that your sister is back home! That’s got to be a relief.
Hugs to you re: missing your Mom.
Happy Mother’s Day, NST.
For me, it is a vey melancholic day. I can’t talk to my Mom this year. Telephone access has been nearly non-existent since she had her medical episode last Sunday. I did ask my brother to tell her “Happy Mother’s Day” for me, and to tell her that I love her.
SOTD = Opium EdP. Not at all irisy-y, but I wanted to wear it.
Should be “very melancholic” up there!
I’m so sorry Jalapeño
Thanks yasmina.
So sorry, Jalapeno. You smell great in your Opium, sometimes it’s just right!
Thanks Gail. It’s literally been years since I’ve pulled out this bottle.
Aw, that’s so hard.
I’m so glad your brother will be able to see her and report back, though.
Oh Jalapeño, I’m so sorry. Big hugs to you.
Been meaning to check in all day since I only come to NST on the weekends now but a day of Mother’s Day solo shopping took over. Got some steals from the Macy’s clearance rack, including a $60 Levi sweater I got for $4! I love it when this happens.
In Coromandel after going with Poudre Imperiale earlier today.
VERY nice sweater buy you had today!
