Happy Almost-Friday, and happy National Nurses Day and International No Diet Day! Birthdays: Sigmund Freud, Willie Mays, George Clooney. What fragrance are you wearing?
My lily of the valley is in bloom — I'm celebrating in Hermès Muguet Porcelaine.
Reminder: 5/7 will be "I really shouldn't have"...wear a fragrance you shouldn't have bought, you shouldn't wear, or shouldn't ? (This project was suggested by Katrina, and I can't find the original comment so I hope I have captured her meaning.)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image shows detail from the Hermès Savana Dance longboard, which was $4,425 but is out of stock, as is the Savana Dance skateboard and Savana Dance surfboard (that one came with an "an aroma-infused anti-slip wax, developed by Hermès' Artistic Director of Perfumes - Christine Nagel. The scent was inspired by the liveliness of the ocean spray with a note of juniper berry and pear granita"). You can still get the pattern in a scarf or shawl, though.
In Vilhelm A Lilac a Day. ?
Happy almost Friday, everyone! ?
Happy Friday dress rehearsal day, pl67!
Thank you! ?
love extreme
I smell delicious.
Makes me want to cook Arabic or Persian desserts
Persian Love Cake! The hubby’s favorite is kanafeh.
We have some great kanafeh in Queens. I have never made this at home. Persian love cake sounds really nice to make . Maybe tomorrow
Yes, you do smell delicious…please save me some dessert.?
Will do ❤️
I’m in Tom Ford Lost Cherry (from a swapmeet swap that arrived in the mail yesterday!), completely novel to me because it smells like *sour* cherries, with all their mouth-puckering astringency. It gets sweeter and warmer as it evolves; it’s really nice.
You smell great! Lost Cherry is well done.
I’m wearing Iris Silver Mist for the first time from a decant I bought last year. This fits the CP, because I really shouldn’t buy so many decants that I forget what I’ve bought.
We are all guilty of this. The one I like best is when I find doubles of decants because clearly I did not check and ordered again a sample I already had. There used to be a Hermès CP and I would always feel needlessly left out and then I discovered a box of Hermès samples I had ordered years ago in anticipation of this CP and forgotten completely about.
I’ve done that with taupe eyeshadows. I see a taupe shadow single and omg it’s the prettiest taupe I’ve ever seen. Turns out I already have it!
Same! I finally had to put a moratorium on eyeshadow purchases. If I do see a new one that I like, chances are I can blend my own dupe from the extensive rainbow of taupes I already have.
I have decided to try to “hit pan” on all my eyeshadows and blushes before I buy any more. The mixing can be kind of fun. I am also using some highlighters as an easy eye shadow.
I’ve done that same thing with samples. ?
Hello Robin, just testing my access as I’ve been having problems submitting a comment to this article – apologies of this gets through OK!
Saw this!
So sorry! Was it the stupid spam filter or something else?
Not sure, but it wouldn’t even let me submit the ‘explanation’ box, hence my public appeal! All OK now, thank you.
A $4425 longboard? Wonder how they arrived at that price instead of $4400 or $4500? LOL We penny pinchers gotta pinch a long time for that longboard…. 🙂
Back in Rebecca Minkoff. Yep….I just love it. Gonna get a backup when I run across one (they seem to be everywhere at discounters right now!) And speaking of love: I got a decant of Chanel Cristalle EdT from Royalty Scents yesterday, and it is AMAZING. Those vintage oakmossy scents are always sooooooo good…..
I stumbled upon reviews for that Rebecca Minkoff on Fragrantica and it does sound good. I don’t go to many stores really but shall keep my eyes peeled if I encounter a Marshalls or the like. I feel like San Diego Marshalls are somewhat a wasteland compared to what others find elsewhere in our nation. 😉 ehaeheh but maybe I need to go more
Those stores are definitely rags or riches, sometimes in the same week! LOL I’ve gone and found treasures one day and then nothing just a few days later…..
She-ra, I found a 15 ml bottle of Rebecca Minkoff on a clearance shelf at TJ Maxx this spring. So don’t give up the hunt, there or at Marshall’s!
I love Rebecca minkoff ?
I probably smell like your boots, with a touch of tobacco added? LOL
I have been around a lot of skaters in my day and none could have ever afforded a $4000+ board.
I can only assume these are for Hermes collectors. I would think serious skaters would die laughing if they saw it? And if you took that surfboard in the ocean I assume a shark would just eat you.
If you were dumb enough to pay that for a surfboard and put it in the water, maybe you deserve to be eaten.
LOL!
And now that seems harsh.
My absolute SOTD is SQUID. Every since I got it I have been walking on cloud 9:) I sprayed 3 sprays yesterday around 4 o’clock, two on my neck, one rubbed on my wrists – so note here, none of it on clothing!! – and this morning I still catch a whiff of it here and there as I moved around about my morning. No lie!! Ok so it might not be an overwhelming scent – but lasting power? Unbelieveable!! Now about to shower soon and… Reenjoy my gorgeous Squid all over again!!
Is squid inky? I’m imaging something briny and dark.
Yes inky-inky!! Murky waters minus “aquatic” notes. And solar-salt. Yes, I wouldn’t call it just “dark” but murky is a better adjective 🙂
Hmm. Now I’m imagining salt and pond/vase water. Good they didn’t do traditional marine/aquatic notes. It sounds like that “fresh” vibe would ruin the feel of it.
The perfume itself is a beautiful blue color and the notes are ink and salt with incense and ambrette and probably some other stuff I’m forgetting.
It didn’t work on my skin and I nearly cried because it smells SO GOOD on my best friend – our skin chemistry is different and I should have known better ?
But on the right person it is just *gorgeous*.
That really sounds fascinating! I didn’t like the briny notes in Womanity, but I wanted to.
Wow. I’ve never desired a longboard before, but that’s lovely! I love the old-style botanical and animal prints.
I am on the beach for a few days. I’ve packed all my food and have a full kitchen where I’m staying, so I can stay here and avoid folks. It’s nice to see something different than my house, and I was so surprised at how I happy I was this morning when I woke up and realized I didn’t need to tend to the needs of my cats first thing in the morning! Diego needs love and maybe breakfast, Opie needs reassurance, Sol needs to no longer be old and confused. . . All those needs now being met by Mr. Spicebomb. 😀 This is my first extended time away from my home in at least 15 months.
SOTD will be one of the random samples or minis I threw into my suitcase.
Your getaway sound divine. Enjoy yourself!
Thank you! There’s got to be some plus side to being forced to leave work. (I’m on medical leave for the remainder of the school year.) Trying to at least get some rest.
Enjoy your beach getaway! It sounds lovely.
It’s grey and cloudy right now, which I love. As a kid, my favorite part of the beach was when you couldn’t see the horizon–the ocean and the sky just blend together. It makes the world seem boundless.
Enjoy your vacation…and no cats! 😉
Thank you! I love them, but wow, I forget how much time and energy they require sometimes!
Happy vacation! I love my kitties and Mr. Teebear but indeed, it is sometimes nice to not be responsible for their feeding and needs.
Mr. Teebear is pretty self-sufficient, at least ? but one of our two kitties has a very large thirst for attention whenever she’s awake.
My old man cat (Sol) is absolutely dependent upon me. As he’s aged, he sleeps a lot more on his own (thank goodness!), but when he’s wakeful enough to notice his own desires, he wants to be on my lap, or my shoulder, or otherwise in my business. It can be A LOT sometimes!
I hope your getaway is peaceful and rejuvenating!
Thanks, sistine!
Yay, enjoy your time away!
Thank you, Robin!
Good morning everyone, my SOTD is Eau de Pamplemousse Rose by Hermès. I’m home and resting comfortably, thank you to everyone for the lovely well wishes. They changed my meds (pain and anti-nausea) and I had less issues, we all agreed it was best for me to recover at home.
Sipping on mint tea and plan on napping for the rest of the day. Smokey is very happy mom’s home. He was waiting by the door for me.
So glad you’re home and with kitty assistance!
Glad to hear you’re home and taking it easy!
Glad you’re feeling well and get plenty of rest!
ST- I missed some events! How are you? Didn’t realize you were under the weather
Speedy recovery and fragrant hugs
Glad you are already home and resting!
Thanks! Yes, I’m at UCSF every two to three months for procedures.
One of the nurses and I had a lovely conversation about perfume. I noticed he was wearing Le Labo’s Santal 33. I recommended a few Serge Lutens and Byredo perfumes.
Very nice chat!
Glad to hear your home and resting comfortably!
Happy to hear that you are home already, and being well looked after by SmokeyToes kitty!
How nice that you’re home and all is well 🙂
Currently in Clinique Wrappings body lotion. I had to see if I would like the body lotion any better than the perfume itself. Right now, it’s a big meh. I think that I will wear Coco Mademoiselle today. Tomorrow’s CP is already tough for me. There are a few that I really shouldn’t have gotten but did. The finalists are Coromandel, Lyric and Coco Mademoiselle Intense.
I shouldn’t have bought any of it. How to choose?
SOTD is Chene. My first time trying it and it reminds me of Le Participe Passe; was happy to see on Fragrantica that I’m not the only one who thinks so. Of the two, I prefer Chene — I find it lighter (tho not light) and less syrupy. Not something I’d wear often, but I can foresee having an occasional craving for it.
Finally thunked my Palais des Thes advent calendar. Only took me four extra months!
Was that Advent calendar a good one?
It was my first time having their teas and I thought this would be a good way to try a variety. I liked all but 2 or 3, and mainly because they were straight green tea, which I have never liked. I plan to order full tins of a few of my favorites as soon as I drink down some of my current tea stock.
Wow — did you not like the teas?
The teas were great. It was the tea bag format that was the obstacle. I much prefer to make a full pot at a time, but the bags were each strong enough for only one cup, maybe two. So every morning when faced with the option of making a full pot to take back to my desk, or having to make a series of several cups, the pot usually won.
Right, I gotcha. I usually save tea bags for vacation.
Rhubarbe Ecarlate for me today. ❤️
Mmm! You smell good
Thank you!
Not much chance of our lily of the valley blooming any time soon here in the north east of Scotland, where we’ve been experiencing extremely unseasonable wintry weather, even given where we are – the BBC had photos of various areas in Scotland, a couple very near us, of winter weather scenes, & we had 4 hours of rain, hail, sleet & snow the other evening! All that said, I love Muguet Porcelaine that you mention, Robin – it was one of my late mum’s favourite flowers (the other being freesia) – she had it in her wedding bouquet & we always had it growing in our various family homes over the years. I managed to ‘blag’ samples of MP from Brown Thomas in Dublin, & more often, from Frasers in Glasgow – the Hermes concession staff were always much more obliging than their department store counterparts! Sadly, Hermes announced they were closing their Frasers concession earlier this year (am assuming this applies to all Frasers stores, hardly surprising given the circumstances) so my MP sample blagging opportunity at the most convenient location for me is no more! Robin – many thanks for sorting out my access issue.
Goodness, that weather sounds brutal! Sorry to hear you’ve lost your sample blagging option in Glasgow. I love lily of the valley too, and also had it in my wedding bouquet. Where I live in the Southern USA it is really too hot for them, but I have a couple of shaded planters where I nurse along a few LOTV plants. Where my sisters live in New England, LOTV is like a weed, it grows and spreads so fast!
Oh, on the contrary I thank you for putting up with our very crappy spam filter! And of course sorry about your crappy weather, and losing your Hermes counter, that’s a shame.
Almost Friday! I am happy in Candy. Drink right now is assam with a little milk.
So nice to be happy with your fragrance, isn’t it? And of course you smell great.
Well thank heavens it’s No Diet Day! Completely unaware I still polished off 2 donuts this morning. We opened our cabin yesterday and this was our first morning celebratory breakfast.
Coffee, donuts, watching the water and the ducks from the front deck. No frag yet, but later I have some calming solid Pacifica Tibetan Incense in my purse.
I’ll wear that when we lit the fire tonight.
Watch out for the ducks, they and the rabbits have been messing with NSTers this week ? And congrats on opening the cabin, that sounds like a dream!
And seriously, look at this
https://news.yahoo.com/flock-giant-california-condors-trash-140323029.html
Your morning sounds like a treat. Enjoy your cabin!
Wow, heaven! I’m so happy for you!
I love the design on the skateboard and echo that for a surf board.
They must be purchased as decorative art only because I can pretty much guarantee you’d be laughed out of the water if you showed up with that! And I’m not sure the skateboard would get you any respect either?. And who would want to scuff up a $4000+ board on the rails? Oh the horror!
Guessing that’s right…they’re essentially wall art.
Definitely shouldn’t be keeping my mini bottles of Tocca Stella and Cleopatra. They were a gift years ago but never caught my fancy.
Ah, good take on the cp.
Oh, but those bottles are so pretty!
I’m wearing Shalimar Souffle Intense today, which is a mild “I shouldn’t have” because I bought it unsniffed. But at less than $40, the pretty blue bottle alone might have been worth it. I do like it, though, and it’s gotten some wear this winter.
Keep only if you have a collection of minis, perhaps?
Simple pleasures Thursday = Prada Infusion d’Homme
Yep, you smell great!
I am scentless as I am expecting some decants in today’s mail which I will promptly tear into when they arrive. 😉
Thanks for so many well wishes for my sister. They found no cancer in the pancreas mass removed and she spent last night in ICU which was expected. She had the whipple procedure which is major surgery and will spend 4-7 days in the hospital. Feeling so very grateful.?
The work situation continues unabated?but it’s a large issue affecting many and completely beyond our control so I have decided to focus on what is in my realm.?
So glad to hear that news about your sister, She-ra! Hope her recovery from the surgery goes smoothly and as quickly as possible.
Oh boy, rather too much on your plate at present! That’s great news about your sister, though, and I hope her recovery is swift and thorough. I hope you’re doing alright in spite of the stresses and have a joyous decant frenzy ahead of you!
What a relief about your sister! I hope she has an uneventful recovery. Enjoy your decants and, I hope, a peaceful end to your week.
Hooray for your sister! And best calm vibes to you.
“Duck and Cover!” sounds like a good approach to what’s going on with your work. And not Oakland Fresca’s duck, either!
Great news about your sister!
I’m wearing Mandarine Basilic today, it was a blind buy and I love it. As most of you know, I am no gardener (though I try) but I walk past a house that grows everything beautifully and I struck up an acquaintance with the homeowners. They have planted their tomatoes, peppers, and lots of other stuff I don’t recognize so I shall do the same. Off to the nursery this morning.
My husband said he was not going to do a veg garden this year, but he snuck in a few nursery plants too 🙂
Under “I really shouldn’t have” is probably just about ever back-up bottle I have bought. On occasion I have actually started on the second bottle, but many times I have either gotten tired of the perfume, or found, say, an iris perfume I like even better. In one case I admitted defeat and started using the bottle as a parfum d’ambience (saying it in French is letting it down easy).
It’s interesting, isn’t it. I love it and seem to be going through a whole bottle and think I’ll need another, but then…they sometimes lose their luster or “the call of the new and possibly better” takes over.
Yup, no back up bottles for me, ever. Unless it means two travel sprays! ?
I love my back-up bottles. They give me deeply important peace of mind. However, I try to never buy a BUB when I’m first loving a scent. I wait until I’ve used up some of it, and it’s clear it’s not a short-term infatuation. Only exception is if something suddenly becomes at risk of discontinuation or reformulation. Then, I let myself consider buying a BUB, although truly, there are few scents I have felt were so wonderful, I needed that reassurance.
I can understand this approach, too.
I am wearing Guerlain Meteorites Le Parfum today.
Pretty and happy!
I went with Rahele which is perfect for a sunny, mild spring day.
I can only imagine how nice Rahele must be!!
I also have a mild I shouldn’t have but will mention it tomorrow…
I’m in Eau des Baux today–more swapping fun! it’s about the right amount of amber for me, meaning very soft with some spice and resins. I’m feeling a bit down and disengaged, but soldiering on.
Aww I hope You feel better!! We all have those days… May some cheerfulness come to You very soon!!
Thank you!
Sending hugs — take good care of yourself today!
Thanks!
Sending hugs and cheerful vibes!
Thanks – went for a long walk and feeling better now.
Hugs to you.
Thanks — perfume friends do help!
Hugs. I’ve had some days like that recently, too. I get it.
Yep — I know I’m not alone.
One foot in front of the other 🙂
Yes!
Yesterday I just found out Masque Milano released a new frag: Lost Alice. My favorite fairy tale for sure. Lost Alice was inspired by a 3D Disney Movie that I too watched with my mouth wide open… Beautiful art!! Plus Lost Alice is focused on the Mad Hatter’s Tea party so… It is a must try for me!!
Ooh that sounds fascinating! I’ll have to look up the notes.
This one caught my eye, too.
MM is a classy outfit and always worth a sniff
I have a test spray of Musc Ravageur on one hand today. I love musks but wasn’t sure what I’d get out of the top notes of this one.
It is, sadly, another “shouldn’t” for me. Orange/mandarin are just so tricky on me and it’s not working.
A shouldn’t for me too…
Oh boo! I know there’s plenty more fish in the sea, but it’s still disappointing when you’re utterly convinced you’ll like a fragrance and then it’s a flop, isn’t it?
After a somewhat fraught night with very weird dreams featuring a high school boyfriend, I’m in MFK Aqua Celestia. I’m not usually a fan of musk in perfume, but in this one it’s nice – very fresh and beachy without smelling like suntan lotion or salt (not that either of those is bad …).
High school boyfriend? That’s a big yikes from me.
Ditto!
Exes in dreams are THE WORST.
???!
I started out in a small spritz of PdN Fig Tea this morning, but wasn’t feeling it so I went with a large spritz of Iris Torrefie on the other arm. Much better now!
Yay!
sotd: vintage Joy. Lovely base, but none of the storied sparkle.
Oh, I do love vintage Joy though. One of the few things left that really smells like real flowers to me.
Dreadfully behind on NST news — it’s one of those weeks — but hope to catch up soon and trust that everyone is doing well (or getting better) in the meantime. I’m in Lonestar Memories today — it was sweater weather this morning, and I know I’ve LM on the sleeves now — will it stay forever? hmmm.
I find that some perfumes really cling to clothing — Dzing!, Jicky, and Lyric Woman in particular seem to fuse to sleeves and scarves and underthings. I love finding these leftover scents on things!
You smell amazing!
Sweater weather here this morning as well.
Late to the perfume party today, but I’m in Paestum Rose after waking out of a dream that I was playing a baritone sax that was taller than I am, with the smell of roses in the air. I blame the low-grade, post-vaccination fever!
Haha – great dream and you smell great, too.
I wish I had fun dreams like that!
Same!
I love that your dream was scented!
I am making an effort to reduce my collection by using the nearest-empty bottles for a couple of weeks at a time. It’s hard because I love them all, but I am approaching 70 and I know I have more than I can consume in my expected lifespan! I used up a one ounce bottle of Guerlain Champs Elysee yesterday, and today I am working on a 1.7 ounce of 24 Faubourg. Hope to finish and thunk it within a week. Lovely orange blossom.
Love 24 Faubourg – you smell divine.
Thank you! I am a big Hermes fan.
That is next-level thunking, as we say around here…
Clever!
Thunk or no thunk, wear what you love! You smell great today.
Awww, thanks.
Completely failure on the CP, I’m wearing Serge Lutens Bois de Violette – an absolutely should have and have done on every count. Bought a bottle, bought a BUB, wearing it today 🙂
Yay, stocked for life!
In Prada Infusion d’Iris absolue today.
You smell great Aurora.
Thank you Robin, it has remained a favourite, it is quite like l’Heure Bleue, it’s true but not identical, there is place for both in a collection, I find.
Possible CP compliance; I’m wearing vintage Chanel No. 19 today.
I have several vintage bottles of scents I’d worn long ago. I have the scent memory in my mind’s eye, but invariably I end up disappointed when I spray them. Something is either missing and maybe it’s lost the top notes; probably they haven’t been kept in pristine conditions. But that doesn’t usually stop me from continuing the search.
SOTD = Eris Parfums Mx.
Nice – warm, spicy, woody
The gift set is very well done and came with 10mL travel sprays of every Eris perfume plus two 2mL atomizer samples of Mxxx..

In other news and I hope Ede reads this, I found out that the home office deduction for those who are not self-employed (if you get a W-2, you are not self-employed) is limited to people who live in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Minnesota, New York and Pennsylvania. In any case, I did not estimate my tax correctly because I am getting back a good sum of $$s from NY. I had previously, in 2019, adjusted for NY withholding because there wouldn’t be enough to cover the 3 months I worked there. With the pandemic and subsequent WFH, I should have adjusted NJ withholdings and left NY alone. Oh well…I just made my changes last night and will recalibrate once I know my work from the office situation. All these to say I made great progress with completing my tax returns! It will be painful to write the checks but I will be getting a refund from NY ??♀️.
I am so surprised that Mx. is not more talked about. I think it’s gorgeous and hits all the soft woods, spice, ambergris desires for me. I enjoy it so much more than LL Santal 33. I suppose maybe it’s too soft for some.
Curious what you think of Mxxx? Similar?
I haven’t tried it yet. Next week. I have to decide on a CP appropriate perfume for tomorrow.
I saw your swap wish list and I sent you an email – not sure if you got it?
I did and I was super excited about it. I’ve emailed you back twice. Did you not get mine?
Hey there!
This figures! So Oregon is not one of those states because of course we are not, despite the number of employees who were working from home. Sigh.
It feels like Friday to me. But this isn’t the first day this week that it has felt like a different one. ?
I am fully on board with International No Diet Day… we had pizza for dinner! ??
Latest Mom update: she is being moved to the rehab facility as I type. My brother called me as he was bringing her belongings there. More updates later, I am sure.
SOTD = by Killian Angel’s Share, from the sample stash and an incredibly generous NSTer. It’s perfect for the cooler weather that moved in overnight. However, I can’t see wearing it in warmer weather at all. This is a cozy blanket of a perfume.
We also had pizza for dinner! It’s been a long week. I’m glad to hear your mom is being moved to rehab.
Well, hi there pizza twin!
Thanks. Yeah it HAS been a long week. Feels like a month.
I’m glad your mom has a place at the rehab facility.
And you smell nice!
I’m so happy you are wearing Muguet Porcelaine, Robin! I love love love it. Today I wore Lutens’ La Vierge de Fer, for my May Melange Marathon daily post, so it doesn’t really fit the community project. I will try to do better tomorrow! OTOH, given the scent’s reference to the “Iron Maiden” of medieval torture notoriety, someone must have done SOMETHING they shouldn’t have … Not me, I swear.
Ha!
Hiris today. I shouldn’t reserve this, and should wear it more frequently. Love this scent.
To quote tiffanie: “Yes to Hermes!”
Perfect response to the CP!
“Really shouldn’t have” is basically the story of my entire perfume life.
lol! So true of many of us!
