Tuesday scent of the day 3/16

Posted by Robin on 16 March 2021 233 Comments

It's Tuesday, the second day of National Introverts Week, and Jerry Jeff Walker's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Parfums de Nicolaï Vie de Château, in the original Eau Fraîche version, from a terribly old sample. It smells fantastic. Tea at the moment is a mix of Kusmi Tsarevna and Halmari Estate Assam from Upton.

Reminder: 3/19 will be Foody Friday...wear a gourmand or foody fragrance (this is a repeat project from 2015).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is San Francisco, California's most famous twins, Marian (left) and Vivian Brown, photographed in the 1990s, enjoy afternoon tea (LOC) [cropped] by The Library of Congress at flickr; no known copyright restrictions. (You can read more about Marian and Vivian Brown at Wikipedia, or in Tracking The San Francisco Twin at Narratively.)

A really good marmalade is so delicious! Just the right touch of bitterness, balanced by all that sweetness.

I love marmalade! An,d not the same, but in the same vein, I’m looking forward to the new Escentric Molecules 01 + Mandarine: https://www.fragrantica.com/perfume/Escentric-Molecules/Molecule-01-Mandarine-66047.html

After months of avocado toast for breakfast I have finally convinced my mom to try it and she is also a fan. Thankfully it has been a great year for avocados! (but I wouldn’t put it on cinnamon swirl bread)

    Hello all!

I’m in Jean Michel Duriez Bleu Framboise, lovely rose with a hint of bitter chamomile. Sadly very soft. Has anyone else tried this line?

I’m baking my loaf of bread this morning as I won’t be back home for at least 15 hours. It smells so good, I can’t believe I won’t get a bite before 11PM!

    Stay safe everyone.

Yes this was a blind buy. I found it on clearance. I like it in that it fills a perfect rose niche in my collection but I hoped for a bit more.

Given the name, I’m assuming there is a strong raspberry note – do you get one? And is fresh/tart or jammy?

(Actually, the name makes me think of those bright blue, sweet&tart blue raspberry Blow Pops that were super popular when I was a kid because they’d give you a blue tongue for hours)

Honestly, it has a bit of fruitiness but nothing overwhelming. Nothing like the shot of musky fresh raspberry flavoring!

I wore TF Lost Cherry yesterday and I am in Ariana Grande Cloud this morning (high-low!). This is an easy CP for me. I have realized that many, although not all, of my fragrances have at least a gourmand note in them.

Yoga, then coffee and I made another batch of my latest favorite breakfast sweet bread, which I posted here before but must mention again: https://smittenkitchen.com/2014/10/carrot-cake-with-cider-and-olive-oil/
Then I suppose I will need to do my work.

I did also, it would have been so special, and FUN! Twins run in our family, I have two pairs of uncles and two pairs of cousins who are twins.
I console myself by saying as a Gemini, I already have a twin.

I am so glad I purchased a large bottle of Cristalle edt around Christmastime. I was hesitant, because for years, I just never clicked with it. I think it took me wearing Cristalle Eau Verte to get me to warm up to how beautiful Cristalle is.

I just checked out Chanel online, and no EDP (as you said) , and the EDT is on backorder.

Oh no! I was just saying I wanted a bottle of Chanel no. 19. Maybe I should act fast. It looks like it’s only available on the Chanel site itself and some department stores. Or the evil bay, but I’m wary of fakes. So many other perfume sites don’t carry Chanel at all, or just have a few of their perfumes. I wonder if any of them ever have sales or offer points or freebies.

Morning all, my SOTD is vintage Chanel Coco EdP, with loads of spices, amber, vanilla, and resins. Sipping on my coffee before I head out of the door! No toast, but sauteed spinach and egg whites. Trying to eat healthy after overindulging on Saturday. :)

I love the picture Robin! Back when I first moved to SF, I worked in the Financial District, I used to see the twins all the time! Their clothing shop was up the hill (a steep hill on California St.) from the Bank, I used to pop in there all of the time and look at the goodies.

I saw those twins up close in (I think) the big Macy’s in SF (Union Square?) one time in the early aughts. They were wearing some crazy-cute rainy day outfits with coordinating hats, boots & umbrellas. The cosmetics & fragrance SAs were gathered around them, oohing & aahhing. They really were quite charming & vivacious. Local celebs.

All this talk about bread and toast is making me hungry! I have plans to make banana bread later today so I can freeze a loaf for Easter weekend. We have plans to get together with my (vaccinated) family for an almost one year late celebration of my mom’s 80th birthday. My recipe makes 2 loaves, one of which will be claimed up front by my 16-year old son. I was going to freeze a loaf last time, but the one in college begged me to mail it to him. How can a mom refuse? Wearing Chanel No. 22 now, but planning to change to Chergui later on after a swim (thank you, Hajusuuri!).

Unwittingly participating in the CP with “Beekeeper’s Daughter” which is described as honey, clary sage, fennel, thyme, peach blossom…but reads as pho on me. I’m going to try to wait it out for something more appealing but I keep catching whiffs of myself and laughing.

No credits but lots of spring vibes in Grand Chalet. I finally caved in and made it my (max) one perfume purchase of the month which I am allowing myself this year.

Beautiful scent – as I love linden and mimosa it’s doubly delightful to me ?

In Safran Troublant for comfort this morning, watching the frost slowly recede across the lawn, pinballing between helping my son with his remote kindergarten and shoveling what I can out of the work avalanche. In spite of some nice visits with loved ones lately, I’ve been feeling terribly bleak and tense and sad for the past week. Hoping that tea and cozy fragrance can gentle me through today.

Commando so far – my body seems to still be on standard time, but luckily nobody cares if I get up late. Well, Mr. G cares because it delays his coffee-making. ☕️ My arm still has traces of the Soivohle bourbon geranium oil tried at bedtime last night. It’s pretty potent, and the website’s description is spot-on. Tried a spritz of Cuir Ottoman over the oil and that was kind of interesting, but I think the oil might be better paired with something less sweet and more green or fresh or rosy. Will keep experimenting!

Back to report that the bourbon geranium oil is quite lovely layered with Chanel’s Bel Respiro – could have been named Bel Respiro Rosé or Florale or some such.

Trying two from Une Nuit Nomade though neither are in my vanilla/gourmand wheelhouse ;) …Nothing but Sea and Sky and Bohemian Soul.

Nothing but Sea and Sky is citrus, musk and sandalwood. Bohemian Soul is an herbal woods w/ some iris and spice.

Nothing but Sea and Sky veers into detergent territory to my nose almost..maybe the musk? ;) I use unscented laundry detergent. Many scented detergents smell absolutely terrible to me ehaeehe it seems like manufacturers have added more and more scent to laundry detergents over the years though I can’t understand why.

Shalimar Eau de Cologne today, from a very much smaller available choice.

I packed up almost all my scents yesterday. The bottles without boxes were wrapped with a bit of bubble wrap and tightly packed into a styrofoam container that we kept from a mail order prescription my husband receives. Those in boxes are packed in a book box.

I kept out a few of my go-to and irreplaceables.

I had plans to do gourmands all week – wore Ambre Narguile yesterday – but today I’m in Chanel 31RC. Trying out a sample and I like it so far, a little spritz goes a long way! It almost strikes me as hybrid of Cristalle and Coco, two I really like.

If anyone needs a little distraction today, I stumbled upon this lovely home tour of the British writer Olivia Laing. Her garden and books are dreamy, and there’s even a surprise fragrance bit! Do let me know if you watch it, I’m eager to discuss the fragrances.

SOTD is Eau de Cartier Concentree from a discovery set I picked up at TJMaxx 15+ years ago. Haven’t worn it in years I think it has lost some citrus over time, bc I am getting much more of the coriander and floral leaf. I used to think of this and the standard Eau de Cartier as crisp, white, button front shirts (this one just made from a slightly thicker cotton) and I would wear one or the other when I went on interviews. Not sure if it is the juice in my bottle or my nose that has morphed, or both, but it is now too coriander-heavy for me to think of it as a crisp shirt.

They list yuzu, coriander, violet leaves, lavender, cedar, amber, and patchouli. I can’t smell the yuzu and the coriander is more prominent than I remember. I’m still getting the other notes, so I think the citrus just didn’t survive the time (and less than ideal storage) and as a result the coriander is out of balance.

Yesterday was Bois de Violette (SL) because I am still besotted with it from last week, but I guess it counts (I have the violet pastilles in the cupboard to prove it, although I am avoiding them since I broke a tooth by biting one last fall — and yes, it says right on the container not to bite them). Today’s SOTD is Histoires de Parfums 1804. The travel size of this one — which one of you suggested — will probably be my first purchase when I release myself from no-buy land.

Also, since we are on gourmand week, I would like to thank Robin and the other NSTeadrinkers for bringing Upton to my attention. I ordered a bunch of sample packets and small sizes last fall, and we have been enjoying their products a lot. I’ve even found an Earl-Grey-adjacent tea that I can drink with pleasure (St. Isaac’s Blend). Earl Grey generally makes me queasy! I’m about to make the almost-daily pot of Russian Caravan.

You smell lovely–1804 is a great scent but I didn’t get the connection with George Sand. I think I expected a more challenging fragrance for her name and this one is very easy to wear imho.

I was looking for something else in my perfume cabinet when I spotted L’Heure Bleue and my hand went for it. It’s EdP and I’ve had it at least 10 years now. Wow is it gorgeous. Good scent for a thoughtful rainy day. My brother and I are discussing moving our mom from Assisted Living to Memory Care, and also the pros and cons of her having a shared room there. We aren’t sure if she would mind losing her privacy or benefit from having someone else around for companionship and conversation. First we need to know more about the other lady she might be sharing with. It feels like such a major decision.
All this talk of breakfast prompted me to take a picture of mine, simple as it was. You can view it here if you like: https://www.instagram.com/p/CMfP8KZJXlLvzBlL_vgpPb0jQ609nM8TJ5h3-M0/. It was tasty: basted egg on pumpernickel toast with a few strawberries on the side. Hit the spot!

Anyway, in more mundane things, I’m reporting on my SOTM: 10 Corso Como.

And. . . I have an appt this Sat for my younger son and myself to be vaccinated. He has health complications and as his primary caregiver I also qualify. Amazing. Just a little while ago I thought for sure it would be mid summer at the earliest before I got my jab. Wonders never cease.

I will be finishing Wolf Hall (Hillary Mantel) tonight and then have the other two books lined up already. Someone here on NST recommended them a while ago.

Tea this morning was the usual Taylor’s Assam plus a decaf chai teabag. This box of Assam seems to be lasting forever! Guess I shouldn’t complain.

I participated in a Zoom class on white tea over the weekend. I’ve never been able to brew white tea correctly; it just turned out sourish. Well, it wasn’t me. I think I was just using inferior tea! We all brewed loose leaf tea sent to us for the class, and it was lovely. I’ve been brewing a cup of it in the afternoon since then. It’s so nice to slowly sip a cup of tea and really meditate on the taste of it.

I’m in Montale Chocolate Greedy today, for cp points. ?

Oh, that tea class sounds interesting. Is it an open-to-the-public type thing? I have never been able to appreciate green tea unless it is cut with a good amount fruity/herbal tea (I know, I know “tisane”), but I strongly suspect I am brewing it wrong.

It’s absolutely open to the public! The class was given by The Cultured Cup, a tea shop in Dallas. They ceased the in person tea tastings due to covid, so they do zoom tastings. I have no affiliation with them, just like the people there and their tea.

I’m right there with you on the green tea. It’s usually too grassy and astringent, or something, for me. Maybe I’ll “see” you at a tasting sometime! ?

I’m in Burberry Brit Red from an older (but still fresh) decant that caught my eye thus morning. It has rhubarb, mandarin, and vanilla so I think it fits the CP.

I went on a little sample buying binge this weekend and am excited for the samples I ordered to arrive. I ordered 6 samples from L’Aromatica (mainly interested in their Daphne and Kulfi), Zoologist Dragonfly (tried a spritz when it first came out and realized I wanted to check it out again before the reformulation comes out) and Musk Deer, and D.S. & Durga Jazmin Yucatan.

I also ordered three small Chanel decants from eBay: Coco EDP, Chance eau Fraiche, and Allure EDP. I wore Allure in high school and Chance eau Fraiche soon after college and have found myself craving both again lately. I figured I’d start with small decants to make sure I actually want to own them and that it’s not just a bout of nostalgia. And I threw in Coco for good measure because I finished off a decant a year ago and want more.

I love Allure edp – do report back on how it works for you! Also, I recently got the current version of Coco edp, and I just love it. It is a modern perfume – has that airy, “fat-free” quality – but it is a winner.

Wore my mini bottle of Scherrer again, because I really liked it.
And I finally met a friend for a walk, that I have not met since December. Felt good to catch up and chat a bit.

SOTD = Theodoros Kalotinis Coffee Addict EDP and Vanilla EDT

Humongo Sample purchased all the way from Greece! The layering combo worked and I bet that they will also be fabulously simple on their own. Sometimes, you just want to spritz and go about your day with no fuss.

SOTD Lancome Santal Kardamon which to me is gourmandish with boozy cardamom-vanilla, but falls short of being violently sweet.

I am also coveting everyone’s breakfasts!

I’ve had a lovely long weekend back home in Montreal with Mr. Teebear and the cats, and head back to Toronto tomorrow.

Had the gas meter replaced today, and it was almost a non-event. The service person who came by to do it was very polite and efficient. What could have been better was the letter that my utility provider sent about the procedure. Basically, the tech needed access to anything with a pilot light after he was finished to re-light them. Why the bleep didn’t the letter just SAY that?

SOTD = Dior Poison Girl EdP. Orange and vanilla gourmand, but this vanilla is lighter than the one in Mon Guerlain.

Wait, there’s a National Introverts Week? How did I miss that? I’m a card-carrying introvert. My SOTD is the new formulation of Cabochard EDP. I’m intrigued by it! Still making up my mind, not sure what I think, but I don’t dislike it.

I just did a (shortish) M-B test this week and it turns out that I am an introvert, too — in fact that is my most “marked” characteristic among the four. I guess this is surprising only because I have been with my husband for nearly 20 years, and in comparison to him, I am indeed a social butterfly.

I forgot about Friday’s CP, but I happened to start with Rihanna Rebelle, a chocolate covered strawberry, in shower gel form because I am near a “thunk.” So I continued with the edp for SotD. I dislike ginger, which is very present, but the other notes made it a fun choice, and the ginger eventually fades out. Not sure what I will pick for Friday. I missed yesterday, but want to report what fun I had wearing Replica Bubble Bath, from a kind NST’er. It not only smelled wonderful in a clean but not “fresh” way, but it had great lasting power.

I wore Demeter Sex on the Beach – South Beach (with a twist of Tangy Orange). Found this in my very old stash of things I haven’t worn in over a decade. It’s fun and shortlived like most Demeter scents.

In other “very good news”, my sister texted me to let me know she got the vaccine today. She went to a drive-thru location and was done within 45 minutes of arriving. Timing was everything! The province was wanting to vaccinate due to the high number of variant cases in the area (by age range). First come, first served! And my friend’s father is getting is shot on Friday! I’m so happy and relieved about this?

That’s great to know! Our mayor has an auto message every Monday and Friday. Yesterday, he mentioned CVS near me is vaccinating by appointment only. I will probably wait for that. I pretty much will refuse to drive more than a few miles just to get the vaccine earlier. Nor will I take the train just to get it — I also qualify for NY whenever my age group becomes eligible with no strings attached.

I wore Rose 31 today. It was so beautiful in the morning, then I forgot about it in the afternoon but now the last part of the dry down is smelling great.

I’m not sure if I’ll participate in the CP – gourmands and I are wary acquaintances. My skin amplifies sweet notes so much that it’s chemical warfare. Any sweet/ foody thing I wear has to have a serious herb or earthy note to balance it.

    SotD = Ambre Narguile

It’s cold here! I was shivering indoors this morning, the floors feel cold even with the furnace running. But the sun is shining, and the house warms up as the day goes on.

Is Ambre Narguile a gourmand scent? Smells yummy to me. :D

Beware the Ides of March was in full force yesterday morning. I was woken up very very early by someone knocking on my front door. It felt even an extra hour “early” according to my brain, given that we’d changed the clocks forward an hour the day before.

On my doorstep stood a smiling and apologetic electric company worker. He was there to tell me that the scheduled maintenance for the day meant my driveway would be blocked. If I needed my car I would have to park it down the block, out of the way of the crane and big trucks.

Yes, I needed my car so I could drive to my school site to work from there while the electricity and internet at home would be off due to the maintenance. I got dressed, moved my car, and as I walked home, it started to rain a bit. I had not thought to grab an umbrella. Sigh.

At home I shucked off my wet clothes and went back to bed for an hour, got up, dressed, made breakfast, and put ice packs in the fridge to keep food cold while the power was off. Grabbed my car keys, then opened the curtains at the front of the house to see all the maintenance trucks were gone. Poof!

Due to the slight rain, and some very high winds that began in that hour while I was asleep, the electric maintenance work was cancelled. I would have gone back to bed if I could, but I was laughing so hard at the absurdity of my morning I couldn’t have slept again.

tl;dr – stay in bed all day on the Monday after the clocks change. :D

    Sotd was Cafe Tuberosa.
My Sephora is now letting customers swatch and try make up and spray perfume all by themselves. You must sanitize everything and keep your mask up. It looks like by May here, 16 and up can get vaccinated. My age group is next week, I think. I’m still not doing anything until I have a visit to my doctor next month.
I tested one of the new Jo Malones. Frangipani. It was ok. Also tried Oud and Bergamot, it was not ok. Lol.
