Thursday scent of the day 3/11

Posted by Robin on 11 March 2021 223 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday and happy Johnny Appleseed Day. Plus, it's the one year anniversary of the day everything changed.* Birthdays: Ezra Jack Keats, Douglas Adams, Bobby McFerrin. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: Diorissimo, again. Some day I will have to figure out how many community project points I've taken with Diorissimo over the years.

Reminder: on 3/12, for plant a flower day, name a favorite flower that you grow in your garden (or in a pot?) or that grows locally, and wear a fragrance with that floral note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

*When everything changed might depend on where you live, but March 11 is the day WHO declared a pandemic.

I have a bottle and I find its sprays more like a mist, so I keep my little sample sprayer and also use that since it comes out more like a stream, and then I can respray on the go. I only have half a bottle of this left only because I have so use so many sprays

The pandemic and I appear to share an official birthday but I’m just gonna pretend I don’t know that…

My son got me a potted Arabian Jasmine so for once I can participate in the CP!

It has alot of buds and they smell wonderful. I’m terrified I’m going to kill it so if any of you have care tips let me know! I live in the Midwest so it will be an indoor plant half the year I suppose

In Fleur de Lalita for a day of self-care and no work ?

      Happy birthday!

The jasmines that I’ve grown need a good amount of water. Not to the point of being waterlogged, but regular watering.

The ‘Maid of Orleans’ sambac jasmine I have was getting yellow leaves from a shortage of iron. It’s called chlorosis, and I suppose it’s the plant equivalent of anemia? I put the recommended amount of drops of a liquid fertilizer that includes chelated iron into the water in the watering can, and the plant has bounced back amazingly well. The yellowing leaves became green again, it grew some new shoots with properly green leaves, and it started blooming.

I think the tender jasmines I currently have inside, close to the windows, were happier being outside through the summer. Once the temperature outside doesn’t go below 55 or 60 degrees F or so at night, they can go back out for a few months. The best thing to do is to put them in the shade on the front porch for a few hours a day, then gradually get them accustomed to the full sun. Otherwise, the leaves will burn. And I need to remember to water them, since they dry out quickly outside when they’re in pots, too.

      Good luck!

I don’t know what type my jasmine is but I’ve had it for 8 or so years, and I do what Neyronrose says; I am in Zone 6. It has gotten a touch of powdery mildew over the winter some years, but recovers when it gets back in the warm sun – I just wipe off the mildew, thought I think I did use an organic spray once. I especially think the recommendation to gradually re-introduce to its preferred full sun is important. Mine is in a huge pot, and has a bush form. I give it a rough shaping every year or so, and I use the granular potted plant fertilizer each Spring. They are a delight on a Summer night. Happy Birthday, too, Yasmina!

Happy, happy birthday, Yasmina! Seconding neyonrose’s comments on jasmine and adding a few more. I also live in the Midwest and have a potted jasmine plant I’ve had for many years (it was in a small pot when I got it and is now 5’+ tall!). Jasmines like humidity, so during the time it sits patiently inside near a window in my bedroom during the cold weather a humidifier is always nearby. And I spritz it also when I water it. In early spring I begin to fertilize it. Once the temps reach no lower than 60 degrees at night it moves outside onto the sunny deck just outside our bedroom and perfumes the night air all summer long – it absolutely loves our hot, humid summers. Wishing you many happy years with your son’s beautiful gift!

I agree, jasmines and gardenias (same family) love humidity. My FL home has loads of jasmine vines.

I water mine deeply once a week when it’s indoors, but it’s in a large, deep pot. Outdoors, it depends on whether we have rain or not.

Oh, good points about the humidity and the other tips there! And gosh, that got to be a big plant, huh? I may have commented on NST last summer about how the tender jasmines were thriving outside here when the weather was extremely hot and humid. At least something was happy about that weather. lol!

Do you think I should keep it in the bathroom? There’s some sunlight there and its more humid then any other part of the house

Sounds like a good idea. Mine gets partial sunshine when inside and even gets some blooms while indoors but bursts into bloom from the heat and humidity when outdoors.

I found an almost empty decant of Annick Goutal L’Ile au Thé. It was from a freebiemeet and I had never smelled it. AG does such good citrus scents, and I can smell the tea in this one. I emptied the small decant, and now I need another (larger) one.

Le temps d’une fête. Halfway through my small bottle, but fortunately I got a large BUB, when I still bought those. Went for a nice walk at lunch time. The weather has been blustery and rainy today, but I was lucky to pick the the right time between two serious showers of rain. Dramatic skies, crisp but not quite cold air, and some sunshine. Wonderful!

Morning all! My SOTD is the original Jessica McClintock by Jessica McClintock with wet stemmy greens, cassis and Lily of the Valley. This is one of my favorite soliflores.
Very sleepy, class ran late last night, I could go back to bed but I’ll walk in a few, after the rain subsides.
I’m trying to set up my Smart Band watch to track steps, I found one for $12.99, now I have to set it up. Since when did type look this small?? 😯
Will anyone be willing to loan their five year old to me for assistance setting it up?

I found a great ginger/scallion sauce recipe, which I served over baked salmon and noodles last night, if you google Francis Lam’s Ginger Scallion Sauce it will pop up. It was delicious! It would make a nice marinade for chicken if I add fish sauce and soy sauce.

The scent sounds lovely, but after years of holidays where my sister and I were forced to wear matching Jessica McClintock dresses, sometimes with my mom in the “mother’s dress” version, I don’t think I could bear to wear anything from that house again, even a perfume. 🙂 My sister and I would burn those photos if we could.

My new backyard is snow-covered dirt right now. It will become lawn, but we are only about 20ft from woods. So not sure how much we will do in way of flowers or plants back there. I like that unimpeded view of the woods.

In Courrèges Blanc. A beautiful, soft, woody iris scent that I enjoy, but I forget to wear it often!

Another gorgeous sunny day in the 60’s. I have all my windows open and it feels energizing! ?

A croissant with custard cream and my second cup of coffee with a pinch of turmeric. Thank you, Marjorie Rose! It tastes wonderful! Another spice for my coffee added to the list.

Planning to take a long walk outside and enjoy the warm temps, while they last.

I’m going to start the day with Songes and let the jasmine waft while I go for a short run.

I was sad to leave well established star jasmine vines I’d planted at our old house and have been trying to get a couple of vines established at our new house. There’s nothing like that heady scent on a summer night.

I put on a dab of my beloved Shalini this morning. Probably not my #1 anymore, but still a favorite and certainly the most expensive perfume I have ever bought. (Current prices are starting to catch up though.)

Shalini story: One time a friend picked me up from work and when I got in the car he said, “did you just take a shower? you smell really fresh!” I was really surprised because I had worked all day and participated in a yoga class at lunchtime, no shower. He made a couple of other comments as well and then I remembered I was wearing Shalini and I think that must have been it (despite it only being a couple of dabs from the morning…)!

I’m in JHaG Musc Invisible and getting close to thunking my travel spray. I think I’ve become anosmic to this one. I can smell it when I first spray and then within a couple hours it is gone. It wasn’t like that when I first started wearing it, I’m glad I didn’t go for the full bottle.
It seems fitting that on the one year anniversary of the day everything changed that I got an email from my daughter’s school saying that she will get to start in person school two days a week on April 20. I am so happy for her that I could cry. This year has been so hard on her, as it has been for so many kids.? Better days are finally coming!

I’m in vintage Chamade extrait today, thanks to Aurora who reminded me of it yesterday. I start dabbing this one and I’m overtaken by a desire to bathe in it! Gloriously sunny today after several darkly grey days, and last night’s raindrops are still sparkling on all the plants outside. Switching gears a bit too hectically between getting a habitat restoration construction project out for contractor bids, getting my son squared away with Zoom-dergarten, and prepping for my dad to show up and celebrate his birthday tomorrow. All good projects, but my fluster-cup is always filled to overflowing so the stress comes to the surface a bit too quickly…

I was commando all week because of a very strong reaction to a medication I was taking when I got the vaccine. Feeling better today so dabbed on a tiny bit of Shalimar, which should be safe, but perhaps my bottle is turning. I should have followed Robin with Diorissimo.

Tomorrow will be Diorissimo or Muguet Porcelaine. Not sure we can plant anything at our condo. The HOA has lots of rules. Gave all my LoTV and plantings to family and friends before we moved from our old house, since they were bulldozing it.

LOL! You know them so well from my descriptions. 😀 I may go with a spritz or two of something flowery at bedtime. I really didn’t have the chance to put on a fragrance during the day today, but I did work out in the yard for three hours. Fortunately, I remembered sunscreen and a hat.

Part of the time I was putting hardware cloth protection around my roses, part of the time I was clipping the grass around my garden plants with those spiffy grass clippers, and part of the time I was placing lots of “T-shaped” plastic labels that had the name of the kind of flower on it next to said plant. I think I had a couple dozen labels that said “daffodils.”

We’ve got a number of drifts of snowdrops in the back yard, and a few smaller patches near the front porch. I saw the first crocus blossom in our yard yesterday, after the snow had melted on the hill in front. It was a pink “tommy” crocus. Today there were a couple of the pink “tommy” crocuses, a couple of little patches of ‘Mammoth Yellow’ crocuses in bud (I guess they’re supposed to be mammoth-sized for a crocus…?), and a ‘Cream Beauty’ crocus open.

Keeping it simple today, just some Rose 31 body lotion.

I picked many lilies of the valley for my mom growing up. There was an old, deserted house down the block that had a large patch of them under a big oak tree and I looked forward to picking dozens of these each year. The smell, of course, was magnificent.

Interesting morning…6 inches of snow overnight, and of course I just bought a 2WD car. Took a couple tries, but I was able to get out of my driveway after a ridiculous amount of snow brushing. Before that, I managed to break my first glass sample vial (a perfume lover’s milestone, probably) trying to get the stopper out. Not a complete shatter, but the top where I guess I pushed too hard. A smarter person might have just tossed it out, but it’s Iris Torréfié, and I’m under an irresistible coffee-floral spell, so I scotch taped it back together with a resolution to get it used up over the next couple days.

I’m wearing Vanilla Flash from the purse stash today.
    People are nuts story-
A customer comes up to me, and pulls a wooden candle stick holder out of a plastic bag and says “is this your tag?” I look at it and tell her no, it was not my stores merchandise. She then tells me that she wants to return it because bugs were eating the wood, and she had brought the bugs with her in the bag! Thank God, I had not touched the merchandise or the bag! This candle holder was $7.99. I ask you dear nsters, would you have tried to return this? Because I would have thrown it in the outside trash immediately!

Someone (I’m sorry I don’t remember) mentioned Jil Sander No. 4 yesterday and I immediately wanted to put some on. But I waited until this morning. Wow is this gorgeous stuff. And yes when I read the list, it’s got just about every flower on the books in it! On Monday I went to a garden store and bought four geraniums with bright red blooms. The world outside is so brown and dead here right now, and my mom always brightened up her porch with bright red geraniums in blue and white Chinese pots. She also had a white wicker front porch set (two chairs and a table) and would keep a blue and white plastic tablecloth on the table. With the white porch rails it always looked so pretty. I’m not at all fond of the smell of geraniums, but love how they look. Ours tend to get killed by the summer heat, but hers always bloomed so beautifully in the Michigan summers. Anyway, this scent is supposed to have geranium in it too but I’m not getting it through the plum, peach, rose, and bergamot. I’ll keep sniffing to see if it shows up. It’s a bit cloudy out by pleasant and I plan to go for a walk this afternoon to look for nesting birds–there’s an area where dozens of large herons and egrets always come to nest in the spring.

That sounds like an ideal front porch to laze about on! I put two red geraniums on my (very small and furniture-less) front porch a few months ago, and am trying to encourage them back into lushness after an unfortunately hard freeze back in November.

I used to live near a blue heron rookery and the constant pre-teen-heron chatter was hilarious.

Still commando — I felt really awful for about four hours this morning (18-22 hours after Pfizer shot #2). Now I’m just very tired but otherwise okay. Just sitting in bed trying to catch up on work emails, posting new assignments, etc. I will probably go do Infusion d’Iris again. I have a lot of it, I like it, and I expect it will not wear badly even if I’m feeling a little off for the rest of the day. It is warm here today — about 72F — but overcast. We have windows open and I am loving the smell of fresh air. Our kitty is very happy, too — he is a window cat.

I may have slightly over-spritzed – I was in my closet spraying, and right after that Mr. G hollered “what smells so good?”. 1) A sunny, chilly morning! SOTD: Jo Malone Rose Soap & Electric Rhubarb from Floral Street. Very zingy, green fruity, with a drydown that sticks close to the skin.

    2) Making a batch of super rich turkey stock- apparently everyone in Portland is making stock/bone broth and there were no chicken backs to be found! I could have made beef, but it’s a two step process that I did not want to do. But there were turkey trimmings to be found- wings and necks, which is cooking down into a very rich and smooth broth. I put garden thyme, sage and parsley in and it smells like Thanksgiving in here! 🙂

You’ve just made liquid gold! Don’t know that Jo Malone, but I am a fan of rhubarb note.

Oh how you are right! I drank a cup for lunch- I made a quick soup with some spinach- and it is truly wonderful. i felt satisfied and energized; I kept working all afternoon with NO BREAK and great focus.

Oh if you can, check out the Jo Malone soaps- they are a really great way to wake up- or go to bed- and they scent the whole bathroom so nicely.

Commando today except for TF Champaca Absolute lingering from last night. Some soreness in my arm from vaccine round 1, but otherwise no issues. Did have a crazy dram last night that I was showing COVID symptoms and had to convince everyone it was bc of the vaccine and not bc I had it. Also I had to take a final exam that I didn’t study for. Not sure why my dream self didn’t just say, “Yes, I do have COVID, so I have to take a make up exam after I recover” and then spend the time studying, but I guess I’m OK with my dream self being honest to a fault.

Need to re-test a a couple of my Regime des Fleurs samples. The sample set came with a $40 off code that expires next week, so need to decide which, if any, FB to order.

My arm is already better after Vaccine #1 and it’s my 2nd day.

Why do we dream stuff like that? I had those college dreams forever – I signed up for a class and never went and then had to take the final, you know the kind of stuff. And I would NEVER do that!

Sunny and currently 68 in NYC! I have managed to finally unpack some of my perfumes and am going to work my way through some questionable bottles. Today I’m wearing vintage No. 19 edt which seems to be off. Or I’m off!

Yeah, I thought so too but I’ve sprayed it a bunch. It could just be that the top notes have disappeared – it’s a galbanum bomb now. When I have the chance I will make it into a store to spritz myself silly with the current version.

I’m very much looking forward to the weekend.

Dabbed on Bukhara from my sample that arrived yesterday. At first sniff, it’s amazing with a similar opening to ISM. I may have to apply a bit more to see how long it lasts on me.

In Guerlinade as my hommage to Lilac. I have had En Passant but don’t currently so this is the next closest thing I have.

Lilacs are so beautiful. My climate is too warm for most of them, but I’m able to grow dwarf Korean lilac (“Miss Kim”) in pots, so I get some of their fragrance.

The truck thing will get resolved, eventually. It’s one of the defective airbags, and right now, they don’t have the replacement. And since it’s on the passenger side, and currently turned off, I’m not majorly worried.

I wanted to kick that scammer where it counts so badly after that phone message! Lots of red flags there letting me know it was BS.

SotD Jorum Studio Phloem for a gloriously sunny morning and afternoon.

Walked 2hrs today amongst other things, and combined with yesterday’s workout and today’s, my legs officially hate me… but it was so sunny and mild out today I couldn’t resist!

Getting ready to have some Japanese curry and rice for dinner. I subbed in black oyster mushrooms for the normal meat added to the dish and am quite happy with how it turned out!

SotD EL Beyond Paradise, for the hyacinth note and the CP. About a month ago, I notice two hyacinth bulbs I had meant to plant last fall were sprouting on a shelf in my garage. I took no action for another week, and then felt bad and just half-planted them in a pot of my over-wintered porch plants. Low and behold those bulbs shot out a mass of white roots, so I covered them with more dirt and now they have grown flowers and one is blooming. I love Beyond Paradise, but I am taking Fragrantica’s word that the sweet floral is hyacinth.

It’s funny, I’ve never smelled hyacinth in Beyond Paradise. I like BP a lot, but the best hyacinth I’ve smelled to date is Jo Malone’s Blue Hyacinth, which is photorealistically like an actual blue hyacinth.
