Rabbit rabbit rabbit! Welcome to February. It's also Monday and National Freedom Day. Birthdays: Clark Gable, Langston Hughes, Muriel Spark, Rick James. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm taking early community project points with Hermès Kelly Caleche.
Reminder: on 2/5, for National Grapefruit month, wear a fragrance with grapefruit; extra credit if Grapefruit (or Pamplemousse or whatever) is in the name of the scent. (This is a repeat from 2015.)
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Rabbit Hook by Yarnnakarn Ceramics ("Handmade ceramic rabbit shaped hook painted white. A functional and charming accent for walls or tabletop.") is $30 at Beautyhabit, where they also have a Rabbit Urn by the same brand for $139.
Nat Grapefruit month! Need to see if I still own a vintage CSP Pamplemousse (CSP used to have really cool packaging in the 90s).
Today will be Eau Premiere for the last round of snow removal for this particular storm. We got about a foot on top of an existing 4 or 5 inches…looks like Siberia out there.
Wow! So far we only have about 4 inches? They’re still calling for more, we’ll see.
Eau Premiere is gorgeous.
Good grief that’s a lot of snow! You smell wonderful.
Dang, that’s a bunch of snow! Any of it lake effect, or it is all Nor’Easter?
I remembered my rabbits when I got up at 2am for a real coke and two Tylenol.
Vaccine left me with low level fatigue and headache for last three days. Small price to pay.
Coffee and an English muffin.
Then post shower some Replica coffee to keep cosy at my desk.
If you are stuck in snow and cold, stay safe!
I hope you feel 100% better soon!
And I was up at 5 trying all the local vaccine sites, again, to see if I could get an appt for my husband. So yes, seems a very small price to pay from my vantage point! But of course hope you feel better and hope you are not exhausted all day.
right now it seems that you can only get appointment for the second shot. At least in LA. I was lucky and am grateful.
I managed to snag one last week but it was 2+ hours away, and you can only get the 2nd shot in the same place, so he declined. I will keep at it!
Hope you feel better soon!
Sending get better vibes – but also congrats!
Hope you’ll get that missed lifting session in soon, too! What a relief to have the vaccine over with!
So glad you’re vaccinated but sorry to hear of it’s effects. Hope you’re 100% soon.
Rayleighblue got me into collecting grapefruit scents. 🙂 I’ll have enough different samples and decants to last for a week at least. Plus I have a couple of bottles of fragrances with grapefruit notes. I’ll smell of citrus deliciousness when I get the chance to dab or spray some of those fragrances on during the week. 😀
Looking forward to hearing what you like. Grapefruit is not one of my good notes.
I remember when you started your “Grapefruit Project”. Did you ever find a favorite?
I liked Pamplemousse and Pampelune (sp?). Also I liked the 4711 Grapefruit and Pink Pepper a lot. 7 Virtues “sweetie grapefruit” and basil was nice, I thought. Atelier Cologne Pomelo Paradis is really up there for fragrances I like…
Oh, and I have a little bottle of Demeter Pink Grapefruit, because of course I do. LOL!
I am never going to remember to say my rabbits, and I am at peace with that.
I’m wearing Epidor by Lubin today – I decided to focus on decants for the next little while. Smelling like late summer on a cold, rainy day.
I don’t remember very often either!
I love to smell like summer in the winter.
Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit! ???
We are in the middle of a Nor’easter! Tons of snow already on the ground and super high winds. So grateful to be working from home.
Wearing Chanel Coco, which is perfect to keep myself warm and cheerful!
Happy Monday and happy February, everyone! ?
You smell wonderful! So glad to hear you are safe and warm. ?
Thank you, Nancy!
Coffee and hot soup is saving the day!
We’re twins today. I’m also wearing Chanel Coco while working from home and watching the snow pile up to the 24 inches they have predicted we’ll have by tomorrow.
Drinking Snowflake loose leaf from Georgia Tea Co. for obvious reasons.
I had never heard of rabbit rabbit rabbit. Learning from this community already!
Hello twin! We smell terrific!
Stay warm and safe! It is very tough here in NY, especially with the very high winds. I hope this is the only bad storm of the season. I want to think Spring will arrive soon!
I love my new bottle of Coco and it is very cheery – you all smell wonderful. Here’s to no power outages and a good snow day for all you folks in the Northeast!
Thank you! Glad you are enjoying your new bottle of Coco. Isn’t gorgeous!
Crossing fingers we don’t lose power. It is pretty bad here.
Perfect for a wintry day! You smell wonderful.
Thank you, KellyC!
Please stay safe pl67!
Thank you, Lillyjo!
Glad to hear that you were working from home!
I’ve moved on from samples to discovery sets. First up is Gallivant Berlin, which is a grapefruit scent, at least when first applied. I actually have enough fragrances with grapefruit to do the CP for a week. Yea!
I’ve yet to meet a grapefruit I love, but I said that for a long time about vetiver…then I met Vetiver Oriental….
Chant d’Arômes
Snow ❄️ Day for kids and Mr L is working from home. It’s a full house
I remembered by rabbits ?
Tea was Marco Polo , but now making an almond milk cappuccino. I stayed up late to finish a book I was reading and now dragging this morning. It was worth it
You smell wonderful!
Waiting out a blizzard. Yesterday as the snow began, I spotted a fox outside the window. I do not live in a rural area, but there was no mistaking the creature. My family gathered at the window to watch it hunt a squirrel. Then the fox started to stare back at us, staring back at it.
Then as the snow gathered, and ominous warnings about power lines began to be broadcast. I spent an hour last night trying to reassemble the emergency hook up for a CPAP machine, because the collection of extension chords which I had carefully prepared last time the potential of a storm electric lost had somehow been separated, and distributed elsewhere. I hope this proves unnecessary.
SOTD is Lilac A Day, which was meant as a counter to the weather, but actually, in its creamy way turns out to be a cold weather cozy scent.
Thanks for the tip yesterday on the old Elena article in the New Yorker. It dates back to2005, which I believes predates my obsession with scent. It also was at the cusp of the explosion of the perfume world, and focuses on Hermes’ attempt to become a competitor to Channel, and the development of Sur Le Nil.
A fox was spotted in Amsterdam a few weeks ago!
https://nos.nl/artikel/2364364-verdwaalde-vos-wandelt-door-centrum-van-amsterdam-op-zoek-naar-vrouwtje.html
Article is in Dutch but there are pics and a video.
Yay…Rise of the Fox! ?
Boy does that fox look unhappy.
Yup, poor thing.
Glad he was caught by animal rescue and set free again somewhere far away from the city.
Love your fox story!
Brrr wintry mix here in The Netherlands. This morning there were lots of car acccidents due to slippery/icy roads.
But the train to my new job (a.k.a. the pick up point for my phone and laptop) was on time!
SotD is Hinoki.
I just close my eyes, open the window and feel the cold air and i imagine I am in snowy woods ?❄️instead of my dreary home office. ?
I think I need to cosy up this room. I need better lighting or maybe a candle. And some plants.
I hope all went well for the first day of your new job! In my experience, if you were able to pick up the laptop and you had a working account, that’s a successful first day. 🙂
So true ?
And yes my account was working.. “I e-mail therefore I am” ?
😀
you smell lovely.
???hadn’t said a word since I got up this morning, so 10am rabbits it was! Best of luck to everyone weathering the Northeaster and hope you’re feeling tops by now, Robin!
I have no grapefruit fragrances, so free association has put me in my Viktoria Minya custom that has a nice tangy blackcurrant instead.
Breakfast was an orange and an English muffin topped with half a smashed avocado dusted with Berbère spice and sea salt, and I’m on my second coffee already.
Ohhhh, neat. I’ll try Berbere on avocado toast. I’ve never thought to do that! My favorite way to use Berbere is on cooked carrots with some butter and brown sugar. Thanks for the inspiration!
Oooh now I know how I’m doing my carrots tonight now! Love this plan, thank you!
You’re must welcome! ☺️
I feel normal today, thanks!
Good news, Robin!
Happy Monday all! I totally forgot about the rabbits and the weekly project. I have lots of grapefruity scents, so will participate tomorrow for sure.
I’m playing the high/low game today: Pinrose Gilded Fox on my wrists and Coromandel in my elbow crooks. Trying to find some interplay between the cocoa in GF and the white chocolate In Coromandel. I’m sure we’ve done a cp like this in the past.
Thanks y’all, for the good wishes yesterday. I’m not totally up to par, but I’m getting there! ❤️
Well, trying to think if we’ve done a similar cp. Might have to go through the lists.
Glad you’re feeling better!
I awoke at 3, tossed and turned and stressed and was just drifting back to sleep at 5:15 when the smoke alarm in our bedroom began to chirp. So my first words were #%$&@# rather than rabbit x 3. (Hopefully that won’t bring any more bad luck!) Ugh, Monday!
We don’t have the snowy weather so many of you are getting, but it’s still cold and gray and rainy so I am joining PL67 in Coco today.
Ugh, I’m so sorry! I don’t know why those things always go off in the middle of the night. It’s happened to us, too. I hope you can catch a catnap sometime today. ?
We are alarm twins today. Our fire alarm went off at 4:15 AM and with just over 1 hour left until our normal wake up time, both my husband and I were up and searching the house for a fire. No fire, of course. I mean, I’m glad there was no fire but what is it with these various alarms always going off at the worst times and for no apparent reason? Maybe a low battery?
You smell great in Coco, of course ?
Thanks! I know, right? And my husband replaced the batteries this weekend so if it was unhappy with something, why couldn’t it have gone off right away instead of waiting a full day and going off so early? And why is it unhappy anyway? However, if I had been asleep all night before that, I’m sure I would not have been quite so upset.
How old are your smoke alarms?
That smoke alarm chirp is so annoying, as is the difficulty in making it stop. Why doesn’t the battery easily fit into the casing? What’s up with that?
And another thing–it’s 2021 and we can’t make one that also flashes so you can tell which one it is that needs changing?? We have a fairly open, large house with lots of smoke alarms. They echo through the house and it’s sometimes pretty hard to tell which are the problem children. Okay. I’ll stop complaining now!
Yes!! They always go off in the wee hours of the morning, then it’s a guessing game to find the culprit. Super annoying.
It does make one wonder why the batteries don’t start making a fuss at, say 2pm.
We recently changed out a battery in a smoke detector, only to find out that the “new” battery wasn’t! It was an old one that had accidentally been put back in with the new ones.
Have you met my hubby? He has that same play! I put old batteries into a remote and he had the nerve to say that I wasn’t clicking it properly. Um, what? Then he brought out the battery tester and confirmed they were nearly dead.
That’s how we figured out that second battery was kaput… brought out the voltmeter/battery tester. It’s one of Mr. Jalapeno’s handiest gadgets.
Grrrr the alarm chirp drives me crazy! You smell great though!
Twins! We smell wonderful!
Histoires de Parfums 1828
Barqs, you always smell wonderful.
Thank you ?! So do you !
Not much grapefruit in my wardrobe (that I’m aware of) but it was a grapefruit scent sample that sent me down the rabbit hole in the first place, so I’ll save that for Friday.
Goal for this week is to thunk samples. I have so so so many that I haven’t even tested once. Will work on killing some that are almost used up. Commando at the moment, but will report back later.
I have such a huge stack of samples I haven’t even tested yet. Good luck!!
Went with Les Indemodables Cuir de Chine on the right (now thunked) and Iris Perle (from the same house) on the left (one more wearing until thunk).
Woke up in vintage no 22 edt and now in Deneuve edt. When I get off at 6 today, I will be off for two whole days. I will be getting caught up on some stuff and relaxing.
yay 🙂
Yay for being off and for smelling amazing!
Enjoy your time off!
Here come the February rabbits! I hope my birthday month will be a good one.
Starting the week with Hermes L’Ombre des Merveilles. Borrowed from my mom. I really like the clear smokiness that it has.
I have to retry L’Ombre again…the bottle is nice though.
I need to retry that one, too, when the world opens up. I tried it in Nordstrom when it launched and liked it a lot, but when so much time goes by, I always question whether my tastes have changed.
I ???’d just past midnight last night (was up late reading) and again when I woke up this morning (because I’m not sure it counts if you say it when you haven’t actually slept yet), so I should be set! Scentless so far, but post-shower I might copy Robin and go with Kelly Caleche – it’s time I retested that one.
It seems to me it counts if you say it counts….there can be no authority to make the rules in cases like these 🙂
Aedes Perlagonium, sample thunk! I think I have no grapefruit scents at all anymore. Happy Monday, everyone. Robin, did you find a vaccine appointment for your husband?
No, and I think it was a stupid day to get up early since all the shots probably got cancelled today anyway (because of the snow), so who knows if they released more appts? Anyway, I will keep trying.
Update: now we have two. One is right by our house but not til mid March. The other is 3 hours away, 2 weeks from now. I am going to keep trying! But PA is a mess, it is ridiculous how many hours I have devoted to this.
I have a friend trying to arrange vaccination appointments for her elderly parents in Michigan and she’s saying it’s basically a full-time job calling around and refreshing internet pages trying to get things sorted. Glad you got appointments in any case, and hopefully if better time/location slots come up you can snag them!
I hope your friend found something…her elderly parents probably should be ahead of my husband.
Snow days seem to be gone forever as our school district implement “remote instruction days” last year, even before the pandemic. So no fun for the kids today despite a nice layer. I did get a nice shoveling workout, though. No points for my “mini Monday” which is Fendi by Fendi, indeterminate age.
I know some NST’ers already discussed this, but I want to go on record as being truly pained to think that children cannot have snow days anymore. I was the kid who L I V E D for school to be cancelled (for any reason). My last day of any type of class was decades ago, and I still can feel the joy of a “school is closed” announcement. I defer to the wisdom of teachers, but honestly I hope remote learning plans fall flat once Covid is under control!
Snow days were always magical. Our school district started moving away because a couple of years ago there was a huge kerfuffle over the makeup days added to the end of the calendar in June. Apparently people scheduled all sorts of camps and trips for those days and then were horrified to find out that there would be school on those days (duh). We now try to avoid that at all costs, between losing the traditional Presidents Day long weekend and using “remote days”. So I don’t expect them to come back. My son is a junior – but he would still enjoy a sled riding day!
I went to a private school and remember vividly lamenting most snow days as the school codes were announced on radio. Almost every public school would be closed… But mine, smack in the middle of all those districts using the same roads, would still be open! (AND that meant my mom had to rearrange her schedule to drive us instead of us taking the bus, since our local school district would cancel those). I really cherished the few snow days that were called for us!
My brother and I were talking about snow days during one of our recent phone calls. They were a rare event for us, since school was open unless either: a) the furnace broke down, or b) 12 inches or more of snow fell.
Wearing Musc Ravageur, locked and loaded for Monday, really wishing I could drink coffee in the morning. The cold really brings out the spice in the MR I think.
You’ve given up coffee? Or just morning coffee?
Unfortunately my stomach can’t handle it in the morning – but sometimes I can get away with a cup after work.
Late reply, but gotcha!
I have a bottle of In Love Again, which starts with an explosion of grapefruit, somewhere. In the box marked Can Live Without, I expect, but I don’t even know where that is, because I have too much stuff. I’ll have to hunt that down for Friday.
But I’m wearing a healthy smudge of Lush Ectoplasm solid, which is just a barrage of brilliant citrus notes, including grapefruit. It’s tremendous. They make a body spray now, I see.
Also, I am drinking a glass of Fresca, which is perhaps my favourite beverage in the entire world. So it’s just all grapefruit all the time today (which is ironic, because I can no longer consume actual grapefruit due to an attack of kidney stones last September).
Clinks glasses: Fresca is so tasty and my lemming wants a glass but it is so icky I am not going to stop at the store today.
OMG – this sounds gorgeous. I already have Avocado Co-wash body spray and Calacas – but if this ever makes it to South Africa…
I used to adore Fresca! And always thought ILA was fun but I guess I can live without it too since I never did buy it.
Smell Bent has a perfume called 1999 that’s described as smelling like grapefruit Fresca. I have a mini and have it in contention for a wearing this week.
Another night of no sleep for me. I rabbited everytime I woke up, so if you forgot, I have you covered.?
I have to make a stinky phone call, and am procrastinating.
Pretending it’s spring in Grand Bal. This only comes in 4oz, which is stupid.
Stay safe my friends!?
So sorry about no sleep, but thanks for sharing your rabbits, I always forget. Good luck with the phone call.
Sorry for your lack of sleep. Courage for the phone call.
Your perfume ( I had to look it up) must be pretty.
I’ll take one of your extra rabbits, thank you very much. I hope your phone call went well!
Thanks for covering me with the rabbits. I forgot.
Wishing you a good night sleep tonight.
I’m claiming one of your ???. I totally missed it today even though I was awake before the crack of dawn.
Hope your phone call was less painful than you expected!
I hope that you made it through your unpleasant phone call, and got the results you wanted from it!
Rabbits done a little past midnight! I think I shall pull out the winter citrus fragrances. On Friday I will enjoy the one grapefruit to rule them all, Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Pamplelune, I love grapefruit soap and I do not think I have a bar right now. I will check the soap stash.
Ha, ha: maybe it will take Guerlain to enthrall me to grapefruit scents!
When will I learn? Do not watch various YouTube videos before going to bed…it’s a rabbit hole that, despite wearing blue light reading glasses, tends to keep me up. Had to get back up to read until about 3 am. I feel fine, though. And no rabbits.
Sycomore from the sample score yesterday. I tend to like my vetiver more bright than woodsy, though.
Need to run buy a small bottle of dry white wine for my bolognese. Recipe calls for about a 3-4 hour cooking time. So, I’ll start it about 1 pm. Seemed like a good idea on a snowy day…
I love vetiver but wasn’t able to get on the Sycamore wagon – or on the Vetiver Extraordinaire…
Snowy days are excellent for hours-long cooking projects.
I loooooove grapefruit in perfume… but it’s a summer note for me. All my grapefruit scents are packed away in the basement. So I think I’ll do a Serge week… though it looks like I could do two Serge weeks…! SOTD is Ambre Sultan. I smell warm and cozy; just right for the weather, we are socked in foggy waiting for rain later today.
I could do two Serge weeks as well. And I hate grapefruit.
I’m a grapefruit in summer person as well. I can access mine but I’m saving for my “different perfume every day” project – I will wear on hot days.
I don’t have any grapefruit “solinote” perfumes at all. But I’ve liked most of the ones I’ve tried.
Scent: Started the day in Hermes Pamplemousse Rose, and have reapplied. It’s not sticking around for me today, but it’s great while it lasts.
Candle: Root Candles – Hosta
Tea: Upton Lemon Drop
Reading: Lab Girl by Hope Jahren
Pamplemousse Rose is so beautiful!
I liked Lab Girl a lot!
I’m not sure I have any grapefruit perfumes (will wait to see what y’all are coming up with), so I’m in Le Lion today and a bit grumpy because my sleep was cut short by a (false) fire alarm this morning.
And no coffee, because gastritis. Drinking lots of herbal tea to keep warm. It’s a Monday for sure.
Stay warm and safe all of you in the snow storm’s path.
Sorry about that fire alarm. A flock of crows cawing at one another woke me this morning, just at daybreak. Not my favorite way to start the day.
Thank you Tiffanie and I hope your day is looking up!
Hope your day and the gastritis improve.
Thank you Aurora. It does improve when I avoid caffeine but since I like coffee and tea so much I don’t always take my own (medical) advice ?
I stopped drinking coffee several years ago and have not had any stomach pains since. Oddly enough tea does not bother me at all. Does it help at all if you do not drink black tea?
Not necessarily. Some green teas bother me as much and sometimes even more than black. Especially Japanese green tea (except for Genmaicha which is half rice). It’s a delicate balance I have to keep because I’m not ready to completely quit any of these. So I pick my battles.
I’m not sure which is worse – gastritis or abstaining from coffee! You have my sympathy.
Thank you Merlin ?
Feel better soon, Adanst!
Thank you PL67, I’m really ok, did not mean to sound so whiny. I blame it on insufficient sleep ?
Sorry to hear about the fire alarm malfunction!
Thank you Jalapeno! I certainly made up for the previous night’s inadequate sleep (went to bed very early) and feel much better today.
I hope you’re staying warm!
I’m sure I could find some grapefruit somewhere, but don’t have the energy to look that deeply through the cabinet.
I’m trying to get work done, but am getting quite distracted by the jack-hammering crew working in front of my next door neighbor’s house. It’s noisy, and it’s making my house shake. Almost worse than the perpetual leaf blowers in my hood, but I feel like I’m coping with it better, because it’s a temporary situation.
It’s definitely time to go make more coffee, and lavishly spritz something wonderful!
Hope you got that coffee and the jack hammering is over & done with for the day!
Wearing Behold, Patchouli today and smelling fine! 🙂
You smell great!
Also wanted to see if anyone has tried fragrances from the following houses please…no affiliation…stumbled upon Jousset looking at Luckyscent and Happyland on Fragrantica…debating buying samples but Kevin’s article is still so fresh in my head!!!?ehaeheh
https://www.joussetparfums.com/
https://www.happylandfragrances.com/shop
I have not and I’m right there with you regarding Kevin’s article. It’s haunting me ?
It’s haunting me too but what choice do we have? 🙂 sampling seems like a necessary evil…how else can we know the good from the bad? It’s quite philosophical really. 😉
?
She-ra, check out tltg reviews on YouTube. He has a ton of happyland reviews and I believe offers a coupon code in the description box.
Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!
Sampling DSH’s Couverture d’Hiver. If you’re curious, here’s a good review :
https://colognoisseur.com/new-perfume-review-dsh-perfumes-couverture-dhiver-chocolate-snow/
I was hoping for something quiet to suit the lovely muffled quality that comes with heavy snow, but this isn’t hitting the spot. I find the ozonic notes to be too heavy on my skin, and the white chocolate and woody notes to be buried underneath it. If you’ve tried Demeter’s Snow, this is somewhat similar although more complex. I love many DSH perfumes, but I’m finding that I prefer her florals over those with gourmand notes.
Hoping everyone in the path of the storm stays safe and continues to have power!
I bought one of the DSH gourmand discovery sets..no. 1 Vanilla and am 0 for 4 samples that I have tried so far. I do see lots of positive comments on the house here but, in retrospect, don’t think they were for the gourmands.
Bummer! Well, if you ever stray from vanilla then perhaps you’ll find something of hers in another category that you love.
Did you ever change your SOTD, or were you stuck with it?
Hiya Jalapeno! ?♀️
I didn’t exactly change it, as I wasn’t sure if the latter stages would be interesting. It’s still powering on as an ozone bomb! I did add three more samples – Mimosa Gold which was lovely but short-lived, Trimerous and St. Paul’s or sumthin’ which were both not for me.
I’m hopelessly out of touch with the community projects. Did not rabbit. Well, I am wearing a lovely perfume however, which is the most important thing. SOTD is Divine, their first offering. The edp today. Greatly enjoying how I smell, just one of the few things that bring a little variation in my days. No snow here, but fairly cold, misty weather. Did manage an hours walk early this afternoon and very nearly fell asleep behind my computer afterwards ???
You smell divine! 🙂
Excellent perfume choice, and you smell wonderful.
Can you describe Divine a little bit? I’ve heard someone else mention it here and I was thinking about ordering a sample at some point. Thanks!
It’s a very classical perfume with some hints of fruit. Luca Turin calls it a powdery, buttery floral-animalic.
The fruit is overripe.
http://perfumeposse.com/2016/08/18/divine-edp-divine-review/
Thank you Austenfan! That could go either way for me but I’m intrigued enough that I will order a sample when I get a chance.
I haven’t looked at their website in a while but they used to sell a sample set.
Gorgeous scent!
SotD = Iris Ukiyoe
IU because Koyel mentioned it last week, and because it’s a gentle way to begin a new week and a new month. I remembered to rabbit x 3 before my feet hit the floor this morning. Hope that’s a positive sign I’ve got my head on straight. 😉
Spent this weekend tidying up around the house, found a $25 Amazon gift card I’d forgotten. Good things come in threes, as my mum sometimes says, so I’ll be on the lookout for two more, lol.
Have a wonderful Monday, fragrant friends.
Nice, hope the next two surprises are even more fun!
thank you, Robin! 😀
Hurray for the found $$$$! That’s such an awesome feeling.
yup! 🙂 I was always thrilled to find a forgotten 20 in a coat pocket.
You smell great !
thanks, Barqs! Iris Ukiyoe always makes me smile. 🙂
It’s -2 outside…Shalimar.
Sundance weekend update:
Wild Indian – a harrowing story about two Ojibwe men who meet again thirty years after covering up a murder when they were children. Michael Greyeyes and Chaske Spencer are both fantastic. Dark and bold, and I almost never say this but I actually wish it were longer.
In the Earth – Annihilation meets folk horror. Has some wonderfully intense individual scenes but it doesn’t add up to the whole that makes any sense.
Land – A woman (Robin Wright) isolates herself in a remote cabin after the death of her husband and young son. Pretty by the numbers but she gives a great performance.
Prisoners of the Ghostland – Sion Sono’s latest is a spaghetti western meets Mad Max meets feudal Japan dystopia about a bank robber (Nicolas Cage) who is sent on a dangerous rescue mission in exchange for his freedom. It’s gonzo nonsense from start to finish, but great fun for Cage fans.
Coming Home In the Dark – A bleak, bleak, triple bleak New Zealand thriller, in which a family is kidnapped by a pair of drifters with an unknown grievance. Very intense, hard to watch, but I love a pulse pounder.
Maybe for today, something a little lighter.
Even after seeing all the seasons of House of Cards, Wright is still Buttercup to me.
And I mean that as the highest compliment.
Of course it’s a compliment! I saw the documentary You Can Not Kill David Arquette recently (not sundance, but hysterical) and he complains about getting typecast after Scream. I’d think most people would kill to have an iconic role like that they’ll be known forever for. It beats playing the victim of the week on Law and Order: SVU, I’m sure.
Thanks so much for the incisive reviews! Triple dark does indeed sound VERY dark… I hope you found something lighter and brighter to counter-balance 🙂
Hitting play on what is hopefully a sweet coming of age story 🙂
Oh – let us know how that one goes! I actually always look for dark movies, but then I like uplifting scents so go figure 😀
Thanks Dorsey, keep ’em coming!!
You bet!
Rabbit rabbit rabbit! I’m grapefruit-adjacent (well, botanically speaking) in Seville A l’Aube. And now that I’m thinking about grapefruit my mouth is watering for it! I used to get these amazingly sweet Oro Blanco grapefruits in my CSA basket when I lived in the Sierra foothills; wish I could find them around here.
I love grapefruit too…and I’ve probably never had an amazing one since they don’t grow near me.
I dislike grapefruit so I’m sitting this one out, in MdO Musc today.
I like grapefruit but it usually turns sour milk on me.
Ewwwwwwwwwwww! ?
I get cat pee.
Those darn rabbits hopped away this morning before I could call to them…Like many others, I did not sleep too well last night. But now, working from home as we have a genuine blizzard going on outside. Wearing Salome since I’m at home, and it’s bringing warmth on a cold day. Sending the kid out sledding soon.
You smell fantastic!
Rabbit Rabbit Rabbit!
1) We survived January! Huzzah!
2) SOTD: Prada’s Iris Cedre (dabber bottle) after a sweaty workout. Just a perfect pick me up after a HIIT routine!
2a) Am really pushing myself for now on because I found out that Cecily Tyson did pushups well into her 80s. Like, wow!
Pushups when at 80+ y/o?
Darn, i feel lazy ?
Right?
Like she was doing 100 pushups a day into her 80s! No more complaints!
Agree, makes me feel suuuuuper lazy haha.
That is very inspiring! Not sure if it’s enough to get me out of my seat though…
I’’m sorry to bring up old threads but I believe you were talking about journals you’ve really liked? If it was you, could you name them again?
And dang, Cecily Tyson!
1) No problem! For a long time I used PeopleSystems UnCalendar Lifestyle edition, an undated journal with TONS of space and room for creating a bullet journal. I found this system useful while in college, when I had my business and when transitioning from one career (film) to another (tech). This year, I have two specific goals, so I am using Best Self Self Journal, which has more a more focused 13 week timeline. It does all the day and week division for you so that you can be on top of your goal or project. For example, if you goal was to buy a house/apartment or gain a short term skill, this journal would be EXTREMELY useful in keeping you focused on that goal.

2) My goal is to be like Ernestine Shepard, who is STILL out there lifting weights, eating clean and being strong at 80!
Thanks for the links, I made a note of them. I was also intrigued by your earlier post on the topic but didn’t note it down at the time.
I hope it helps!
Thanks so much!
I’m working on trying to start eating clean and taking care of myself properly. Thanks for giving me some suggestions for inspiring role models!
Got up at 5:30am and rabbited in a desultory way because I wanted to stay in bed.
In Etro Messe de Minuit which I like equally in warm weather . It has a crypt aspect. I wonder whether I wear it more than Encens Flamboyant.
You smell wonderful! I recently got a full bottle of Messe de Minuit that I wiil open for the Splitmeet. I find it to be mysterious and inviting at the same time. Beautiful scent!
Glad you love it too and great description.
Crypt aspect doesn’t sound like it’s for me.
Ah, like a fragrant, incensey crypt but I seem to recall you’re not an incense fan.
Funny, but I don’t get much crypt from Messe de Minuit. Maybe my sample is new-ish, and that has been toned down?
“… that NOTE has been toned down”.
Yes, it’s much less crypt-like in the current formulation.
Yes, and I miss the crypt! I like but don’t love my bottle that’s a few years old.
Rabbit rabbit! I’m wearing a lab on fire freckled and beautiful. At first I thought I didnt need a whole bottle but smelling it again, I might be mistaken. I wish a lab on fire would release all their scents in those little bottles
Ooh I haven’t sniffed that one but like the name lol. I’ll have to look it up.
Its really nice! It smells like honeysuckle and cookies. It makes me think of perfume for babies 🙂
??? because I forgot to rabbit ???. February snuck up on me with the snow storm. Yep, it is still going and I am afraid to even try to open the outer door but with the wind, I hope the accumulation isn’t terrible. I may need to clear my deck as the snow has piled up!
SOTD = MAC Velvet Teddy EDP
Musky honey tobacco vanilla ?. It’s from 2016 and I don’t recall anyone bringing it up (any MAC perfumes) in 2020. Do you have this or any other MAC perfumes?
https://www.instagram.com/p/CKwr756h_cR/?igshid=1uo37kk93idlo
In other news, I read the comments to The New York Times Magazine article on loss of smell. Someone suggested that eating a toasted wedge of orange rolled in brown sugar seems to alleviate and cure loss of smell – fascinating!
I’ve never tried any MAC perfumes, but I’ve seen Velvet Teddy get named as a cheaper alternative to TF Tobacco Vanille. Is there much truth to that?
It does bear a resemblance to Tobacco Vanille but you have to add a wallop of honey.
I have a sample of Velvet Teddy somewhere- need to try it!
I heard that about the orange too and have been wanting someone I know to try it haha. Hope the snow doesn’t get too bad.
I think Snopes has a thing on the burnt orange thing.
I used to have Air of Style, and really liked it. It was a little spicy. It wasn’t part of the shadescents line, I think it came after but was discontinued.
I hope the snow doesn’t accumulate any more for you!
Still snowing for me, too. But I’m pretty sure that I won’t have anywhere near the snow total that you do.
I’m a crappy NSTer. I always lurk and read and smell great but either forget to comment or it’s so late I figure no one will read it haha. Regardless, I wore Aura on Friday and smelled fab. That one is growing on me. Then Saturday I wore Lonesome Rider and yesterday Dodo. The Dodo wasn’t doing it for me. I loved it when I first wore last year but there was a note I wasn’t loving this time.
Today I’m in Genre which always hits the spot!
Aww, I do the same lurking and reading a little through the day but not making time or forgetting to comment. So you’re not alone!
We read …
Aww thank you! I just always feel like if it’s late here it’s REEEALLY late in other places haha.
Crappy Nster made me laugh!
I read at night, but might not always comment.
I really like Aura!
Someone will almost always be around to read the late, late comments. And then there are people like me, who go back to the previous day’s comments, to see if they’ve missed anything.
I’m a west-coaster so I also usually read the posts late. Nice to know I’m not alone, but like you I don’t always comment.
I’m reading! I have very similar NST habits, too. Post late. Read a lot, don’t always comment, sometimes feel bad for not, especially when people are going through tough times.
A lurker? I’d rather think of you as a loyal reader.
It’s 7:22pm PST and here I am reading. 🙂
Checking in at 11:25 pm!
I read late, or I often read in the morning over coffee on the next day before the new post goes up.
Thunked my sample of Rose Magnetic by Essential Parfums to start off grapefruit week. It has top notes of grapefruit and lychee, which are definitely present and otherwise is quite similar to Stella. A fruity, woody rose. It fit well for today since I used B&BW Rose shower gel this morning.
I know it has many fans but Stella is a bit staid to my nose. I am interested in trying Essential Parfums though…
I should have noted that I haven’t smelled Stella in many years. But I read someone else making the comparison on Fragrantica and that seemed to stack up with my memory.
I think that’s why I like Stella. It’s just a clean, fresh rose. Easy to wear. As you say, staid. A good description.
That sounds so nice!
Stella didn’t work for me at all, and I never could figure out why.
I never remember to rabbit…but I’m not superstitious. Today is rain all day and I wasn’t in the mood for grapefruit, so I’m wearing MadHat Santal. My homemade ice cream turned out really well and I might try something with mix-ins when this batch is gone.
Glad your ice cream worked out well! It’s fun once you find a base that works.
I think I’ve remembered once. But, I never knew about the rabbit thing until I read about it here. Just not part of my family lore.
Oh yay, what flavor did you make?
Plain vanilla for my very first batch. When it’s gone I think I’ll make chocolate malt.
Drooling over the thought of chocolate malt.
Ditto on drooling.
Very late reply, but now I’m drooling 2 days later 🙂
Happy Monday and snow day to all in the path of the storm!
My SOTD is Chloe Nomade Absolu.
Not sure if I’ll attempt the grapefruit CP this week, I’ve had a few scents with grapefruit go very cat-pee on my skin! But I do have a sample of one I might try.
It was sort of peaceful here with the snow! But we did not get as much as some places.
I don’t have much grapefruit in perfume form — funny, considering how much I love it. So today I’m burning my grapefruit candle and wearing an obscure Italian honeysuckle scent I picked up off the sale counter probably 15 years ago at Essenza in Seattle. This combination is in honour of my late, long lamented Honeysuckle Grapefruit candle that I bought at Fresh in Boston in the late ’90s — my favourite candle ever. (I do like my current P.F. Candle Sweet Grapefruit candle, though.)
So, uh, in the end, I guess a tour of a number of the places I’ve lived in the last 25 years. 🙂
No snow here, just rain. So much rain. I really can’t complain, as I live in a place where it’s basically spring year-round. The snowdrops have started blooming, along with a couple of trees on my walks.
Oh, I should burn my salta candle this week! I do love a good grapefruit candle.
Grapefruit candles are so great!
Using up the last of my smallish decant of Cuir Beluga. Almost finished my bowl of samples, which feel like an accomplishment. Taking victories where I can…
Hey, I think that’s a huge accomplishment!
So I am a little sad I never bought Ateliers Pomelo Paradis which is no longer available where I live. It seemed a waste since I already had Pamplelune, but PP might have been just a little more joyful! I do seem to remember that celebratory opening fading too fast though…. In any case, I am currently soaked in Montale’s Red Oud which has had me in its fiery grip for more than a week and shows no sign of letting go any time soon….
Does anyone else keep seeing a cute little pig when they look at that ‘rabbit’ hook?
Yeah, it kinda has a piglet nose. Lol.
At first, I saw a deer without antlers.
We could turn it into a rorshach test. And yes, I am like a little piggy when it comes to food 😀
Where are you, Merlin? I have a little bit of Pomelo Paradis left in a travel spray if you’re jonesing for it
Wow Dorsey, thank you so much – but I’m in South Africa so postage would take about 3 months and there may be legality issues with perfume in the post. Otherwise I would take you up on that offer… You know, I was in Toronto a few years ago and I kept looking for a Pomelo travel spray – so many other Ateliers got one but the Sephora there never got the PD!
There’s only about 2 more decent wears left in this one so probably not worth it then. Oh well. I remember getting this in a set from Sephora, it was 4ml x8 different scents or something like that. My favorite was Mandarine Glaciale and that one’s long-thunked and discontinued.
No, it wouldn’t be worth it. I’m not sure if I’ve tried MG? I love, and have Orange Sanguine and Cafe Tubereuse and I should probably have got the PP. I wear OS more than CT just because I love citrus – but CT is great too. Also, I remember liking Rose Anonymie enough to drain a decant (In the days getting decants and samples from overseas was still viable). Anyway, have a good night and thanks again for the offer!
It was a a bright citrus-ginger…RIP. Have a good night 🙂
You might need a ‘small’ bottle in the future 😉
???!
It’s snowing again for me. My area had a break from the snow last night, then this morning it switched over to sleet. The snow came back around 2 this afternoon. Last time I checked outside, there was about 3 inches of snow on the ground.
I’m rather happy that I have a batch of green chili with chicken bubbling away in the crockpot. The whole house smells great as a result.
SOTD = Alien Le Gout du Parfum/A Taste of Fragrance EdP. Lillyjo’s comments about her favorite versions of Alien reminded me that I had this one!
Your chili sounds yummy and you smell great too!
Thank you lillyjo! ? I have plenty of tasty leftovers now.
You are so lucky! So far 15 inches in my area with 60mph winds. Very brutal outside and still going.
Your chilli sounds delish! Enjoy!
I’d rather have all the snow you got, instead of snow and sleet. That icy sleet layer makes things more dangerous. I have yet to see a plow in my neighborhood.
The chili was very tasty! Had a bowl of it for dinner. Definitely warming!
Sorry about ALL that snow! I won’t complain anymore because it’s usually pretty minimal compared to that. For me, it’s the wind that makes the weather and snow so unbearable.
Hope you are the sun very soon!
Hope you are *seeing* the sun very soon.
Latest forecast has this hanging around thru tomorrow.
The wind is the worst part of it. Snow is still coming down, but much less. However, the wind is unbearable. So far 18 inches in my area. The next couple of days are going to be very tough.
I hope you don’t need to go anywhere too far this week. That chicken dish sounds wonderful!
The only thing on my calendar that requires a trip to another town is Spooky kitty’s vet appointment. Things ought to be plowed clear by then. ?
Usually I make green chili with pork, but I decided to try chicken thighs instead. It worked out rather well, so I’m happy that I have another protein option.
That chili sounds fabulous. I prefer green chili. I used to be able to buy a jar of starter chili of green chile and white beans. I’d add ground turkey. Can’t find it anymore, so I will have to search recipes to make from scratch. Green chili is so fresh tasting.
Wore Jour d’Hermes edp today from my mini. It does have grapefruit listed as a note. Most of my other choices for the week will probably be similar, being grapefruit adjacent only.
I desperately am in need a haircut but my stylist had surgery a few weeks ago and is not back to work. I may have to get my hubby to give me a trim so that it’s manageable for the next while. Might need another round of ???.
I’m thinking that my perfume for Friday’s CP will be grapefruit adjacent. But I ought to go thru my sample stash and double check what’s hanging out there.
I am getting my first haircut sine July on Friday! I am very excited. 🙂
You are making me wonder if I can find my little spray of the Absolue. Lots of grapefruit.
My husband’s hair is a mess. I’ve been cutting it but it’s been a long time, amd it’s really wild. His hair person has cancelled twice recently. She might even cancel today because of leftover snow.
I’m a bit envious of the people with lots of snow. Some friends posted beautiful pictures of it on Facebook. I do remember snow days up in Michigan and at least one day for a tremendous ice storm. My brother and I skated way across town.
On the other hand, I enjoyed a lovely walk in sunshine and 64 degrees and took pictures of roses. My scent of the day was Heretic Scandalwood. Not sure why that is the title, as it seems innocuous and pleasant to me.
Not until I went to physical therapy and signed in this afternoon did I realize it was already February. I couldn’t believe it! So, no rabbits were uttered here this morning. I’m discombobulated by the mess of my backed-up kitchen sink. I’ve got a date with a plumber tomorrow. Am washing a few plates and the coffee pot in my powder room sink. Ugh to this.
So glad the plumber is scheduled!
(And jealous, of course, of your sunshine and 64)
My only grapefruit fragrance is Hermes Pamplemousse Rose and Mr. allo has appropriated it.
On a different note entirely, I found a tiny flat round bottle of vintage Diorissimo that belonged to my mother. It’s exquisite! Makes me want to go on a vintage hunt…
I have a little decant of that, courteous of a kind NSTer. I wore it back in the ‘80s. Gorgeous scent. Today’s version is too LOTV forward for me, except I think it dries down to a similar place. It doesn’t sparkle at the top the way I remember.
I think I tried a recent version not too long ago and I agree about the LOTV. The vintage dries down so beautifully, warm and well balanced. Wish I had a vat of it!
