Wednesday scent of the day 1/20

Posted by Robin on 20 January 2021 203 Comments

Hump Day, plus the International Day of Acceptance, Cheese Lovers Day and Penguin Awareness Day. Birthdays: Lead Belly, Joy Adamson, David Lynch. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Honoré des Prés I Love Les Carottes for The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Does Peter Rabbit qualify as a fairy tale or fable? I don't know, and I'm already running late.

Reminder: 1/22 will be Fairy Tale Friday. Name a favorite fairy tale or fable, and wear a perfume that fits your choice. Suggested by therabbitsflower. (Wikipedia has a decent list of fairy tales if you need some inspiration; plus see the entry for fables.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’ve always wanted to try I Love Les Carottes, but the brand is difficult to sample.

Have been in Mitsouko all week which I think qualifies for the feeling of what it must be like in a beautiful japanese fairy tale garden.

Mitsouko is my absolute number one fragrance. I love the edt, not the edp. I haven’t tried the extrait, or the parfum, but I adore the scent.

Oh 😍 I originally fell in love with the edt. But in autumn and winter I find myself drawn to the edp and use extrait on special days. Mitsouko is one of the only two scents I have in all concentrations because I love it so much.

What’s TPC? I’m in Europe if that makes a difference.

I’m sorry. TPC is a decant house here in the states. The real name is The Perfumed Court. They may do international shipping, but surely there must be decant houses in Europe.

Happy cheese lover’s day! Breakfast was toasted olive-walnut sourdough with a smear of PICANDINE Pico Goat Brie and a dab of fig preserves. Lovers of goat cheese will enjoy this. Another favorite goat cheese is Laura Chenel spreadable goat cheese.

My SOTD is SJP’s Covet. The dry down in a few hours will be so enjoyable. :)

Made BBQ Smoked salmon and asparagus for supper yesterday. I only eat oily fish such as tuna and salmon because it’s healthy, sad to say, I enjoy it. Here’s yesterday’s healthy supper. :)

SOTM is Ummagumma. Have been awake for three hours already, just finished winding a skein of yarn into a ball (really wish I’d had the yarn shop do that), and am about to take a sip of my second latte of the morning. Ah, retirement.

I don’t much care for winding either, but I prefer to do it by hand myself. It’s usually a two day project winding each skein though.

Morning, Sheri! I had a super-wiggly kiddo years ago who struggled to sit and “be good” during traditional class activities. I use yarn for science labs and demonstrations, and I had a box of random bits in storage. I started giving this boy yarn at the start of class and had him wind it into balls for me. It required both of his hands and a little attention (to make a ball and not a mess), but not so much that he couldn’t also listen to the instructions for the day. He settled into class when he was winding yarn and while I wouldn’t say he became an amazing student, it did increase his positive participation in class. I think we both really liked how it meant he wasn’t being corrected so often and reduced the stress for both of us.

A soldier has spent years in a distant land. The mission was so dangerous that orders prohibited the platoon from messages home, lest the soldier’s indentities and location be gleaned by the enemy

The soldier has now returned to the door where lived the true love not seen in years. But the door is locked. Knocks do not summon anyone to the door. The shades are drawn. The soldIer sinks to the concrete steps, and breathes deeply but can not forestall the worst thoughts:. There is a plague upon the land; has the true love been stricken?
A vibration stirs within the soldier’s breast. The soldier checks her phone; A message: But not from the true love; a merchant is offering returning veterens a 5% discount.
Still, the soldier’s senses returns. She can again use her phone. She sends a missive to the true love:
“My darling where RU? I have crossed clouds and seas, and the damned rush hour tie up by exit 17 to get to you.”
The true love texts back. “Silly Girl. Y would I b at house? NosEy Roomie still around. Waiting, where first we met.”
The soldier runs into the woods behind the house. Her love on a mossed stained rock.
The soldier breathlessly pants: “Even when standing watch in the dark of night, even in the midst of battle, you have been the air I have breathed. I bring you rare incenses to show that I have always been graced by the mystery of our love.”

The lover sighs, “Just shut up and kiss me.”

Reader, she married him. And then became a best selling romance writer. And they bought their own home and lived happily ever after.

I accidentally spilled half my sample of Le Galion’s Snob (modern formula) on my bed and hands and skirt 😳😄 i wonder what my dreams will be tonight.
I smelt apple….thats Snow White. Ha!

    Also,
I have Osmanthus Interdite on one arm and Cuir de Chine on my other.

Interdite is bit like a disney princess in the garden: beautiful, fresh and uplifting but also a bit boring after a while (on my skin it fades into a very light clean musk)

Cuir de Chine is an osmanthus as well but with the suede/leather and buttery side amped up. This scent keeps fascinating me. More like Mulan….lovely girl but clad in leather and ready to kick your butt. 😉

I found Cuir de Chine pretty fascinating as well.
It starts on me with a note of musty rough leather (not entirely pleasant I might add) and after about 1 hour the leather slowly fades and what I smell is fruit: peach, maybe apricot? Then the most gorgeous osmanthus comes through and pretty much stays until the end. Up close I think I can smell the suede facets of osmanthus but where is that sharp leather note at the beginning coming from? Very curious about that. The notes/ingredients listed mention only tobacco (in a small percentage) besides the flowers.

The notes mentioned dont paint the full picture. But thats often the case with perfume marketing, right?

With most scents from thar brand i get lots of other smells than only those printed in the booklet.

Maybe the jasmine dirties things up in Cuir de Chine? but it could be something else as well.

Received my order of Zoologist samples yesterday and I’m starting (well, minus the previous loves that made me order the full set) with Bat. It fits the CP because…something something vampires? This is the reformulated version, which they’re kind enough to note on the card. Just sprayed it on about 20 minutes ago but I love the initial burst – tropical fruit stomped on by muddy hiking boots. It looks like the original is being sold under another name now, I might have to try that one out too.

I have loved smelling all the samples I managed to get my hands on, and think they are marvelous in the first hour. After that, there’s a distinct skank that I don’t love that seems to occur in most scents from this line. My favorites to smell thus far have been Dragonfly and Elephant (so green!), oh, and Camel was really good.

The “full collection” sample set has everything EXCEPT Dragonfly. Maybe that one’s about to get reformulated too?

I tried only a couple – hummingbird, macaque, and Dodo. Loved Dodo, didn’t like m., felt eh about hummingbird.
The original bat is called “night flyer” and sold by Olympic Orchids. Very reasonable and fun sample sets there!

Love love love love: Sloth. Forewarned is forearmed, it is *challenging* about 20 minutes in. Try not to let that wet hay/chamomile defeat you! The drydown of this fragrance is the most glorious thing ever, and it truly wouldn’t be the same without that midsection.

Musk Deer followed by the original Bat (so, the one you can now get from Olympic Orchids).

I’m also intrigued by Squid and need to sample it again. Have not tested Snowy Owl yet. Have sampled almost everything else. Most are pleasant but only Musk Deer was a strong love.

In other news, I really ought to eat most of the shelf-stable and frozen foods I had bought at the beginning of COVID awareness to probably early fall. Not quite panic-buying but just not wanting to “have to” go out to the grocery. As it had turned out and continue to do so, I typically make my rounds of groceries every weekend and I have been eating all the newly-bought stuff first because why freeze a fresh item if I can eat it within a reasonable time from purchase? Anyway, it looks like I am back to having my chicken noodle soup at least once a week and then I have to decide on which of the frozen stuff to start eating (and continue to eat for a few days until I get sick of it … and I am unpredictable).

Does anyone have a similar issue with an overabundance of food?

yes, I do! I was at the grocery store last March when I was getting texts that there was going to be some serious government issued shut down and grocery stores would close – it turned out it was a rumor, but I bought a ton of diced tomato and flour, because that’s what was on the shelf – thanks for the reminder to use it up.

Mostly my spouse did this for canned goods (we don’t have a big enough freezer, and it’s full of puff pastry since Trader Joe’s carries this seasonally only and I must not run out :). He also created pantry space in the garage, which is handy, but leads to us forgetting to what we have because it’s out of view. I could probably not shop for a good 3 weeks and be fine.

Off today to take my mom to a lower back procedure. I am waiting for her to come out and I am dying to have a cup of coffee because I am falling asleep, but there is no way I can bring my mask down to even have a sip of water. I have to wait until we are back home.

I took a very early shower with a
Fresh Sea Salt bar soap from A la Maison de Provence. I love the softness and the salty marine smell of this soap. And I sprayed lavishly on L’Artisan Un Air de Bretagne to have enough energy to face the long day.
I will have a glass of wine and sushi for dinner while watching the news tonight. I need to relax and rest before I am back to my working day tomorrow.

Have a safe and healthy day, everyone! 🌻

    Ubar today.
This scent is so bright, big without being gaudy, and “proper” to me, like I should be at the opera. Maybe it’s what Christine would wear in Phantom of the Opera? Except, it doesn’t smell like an ingenue. . . maybe more like Kitty Carlisle in A Night at the Opera. Ha! So, no fairy tale points for me, but I’m good with Marx Brothers.

I spent 6 days in Nice a couple of years ago, and the Musée Biblique was my favourite, but it’s a good city for museums all round. Plus it is truly lovely. There was snow on the Alps then, and Nice itself is mostly tints of orange and red and the Mediterranean is very blue, so the colours were just stunning.

Inquiring if anyone has tried the new Guerlain L’Initial, which is a slightly reformulated version of Shalimar Parfum Initial? I am not a Shalimar fan, but this sounds quite different from the regular Shalimar, with lots of gourmand notes. My curiosity is piqued.

I recently acquired a sample and will try it soon. I happen to adore Shalimar, so you know :)

I have a sample and to me it is similar to Shalimar Initial -I can do a side by side comparison if this would help you, but to my nose its the same.

I never smelled Parfum Initial, but I read that they removed the vetiver note and added almond. Do you find it sweet, or does it smell a lot like original Shalimar?

I keep reading that as “Alitalia” – and keep going – “an airline with a scent?” and “would that really be any good?” :)

It’s fruity, but not particularly sweet, so it works for me.

Coromandel from a carded sample. In the endless, trippy, fatiguing patchouli drydown. One of Cinderella’s tiresome stepsisters would do.

EDP. Big no. I wish there was a Chanel other than No 19 I loved. :(

Oh, those carrots look delish! One thing I learned when we had a CSA membership was how much tastier those carrots were as opposed to the ones in the grocery stores. Time to hit the farmer’s markets this year?

Cold, windy, and changeable clouds here today. Brrrrrrrrrr. Glad that I pulled out some heavier wool socks today.

SOTD = Soivohle Paracelsus, from the sample stash. Dark chocolate, roses, leather, patchouli, and a bunch of other stuff in this one. No fairy tale or fable connection that I can come up with, though.

Are you closer to a larger size?

It was cold 🥶 and windy 🌬 today so I did an abbreviated walk but still got some sun.

        Ummmmmm… maybe? 😇😈

That wind just knifed through the layers I was wearing when I walked down to the mailbox this afternoon. Unpleasant!

Cuir de Lancôme, which I usually save as a “going out” scent because I find it just so beautiful. But…I decided to treat myself, even as I walked the 1.5 miles to Trader Joe’s. I may need to spritz some more for the evening.

Tired. Yesterday included some emotional outbursts, and I just became weary by the end of the day and struggled to shut down for sleep. Only way I can settle down is to pull up a book and read long enough to “reset” my brain, which I did about 2 am.

Oh I’ve moved on… I didn’t care for one of them, and just skimmed to the end. Last night I chose to read a short story. I’ve started to have a couple of books going, one of which is audio to listen while I make sandwiches each week. None are very deep.

    SotD = Eau des Merveilles

because yay for Merveilles! Today feels like a good day for EdM. I would be walking on the sand and breathing salty air if I had my way today. Alas, I do not.

Yesterday’s accidentally-overly-zealous application of POTL Luctor et Emergo left a splash on my desk and on a scarf I left on my chair. The drydown of that perfume on fabric is GORGEOUS. :)

I spent most of today wearing that scarf as close to my nose as I could while zoom meeting all day. People can get weird if you cover part of your face during a video call. Who knew? :D

they ARE :D and it makes me so happy.

EdM seems to layer nicely over the dregs of most scents. Likewise, the drydown of EdM will amp up another scent in interesting ways, even a day later!

Very late check in but SotD some of my Viktoria Minya custom. It makes me think of what Lady Cottington’s Pressed Fairy Book might smell like, with aromas of squashed cassis, flowers, pepper, sandalwood and a hint of leather.

Thank you to everyone for the anniversary wishes! This is the t-bone gluttony (Mr. Teebear’s portion, I sensibly had only half of mine):

Late post as per usual. SOTD was Confessions of a Garden Gnome, which is perfect for the CP. No gnome tales come to mind, but there must be some!
