It's Friday, and David Bowie's birthday (he would have been 74 today). Our community project for today: if you like, pick a favorite Bowie song and wear a perfume to match. Or, just wear a fragrance that you think fits with the occasion for whatever reason.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
I'm in Diorissimo for the song Changes, from the 1971 album Hunky Dory.
Reminder: on 1/15, wear a fragrance to match Ultimate Gray and/or Illuminating, Pantone's colors of the year for 2021.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2021, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Bonus track: David Bowie plays sax on All The Young Dudes (a song he wrote for Mott the Hoople), in 1992 at the benefit concert for Freddie Mercury at Wembley. With Ian Hunter, Joe Elliott, Phil Collen and Mick Ronson; apologies but you'll possibly have to sit through an ad first.
Not a song but a persona: Hermessence Brin de Reglisse makes me think of Aladdin Sane, so thin and pale and attenuated, pale greyish-lavender but with a shock of colour in it. It’s probably my favourite Hermessence. (That or Ambre Narguilé: I never can decide.)
Bowie fans who haven’t seen Adam Buxton’s hilarious Bowie parody really need to: it’s three and a half minutes of pure joy. He does all the voices, he rips co-producer Tony Visconti to shreds, and he’s an actual Bowie expert (it was his specialty subject on the British TV show Mastermind). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FODvjYoVEi8
Thank you for pointing out that parody. Its hilarious AND his Bowie voice seems spot on.
“Music for Bus Stops” ?
I’m commando this morning as I’m on my way to the hospital for a CT scan to try and diagnose some health issues I’ve been having over the past year. Feeling rather uneasy about it all. For the community project, I haven’t yet hit on the right Bowieliscious scent for the day, but I’ll do some digging when I get home…
Fingers crossed that a diagnosis is reached, and that it is something that can be treated with relative ease.
I hope things go smoothly, and that things will be okay and a diagnosed is reached. xoxo
I hope everything goes well, Isabella. Sending positive vibes.
Sending you positive vibes for a diagnosis and some action steps!
Sending positive vibes ???
Hope all goes well and you get a diagnosis ?
I hope all goes well, and that they’re able to easily treat anything they find.
Hoping for a speedy and favorable diagnosis.
Hope you get a diagnosis that is easily treated
Echoing all the wishes for a diagnosis and a successful treatment plan.
Big hugs and good luck today!
I hope it goes well for you!
Hope all goes well!
Sending you calming positive vibes for a good outcome!
Good luck to you today!
Good luck today Isabella. I hope the CT brings you some answers.?
Oh, I hope you don’t find the CT too unpleasant. I have found that the contrast fluid makes me a bit ill afterwards. Fingers crossed you get the answers you need and have a good plan moving forward!
Best wishes for the scan today, and good for you, for facing the situation and working to get answers.
I hope you’ll get the answers you’re looking for and figure out the best approach to manage whatever is diagnosed. Warm thoughts your way.
good luck today.
May you get a good diagnosis and plan of action for healing!
Adding to the positive vibes being sent your way that all goes well today.
Oh no! I hope you get a diagnosis and some future directions.
Good luck!
Fingers crossed you find the root cause to your problems and it’s something manageable. Take care!
Hope that things went well for you today, and soon you have some answers.
Belated good wishes to you, Isabella. I hope the procedure went smoothly and that you get some answers, with a good prognosis.
Bowie always seemed to me the coolest of characters, so talented and stylish and elegant. I was going to pull Velvet Rope out of the cabinet to wear for the CP, but came across Jasmin et Cigarette first.
Oh I think that works perfectly!
That’s a good one!
Yes, well played! House twin for the CP!
I’m afraid Bowie, although I have always loved his various styles, has never been on my radar as a performer. So I’m not doing the CP, but continuing on my quest to empty my samples. Today I emptied a sample of Poppy Rouge.
Yay, thunk!
Ordered a Chanel lip product a couple of weeks ago, and one of the samples included was Cuir de Russie. Wearing that paired with Bowie’s Fashion:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-z6u5hFgPk
Aaand just because there are so many on NST and it’s a great song~
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9I7U4nuR_I
SmokeyToes approves! 🙂
Great songs!!!
Putting out fire rocks!?
Among my favourite Bowie songs are Life on Mars, Starman, Ziggy Stardust and This is not America. And I love his collab with Queen, Under pressure.
But i grew up in 80s and for a while he was the China girl and Lets dance singer for me haha.
And then there was Labyrinth of course.
Bowie as the goblin king, with very big 80s hair and very tight pants ? and a huge presence (he only had like 10 minutes screen time)
So I am wearing Tyger Tyger (from a sample), cause i bet a goblin king that looks like that, smells of big white flowers, honey, leather and oakmoss. ?
Also, thank you all so much for the kind and comforting words yesterday!
This is really the best community ❤️
And here is a link to that dazzling ballroom scene ?
https://youtu.be/0nSzSfmC4MI
And Jennifer Connelly also looks amazing right? ?
yes yes !!!!
Love that video. Attractive and menacing in equal measure. Yesss, I will dance with you….
Loved Bowie in Labyrinth!!!
He lightens up most movies! No matter how small the part (like Tesla in The Prestige)
Another Labyrinth fan chiming in!
Yay!
Of course I loved Bowie in it but I also loved the MC Escher-esque architecture/sets.
I havent seen it since my teenage years and i probably will keep it that way…. A perfect memory.
Oooh oooh, I just got my partial bottle of Tyger Tyger. Your description makes me want to try it soonish.
Its good! It really lifts my mood on these grey cold winter days. ?
I think Labyrinth is what brought Bowie to my attention as a kid. Still love it!
Bowie is Labyrinth and Labyrinth is always Bowie to me!It was the first time I noticed this wonderfully eccentric person called David Bowie!Such a fun movie and memory from my childhood in the 80’s!
“You remind me of the babe”
“What babe”
Yes it made quite an impression on me.
We did not go to the movies that often, but i saw this in a theatre with a friend.
And later on we had it on VHS. We only had like 10 or 12 tapes. So we watched most movies at least 6 times ???
Scent twins! How are you enjoying it? I tried the sample today for the first time and am really into it. This one may end up on my to-buy list…
I like it a lot! Its my 2nd wear.
It starts out really loud, dont you think?
Two sprays and my husband raised his eyebrows ? (that is saying something)
But it soon settles into that snuggly honeyed soft leather… Yes its gorgeous and yes it may end up on my wish/buy list as well.?
Yes, quite loud! But if you can’t do it during lockdown, when can you? I’m also enjoying how it settles.
My husband never minds what I wear much. Very occasionally he will compliment a scent and even more rarely he will say “that’s strong” when he doesn’t like something ? he and his nose are very tolerant of my perfume hobby.
I think you’re right about the goblin king! And now I want to smell Tyger, Tyger cause that sounds good.
Another Labyrinth fan chiming in!
Forgive me, Donnatella, for I have sinned. Bought a travel spray of Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille from Sephora. Was wearing Hedonist earlier but switched to no 22 edt right now.
I will ask her to forgive you in Italian if that helps, I am working on scheduling my next Italian lesson online right now
Only a travel spray?! Not sure that even requires forgiveness. It’s practically free. . .
Everyone needs a little Tobacco Vanille. How is Jake doing today?
If you’re still saving for Coromandel, you may need forgiveness but only if ltsg can say it in Italian ?
Yay for a Tabacco Vanille purchase! That’s a good one!

SOTD is the mens fougere Ferragamo by Salvatore Ferragamo
layered with Basil & Neroli by Jo Malone
Breakfast is a pastrami sandwich on toast and an almond milk cappuccino . Odd, but hits the spot this morning. Another odd thing, I have been unable to find my silk soy creamer in my neighborhood and even through our online grocery delivery its been sold out.
I adore Queen, and Bowie. We did a Bohemian Rhapsody singalong with friends at The Castro theatre last year. It was a glorious experience. Packed house.
Do they still play the organ in the Castro theater before the movies start? I loved that.
Yes, they do!
The Castro holds many fond memories. We saw Poltergeist, Jo Beth Williams opened with a raucous interview, she brought her own cocktail, Mary Poppins sing along and the Sound of Music sing alongs were fantastic.
We saw Joan Rivers in Spring of 2011 before she passed away. I really hope the Castro survives the closures.
So jealous of all of this, but especially Joan Rivers! Closest I’ve gotten to see her perform was an amazing drag performer in Vegas.
That sounds so fun!!!
Ahhh…you are making me miss The Castro Theater. Good times.
Oh, that would have been fun. My favorite movie at 6 years old was Flash Gordon (circa 1981, for the young uns). Been a Queen fan ever since. I still think that movie is camp greatness.
Yesss Under pressure. Such an amazing song. ❤️
Bowie sang it live with Annie Lennox. Annie was all over him, i cant blame her. ?
There are also some good Keane live covers of this song. Tom chaplin is an amazing singer , though he channels more Freddie than David….
I almost picked the Annie Lennox one but have a soft spot for Queen.
I totally understand. ??
I had a Reuben for breakfast last week, and it really hit the spot, too.
Seeing Joan Rivers was amazing. And the audience was just as hilarious. Several friends of mine were in the front rows, and of course Joan picked on them a little bit.
I over-applied Gucci’s L’ Arte di Gucci and just about wiped out the section we were in. 😯
I’m curious as to why Diorissmo honors Changes.
I thought about this CP all week.
I am in Diaghilev, which honors Bowie himself
. I think a Roja Dov scent honors the very Brittish elegance., which Bowied carried even after he moved elsewhere and obtained other passports.
Diaghilev is an oriental scent, which honors asian influences on Bowie’s fashion and make up senses.
The historical Diaghilev, in the words of the Britticana “revitalized ballet by integrating the ideals of other art forms—music, painting, and drama—with those of the dance. ” While it is a bit of stretch to say Rock and Roll was in need of revitalization as Bowie became a star, Bowie certainly stretched its artistic possibleties by mixing the music with ideals from dance, graphic art, And Bowie’s final project was a theatre piece, a musical based upon the Man Who Fell to Earth.
Diaghilev is most remembered for shocking audiences for the sexual imagery in his ballet pieces , just as the “Glam Rock” era Bowie shocked audiences, with open bisexuality.
Diaghilev is exquisite, you smell gorgeous!
Dilana, I’m not sure it does, ha. I think I was just thinking about how Diorissimo has been a constant in my life through many changes, and how as I’ve aged my appreciation for it has changed. I used to wear it because I just thought it was pretty, now I think I wear it both because it’s pretty but also because every time I put it on, I think of how I have some of this masterpiece that will soon enough be gone from the earth.
Wearing a masterpiece that was around at the time of Bowie’s masterpieces?
I don’t know. Anyway I smell fantastic and it’s helping tamp down my general existential stress.
And also adding…pretty sure my first bottle purchase was also influenced by the houndstooth bottle, which I can still remember admiring on my dresser!
That makes perfect and beautiful sense.
I love the houndstooth too.
Robin, I’m sure you have plenty of Diorissimo, but I have an unloved small decant from a 10-15 year old bottle. I’d be glad to send it to you. I just don’t seem to enjoy lily of the valley on myself.
That is so kind! But seriously, I will never use up what I have as it is.
Not doing the CP today. I’m afraid I don’t know much about Bowie’s music. I’m wearing Habit Rouge for something like the fifth day in row.
Rumor has it that Keith Richards is a fan of Habit Rouge. Mick Jagger and Bowie did a remake of Dancing in the Streets. I’m giving you point’s by association!?
You’re like two steps away from Kevin Bacon. . .
???
Can’t remember if the Van Halen version, or the Bowie/Jagger version was the first “Dancing In The Streets” that I heard.
You been smelling great for days!
Musc Ravageur and the song Rebel Rebel. RIP Bowie?
Both big favorites of mine too.
You smell cozy!
Hi all and happy FriYAY! My SOTD is Fille en Aiguilles by Serge Lutens. From what I’ve heard, Bowie was described as smelling like pine needles after a forest fire. Applied lightly as I’m meeting our new landlord today for a final walk through.
Scent for bed time was Iris Prima by Penhaligon, it’s very soothing if a little bit too ‘pretty’ for me.
I stayed up late reading, I’m soooo very sleepy.
Ah you smell amazing. I am a big fan of Fille! ?
?Wasnt there a rumour that Bowie wore a Creed fragrance?
Silver Mountain Water, supposedly.
Yes, I think it was as Dorsey mentioned, Silver Mountain Water. I’ve seen pictures with a Dior (hounds tooth bottle) on his dresser. Given the time frame of the picture, it may be Diorella..
I never tried Silver Mountain Water. Matter of fact, I never got to smell Creeds very well…. I once tested a few in store, but they did not make a big impression.
I bet Bowie was able to wear Diorella elegantly.
But i think lots of perfume styles would fit.
L Ambre de Merveilles today because I needed something uncomplicated. I like Bowie, but could not think of a scent to match. Spent yesterday adn today researching Natasha Denona eyeshadows, I want to try them. What do you think of them? I often buy slightly used shadows for cheap and just sanitize them with alcohol, so if I don’t love them there is not much money lost.
I have Camel, and I like it. I’m not at all into the brighter colors (oranges/pinks/reds), but the texture is nice and the shadows are easy to blend.
How far away is the new place from where you are now? My brother used to live off of Parnassus when he was at UCSF and then they moved to a house in the Sunset district 2 blocks away from GG Park and a block away from an N-Judah stop. It was also within a reasonable walking distance from the Zoo and the beach but that may not always be a good thing ?
The new place is 12 miles from SF on the peninsula. We decided to move out of SF, it’s gotten a little too crazy for us…
Hope the walk through went well! ?
I’m trying a sample of West Third Brand’s I am Stardust in honor of Ziggy Stardust. It’s really nice – violets, jasmine, burnt woods, tobacco – I’m enjoying it a lot. I also thought of wearing Odeur 53 because that’s what I imagine it smelled like inside Major Tom’s ship.
My best friend once sent me this link and it made me laugh so hard I cried. That’s when I learned Diorshow mascara runs like the devil if you cry (and you wore the non-waterproof type).
https://youtu.be/BHkhIjG0DKc
OMG. That is hilarious. Totally ruined the original for me, but it is worth it!!!! (Two skinny teens jumping around an abandoned building! Who picked that site for the video? Oy! Tsk tsk. )
Lol.
Your pairing is great!
That is SOOOOOO funny!
?
Thank you for the laughs.
Great CP scents! Will have to check out I Am Stardust.
SOTD is Montale Jasmine Full, for it’s weird, spacey, metallic take on jasmine, in honor of the spaceman!
I am 4 minutes from officially starting my work day, and I do NOT want to look at screens today!!! Pout, foot-stompy, scowly face.
Yesterday, after teaching all day (screens 7 hours), I attended 2 meetings (screens 1.25 hours then 2.25 hours). And I skipped one more meeting after that (but received regular updates on my phone, so actually, more screen time then).
My kids are doing a “lab,” which will be hands-on for them, if they have access to the materials at home, but I’ll need to introduce it and stay available for anyone with questions. I’m glad we’re staying safe, but I miss lab days! Such fun to watch kids explore ideas.
Holy cow Marjorie Rose. That is a ton of work related screen time. Hope you have a restful weekend planned. And good luck with the lab!
Thank you, Robin! There’s so much work still to do. . .
I think I’m going to be “sick” on Tuesday to have some quiet time to catch up, and maybe if I’m lucky, sleep in a bit. 🙂
Who takes your place when i you calling sick?
No one. There aren’t subs right now, unless you miss several days. I will send out an “asynchronous” lesson for kids to do on their own.
And you can ignore the extra “i” which I attribute to fat fingers
What do the kids do when a teacher’s out?
I teach middle school. Many of my kids are able to work independently on assignments. There are programs that we use that help students pace out the work, where I can integrate videos, questions, drawing/illustrating their ideas, little matching games, etc, etc, that I can assign and give kids a chance to explore the information independently through multiple modes of learning.
Learned from the Sirius Underground Garage channel that it’s also Elvis Presley’s bday. Would have loved to see a Bowie/Preseley duet…maybe Jailhouse Rock ?
Supposedly he wrote “golden years” for elvis! Makes you wonder what could have happened if he hadn’t died
And Elvis turned it down! They just did that whole story on my radio.
I did not know!
I love stories like that. ?
It’s not the real thing but it’s pretty close… ?
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CzNLYolfWxE
Golden Years was the Bowie song that tuned me into his music back in 1976. I was 14 and it mesmerized me. The link below is to an article about one of my favourite concert photos of Bowie from that year “The Archer”. I have always loved his profile. Another one of my favourite things discovered in the mid-70s was Cristalle. I think it would have gone well with that crisp white shirt and slicked back hair. The photo was taken in Toronto where I live now. Had I been here back then I would hope I’d have gone to the show!
https://lfpress.com/entertainment/local-arts/photographer-of-the-rock-royalty-featured-at-poster-and-print-sale
Yes, that pairing would have interesting. Brings to mind Bing Crosby and Bowie doing “Little Drummer Boy”? A good friend didn’t believe it until I showed it to him. He sat through several times with his jaw on the floor. LOl.
I remember seeing that on broadcast TV!
I’m in Puredistance GOLD. Does it match David Bowie? I don’t know but if anyone thinks it does, that’s great!
The shine does for sure! You smell nice!
You smell great!
Minotaure came in the mail yesterday and in a full wearing. This is definitely a perfume with a strong personality like Bowie, I could totally see him wearing this. A very thick, galbanum-tobacco..sweet, green. Warm but some metallic/synthetic to it. Classic but edgy in feel. I didn’t care for this scent to wear..the scent is really synthetic/ sweet green that doesn’t go with me. However, I imagined this mixed with his cigarette smoke and that may just be a pretty good combo to smell.
It’s so hard to pick a fave Bowie song..but here’s one I discovered more recently and it’s apparently one of his best vocal performances.
Wild is the Wind:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YsqlXkkEKxI
I had never seen the video, and looked it up on Wikipedia. Inspired by Nina Simone’s version, nice!
Wearing L’Artisan Seville l’Aube for Bowie’s Golden Years. I need to drag my lazy rear end into the kitchen and cook this afternoon and I think I’ll listen to Bowie the whole time.
Oh I like that match.
Freshly showered and in a layer of Replica’s Blur. As someone who grew up in the 80’s, I’ll pair it with Let’s Dance. It was either that or Modern Love, it was a tough choice.
I’m currently awaiting some samples to arrive. I went a little crazy last weekend and ordered several that I’ve been wanting to try. Chanel, some Le Labos, and some from Heretic.
Also, my haircut yesterday made Instagram, lol.??♀️
Oooh, am I following you? If not, can you DM me? Thanks.
I just started following you.??
Yay!
Same. Wondering how to follow you….
Nesting comments – oy! Hopefully mtg sees my attempt to correct ⬇️
And see LizzieB’s comment ⬆️
Chose Cabochard in honor of Young Americans, but thought the group might enjoy Bowie in his last live appearance, fronting Pink Floyd at Royal Albert Hall in 2007 (pretty sure) singing Arnold Layne, an early Floyd song written by Syd Barrett. He covered the song on his album Pin Ups.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9NivaKUFME
No Roger Waters, thank heavens, and Rick Wright is on keyboards – he died the following year. The band looks so happy to have Bowie there, David Gilmour and Wright smiling with Bowie. And Bowie looks well, complete, and hits the cockney accent hard. Perfection.
Enjoy the day.
I don’t have time to watch this now, but will for sure later. Curious why thank heaven’s for no Roger Waters? I must not no something.
He’s known to be controlling with bandmates, egotistical and difficult. He has had conflicts with Gilmour and Nick Mason, the drummer. A quote I heard: Someone asked Nick Mason who he most wanted to be. His answer: “Roger Waters, so I could tell myself what to do.”
DH and I watched a TV interview about the album The Wall, or Division Bell, iirc. Waters seemed arrogant. He’s also made anti-semitic comments. Who needs more people like that, especially during these times?
Thanks for the reply. I did not know any of this!
This is a haaarrrrrdddd (whining) CP. I’m in Rouge Smoking, paired with John, I’m Only Dancing. Bear with me–as in ‘John, I’m only wearing perfume (not smoking. . . “won’t someone give me a light?”)’ Sounds dumb? Well, I tried. 😉 !!
Good for giving it a go!
🙂
You smell great. I have a decant of Rough Smoking and quite like it.
I kinda do smell great.
I got a few BDK samples from Luckyscent recently. If such a thing existed, I’d be in like Flynn on a discovery set! This house is totally new to me but I so far so good. I even like the colors of the perfumes.
My SOTD is maybe a little bit off the average choice for Bowie, but it works for me. I’m wearing Frau Tonis No. 10 Linde Berlin to go with “Where Are We Now?” Both remind me of my visits to Berlin; the time periods Bowie’s looking back at in the song line up pretty closely with the timing of my first two visits, which left strong impressions (ages 7 & 19), and he captures pretty well how I feel now when I go back. We stayed not far from Bösebrücke the last time I was there, and the song kept playing in my head. (I also bought a backup bottle of this perfume the last time I was there.)
I’d thought earlier this week of wearing Feu d’Issey, which to me has a similar vibe to some of his early personas, but never got around to it — had appointments and a weird work schedule and ended up going commando a couple of days.
Happy Friday, everyone!
I have a travel spray of that perfume that I bought in Berlin. You smell amazing! I wish I had thought of it for today.
Pacifica Sugared Amber Dreams which is a comforting, uncomplicated scent.♥️
My sweet daughter has been having some post car accident anxiety and stress. 🙁 I feel so bad. Going to have her talk to a therapist.
I know you smell good and simple is better most days.
I hope your daughter’s anxiety eases!
Poor baby, hope the therapist can help her get over her anxiety.
Oh She-ra, I’m so sorry. When you said you had been in a car accident, I wondered if your daughter was with you but I didn’t want to ask. Years ago when madtownteen was little (car seat age) we were “t-boned” at an intersection as a young guy tried to run the red light. Neither of us was hurt, but the first thing I said when I got out of the car was “my daughter was in the car!!”? She was my first thought and my first priority as I’m sure your sweet girl is for you. I hope the therapist helps. I will be keeping both of you in my thoughts!
Poor little sweetie. I hope the therapist can help her.
sorry for your daughter!
Oh no, was she in the car with you? I’m so sorry 🙁 hope the therapist can help.
oh no, I am so sorry for your daughter.
You are a good mom to help her process the accident. I hope it helps.
Sending positive thoughts your way and especially your daughter’s way.
Oh, that’s rough! Sending big hugs to both of you.
Poor kiddo. Hope that she gets what she needs to process the whole thing.
Wearing slm cuir d’orient, another sample. I am finding it very powdery.
Cape Heartache, to go with Modern Love. There’s a claim out there that he liked foresty notes.
Plus, you smell great.
Choices, choices. First I thought of No. 19. Cool detached, thin like a whippet. That would be the Thin White Duke. But went with Alien Liqueur. Saw him as Ziggy and then on the Glass Spider tour. He was a very good actor also. My two favorites are “Absolute Beginners”. And “Merry Christmas, Mr Lawerence”. The latter is based on a true story and Bowie does a great job.
Ive never seen ‘merry christmas, mr lawrence’ ?(yeah i know, shame on me), but I have heard that soundtrack by Sakomoto…its beautiful!
Wow, very jealous you saw him as Ziggy! I bet it’s an amazing memory.
So much for planning a scent…. I was perusing options and picked up the Memo Paris sample set I got at a Sniffapalooza. Couldn’t tell what one of them was so picked it up to turn it over, and I pressed the sprayer by accident. So…in for a little….
Lalibela is the scent. I sprayed more on because it was quite warm and pleasant. So, I guess it works as an antidote to Under Pressure.
I chose dent de lait because I wanted something weird, but then I remembered that it isn’t very weird at all! At least to me, it smells like Versace baby rose jeans. After my shower I think ill put on Minotaure instead
Hope you are smelling weird in Minotaure now!
Went with Jorum Studio Phloem for today’s theme because some full-on OTT weirdness is definitely Bowie-esque.
Much like Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream”, it’s somehow all the things at once – an alligator, a mama-papa comin’ for you, a space invader, a rock ‘n’ rolling b*tch.
https://youtu.be/JFDj3shXvco
Happy Friyay!
Nice 🙂
Ahh, Moonage Daydream. Nice choice choosing a strange Jorum.
SOTD = Valentino Uomo by Valentino
Why don’t I wear this more often? It leans on the masculine side of unisex, but who wouldn’t like woody, hazelnut, leather, vetiver, coffee?
https://www.instagram.com/p/CJypkxNhRJr/?igshid=1iu30qo8y27ip
As someone who is more visual than auditory, I chose today’s perfume to match with his spiky-haired image, while at the same time, he seems to always be so put together. And Mr. Lion made an appearance because spiky mane ?!
Ooh, hazelnut and coffee?!
Yes, coffee is not very prominent. Think of this as a more masculine, less sweet Angel Muse.
I have several masculine-leaning scents and don’t mind that at all, as long as it doesn’t smell like “cologne.” That aquatic note that is everywhere is just, ugh. I’ve avoided malls for so long now, I don’t know if I’ve smelled Angel Muse! I have a mini of Angel that I never reach for. . .
Angel and Angel Muse are worlds apart IMHO.
I’d say that Angel and Angel Muse are both gourmand perfumes, but that’s about as close as they get. Angel Muse doesn’t have any fruit in it.
That sounds pretty good to me. Added to the sample list!
Valentino Uomo sounds like what that Caron perfume Kevin reviewed was aiming for.
Oooh, I have to read that!
Funny, Kevin actually reviewed Valentino Uomo in March 2014. He wasn’t a fan. (I might like it though, it sounds pretty good to me.)
Question for the perfume hive mind: I recently got a decant of Malle U Fleur Cassie, after not having worn it for several years- the decant seems to lack the grandeu and complexity that I remember this scent having. Have t he Frederic Malle scents been reformulated, or is my memory playing games with me??
I will not return to Station to Staion & TVC15, my favorite Bowie 🙂
Yes, the Malles have been reformulated.
Yup. 🙁
They’ve probably been reformulated several times as most perfumes are. I wasn’t altogether smitten with the first version of Cassie I smelled in 2009 or so. I got my bottle in 2014 I think, and it was different allright but still radiant and complex, haven’t tried it in shops in years. Also perfumes do doffer slightly from batch to batch. Or your memory may be playing tricks after all.
Histoires de Parfums 1804, George Sand, as she didn’t conform to gender stereotype either!
Love this connection!
Me too.
The BBC had a gorgeous photo of Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust days, complete with guyliner and lipgloss.
Like others of you, Bowie is 1980s for me and so I’m in Coco (released in 1984) to celebrate him that way. And enjoying it thoroughly!
Nice!
I am a week into Adriene’s 30 days and yesterday was really a good ab workout!
Yes! I ‘ve been able to keep up with Adriene’s daily yoga every morning so far. I bookmarked yesterday’s for a good core workout in the future, too!
Happy that you are doing it with me!
??
Teebear said Bowie was a drinker, so I’m wearing Kilian Single Malt today. Very foggy this morning!
We’ve been foggy here too lately. Need sun!
You smell really nice. Sun was out earlier but it disappeared. Hoping I can still get my walk in without freezing.
There was sun today???
We got a few hours of sun, but the fog has rolled back in. Hope you got your walk!
SOTD is a sample of Marc-Antoine Barrois’ Ganymede and listening to Bowie’s Starman. But I’ll probably wear something else later since this one is a bit too ozonic and sharp for me.
I was thinking of wearing a Japanese scent since I know Bowie was a Japanophile. Might have to pull out Le Labo’s Gaiac or Shiseido FdB then!
Happy Friday everyone!
Uncharacteristically, I like Ganymede so you smell nice, whatever you ended up wearing later!
I’m in Aftelier Bergamoss again today, thanks to 50_Roses. This is so beautiful, deep and bright at the same time.
Laundry today, and finishing the reorganization of the storage cabinet in the dining room.
Wild question: if you have a good 3 cups of salted, roasted peanuts that someone decided they don’t like anymore, how would you use them up?!? Gahhh…
For the peanuts, maybe a salted peanut brittle? Or there are some peanut stews I’ve seen, but I honestly don’t know if those use peanut butter or peanuts!
I made peanut butter brittle this year for the first time, and it was amazing!
Peanut stew sounds nice! Delete the collard greens and the hubs might eat it. Thank you!
I’ll just smash them in the blender into peanut butter.Or make a peanut butter smoothie? There is a Deli close to me that makes a peanut butter milkshake…o.m.g.Too good.
I used to get peanut butter milkshakes from a real greasy spoon as a kid. They were A-MA-ZING!
Hey, I could rinse them off a bit to get rid of some of the salt, and then just make peanut butter. Why didn’t I think of that? Thanks, johanob!
My pleasure!(I have done it with Macadamia nuts, and it was a success!)
Okay, I have an idea for the CP. I’ll spray a little Dzing! on my shoulder. It’s a bit quirky, but I wholeheartedly love it anyway, just like Bowie. ❤️
I would save some and toss them with some sugar and eat as a snack!
How about a peanut curry?
I would crush them and put them as a topping on Jeni’s Peanut Butter Chocolate Fleck ice cream ???
Mmm I love peanut butter ice cream. 🙂
It is so good.
I was going to second the peanut brittle. Or maybe sneak a few of them into peanut butter cookies?
Bowie always struck me as a “cold” kind of guy, all look-but-don’t touch, so I’m wearing a cold fragrance–Impossible Iris.
Gosh, I haven’t worn mine in ages. You smell great!
A good reference for him.
Great choice!
Really good reference for Bowie, especially Thin White Duke era.
I am no good at pairing scents with songs, and anyway was not much of a Bowie fan until I watched Grosse Pointe Blank – there’s a scene where Under Pressure is played, and it was perfect for that movie and that scene. (Confession: I will watch John Cusack in almost anything.) My primary thoughts about David Bowie are that he possessed seemingly limitless elegance, poise and grace – the last time I saw him on television it was him on stage, late in his life, not singing or performing but smiling and strolling around with his cane, with tremendous dignity and insouciance, like a thinner and blonder John Steed. I’m pairing that mental image with Hermes Bel Ami today.
That’s a great image and pairing. I have a hard time pairing scents to songs as well. It’s just not how I usually think about fragrance (although it is still an interesting mental exercise).
Be still my heart…John Cusack!???
Indeed! 😀
I know! Those brown eyes….❤️
Loved that movie!
I will also watch John Cusack in anything!
I loved that movie. I think my favorite musical moment was they way they used “Live and let die”.
Yes! I forgot about that!
I will just watch John Cusack ?.
David Bowie as John Steed! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
When I read that, wasn’t sure how many of us here would get the reference!
I know – wouldn’t that have been just yummy? ?
Team Steed, and of course Iman could bring a lot to the character of Mrs. Peel.
Unfamiliar with Bel Ami, but your rationale makes sense. Also a big fan of Grosse Pointe Blank, and its entire fab soundtrack.
On me Bel Ami is a birch-tarry leather, quite elegant in a masculine kind of way. I don’t know what “vintage” my decant is – it’s whatever STC had in stock in early 2014 – but if you like leather fragrances it’s worth checking out.
ha! SheriG I first read this as bitchy-tarry leather which was so funny!
Hah! My brain does that too, and I find myself often saying “wait, what??” 😀
Did the same thing, too. ??
SotD for CP points: Fracas, in honor of Iman, who reportedly loved it: https://perfumeprofessor.net/2018/07/16/vanities-imans-favorite-perfume-and-home-fragrance/
However, after spritzing up post-shower, I decided to top it off as I was rushing off to work (yes, if I’m wearing Fracas to work, everyone’s gonna know it). But the bottle of Casbah was right next to it and before the first wave hit, I’d added three sprays. Interesting to say the least, but the surprise result was Casbah just brushed Miss Fracas aside, and that’s all I smell!
I was also thinking about Iman,as I knew way more about her than Bowie!
Oh God, Fracas is WOWZERS and of course it’s Iman favorite fragrance – she’s wowzers!
Your comment sent me down an Iman rabbit hole. . .
Giving you a virtual high five for wearing Fracas to work!
Thanks, KellyC. It is fun!
Whoa, something that can take on Fracas and win?!
Not to run on, but I should add that whenever I wear Fracas, it’s as if it had holes in it: something in the edp makes it disappear
though it comes back . I have a mini of the parfum, and it stays with me like Fracas should. But that said, the Casbah pushed through my accidental layering, and I smelled, and perhaps wafted, Casbah all day. Casbah is one that I really like, and admire as a composition, but falls short of being a favorite.
Happy Friyay!
I am not too familiar with anything Bowie, except I was a huge fan of Iman always, and noticed David Bowie in Labyrinth for the first time(I was 9 years old then.lol)
In honor of his fabulously glittery life I am wearing Byredo Bullion, over the top perfume adorned with exotic flowers and a touch of suede.I have a love/hate relationship with it!
I was always fascinated by David Bowie’s teeth,by the way.He would have been a fabulous vampire.
XO
Didnt he play a vampire in The Hunger?
I don’t know,but now I am curious as well!
Ive seen it long long time ago.
It also stars Catherine Deneuve!!!! and Susan Sarandon!
It was not very good. Loads of Style over substance though.
So I bet its still watcheable and emjoyable if you like beautiful people in 80s goth fashion. ?
And I think it has acquired a firm cult status over the years…
Dank je wel!I will definitely seek it out!
????
I loved The Hunger!
I’m a member of the cult. The Hunger is great!!
I just watched the opening credits and a snippet of the first scene…oh my,that movie was saucy!Haha!
Bela Lugosi is dead! ✌???
?
I really need to revisit it.
I cant recall the story or acting being that great. But i totally get why decades later its still has fans ?
your comment about the teeth/vampire is hysterical..
Sending you bites and instead of baci
Haha!
Merci!
?
I saw Labyrinth when it came out in a theater. It was gorgeous on the big screen.
Just not feeling’ it today.
Commando but maybe my sample of Xerjoff 1861 Renaissance soon.
It is so uplifting and bright and happy and serene.
Did the sample uplift your spirits? Whatever the case, you will find your groove back for sure!
Did you end up in perfume after all today?
Wearing Serge Lutens Boxeuses in preparation to an unpleasant and potentially confrontational meeting later today. Paring it with Bowie’s Queen Bitch:
“ If she says she can do it, then she can do it, she don’t make false claims”
You’ll get this, just like the previous time!
Very good luck to you Undina!
Good luck with the meeting. Love that song! Power through it.
Go get ’em, Undina!
I know so little about David Bowie that any attempt at the CP made me feel like a poser, so I’m in the last drops of a sample of Portrait of a Lady that I’ve had for at least two years. It’s beautiful, but it’s just not me.
At least for the beauty part 🙂
Day 3 of TF Lost Cherry. Wow, this scent is really WORKING on me at this time of year. I will be so sorry when my decant is empty. Today it’s extra fruity up top, with the sandalwood down below it begging to sing out. Also the bottle is gorgeous. Nope nope nope.
Koyel, totally unrelated to perfume lol, but I’ve been meaning to thank you for the link to the Sherpa lined sweatpants. I got a pair for my college daughter for Christmas and she LOVES them!?
Oh how awesome! I’m thrilled to have enabled that purchase 🙂 I actually just ordered myself a second pair because I love the first pair so much and hate having to wait for it to be washed. Haha.
Please share again!
Of course, here it is: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L6CT48M/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And why not? If this is one that the fiancé … does not hate … maybe it could be a here honey I can help you decide what to get me for Valentine’s Day…or maybe it’s the reward for getting the feve.
Ahahaha I love it–a reward for my coronation!!
The fiance has said variously: “You smell like a candle” and “You smell like potpourri.” Neither of these is a compliment, but on the upside, neither is an expression of disgust! I count that as a win. But really I don’t think I could possibly justify paying THAT much money for something I so completely don’t need. (My perfume will of course already outlast me.) Maybe if I ever see it on like 50% off sale. Ha.
You smell sooo good!
Doesn’t Lost Cherry come in a travel spray? That would certainly be the more affordable expense. And if you use it up, you could always get another one… ??
SOTD is Ralph Lauren Lauren, from my new bottle. About as un-Bowie a scent as could be, but it’s nostalgic from the same time period as when I first got into Bowie, so that’s a link, eh?
I’m sure this current version isn’t what the scent used to be, but it is most definitely still green and not at all akin to modern popular scents.
Oh, I remember liking that one, and you are right- not of the moment at all!
It’s Friday, guys, and thank the universe, we are still here!
I was think about David Bowie this morning- he had several lifetimes when most of us are just lucky enough to have one. After the cold awful hollowness of Thin White Duke, Bowie went to Berlin and did the Berlin Trilogy, cleaning up his mental and spiritual life and doing remarkable art.
My pick is TF Grey Vetiver- clean, so crisp and yet creamy, grassy green yet with a warm earthiness. Despite how it is marketed, it is inclusive.
It’s the thing to wear while listening to Low/Heroes/Lodger.
Love your analysis of Bowie and his art!
Oh gosh, thanks!
I have been a fan since I was a little one and saw Labyrinth! I am also a low key fan of his son, Duncan Jones, a brilliant director and artist in his own right!
Moon is a brilliant movie!
I skipped his Warcraft movie though (and I used to play warcraft 3 a lot) ? did i make the right decision?
It was weird! I watched with wine in the theaters and it was fun, but weird!
You smell great! I love Grey Vetiver. Crisp and green indeed ?
I am rationing it and I really shouldn’t- it’s so good!
You smell super good today!
Paired Marni Rose with Bowie’s Kooks today, only because I wore Marni constantly in the last months of my first pregnancy and listened to Kooks A LOT. Such a sweet song that made me feel like having a kid is a happy and loving (and totally not scary) thing to do.
Bowie took great joy & pride in raising his children- Duncan and Zara were the apples of his eyes- so of course Kooks is awesome song- all the love that new parents would sing to a new baby!
I am enjoying everyone’s choices and comments for the David Bowie CP! I saw Bowie here in Virginia in 1983 for The Serious Moonlight Tour. He was so dapper and elegant! Vintage Miss Dior today to honor this memory.
Great choice!
What fun!! I am sorry I never saw him.
Tuscan Leather today for All the young Dudes.
https://youtu.be/ToXGVcrgNZA
For those missing the sun today, I’m hogging it all!?
You smell great!
Thank you!
Yay. But give the sun back PLEASE.
I have to relinquish it by Sunday.
What happens on Sunday?
Clouds start rolling in, I imagine my sun will head east.
You smell amazing!!!
Wearing White Diamonds for Diamond Dogs because it made me laugh.
😀
That is a hoot – some nice, sweet WD is the very best that can be done for that album cover, which I always thought was ugly. I truly wonder if Mr. Bowie did cringe when looking back on that. As one firmly in the cat-mad camp, I should add I don’t like the costumes in the musical Cats, either.
I have prepared for this all week! Yes, he played a vampire in The Hunger, and I think it’s a fabulous film! I went to Europe in spring of 1983 and have a vivid memory of huge posters advertising it all over Paris, featuring him with Catherine Deneuve as the most elegant blond vampires you could ever see. I loved it! It’s erotic, stylish, and ultimately tragic. So what’s my perfume? Perhaps not quite what he would wear, but a tribute–St. Clair Scents Pharaoh’s Passion. Because, vampires are dead, and pharaohs had elaborate burial ceremonies including spices and herbs, and so–voila! If he had been preserved for centuries and still looked (mostly) so good, he must have packed some sort of delicate odor of beautiful spices and resins, underlain by, alas, the odor of decay. ;-(. Click here for a picture and more about the movie. https://www.reddit.com/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/iuse3y/david_bowie_and_catherine_deneuve_playing_a_pair/
PS. I was never into his music once, he came along just a bit after my prime time for rock & roll.
Great picture! ?
Now i want to watch the movie! (like i said to johanob) its been ages since I saw it.
its availabe (rent or buy) on YouTube
Ooh, great choice! I love your explanation.
How is your hand today?
Thank you for asking. In fact, today was my first day of physical (occupational) therapy. I now have a list of about 15 exercises to do reps of 4 times a day! I hope this will improve my strength and flexibility, which are not good right now.
I hope you will see improvements soon!!
Great pairing!
Good luck with your PT regimen and exercises.
For all Bowie fans, the London staging of his musical ‘Lazarus’ is live-streaming this weekend only. Info at:

For today’s cp, I chose YSL Black Opium, announced as the rock’n roll interpretation of the addictive classic, highlighting its dark mysterious side, and with its dark bottle sequined for a glam, elegant look – I think this suits the Bowie mystique well. No particular song in general, although ‘Let’s Dance’ and its symbolic red shoes is a favorite of mine. (And although this scent gets a lot of negative reviews, it smells good on me; I love the coffee note!)
For many of us, especially here in the U.S., it’s been a difficult week. Here’s to a better one next week! Stay safe, stay well, stay hopeful . . . And be kind.
We did indeed make it thru this week! Whew.
Sampling 8 Billion Astronauts from Soivohle to go with Space Oddity. I’m kind of liking this scent. Spent last night dipping in the ocean and figuring out how we want to use this little studio space. Today we went to Target and got an instant pot with air fryer lid to handle most of our cooking needs (apartment has a one burner hotplate and a microwave)
That sounds more like a hotel room with kitchen privileges, assuming it was outfitted that way on purpose because they assume you will be out stimulating the economy (other than buying groceries).
How is the perfume scenery there?
I am walking distance to a Saks and the Target is near a mall that has a Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdale’s. Haven’t been in any of them yet but I think I’ll be alright for perfume sniffing. You totally nailed that I would have this info acquired within 24 hours of landing
Great! Happy sniffing and offsite perfume storage ?
One burner and a microwave? Oh my. Hope the instant pot does the job for you.
I chose K de Krizia for the Thin White Duke era.
I was such a fan of that scent back in the day! It was my signature. I still have a bottle, though it’s gone off some. Good choice.
Glad you like it, my vintage bottle is still good but with your experience I will use it more often from now on.
Bowie song of the Day: “Fame”.
However, like Jiji, I became better acquainted with most of David Bowie’s work in the 1980’s. ESPECIALLY his role in Labyrinth. Holy. Freaking. Smoke. I think I had to take a cold shower after seeing that movie.
SOTD = Mitsouko EdP, dabbed. This is what the Goblin King in Labyrinth smelled like as he tried to seduce the pretty young female protagonist, and derail her attempt to rescue her baby brother.
Oy! I never did get along with Mitzy but what a storyline!
Mitsouko is perfumed roulette for me. Sometimes, like today, it is gorgeous! I even smelled the peach topnote, which almost never happens for me. Other times, there’s a bit of a tantrum, and I end up getting a big whiff of gasoline in my chypre.
Happy Friday! Getting some snow right now in the NC triad area ☃️!
Wearing Coco Mademoiselle Intense to celebrate Mr. Bowie’s birthday. Have a good weekend everybody.
https://youtu.be/drKBhB82l0I
Ooh – where are you? It’s 7 pm and we’re still just getting stupid cold rain in Cary.
Just West of Winston-Salem. I think we’re supposed to get a WHOLE INCH ?
Jealous!!
SotD = CdG Avignon
Avignon makes me take notice and smile every time. The lemon-lime soda opening is fantastic, as is the rest of the ride. Such beautiful incense.
I chose Avignon and Rebel Rebel for Bowie Friday because I like to imagine he smelled wonderful all the time. And because Avignon reminds me of the rebellious spirit that makes life interesting, the contrasts between the sacred and the profane in music, art, religion, and most every aspect of the human experience.
Music and scent go together for me. Love this project and look forward to reading all the comments.
So glad this week is winding down, it was a doozy!
Avignon is amazing and you smell wonderful!
I don’t get lemon-lime soda with Avignon, but a decent whiff of chamomile. Don’t like the tea, but in perfume it works for me.
Not participating in Bowie today, though I do think he’s fab. Wearing just a smidge of Amazing Grace from the sample set my son’s gf got me for Christmas. Y’all know I don’t like smelling “clean” but this is hitting the spot for me for some reason today. Happy Friday, friends!
I got so caught up in work I almost forgot about the CP.
Just switched to ELDO’s Tilda Swinton Like This, because it’s fun and a little weird (pumpkin?) and if you were going to cast someone as Bowie, wouldn’t Tilda be perfect?
Now I have to go read the comments to see what everyone else did.
Oh, that is an intriguing idea! Tilda as Bowie in a biopic.
SWINTON as Bowie? Yes, please! 😀
Sigh, I really thought I’d post in the morning but got caught up in working and obsessively reading the news. Sadly, I didn’t get to go all out for Bowie week. I didn’t even wear perfume for two days.
But today I decided to wear one of my favorite perfumes for one of my favorite musicians, L’air de Rien.
Pairing it with Five Years, the opening song on The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust. I think it’s one of the best first songs on an album ever. Please give it a listen if you’ve never heard it!
https://youtu.be/4bcnO3VQ_fc
Hi, folks. It’s been a heck of a week. I skimmed through the last couple of days of comments and saw Robin’s reminder that we don’t talk about politics here. For those of you who are “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fans and have gotten to the end of season three, I feel like my brain is worn down to “Fire bad, tree pretty” mode.
I was still thinking of Trixie wearing Chant d’Aromes in the Christmas episode of “Call the Midwife,” so I continued on a Guerlain kick on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday was Cologne du Coq (sp?) and Thursday bedtime was Vol de Nuit. Nothing yet today, but I’ll probably put some pleasant-scented hand lotion on at bedtime.
Let’s hope the weekend is quieter.
