Tuesday scent of the day 12/15

Posted by Robin on 15 December 2020 248 Comments

It's Tuesday, plus Bill of Rights Day, National Cupcake Day and the sixth night of Hanukkah. A belated RIP for Charley Pride and John le Carré. What fragrance are you wearing?

Me: warming up the morning with Eau d'Italie Baume du Doge.

Reminder: on 12/18 we're doing Best of 2020...wear one of your favorite fragrance releases of 2020.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2020, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown are items from the Gardens of Lyra collection by Spode and artist Paul Scott for Fortnum & Mason. "Designed exclusively for Fortnum & Mason, Gardens of Lyra takes inspiration from tea plantations around the world and their surrounding landscapes. Beautifully collaged and cloned visuals of the transferware pattern found in Spode's extensive archive are depicted throughout this mythical collection." A two cup teapot is £140.

A preview of my Friday as it’s my only 2020 newbie: St Clair Scents Song of Aubrac.

It feels like -19°C outside, but it doesn’t matter because it’s sunny and I’m double-caffeinated today. Happy Tuesday! What a lovely teapot choice, Robin.

This is a new favorite for me this year (not a new release) — yes it takes a while for me to catch up!

Bright, blue sky out today with lots of sun. Good to see and hope to get out shortly to mail some Christmas gifts.

My brother in Austin reported he purchased his first Christmas tree ever but due to the huge increase of folks staying home this year he could not find a tree stand anywhere! The poor tree is leaning against his living room wall for the time being but at least in a bucket of water, lol.

I have never used a tree stand but just a big bucket, wedge bricks and half bricks (concrete, rocks etc) around the tree ( inside the bucket) to keep it upright and weighted ( so it won’t topple over) and then fill the bucket with water to keep it alive and healthy. Top up the wather every day or so and it will be good for a month at least. Wrap sacking or tinsel etc. around bucket for improved visuals. Works on any size tree, just get a bigger bucket.

Tea is rooibos from celestial tea, a cheap but good packaged tea options. The kids like this one, so I make a pot. It also has vanilla.

While searching for my bottle of Alahiiiine, I found my bottle of Frangipani by Lili Bermuda so that is my SOTD. The notes
Jasmine Orange Blossom Ylang-Ylang Vetiver Patchouli Vanilla Cassis

OOh, your mention of “cheap but good packaged teas,” reminds me of a question I had for all you tea-drinkin’ folks. Is there an easily accessible black tea that you consider especially tasty? I’m nearly done with my endless pack of Lipton (so you know my usual low standards), and I sometimes like a cup of tea in the middle of the day.

I do not like Earl Grey (too musty) and I have plenty of green tea for when I want something soft and meditative (which turns out to be nearly never). I have a loose-leaf chai that I really like, but don’t bother with while I’m working.

So, to sum up, an easy, tasty, lazy bag of pretty darn good black tea I can find at a supermarket. What would you recommend? Thanks!

        Marjorie Rose-
Mr L told me the other day that I am like an Arab, I drink tea all day. This is a very nice compliment to me ;)
Have you ever tried to basic Twinnings tea?
At our corner store they sell tea sachets of Harney and Sons, my favorite being Paris which tastes like MF Marco Polo and is great as an afternoon tea and I think its about 6 or 7 dollars for 20 tea sachets and my French neighbor drinks their English breakfast and enjoys those tea bags as well.
When I visit a more ethnic grocer I like the Ahmad tea, their English Breakfast is about 20 sachets for 3 or 4. They also make a classic black sampler box.

I just read the bit about shopping at your local store and I am not sure where you life but I think Harney & Sons and Twinnings are easy to find your local store.
The Ahmad teas I find here and there. I was turned on to them when I lived in San Francisco and they were at a greek/lebanese grocer I visited.

The nearest ethnic grocery we have is an H-Mart down the road, which is Korean-owned. I like the tins of loose-leaf jasmine tea I can get there, but I haven’t tried any of the bagged teas, yet.

I’m not knowledgeable about tea, I mainly drink mint or chamomile, but Bigelow Constant Comment is a black tea blend that’s cheap and delicious imho. My mom used to make a pot in the afternoon and we’d have a cup when I got home from school, so there’s definitely nostalgia for me.

Tazo is easily found, and has both herbal tisanes and black teas. Twinings is good for basic English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast. Not so cheap, but really good are the Republic of Tea choices in most larger grocery stores (at least in Texas). As mentioned by ringthing, Bigelow is good and quite cheap. My favorite of theirs is Lemon Lift, which is a lemon spice tea, and also Constant Comment, which is an orange spice tea.

Continuing with my anti-theme theme (yesterday’s “new release” Tardes from 2010 made me laugh to learn!), I am wearing one of the very first scents I ever purchased, Givenchy Ange ou Demon Le Secret. It is powdery with a bit of bity citrus (they say cranberry), and I associate it with this time of year, since it was a Christmas present to myself. I’ve nearly drained my bottle, and I very well may decide to go find another one at a discounter somewhere!

It doesn’t read as cranberry to my nose, maybe grapefruit. Mostly, this is traditional, powdering “pink” mall scent, but there’s definitely something sharp/sour to balance out the sweet powder. It’s that balance that makes it work for me.

Nina Ricci L’air du Temps, Caron Bellodgia (may be misspelled,) Etro Dianthus and En Voyage Fiore di Bellagio are all carnation-centric perfumes I like.

Twins! Though I’m wearing mine for kinda the opposite reason, maybe? I went to see my RMT for the first time in a year, and I wanted something that fit the season but wouldn’t offend him. We were all VERY VERY safe, though he of course pointed out that there’s always *some* risk and wanted to make sure I was good with it. But they are doing a great job with following all the mandates.

I’m re-trying Soivohle Tobacco and Black Moss today, and liking it better than I did the first time around. I have to say that there is something in the top notes that I don’t like at all, but it’s gone in a minute and a half, and what’s left is very nice indeed. Doesn’t seem to have a lot of longevity though – ymmv.

SotD: Avon Little Black Dress. Doused myself and after about 5 hours can’t really smell anything. I do think some people just want that initial wave and then to just forget about their perfume. I want mine to to be like my cats, either winding around my legs wanting attention or sitting next to me purring loudly.

Nice analogies! I find the ones that always want attention to get annoying and/or distracting. I opt for the reassuring hum or intermittent but low key breezes. I get nose blind quickly though so find it hard to get scent to the right volume. If I put a lot on it irritates me too ?

No paws tapping your face in the middle of the night, eh? LOL. I tried to think of something with a low-key breeze, and two I got from NST split meets just this year might be that scent: PoTL Luctor et Emergo and Guerlain Iris Torrefie. I really like both and they have a soft presence. IT was especially interesting in that I got nose blind as the evening wore on, but the next day, it smelled wonderful on my clothes.

I don’t suppose I can say (sigh) ” first world problems” as it probably isn’t much of a first world problem, unlike choosing perfume. Yesterday I tried a recent CDG L’Odeur series, Chaletet theatre…woodsy, spicy, smoky like an old theatre but then something very bitter strides through the middle ( possibly the understudy? Or former leading actor?) Reminds me I watched some of the Fosse/ Verdon series…good acting, a bit flat in places, but okay.

Well today is again, Tango for me. It’s a beast when it comes to longetivity however even though it’s a very deep fragrance, it’s never too heavy as long as I keep spritzing a bare minimum. It’s crazy because what I eat most in my food are hot, chili peppers. Or serrano. I love to eat HOT food. But I also LOVE black pepper a lot too. And what I live about Tango most is its gorgeous, black pepper- hot top and middle notes. Plus it’s just so aromatic and of such high quality it’s beautiful. I am so happy. Actually it smells BETTER than I expected. I wanted an amber perfume. And I got one in Tango. But the extra I keep getting is this delicious, spicy, beautiful black pepper. I’m in bliss!!

My friend sent me a sample set for a Christmas present so I actually can now participate in the CP! The set was from A.N. Other, and it contains two 2020 scents which weren’t available when I sampled the brand in 2018. Today I’m trying SN/20, which is a nice osmanthus scent. There’s something else there but I forgot to check the notes so I’m trying to figure it out without help.

I did buy a travel spray of Madie sometime early in the pandemic, and it is a 2020 release but it’s so beachy that I don’t want to wear it in December.

According an article, whose link Robin graciously flagged, Dolly Parton has signed a licensing fragrance deal. She apparently hopes to have both high priced and low priced items and a range of products. (She uses some euphemism for the price differentials, but we know what she means).
The hope of multiple markets is smart business sense, but it also fits with my general idea of Parton. There is the “high class image
the musician/songwriter with the pure Apalachian voice and gospel/blue grass base.
And then there is the Dolly with all the wigs, the bright red lipstick, the plastic surgery and that Barbie Doll figure.
There is the school girl Dolly with the patchwork coat of many color who becamethe Superstar Dolly with gowns of many colored crystals,-made no doubt by her personal costumer.

Anyway, I keep trying to imagine her signature fragrance-something that merges the scent of hairspray and the smell of mountain spring which lasts as long as that high note in “I will always Love You” seems to last when Whitney sang it, but feels as soft and wistful as the song when Dolly originally sang it.

Oh and the scent should definately have posies, the flower once thought to fight the plague, honoring Dolly’s contribution to plague fighting (For those of you who do not know, Parton gave Vanderbilt a million dollar contribution toward Covid 19 research, funds which were used to develop the M-RNA vaccine).

Ok, I like this game. I want the Dolly signature fragrance to smell like something I’d put on for a live show–something loud enough to be smelled over the audience and glasses of beer. I agree with her “two sides,” and I think it could be a really well made trashy scent, if that makes any sense?! 60’s/70’s Vintage Shalimar feels that way to me. Lots of the big hair scents from the 80’s, too. So, maybe it’s like Opium? All sillage and sequins.

    Beautiful tea set.
I was wearing Jo Loves Red Truffle during the day, gourmandy, earthy fig suitable for fall, and this evening Les Neréides Imperial Opoponax.

I love the red boxes, some of the scents did not impress me, and some lack originality, but her gardenia (without tuberose which I don’t like with my gardenias) is really good and Green Orange and Coriander too, I bought it for my brother.

I’m wearing Narciso (white cube) because Cormoran Strike bought it for Robin in Troubled Blood and I wanted to know what she smelled like. You all will understand, I am sure.

She-Ra, I wanted to say re: your yesterday’s comment about kitties that two is probably better, and it’s probably best if they are close in age. Dapper the kitten has Bertie Wooster to play with, but Bertie is at least 10 years old and sometimes gets fed up with kitten antics. Also, besides the laser pointer, the circular track with the ball trapped inside has paid for itself a hundred times over, and it was cheap to begin with. Dapper sits in the middle and swats the ball for minutes at a time.

Unfortunately don’t know the book. I think Turin described Narciso as a massive cream-coloured pair of Mary Janes (those cross-bar school girl shoes). I’ve been vaguely wanting it for years cos it now makes me think of Alice in Wonderland :D I think the point was that it appears demure but is surprisingly bold!

I’ve only just remembered what I put on this morning. Encens Flamboyant by Goutal. This one is so beautiful and quiet.

I was supposed to have a computer course this morning but there were serieus network issues so it was cancelled. But I did get the chance to spend three quarters of an hour in a classroom with two fellow human beings. I need very little these days to have good time.

My evil bay purchases arrived. The Dyptique body balm is amaaazing — a really nice sweet orange scent? the glass packaging is really luxurious. I love this body care line.

The FM Eau de Magnolia travel spray is nice but much stronger in this format then my dabber sample. Less sweet too. I will have to wear it a few more times.

My Queen’s Gambit inspired vintage house dress buy is a total fail. Too tight and not flattering. I love buying vintage but doing so online is too tricky.

I have a candidate for the CP even though I have a good number of choices (e.g. all the Scents of Wood perfumes).

    SOTD = Slumberhouse Ore

So wonderfully good – woozy (new word for woody-boozy ?) amber.

In other news, I should link to a NYT article about how to maintain physical balance, especially relevant for people getting older. The key, as I understand it, is to be able to break a fall appropriately and strengthening core / leg muscles via squats and / or standing up from a sitting position helps train your muscles.

      That article is great!

      https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/14/well/live/elderly-balance-falls.html

Just be careful not to let your knees go ahead of your toes when you do the sitting-back-on-a-stool exercise.

And don’t try to go low, because you need to keep your back straight, and it’s hard to go low without leaning forward.

As long as the thigh muscles engage and it feels intense, you are gaining strength.

This is standing practice, THE foundational exercise for serious Tai Chi.

So, so, so important! I’m in my mid-40s and know I need to be doing more NOW to prepare me for later.

I live with an 85 yo fall risk. It’s terrifying to be just a few feet away and see her fall—and not be able to do anything about it. We’ve been lucky so far. (For those wondering: multiple walkers and canes in the house, but getting a stubborn senior to use them consistently is an ongoing Fun Time.)

Hello! Commenting on the same day as the post — better than I’ve been doing. lol!

Scent at bedtime and into this morning was Atelier Cologne Love Osmanthus. It’s not fair for me to judge on one try, but on this first try, it was not a love. The Different Company Osmanthus retains its place as my osmanthus love. I like Roger & Gallet’s take on it, too. However, I think AC’s Love Osmanthus is relatively new, so I guess I got that part of it.

Spritzed on Black Perfecto and went for a walk over by Rockefeller Center and then down to Bryant Park. Figured I should try get some walking in before the snow starts tomorrow. Pretty quiet out there.

Dental cleaning tomorrow morning first thing. They want me to arrive early to take a rapid-result COVID test before my appointment. There’s a co-pay, which I have to cover and find mildly irritating. But it’s probably a good idea to protect the staff and patients.

You will smell wonderful – Parfum Rare, or Coeur de Parfum as it is also known, is one of my favorites. The notes from Fragrantica say: “Top notes are Cardamom and Bergamot; middle notes are Geranium, Coriander, Carnation, Rose and Orris Root; base notes are oak moss, French labdanum, Patchouli, vetyver and Sandalwood.” What’s not to love? I have the edt and a parfum and both are wonderful and quite powerful.

SOTD as I mentioned in a comment above is Felanilla. I took a day off to have time to myself as once school closes that won’t be happening. (Also they capped how much vacation time we can roll over this year to force us to use it, so I was going to lose the day, anyway.) I got my first massage in a year; I have a great studio that is following every precaution to a T.

And I’ll cap the day off with a dinner out alone with my spouse for the first time since…before the pandemic? Our former babysitter pulled some shenanigans earlier this year where she charged a neighbour extra for “babysitting” our daughter as well when she was in our shared courtyard, even though my spouse and I were both in the house with wide open windows monitoring her, plus the babysitter was wearing her mask under her nose…so, no more. My kid’s a tween now and she just finished a Red Cross babysitting course, so she gets to stay home by herself. She’s psyched, as are we.

This is one CP I definitely can’t participate in. I’m so behind that my wishlist is all perfumes from five years ago or more, so everything I suspect I’m getting for Christmas even is old.

Well, in theory yes, now when that will happen I don’t know. I’m guessing it’ll be a few months. Although I still work in the hospital and see patients, I am no longer doing direct patient care so I am in the second tier. There has been a certain number of vaccines allocated to my state and they will immunize people in waves to allow for staffing issues due to side effects (staffing has already been stretched thin at the big hospitals here) so….tbd, I guess I just need to wait and see when it’s my turn. This was probably a longer answer than you were looking for.??

I’m on a Caron kick and wearing Nocturnes today. It went on bright and pretty but I can barely smell it a mere three hours later. Aldehyde and orange, too sweet. Yesterday’s Parfum Sacre was better. All the Carons seem to blend together. Saw my surgeon for a follow-up on my hand. He said it looks good and to come back in a week to get the stitches out.
